earth over the last few decades the
planet's surface has been
warming more than it should be due
to greenhouse gases
some gases in the atmosphere block
the heat we receive from the sun
preventing it from escaping they become
trapped like in a
greenhouse these gases can be
water vapor which is the most abundant and
has a feedback system
as we all know water vapor
increases when the atmosphere warms up
and this also brings more
rainfall another gas the most popular
perhaps carbon dioxide that
everyone talks about those who produce
carbon dioxide we through
breathing also produce it
volcanic eruptions but these are
almost nothing compared to the footprint
left by our activity and I'm not
talking here about when we go out for a run
and breathe harder but that of
deforestation changes in the land and the
burning of fossil fuels
humans have increased the concentration
of carbon dioxide by more than a third
since the beginning of the
Industrial Revolution another gas is methane which is
a hydrocarbon produced by
natural sources and human activity too
where is methane produced
in garbage dumps in Agriculture,
especially in rice cultivation, and
also a lot of methane is produced in the
digestive process of ruminants. Yes,
gases, belches, and manure, mainly
from cows. Is this really bad?
Yes, methane is 20 times more
powerful in trapping heat from the sun than
carbon dioxide. Although it is
present in less quantity in the atmosphere
per unit, it is the most destructive of the
greenhouse gases. Even more reason
to reduce beef consumption or
simply eliminate it. Another gas,
nitrous oxide, is produced by
farming practices in the soil.
Especially with the commercial use of
organic fertilizers,
nitric acids,
and the burning of crops. And finally,
we have chlorofluorocarbons,
chlorofluorocarbons,
synthetic compounds of entirely
industrial origin, which we've all heard about.
The production of these has been quite
regulated in recent years,
contributing to the reduction of the hole
in the ozone layer, which is good,
but it's just a problem. It's not in itself what
causes global warming. What
causes global warming are all
the gases that we've talked about so
far together. A moment, until now
we've been talking about
global warming. but this video is about
climate change aren't they the same thing
not exactly global warming
is the increase in the average temperature
of the Earth's surface due to the
increase in the levels of
greenhouse gases climate change is much
more complex it is a change in the climate
that occurs throughout the Earth or in a
specific region over the long term and
according to evidence has already occurred
several times previously throughout the
history of the Earth in the
last 650,000 years alone there have been seven
cycles of forward and backward cycles of the
freezing of the
continents the end of the last
ice age was almost 7,000 years ago
most of these changes that happened are
attributed to very small variations in
the Earth's orbit and the change in the
solar energy that our planet receives
but the change that we are
experiencing now is of
particular importance because it is being
produced by us
humans at an unprecedented rate this
graph of the NOA says it clearly for
thousands of years actually hundreds
of thousands of years as you can see here
below the level of carbon dioxide has
never crossed this line in the year
1950 it was here and this is where it is
now maybe this is the graph that we
should pay more attention to if
carbon dioxide emissions don't
stop we wouldn't be talking about the
next ice age but perhaps
something much worse the spread of most
species on a planet that
smells entirely of rotten eggs the
why of rotten eggs we will see
later that would be clear the
worst case scenario there is no need to
panic because it wouldn't happen in
this cycle maybe in the next if we
do nothing about it what we can't do
is sit
idly by and deny the evidence that
climate change is real but what is
that evidence evidence
sea level has risen 17 cm in the last
century although in the last decade this
amount has almost
doubled the latest reports indicate that
sea level is rising 3 mm every year
around the world flooding is becoming
more frequent and if this
continues in a few decades
several coastal cities will be
completely flooded and even the
population of some island countries like
Indonesia and the Philippines will be
left without any supply of
drinking water and their The entire population would
probably have to be evacuated during this
cycle. Another evidence is that the poles and
glaciers of the world are melting
this is happening without a doubt and you
yourselves will have noticed if there is a
very high peak in your area there are
photographs that show the
drastic change that has occurred in various parts
of the world in just a few decades
which has resulted in the
migration of several species of
animals some like polar bears
are already beginning to mate with
grizzly bears giving rise to hybrids that are now called
called
pisl. Another evidence is extreme events that
are a result of high temperatures
such as storms and hurricanes that
could become much larger and
much more
destructive. One more thing is the acidification of
the oceans since the beginning of the
Industrial Revolution the acidification
of the oceans has increased by about
30% this increase is the result of
our carbon dioxide emissions
going into the atmosphere and being absorbed
by the oceans the amount of
carbon dioxide that is absorbed by the
upper layer of the ocean is increasing at a
rate of 2 billion tons per
year this produces a drop in the
pH level and many animals especially
those low on the
food chain require a proper pH
to survive if that isn't the case those
species will be doomed to
mass extinction and now that we're
talking about mass extinctions let's
also talk about the oceanic conveyor belt
or thermal circulation which is
n't talked about much this is like a
circulation system that the oceans
have in the world and it's important because of
the large role it plays in the
flow of heat from
tropical to polar regions and its
influence on the Earth's climate as an
example this is one of the reasons why
England has such a
different climate than Canada despite being at the
same latitude but there's something else that
this conveyor belt does it delivers
oxygen from the Earth's surface
down to the ocean depths where
all these animals live that we
know almost nothing about long
ago in the past when
carbon dioxide levels exceeded the
limits this conveyor belt stopped
working too if it stops
working now very terrible things
could happen if that happens
scientists estimate that the entire climate of
the Earth would change in some way they are not
very unsure how much and how exactly
but what they are sure of is that it would be
catastrophic the oceans would
become a giant
stagnant puddle except for the creatures that
live on the surface most of
the ocean would become an
extremely cold place without oxygen
this would cause
anaerobic bacteria yes those that do not need
oxygen to live to proliferate down there
one of the peculiarities of these
bacteria is that they produce
hydrogen sulfide with a massive increase in these
hydrogen sulfide would fill the air
at the surface and if you have ever smelled
rotten eggs that is what
hydrogen sulfide smells like yes the entire earth would
smell like rotten eggs but
hydrogen sulfide not only stinks it
is also quite toxic and definitely
exterminate the animal species that
live on the
coasts talking about all this can
be quite depressing but it would not be
necessary to do it if there was not so much
skepticism about it and so much
misinformation the earth is
warming incredibly that is a
fact yes there was research that was
published a few decades ago that said
that the earth was cooling but they
were only a few many more
publications have been made since then
referring to global warming
today the vast majority of
scientists agree that the planet
is warming more than it should
Those who do not accept Loc invade the
media with false information to
incite controversy are usually
representatives of companies who a
drastic change in their
carbon dioxide emissions policy will
exterminate them well not them but their
companies companies that also
contribute large sums of
money to governments and
electoral campaigns there are enough interests in
between so that the
appropriate changes are not made in addition consumerism
has created needs that do not exist and
keeps these corporations afloat
because alternative energy sources are there they have been there
for decades some countries already use them
regularly but those who should
use them most China and the United States since they are the
ones who emit the greatest amount of
gases are not doing enough
yet the evidence tells us that
our planet is changing yes
it has always been doing But this
time everything seems to indicate that we
are causing it for millions of years
the earth has witnessed the
extinction of a large number of
species How long have humans been
here? Almost nothing. One way to
compare our time here is to
extend our arms.
The Earth was formed here and humans are
at the very other end. At the tip of the
middle finger, just the little nail that sticks out
of your middle finger. We've all been there for a
short time. That nail will continue to
grow with or without us.
How much longer do we want to be here?
