0:06 it's the story of how God was seeking a
0:09 bride for his son each book is different
0:11 from every other book I'm trying to give
0:15 you the keys for you to unlock it for [Music]
0:28 [Music]
0:30 yourself I'd like to play a game with
0:32 you to begin this session I'm going to
0:34 read some quotes I won't tell you where
0:37 they're from but I want you to put your
0:40 hand up quickly if you agree with the
0:42 sentiments that are expressed all right
0:45 if you don't agree keep your hand down
0:47 here's the first Generations come and
0:49 generations go but the world stays just the
0:51 the
0:55 same anybody agree with that oh half a
0:57 dozen here's another a man is no better
0:59 off than an animal because life has no
1:01 meaning for
1:04 either you don't agree with that one it
1:06 is better to be satisfied with what you
1:09 have than to be always wanting something
1:12 else oh you all agree with that a
1:14 working man may or may not have enough
1:15 to eat but at least he can get a good
1:18 night's sleep a rich man though has so
1:20 much that he stays awake
1:25 worrying you think that's you agree with
1:28 that don't be too good or too wise why
1:31 kill yourself but don't be too Wicked or
1:33 too foolish either why die before you have
1:34 have
1:37 to does that make
1:41 sense no here's another one I found one
1:45 man in a thousand that I could respect
1:58 that fast Runners do not always win the
2:00 races and the brave do not always win the
2:05 battles you agree with that one right
2:08 one more put your investment in several
2:11 places many places even because you
2:13 never know what kind of bad luck you're
2:19 world you not sure about
2:22 that you should have agreed with
2:24 everyone that's all in the word of
2:27 God I've been reading from
2:30 Ecclesiastes all those came straight out
2:32 of the Bible and yet you didn't agree
2:34 with half of
2:37 them what I'm trying to show you is that
2:40 a text out of a context is
2:43 dangerous you can make the Bible prove
2:46 anything you like if you take texts out
2:49 of context and I'm sure you've heard
2:51 this that a text out of context becomes a
2:52 a
2:54 pretext well now when you read the book
2:55 of Ecclesiastes it really is the
2:58 strangest book in the Bible the problem
3:01 is not how to to understand it it's only
3:03 too easy to understand the problem is to
3:05 agree with it it says the most
3:09 outrageous things it's too easy to
3:10 understand it doesn't sound like the
3:12 word of God at all it sounds more like
3:13 those little slips of paper you get out
3:16 of Christmas crackers you know sort of
3:18 homely bits of wisdom in fact it doesn't
3:21 sound much different from for example
3:23 Alfred Lord
3:26 Tennyson whose uh centinary of death it
3:29 was last year I just picked things up at
3:32 random part of his uh poems is better to
3:33 have loved and lost than never to have
3:37 loved at all for men at most differ as
3:39 Heaven and Earth but women worst and
3:42 best as Heaven and
3:45 Hell Authority forgets a dying King
3:48 knowledge comes but wisdom lingers
3:50 because right is right to follow right
3:53 where wisdom in the scorn of
3:55 consequence what's the difference
3:56 between Alfred Lord Tenison and
3:58 Ecclesiastes there's not much difference
4:00 at all is there when you look at
4:03 both in fact the Book of Ecclesiastes
4:06 has a very contemporary ring it's full of
4:08 of
4:11 isms I'm always wary of isms anything
4:13 that ends in ISM a little red warning
4:16 light goes on in my brain there are only
4:19 two isms I'm happy with baptism and
4:22 evangelism but apart from those isms all
4:23 the other isms really give me the
4:25 willies they become obsessions with
4:27 people and here are some of the isms I
4:30 found in Ecclesiastes fatalism
4:33 whatever will be will be
4:34 be
4:37 existentialism live for the present
4:39 moment who knows what the future is it's there
4:40 there
4:43 chauvinism well I read one or two
4:45 statements out that are clear chauvinism
4:48 Hedonism Living For Pleasure eat drink
4:49 and be
4:54 merry cynicism there's a lot of cynicism
4:55 in the Book of Ecclesiastes and that
4:57 seems to me the mood of our age we live
5:00 in a very cynical age that cannot
5:02 believe good things of people that
5:04 always believes there's something wrong
5:07 or something bad in motives behind good
