the house judiciary committee that you
just heard barbara jordan speak before
approved three articles of impeachment
against nixon the first for hindering
the criminal investigation of watergate
that's obstruction of justice the second
for abusing the power of the presidency
by using the federal agencies of the
government to deprive citizens of their
rights and third for ignoring the senate
committee subpoena for the tapes as that
is illegal
before the house could vote though nixon
finally delivered the tapes one of which
contained the smoking gun
direct evidence that nixon had
participated in the cover-up on june 23
1972 and had been lying about it ever since
since
on august 8th 1974 he announced his
resignation before the house could vote
or the senate could hold a trial to
convict him because it was obvious that
both of those things were going to
happen if he stayed in office the house
would impeach and the senate would vote
to convict because republican voters
pretty well informed about what's going
on at this point would not stand by the
president he is the first and only
american president to resign from office
but make sure you have that order clear
in your notes he is not actually
impeached he resigns before he can be
so now we've got to figure out who's
going to be the president nixon's
original vice president spiro agnew had
resigned and pled no contest to charges
of bribery and income tax evasion in
1973 nixon's team's kind of crooked
gerald ford was the appointee vice
president so he became president when
nixon resigned
ford then controversially pardoned nixon
for quote any and all crimes committed
while president saving nixon from future prosecution
prosecution
nixon never apologized never accepted
responsibility nor did he face any
criminal charges for his criminal activity
activity
and historians have become very critical
of this pardon since the 1980s believing
it has led administration sent nixon's
to believe they were untouchable or
above the law
ford's administration presided over the
collapse of south vietnam which again we
discussed in our vietnam lecture but
daetan continued around the world the
u.s the soviet union and 30 other
european nations signed the helsinki
accords increasing trade between the
east and west and guaranteeing human
rights protections
by the mid-1970s the u.s entered
recession as wages decreased and the pay
gap between workers and management began
widening some of those u.s companies
moved production overseas in the wake of
these new trade treaties to exploit
low-wage foreign workers
other companies moved to anti-union
states in the south and west from
virginia to texas and over to california
factories began closing in the north and
midwest and commenters called it the
rust belt which we've talked about that
term before
the south attracted business but it
struggled to share those profits middle
class whites often moved to the south
from other locations and grew more
prosperous but native southerners white
and black found themselves mostly excluded
excluded
new right politicians constructed an
identity centered on small government
opposing civil rights workers rights and
regulations on business
and these business-friendly politicians
successfully fused conservative
protestantism and this free market in
the ideology into a potent political
force about freedom and god-given rights
they advocated allowing segregation and
discrimination as a matter of private
choice that the government really
shouldn't be involved in regulating
so there you have it what caused the
conservative backlash of the late 60s
and early 70s what was the southern
strategy be sure you can define that
we'll be talking about it in future
lectures of course
what events eroded trust in america's
public institutions its government and
what groups comprised the new right
