0:00 hello and welcome to another of our mmu
0:03 q-step video tutorials today we're going
0:06 to be looking at data sets
0:08 and asking what they are and why they're
0:10 important
0:12 data sets are just our way of storing
0:15 data
0:16 they make analyzing the data easier and
0:19 they make it possible to store our data
0:21 securely and efficiently you might have
0:25 seen a data set
0:26 or spreadsheet before before they look
0:28 like an indecipherable jumble of numbers
0:31 that only someone like data derek could
0:33 understand
0:34 but you'll soon see that there's nothing
0:36 to worry about
0:39 data sets are made up of rows and
0:41 columns
0:43 for a survey you'll find the variables
0:45 are the columns across the top
0:48 while each individual's responses to the
0:50 survey
0:51 are filled in across the row
0:56 imagine you've just carried out a survey
0:59 and you've got a huge stack of responses
1:01 how are you gonna store them well if you
1:04 had say a hundred surveys
1:06 you might be able to store them in a
1:08 filing cabinet
1:11 but please don't do this it's really
1:13 important to keep your data
1:14 secure and confidential at all times
1:18 so while you could technically store 100
1:21 surveys in a filing cabinet
1:23 once the number of surveys increases
1:25 that becomes much more difficult
1:27 suppose we have 50 000 survey responses
1:31 how might you store that many surveys
1:34 no although that is how a lot of
1:37 organizations have done in the past
1:39 because they're scared about using data
1:41 sets
1:42 a data set can help you store hundreds
1:45 of thousands of surveys
1:47 which is not only great for decluttering
1:49 your room but it also makes analyzing
1:51 your data
1:52 exponentially easier
1:55 without a data set even do an analysis
1:58 as simple as finding
1:59 what percentage of respondents answered
2:02 yes to a question
2:03 would require you to sift through
2:05 surveys counting them one by one
2:08 which would be both time consuming and
2:10 potentially inaccurate
2:13 whereas if your surveys are stored in a
2:15 data set
2:17 then you can use a statistical program
2:19 to do all your analysis for you
2:21 and with just one click you'll get that
2:23 percentage spot on
2:26 and it opens up possibilities of doing
2:28 all kinds of fancy analysis
2:30 which you'd never be able to do by hand
2:34 so thanks for watching another of our
2:36 mmu q-step video tutorials
2:39 hopefully you've seen what a data set is
2:41 and why it's important
2:43 and we'll see you next time