5:11 acts we're a very cynical people and the
5:13 general impression is one of pessimism a
5:16 gloomy view of life it really is quite
5:18 depressing in a sense to read
5:21 Ecclesiastes here is a man who has
5:23 reached the end of life and is
5:26 disappointed disillusioned and hopeless
5:28 I say reach the end of life because it's
5:30 very easy to
5:33 tell how old an author is by what he
5:36 writes we've just read the song of songs
5:38 and study it how old was Solomon when he wrote
5:40 wrote
5:44 that when he extolled the love with this
5:46 girl I mean he was quite young but when
5:48 you read The Book of Proverbs which he
5:51 also wrote he says now son watch the
5:55 women now how old is he now you see he's
5:57 middle-aged isn't he he's trying to stop
6:00 his son doing the same things he did I
6:01 remember once hearing a girl say to her
6:03 mother what did you do at my age that
6:06 makes you so worried about
6:10 me which is most devastating question so
6:12 when Solomon says you know watch the
6:14 women son that's a middle-aged man but
6:17 here in Ecclesiastes remember your
6:20 creator in the days of your youth before
6:22 the teeth are few and the eyes are dim
6:26 and the legs shake how old is he he's
6:29 very near the end of life he's reaching
6:31 his long home as he calls it and he's
6:33 looking back on life and he's
6:36 desperately disappointed disillusioned
6:39 and depressed with what he's done about
6:43 it or with it and these insights in this
6:45 book are the result of his
6:47 observations uh he keeps using the
6:50 phrase I saw I saw I
6:53 saw and he observed life he watched
6:55 people and he came to certain
6:58 conclusions which he includes here now
7:01 this does not mean that God sees life as
7:04 Solomon sees it that's very important
7:06 and that's why you don't just quote
7:08 texts from Ecclesiastes as if God is
7:11 saying it we've got to ask why God put
7:14 it in the Bible but nevertheless so here
7:17 we have Solomon and he gives himself a
7:19 title in Hebrew
7:22 calet what does it mean it's sometimes
7:25 translated preacher or philosopher or
7:28 lecturer I think the nearest translation
7:31 would be speaker
7:32 particularly because we use this word
7:34 for the one who presides over the
7:37 debates in the House of Commons and this
7:40 old man is presiding over a debate but
7:43 the debate is going on in his
7:45 mind and like every good speaker he
7:47 allows the pros and the cons to have
7:50 equal speech and he listens to a
7:52 negative thought in his mind then a
7:54 positive and the debate is about the
7:58 motion life is worth
8:01 living and he cannot decide whether his
8:04 life has been worth living or not and he
8:06 keeps listening to the pros and the cons
8:10 the Y and the Nay trying to decide
8:12 whether the motion is carried or
8:15 defeated now it's awful to reach the end
8:17 of life and to be to be debating that
8:19 question because you only get one bite
8:22 of the Cherry you only get one chance to
8:25 live yesterday has gone you can't have
8:28 it back again you only get one time
8:31 around and to get to the end of life and
8:33 feel that you've missed it that's
8:36 terrible it explains the midlife crisis
8:39 many men have they they often reach
8:41 their goals in their 40s and they get to
8:43 the top and look around and there's
8:46 nothing what's it all been for what's it
8:48 all been about and many men in Middle
8:50 years try and start all over again and
8:53 they trade in the family Saloon for
8:55 sports car and they trade in the wife
8:58 for a later model and they you know they
8:59 they go crazy because they they feel
9:02 I've missed it got to start again and
9:05 second and third marriages trying to
9:07 capture life trying to make the most of
9:10 it before it's gone it's a very very
9:14 common problem all right well Solomon is
9:17 debating what are we here for what's
9:20 life all about is life worth living how
9:23 can we make the most of life and that's
9:25 probably the most important question any
9:27 human being can
9:30 ask precisely because we only get it
9:32 once many I'm afraid don't even bother
9:36 to ask they just feed their bodies keep
9:39 their job going and they're just
9:43 existing what a tragedy to waste a life
9:45 just existing and just keeping Body and
9:48 Soul together many people just doing
9:50 that their sole concern is how to keep
9:53 going but why keep going if there's
