0:36 American ladder every week. Hello
0:39 everybody. Welcome to the show. It's a
0:40 joy to have you with us. Here's the
0:42 baran. How good. And you join us on one
0:45 of our favorite nights of the year. The
0:46 second week of S Doug Nichols round
0:48 tonight. We celebrate so much of the
0:50 great indigenous community's
0:51 contribution to this super game. It's a
0:53 joy to be here with you two. But what
0:55 about the roll call of people joining us
0:58 on the show tonight? The present and the
1:01 past. Cosie Picket, Bobby Hill, Winston
1:04 Abraham, Steven Michael, and Michael
1:07 Long are all joining us in the show
1:09 tonight.
1:11 Unbelievable. It's going to be amazing.
1:13 It's all about It's all about
1:15 celebrating uh the the great National
1:17 Indigenous Game and the contribution of
1:18 our First Nations people. And it's going
1:20 to be fun. We got a lot to look forward
1:21 to. It's going to be a terrific night.
1:23 Uh there's been a lot going on this
1:24 week. Obviously, before we bring the
1:25 guests out, we'll whip our way through a
1:27 bit of the news of the week. And of
1:28 course, Andrew Dylan, the AFL CEO,
1:30 caught up with a couple of the four of
1:32 the coaches for these impromptu sort of
1:34 uh state of the union dinners. They have
1:36 the Scott brothers, Simon Goodwin, and
1:38 Alistister Clarkson. Met with the AFL
1:40 CEO on Monday night just to to thrash
1:42 out bits and pieces. There Andrew Dylan
1:44 and the Scott brothers. Just three guys
1:46 walking into a pub and talking footy.
1:48 That's this show.
1:49 It actually is more serious. Apparently,
1:52 they could only order one entree in a
1:54 man under the soft cap and and and Chris
1:58 Scott has been given a please explain
2:01 for ordering the steak tarter.
2:03 Um but look, it's the biggest story in
2:05 football this week. Obviously, the state
2:07 of affairs at the top end. And if you
2:10 want to get the truth, you have to go to
2:12 our man on the spot, uh the front bar
2:14 Juno, who's down there out the front of
2:17 the hotel right now. the builders. Uh,
2:20 what do you got for us, Front Bar Jouro?
2:23 Thanks, guys. I'm here at the uh, hotel
2:25 at the pub where Andrew Dylan had dinner
2:27 with the coaches on Monday night. I've
2:30 got a massive scoop for the front bar.
2:31 This is huge news. This is a big
2:33 exclusive. I can confirm that Clark did
2:36 order the uh, chicken nuggets and chips
2:39 from the kids menu.
2:42 Wow, that's big. From the children's
2:44 bear and that to get him into the
2:45 booster chair as well.
2:48 But that's a bombshell. That is a
2:50 bombshell. It's a very very big story.
2:52 We are breaking the big story. We go
2:53 back to him. Can we make sure there's
2:55 some lighting there for the
2:57 pure never looks that well? No. No, he
2:59 does not. No. No. But he's doing his own
3:00 abituary later on. Is he Is he okay?
3:03 He's living rough.
3:07 Having a hard time tracking him down for
3:08 these crosses. It was a big weekend for
3:10 West Australian football. Of course,
3:12 Freeman will go over to NG Stadium. The
3:14 West Coast do they're working as hard as
3:16 every other team in the competition.
3:18 Great for Andrew McQuer to get his first
3:20 win of the year and fantastic for them
3:22 to get on the board. The Dockers got a
3:23 very, very big win against the Greater
3:26 Western Sydney Giants. So, it's rare
3:28 air. We don't get to say the two WA
3:30 teams win on the same weekend. Well,
3:31 very often. Rio now are five and five
3:34 and looking threatening. And boy, do
3:37 their fans know how to celebrate after a
3:39 big win.
3:41 Have a look.
3:45 That's inside a pub. He's on a
3:48 motorbike. Uh, give it a bit. Let's
3:52 tickle the engine. And off we
3:54 go. There it
3:57 is. I'm pretty sure that's how Andrew
3:59 Dylan left the
4:02 coaches the other night. But Freo are
4:05 renowned party for losing losing their
4:08 minds after after a big win. Have a
4:11 listen. This was something they got up
4:12 to recently.
4:15 Wow.
4:17 Yes. Calm down, everyone. You sure
4:20 that's not footage from this year's
4:21 Coachella, Mickey?
4:23 That's a That's a big xylophone. I've
4:26 It's not a xylophone. It's a glock and
4:27 spit. It's a xylophone. That's a very
4:29 very Excuse me. It's a glocken. It's an
4:31 oversized xylophone. It's a very big
4:33 neither. It's a mima.
4:36 A what?
4:38 What is a mima? What's a mima? that.
4:42 What do you It's neither. Just trust me.
4:44 It's a mim. Well, I'll tell you what, if
4:45 they win the flag, I have good authority
4:47 they're going to bust out the pan pipes.