9:55 nothing worth keeping going
9:58 for well now let's look at the negative
10:00 side of the debate first have I have I
10:04 wasted my life what's it all been and
10:08 his opening statement Vanity Vanity all is
10:09 is
10:12 Vanity now unfortunately that's a bad
10:14 translation because the word vanity
10:15 today means
10:19 Pride most cars have a vanity mirror on
10:23 one of the um Sun Shields you notice
10:25 which side it's usually on by the way
10:30 but um it simply means a pride mirror
10:32 and the word vanity today simply means
10:35 pride and nothing more but in older
10:39 English vanity means
10:42 emptiness it's to do a thing in
10:46 vain useless wasted and I think the
10:51 nearest English word to vanity is
10:53 pointless here's a man who gets the end
10:55 of life and says
11:00 pointless pointless it's all been
11:03 pointless now that is a very very sad
11:06 conclusion or useless useless utterly
11:08 useless as one modern translation puts
11:12 it now he had been in a position to have
11:14 anything he
11:17 wanted and to do anything he wanted
11:20 first he was King so he had the power to
11:24 do anything he wanted he also had the
11:28 wealth he was a very rich man if money
11:29 could buy it he could buy
11:34 and he did he had Fame too now these are
11:38 the things most men want wealth power or
11:42 fame to find some meaning in life to
11:43 make life worth
11:46 living well he was fabulously wealthy
11:49 and so famous that the Queen of Sheba
11:52 came on a pilgrimage just to meet him
11:55 and see what he was like and she said
11:57 the half has not been told now he said
11:59 I've tried everything and he gives a
12:02 list of his interests and they cover a
12:04 huge range of human activity the first
12:07 thing he tried was science and the
12:09 particular branch of science he studied
12:11 was Agriculture and he went in for
12:14 cattle breeding and he really studied it
12:16 and he bred some fine
12:20 cattle but it didn't satisfy him it was
12:22 interesting while it lasted didn't
12:25 satisfy so he then turned to the Arts
12:27 and he tried two branches of the Arts
12:30 music was the first and of course he
12:32 inherited a love of music from his dad
12:35 but he he really went into music studied
12:37 the instruments had orchestras playing
12:41 in the court and yet it began to pull so
12:43 he then moved into architecture that is
12:45 satisfying to build a great building and
12:47 to feel it'll be there long after you're
12:49 gone it's very satisfying as
12:51 architecture except you have to live
12:53 with your mistakes and then he tried
12:55 collecting pictures and he built
12:57 Galleries and he collected pictures from
13:01 all over paid a fortune for them but
13:02 they're all mine and he would walk along
13:04 the gallery looking at his
13:07 pictures but pretty soon that began to
13:10 bore him so he tried entertainment now
13:12 he didn't have TV couldn't so he got
13:15 caught Comedians and they came in and
13:18 they put on a sitcom for him regularly
13:19 in the palace and he laughed himself
13:23 silly to go to bed and laughter became
13:26 comedy have a good laugh that's that's
13:28 what life's all about have a good laugh
13:31 if you you heard that anyway and he
13:33 tried that and it was fun while it
13:35 lasted but it didn't last so then he
13:37 went into business and he am Master
13:38 fortune in the commercial world and he
13:40 really was good at buying and selling
13:42 and he really found he could make money
13:45 hand over fist more than he needed and
13:49 yet somehow that didn't satisfy so then
13:51 he tried pleasure and he tried the usual
13:56 forms of it food wine and women and he
14:00 certainly went into all three at debt
14:02 and still he was
14:05 empty so he then finally went into
14:07 philosophy and he bought a library full
14:10 of books and he he searched for wisdom
14:12 books all over got them from Egypt there
14:14 was a lot of wisdom literature in Egypt
14:16 and he got a lot from there and he
14:18 filled this library and he studied all
14:20 the wisdom and he studied all that great
14:23 men had written and finally instead of
14:26 making books there is no end you can't
14:27 read them
14:31 all and all these things failed
14:33 him they
14:36 stimulated but they didn't
14:38 satisfy now listen there's nothing wrong
14:40 with many of those