4:49 So, hang around. Um, could be good. The
4:53 Dockers are on a roll. And they Well,
4:56 they're going okay. Yeah, they're not on
4:58 a roll, are they? They've won one in a
5:00 row.
5:02 And it was a good win. It was a hell of
5:04 a win. It was a great win. Hell of a
5:06 win. The clock spill out. Everything was
5:08 great. It's a Mirinda. It's a Mima. No
5:11 one more excited, by the way, than uh
5:12 Fox footies Kelly Underwood here.
5:15 Talking here about Patrick Boss,
5:16 although she may have gone a bit early.
5:20 Trying to get on his bike is boss. He
5:22 breaks the tackle. They overlooked him
5:24 in the draft and Patrick Boss says,
5:26 "Take that."
5:29 He's missed.
5:33 I think that's why they overlooked him
5:35 in the draft. Very that very miss. It
5:38 was a good buildup by Kell. Very good
5:40 call by it wasn't let her down. It was
5:43 Patrick Voss's fault. There's no doubt
5:44 about that. Uh despite the fact they had
5:47 a good win and they played themselves
5:49 back on a roll. They are the Luke
5:52 Jackson story won't go away of course.
5:54 Uh this is huge. He got some issues at
5:56 home at Pel on the home front apparently
5:58 over there in WA. He wants to get back
5:59 to Melbourne. He's where he wants to
6:01 come and play foot according to the
6:03 reports. The talk of the town out of WA
6:05 of course they are. So, uh, you know,
6:07 these trade rumors just will not go away
6:09 about Luke Jackson coming back to
6:10 Melbourne. Well, he was interviewed
6:11 during the week by Channel 9. They got
6:12 the scoop. And, um, look, as you listen
6:15 to him talking and answering these
6:17 questions, I don't think he could have
6:18 been any more categoric that he's not
6:20 going anywhere, right? Fully committed
6:23 to the Dockers. Yeah, of course. And um,
6:26 there's no, just to be crystal clear,
6:27 you haven't given any instruction or
6:29 indication that you want to be traded to
6:30 the Demons. No. No. Not at all. Awesome.
6:32 Happy in Perth, happy at Freo. Yeah,
6:34 love it. Absolutely. Emphatic, genuine,
6:37 sincere.
6:39 That's all I took from that, Mickey. I
6:41 don't know about you, but uh I would
6:42 like to point out what one thing I don't
6:44 know what else he was going to say
6:46 considering if you look at the person
6:48 sits walking next to him. That's his
6:50 coach, Justin Lund.
6:53 What else was he going to say, Mario?
6:54 It's a very good point in your eyes.
6:56 It's a sharp. That's like when you're
6:58 out to dinner with your in-laws in front
6:59 of your wife and they say, "How things
7:00 are going?" You know,
7:05 I think you're oversharing now, Sam. I'm
7:08 just You said that out loud. You said
7:10 that out loud.
7:14 Oh, hey. Um, I can see I'll be giving
7:17 you a spare key sometime. So, it's going
7:20 to be what's happening. Hey, a lot of
7:22 people have had heavy hearts in footy
7:23 this week, of course. A great friend of
7:25 the program, a great friend of everybody
7:27 here at Channel 7, of course, and the
7:29 front bar, Robert Walls. one of the
7:31 great players, one of the great coaches,
7:33 one of the great contributions to put he
7:35 passed away last Thursday. He was a
7:36 remarkable man, a great fellow, a great
7:38 friend, a great teacher, uh great man to
7:41 learn from and he had a wonderful
7:42 career. He passed away last Thursday
7:45 obviously and times like this. It's
7:47 worth remembering the deeds of great men
7:49 like Wals. He started as a 16-year-old
7:51 in a back pocket in a league where they
7:53 made you earn it back in those days. He
7:55 started in a back pocket. Yeah, he did
7:56 as a 16-year-old. skinny. He came became
7:59 one of the great half forwards. Had a
8:01 hard time to play football. No doubt
8:02 about that. He was shy away from the
8:05 tough jobs. He went to Fitroy and
8:06 Brisbane and Brisbane. He took them both
8:07 on and they were great relationships and
8:10 loyal friendships that got him to these
8:12 clubs. And in typical Walsie fashion, he
8:14 ended up at the Tig for a couple of
8:16 years. Threetime Premiership player,
8:18 premiership coach, Hall of Fame member.
8:19 I mean, it's just incredibly sad that it
8:22 ended the way it did for Wy. But in
8:24 typical Walsie fashion, he went out on
8:25 his own terms. So, we've been carrying
8:28 that with us this week. It was an
8:29 amazing career and uh it included, by
8:31 the way, being on the end of I think we
8:33 can all agree the worst umpiring
8:35 decision in the history of the game in
8:37 the 1972 grand final. Or he gets one
8:39 around the neck here.