14:43 things but if they are the main purpose in
14:44 in
14:46 life they will
14:50 fail to interpret life for you don't we
14:52 need to hear this there's something very
14:54 modern about this he's saying look I
15:00 have tried it all and it's all pointless
15:02 now you see when you found real life you
15:04 can get joy out of all those
15:06 things but if you're trying to find the
15:08 meaning of life in any of
15:12 them one of the problems is you grow
15:14 old and you can't do them all as you used
15:15 used
15:18 to or else you just get tired of doing
15:22 them and we live in a frenetic age when
15:23 people are constantly trying something
15:26 new the biggest section of bookshops is
15:27 the cookery
15:30 section trying to find some new
15:32 gastronomic experience that might
15:34 titivate us you know we'll go to the Tha
15:36 restaurant tonight we'll have Chinese
15:37 tomorrow night and we'll do Indian the
15:40 next night you know as if Yorkshire
15:42 pudding isn't good enough for us as if
15:44 we must have some new experience to
15:48 stimulate us we might be satisfied if we
15:51 explore all the cafeterias of the world
15:54 it is really quite sad to see people
15:56 trying to find meaning to life in these
15:59 ways instead of having found meaning
16:01 into life able to enjoy them in their
16:05 place but when they become number one it
16:07 leads to what he calls vexation of
16:09 spirit we would say
16:12 frustration you just become frustrated
16:16 they are not meeting the need now can we
16:19 explain his failure to make sense of
16:22 Life yes we can he has tunnel
16:26 vision he has observed too much and seen
16:29 too little now tunnel vision is when you
16:33 can only see a part of what normal site
16:35 can see you only see a bit of the
16:38 picture and Solomon had tunnel vision
16:42 here in two ways he was limited first of
16:46 all everything he saw was under the
16:49 sun favorite phrase of his I saw Under
16:52 the Sun and if you never lift your eyes
16:55 above the sun if all you can see is
16:58 what's under the sun you will never
17:00 understand the meaning of life I think
17:02 the saddest people my wife and I have
17:06 met recently were out on the cost of Del
17:08 Soul people had had a lovely fortnite's
17:12 holiday in Spain and sold up here to
17:14 retire there and live under the
17:17 sun that's about all you can do out
17:19 there no wonder El Dorado was such a
17:22 flop because life is a flop out there
17:24 and we met these sad people who can't
17:26 afford can't sell their villain now and
17:28 they can't afford to come back they're
17:29 stuck under Under the Sun for the rest
17:32 of their existence now you see life
17:35 can't be lived under the sun you need a
17:37 much higher
17:39 perspective if all you see is Under the
17:42 Sun you don't see what life is all about
17:44 and the other limitation to his
17:47 observations was he only looked at this
17:49 life he never mentions the
17:53 next now if your vision is limited to
17:56 this earth and this life you will never
17:59 understand what life is all about or
18:01 what makes it wor living you need the
18:06 perspective of God outside these
18:09 limits both limits in space and time
18:11 give you too little a view of life it's
18:14 only when you see life under
18:16 heaven in the light of Heaven's
18:19 perspective and this world in the light
18:22 of the next that you begin to see what
18:25 life is all about you follow me and this
18:28 was his tunnel vision and this led him
18:31 to negative thinking now because we live
18:34 in a scientific age we've em bibed the
18:37 scientific way of observing things and
18:41 science only observes this world and
18:45 this life and the scientific age has the
18:48 same tunnel vision that Solomon has and
18:49 we're all brought up with it we all
18:53 suffer from it and we can't see beyond
18:55 you need in a sense to be outside of
18:57 life and look back at it to see it
19:00 properly and God is outside life and he
19:01 can see it
19:03 properly and it's very interesting that
19:07 uh whenever Solomon brought God into
19:13 Ecclesiastes he became positive and
19:16 Optimist whenever he was limited to
19:18 human observations and left God out of
19:20 his thinking and just observed human
19:23 beings Under the Sun and in this world
19:25 he got more and more
19:28 depressed but when God came into it he
19:31 begins to be positive and to see life in
19:34 a different perspective and there are
19:36 two chapters in Ecclesiastes where God
19:41 comes right into the picture and life is
19:43 focused the first is chapter
19:46 3 it's the best known and the most
19:49 frequently quoted section you all know
19:53 it a time to do this a time to do that
19:56 Melvin Bragg gave a title to his latest
19:59 novel which was serialized on TV a time
20:01 to dance he took it straight out of this
20:04 and it's amazing how many authors have
20:07 taken a phrase out of Ecclesiastes 3 is
20:10 a title for a novel or a film very
20:12 popular in fact it's the only bit of
20:14 Ecclesiastes that most people could
20:17 quote but it's a very important part
20:20 unfortunately people don't quote it all
20:22 you see it is a poem it's got rhythm
20:25 it's a real poetic song about
20:29 times but the important bit of it is
20:31 just after the Poetry ends when it goes
20:35 back to pros and it says that God orders our
20:36 our
20:39 times as the psalmist says our times are
20:40 in his
20:43 hand and when you believe that your life
20:46 is in God's hands and that he knows the
20:49 right time for you to dance and the
20:51 right time for you to
20:53 weep then the things that happen to you
20:57 are not chin they're God's choice for
20:59 you and he's we leaving a pattern out of
21:02 your life and life won't be one long
21:04 picnic and life won't be happiness all
21:06 the way because that's bad for you do
21:08 you realize that if our feelings were
21:09 always on the same level we wouldn't
21:11 have any
21:14 feelings do you ever think about that
21:15 it's only because we have lows that we have
21:17 have
21:19 highs if your feelings were always the
21:20 same you wouldn't have any feelings
21:22 thank God for
21:24 feelings there are times when we'll feel
21:26 like dancing and there'll be times when
21:30 we don't there's a time to kiss time to
21:33 stop see now then uh I've written A
21:36 Chorus about this we're going to sing
21:39 it um I put it to a well-known tune
21:42 you'll all be able to sing and uh it's
21:45 about times but it begins and ends where
21:49 Ecclesiastes 3 begins and ends with God
21:51 deciding the right time for us to go
21:55 through a particular experience isn't it
21:56 a lovely thought thing that if something
21:58 happens to you that because you're
22:00 life's in God's hands then it's the
22:02 right thing to happen at that time this
22:03 is not
22:06 fatalism fatalism believes in an
22:09 impersonal fate that nobody can affect
22:11 that's quite different from God's free
22:14 choice of what he will allow happen to
22:17 you and he will vary our lives so that
22:20 his purpose is fulfilled in them well
22:25 let's sing it together all right God is
22:29 Sovereign sets the season
22:31 date of
22:34 birthday day of
22:37 death time for
22:40 planting time for
22:42 reaping time for
22:45 killing time to
22:48 heal time for
22:50 Wrecking time for
22:53 building time for
22:56 sorrow time for
23:00 Joy time for m
23:01 time for
23:04 dancing time for
23:06 kissing time to
23:09 stop time for
23:12 finding time for
23:15 losing time for
23:17 saving time for
23:20 waste time for
23:23 tearing time for
23:25 mending time for
23:29 silence time to talk
23:30 time for
23:33 loving time for
23:36 hating time for
23:38 fighting Time For
23:44 Peace have your fun then but
23:47 remember God is
23:50 Sovereign he
23:53 decrees that is why the Bible says when
23:56 you make plans for the future always say God
23:57 God
24:00 willing my father always used to put in
24:02 a letter somewhere
24:05 DV in Brackets it stood for a Latin
24:08 phrase Deo Valente God
24:10 willing letter after letter I've seen
24:14 him just put DV I'll be with you next week
24:16 week
24:19 DV that's a person who knows that our
24:21 times are in God's
24:24 hands and actually all the plans you may
24:26 make may come to nothing because God has
24:28 other plans for you
24:31 and uh that's a positive note it's not
24:33 fatalism it's not saying whatever will
24:36 be will be because God can change his
24:39 plans there's no doubt that God changes
24:40 his mind he
24:45 repents the Bible says that he interacts
24:47 with our attitude to him if we change he
24:51 does if we repent he does and time and
24:53 again you find people like Moses
24:56 changing God's mind for him and pleading
24:59 with him God is not just a a mechanical
25:02 force gotting it all laid out he's a
25:04 person and he's interacting with us and
25:07 as we interact with him he can change the
25:08 the
25:10 times he can give you a time of dancing
25:12 when you expected a time of weeping and
25:14 he can do the opposite that's the first
25:17 chapter in which God comes and Things
25:19 become positive and what he's saying is
25:21 there can be a pattern to
25:25 life and God can set the pattern and God
25:27 can make sure his purposes for your life
25:29 are full fulfilled another favorite
25:32 saying of my father was uh life is long
25:34 enough to live out God's purpose but
25:40 moment well that's what he's saying in
25:45 Ecclesiastes 3 our times are in his hand
25:48 and he will decide not in an arbitrary
25:51 predestination kind of way but he will
25:55 decide what is best for us in the next
25:59 time next part of our life
26:00 isn't it good to have somebody looking
26:03 after us like that and to know that if
26:04 the next part of the road is tough and
26:08 unhappy well he has decided that's going
26:12 to be for our good and he has brought it
26:15 and he will see us through and our
26:17 character will be formed by that for our future
26:18 future
26:21 blessing see this is where the longer
26:22 view of happiness in the next world
26:25 really makes a lot of difference really
26:28 does see this world is so brief and so
26:31 fleeting uh I've Got a Theory as to why
26:35 when I was 20 one year was a 20th of my
26:39 memory when I was 40 one year was a 40th
26:42 of my memory when I was 60 one year was
26:46 a 60th of my memory next week I'm 63 so
26:49 one year is a 63rd of my memory and so
26:51 that's my theory life gets compressed in
26:53 your memory it seems to go quicker and
26:55 quicker and quicker doesn't it seems no
26:57 time at all since we were last here
26:58 videoing and I've had had two
27:00 conferences here since then one or two
27:02 of you men came to our Men's Conference
27:05 in January but life just rushes by but
27:07 we've got all
27:09 eternity to benefit from what we've
27:12 learned in this life all eternity to
27:14 enjoy the good things of God without all the
27:16 the
27:18 hassle we've got everything to live for
27:20 the other chapter which has a strong
27:23 sense of the presence of God in it is of
27:26 course chapter 12 and chapter 12 really
27:30 is worth reading to you because uh it's
27:34 written by this old
27:36 man and I do want to read it because
27:38 it's such a good description of old age
27:40 and since I'm now one foot in the grave
27:42 and the other on a banana skin it's good
27:46 to read chapters like this listen to it
27:48 young man he says I'm starting in
27:52 chapter 11:9 because oh these chapter
27:54 divisions are so messed up aren't they I
27:56 wish we could all have a Bible without
27:58 chapter and verse numbers in it would
28:00 really know the Bible then now I'm going
28:03 to begin with chap with chapter 11: 7
28:06 it's a wonderful thing to be
28:08 alive if a person lives to be very old
28:11 let him rejoice in every day of life but
28:14 let him also remember that eternity is
28:17 far longer and that everything down here
28:19 is futile by
28:21 comparison young men it's wonderful to
28:25 be young enjoy every minute of it all do
28:27 all you want to take in Everything But
28:29 realize realiz that you must account to
28:31 God for everything you
28:35 do so banish grief and pain but remember
28:37 that youth with a whole life before it
28:40 can make serious
28:42 mistakes don't let the excitement of
28:46 being young cause you to forget about your
28:46 your
28:50 creator honor him in your youth before
28:53 the evil years come when you'll no
28:56 longer enjoy living it will be too late
28:59 then to try to remember remember him
29:01 when the Sun and light and moon and
29:04 stars are dim to your old eyes and there
29:06 is no Silver Lining left among the
29:09 clouds for there will come a time when
29:11 your limbs will tremble with age and
29:14 your strong legs will become weak and
29:16 your teeth will be too few to do their
29:20 work and there will be blindness too
29:22 then let your lips be tightly closed
29:26 while eating when your teeth are gone
29:27 and you will wake at dawn with the first
29:30 no to the birds but you yourself will be
29:34 deaf and tuneless with quavering voice
29:37 you will be afraid of heights and
29:40 falling a whad withered old man dragging himself
29:42 himself
29:45 along without sexual desire standing at
29:48 death's door and nearing his Everlasting
29:50 home as the mourners go along the
29:54 streets yes remember your creator now
29:57 while you are young before the silver
29:59 cord of Life snap LS and the Golden Bowl
30:01 is broken and the piter is broken at the
30:03 fountain and the wheel is broken at the
30:07 syst and the dust returns to the earth
30:10 and the spirit returns to God who gave
30:14 it all is futile says the preacher all
30:17 is futile but then because the preacher
30:19 was wise he went on teaching the people
30:22 all he knew and he collected Proverbs
30:24 and classified them for the preacher was
30:26 not only a wise man but he was a good
30:29 teacher he not only taught what he knew
30:31 to the people but he taught them in an
30:34 interesting manner the wise men's words
30:37 are like gos that spare to action they
30:39 nail down important
30:42 truths students are wise who Master what
30:44 their teachers tell them but my son be
30:47 warned there is no end of opinions ready
30:50 to be expressed studying them can go on
30:54 forever and be very exhausting here is
30:55 my final
30:58 conclusion fear God
31:01 and obey his Commandments for this is
31:04 the entire duty of men for God will
31:07 judge us for everything we do including
31:11 every hidden thing good or
31:14 bad what a message for young
31:17 people now just notice what he says
31:21 number one he says remember remember God
31:25 remember him and what he's admitting is
31:28 I forgot him and of course that's why
31:30 Song of Songs doesn't mention
31:33 God when he was so young and so much in
31:36 love he forgot all about God he only
31:37 thought about this
31:40 girl he says to young people just
31:43 remember God while you're young before
31:44 it's too
31:47 late second he says fear
31:50 God not only don't forget him but fear
31:53 Him the wisdom literature of the Bible
31:55 constantly says it's the fear of the
31:58 Lord that is the beginning of wisdom
32:00 the Bible will not make you clever but
32:01 it will make you
32:03 wise now if you're clever you'll make
32:05 more money but if you're wise you'll
32:07 make more of Life Would You Rather Be
32:10 Clever or wise well one of the first
32:12 steps in wisdom is to be more afraid of
32:14 God than anything else amazing what
32:17 people are afraid of afraid of AIDS
32:19 they're afraid of redundancy they're
32:22 afraid of all sorts of things but I tell
32:23 you if you fear the lord you're not
32:26 afraid of anything or anyone else that's
32:29 a big fear and big fears cure little
32:31 fears why should we fear the lord
32:34 precisely because he's going to ask for
32:37 an account of what you did with the life
32:38 he gave
32:42 you and the fear of him saying you
32:44 messed it
32:47 up is a healthy
32:50 fear and it's important to fear God it's
32:59 right be amazed how many comments I've
33:01 had for writing that
33:04 book we live in a generation where even
33:06 people inside the church don't want to
33:09 hear a thing about that and yet God said
33:12 or Jesus said to Born Again Believers
33:15 don't fear those who can kill your body
33:18 rather fear Him who can throw Body and
33:20 Soul into
33:22 hell and if people outside the church
33:24 don't fear God that's because people
33:28 inside don't either fear is contagious
33:29 and when people inside don't fear the
33:32 lord people outside have no fear of him
33:34 at all they think he's a nice old guy
33:37 who wouldn't harm a fly they're utterly
33:42 wrong so remember God fear God and obey
33:45 God I was in a Millionaire's home in Dallas
33:47 Dallas
33:49 Texas and the father in the home had
33:52 bought his daughter a Toyota car to go
33:55 to school in she'd had it 18
33:58 months and this happened while I was
34:01 there she walked home and she told her
34:05 father that the car had broken down it
34:06 had just stopped in the middle of the
34:08 road so he sent a mechanic out to find
34:11 out what was wrong and the mechanic
34:12 telephoned and told him and I was
34:15 present when he asked his
34:17 daughter have you been putting oil in
34:21 the car and she said oil you never told
34:24 me I had to put oil in I've been putting Petrol
34:25 Petrol
34:29 in for 18 months she from that car now
34:32 there was a book in the glove box the Maker's
34:33 Maker's
34:35 instructions she'd never bother to read
34:38 it and so she' just run it into the
34:40 ground mind you he had pull and he
34:42 phoned up Toyota and they promised to
34:45 give them a new engine free he was
34:46 telling all his friends about this
34:49 wonderful Toyota offer so they got their
34:52 money's worth out of the advertising but
34:56 you see she was an idiot with that car
34:59 brand new car she just totally ignored
35:01 the Maker's instructions within 18
35:03 months it was
35:06 finished but people are equally foolish
35:08 to leave the Maker's instructions on the
35:10 shelf or in the
35:14 cupboard remember God fear Him and study
35:15 his way to
35:18 live I believe this is why the Book of
35:20 Ecclesiastes is in our Bible because it
35:23 tells you where you finish up if you
35:25 don't discover his way to
35:27 live that if you don't understand the
35:29 meaning of life from Heaven's angle and
35:31 from the angle of the next World you
35:34 finish up a disillusioned disappointed
35:36 depressed person saying well the whole
35:40 lot was pointless where has it got me
35:42 I'll be dead and gone and people will
35:44 have forgotten about me in no time and I
35:47 will leave no Trace whatever of the 50
35:50 60 70 years I've spent
35:52 here well Christians don't feel like
35:54 that they know that whatever we do in
35:57 the Lord our labor is not in vain
36:01 it has Eternal consequences for good or
36:03 evil and to know that you're doing
36:05 things that things could happen this
36:07 weekend in you that will last
36:10 forever because there are Turnal issues
36:12 at stake I believe that's why it's in
36:14 our Bible many years ago I was preaching
36:16 my way through
36:19 Ecclesiastes and uh I think we had more
36:21 conversions during that series than any
36:23 other series I've preached yet I
36:25 wouldn't have chosen Ecclesiastes as a
36:27 good gospel message you're nodding ah
36:28 head where you there and you will
36:30 remember something that happened there
36:31 were even Jews converted during that
36:35 series but halfway through my telephone
36:37 went Sunday afternoon a voice said we've
36:39 got Charles Coulson in England Chuck
36:42 Coulson the Watergate man you know from
36:46 the Nixon Affair and uh would like uh to
36:47 find a place for him to give us
36:49 testimony tonight could he come to your
36:52 church in Guilford so I said yeah fine
36:53 and then I had a real battle I thought
36:57 I've prepared Ecclesiastes 5 and I don't
36:59 why we should stop listening to God's
37:01 word because a star testimony has come
37:04 over the Atlantic so I thought I'm going
37:05 to preach it anyway and he can give his
37:07 testimony afterwards so I preached
37:09 through Ecclesiastes chapter 5 and then
37:12 said now we have Chuck Coulson here
37:14 Nixon's right-and man from water he got
37:16 up and he just said I don't need to give
37:19 my testimony you've already heard
37:22 it and we sort of looked at him he said
37:25 that chapter 5 of Ecclesiastes simply
37:28 describes my life and he he went through
37:31 it verse by verse and Illustrated it
37:33 from the way he'd wasted his life under
37:36 Nixon especially the verse be careful
37:44 recorded and that was that's the heart
37:47 of Ecclesiastes 5 because God knows what
37:50 you say as well as what you do and what
37:52 you think and what you feel never forget
37:55 that night well God teaches us
37:58 positively in the Bible how to live he T
38:01 teaches us also negatively how not to
38:04 and he gives us both examples and the
38:05 positive and the negative give a good
38:08 picture together Ecclesiastes is largely
38:10 negative it's saying don't you finish up
38:12 like this because if you leave God out
38:14 and forget him and don't fear Him and
38:16 don't live life according to the Maker's
38:18 instructions you will get to the end of
38:20 it and you'll feel it's all been
38:23 pointless well do you want to do that or
38:25 do you want to live God's way and then
38:27 you get to the end of it and say thank God
38:28 God
38:31 remember a prophecy once given to me and
38:33 it was a direct word from the Lord and
38:38 it ended David I or my son I want you so
38:43 to live and work that when you see me
38:46 you will say Lord we did
38:49 it Lord we did
38:52 it then you feel life's been