8:42 Not only is there no free kick, the
8:44 umpire just says, "Umpire, play on. Play
8:47 on."
8:50 He It does feel like he's dropped the
8:52 knees. Yeah,
8:55 just by the way, the AFL has
8:57 retrospectively ticked that decision
8:59 off. No problems at all. All fine.
9:02 Wonderful stuff. He was a wonderful
9:03 player, of course. And he had a he had
9:05 an interesting relationship. He was
9:07 tough. He was tough on his players. He
9:09 was tough with the media. Uh you always
9:12 knew exactly what he was thinking. Here
9:13 he is leaving the tribunal and letting a
9:16 photographer know exactly what was on
9:18 his mind.
9:24 Tell me how many shots you need to take
9:25 here.
9:27 The film's three, but what about two and
9:29 piss off?
9:32 That's nothing, man. What about the Can
9:36 I tell you, apparently he said the same
9:38 thing to his wedding photographer, so he
9:40 just didn't care. We're all lucky enough
9:44 to have some sort of uh relationship. I
9:46 think you had coach Richmond. Did you
9:48 work with him? Oh, for 10 years at
9:50 Channel 10. Lucky enough to play a lot
9:51 of golf with him. He was a generous man
9:54 and a great fellow to work. Tough years
9:55 for him working with you. Anyway, um I
9:58 was you knew him. I was lucky enough to
10:00 spend some time with him and in in 2015
10:02 as part of a little series I was doing
10:04 for the cart website, I was over in
10:06 France where he was living for a year. Y
10:08 and I popped over there and look, put my
10:10 ridiculous outfit uh that I was wearing.
10:13 Put that to the side. put that to the
10:15 side and just enjoy his heartfelt
10:18 thoughts on these two gentlemen to my
10:20 right. Good opportunity to say hello to
10:22 the boys in the Friday front bar. Of
10:24 course, I do this with Andy Mahar and
10:25 Mick Mallaloy. Andy Mah, you've done
10:27 with him. Oh, I've worked with Andy for
10:29 many years. Great fell. Staunch Carlton,
10:31 man. I love him. And Mick Mallaloy,
10:33 [ __ ]
10:41 Oh, I love that clip, by the way. Yeah.
10:44 How do you What were you doing in the
10:46 What were you doing since dressed as a
10:48 French mime? Why did you You didn't feel
10:51 the shadow in the background. Gave it
10:52 away that you were in France. I didn't I
10:55 didn't want to. I just had normal
10:56 clothes on and Ballsy said, "I want you
10:58 to wear this." And I go, "All right,
10:59 mate. Whatever you want." You know what
11:00 I mean? So, I was at his home and nice
11:02 rosé. And do you do any mine?
11:06 Yeah, I do.
11:08 And um you'll be seeing it during the
11:11 break. It's okay. All right.
11:13 to to all of Rob's family and friends.
11:15 Uh we're thinking of you on this uh on
11:17 this on this week and it's a heavy week
11:20 for a lot of people obviously uh Robert
11:22 what a contribution he made and with
11:24 hearts already heavy with the passing of
11:26 Rob. They were positively broken on
11:29 Saturday. This is just unthinkable uh
11:32 news what happened to Adam Cwood when he
11:35 passed away on Saturday afternoon. It's
11:37 unthinkable what his family's going
11:39 through. Um, and it's just a horrible,
11:42 horrible time for that entire family.
11:44 We're going to go to a break and as we
11:46 do, uh, to the Cellwoods out there,
11:48 friends and family, our thoughts are
11:50 with you.
12:14 Welcome back to the show. Look at the
12:16 front bath behind. How good the old
12:17 village bell hotel. The village bell.
12:20 Yeah, the village belt would be great
12:21 for an AFL coaches dinner. No doubt
12:24 about that. Don't you think that would
12:25 have been fantastic? Cuz as we know it's
12:27 a big story and there was one at the
12:29 Builders. Let's go back to the front bar
12:31 journalist who's out the front of the
12:32 builders with all the latest. What's
12:35 going on down there? the front baro.
12:37 Uh, yes, boys, you wouldn't believe
12:38 this. I've managed to secure an
12:40 exclusive interview with one of the
12:42 bouncers who was working here on Monday
12:44 night at the coach's dinner. His name's
12:46 Rob. Rob, what were you thinking when
12:48 you saw the Scott brothers rock up? I
12:50 shot myself.
12:52 There you have it. A front bar
12:53 exclusive. Back to your doors in the
12:55 studio. That's pretty. Unbelievable.
12:58 Unbelievable.
13:01 Looks like it'll take a fair bit. You
13:02 heard it here first. Look, it take a bit
13:04 to rattle Rob too, I reckon. Can we Can
13:06 we cross back now or you want to do it
13:09 again? No.
13:10 What do you got? You're crossing back.
13:12 No, no, we can't cross. Hey, uh, S Doug
13:14 Nichols round rolls on this week, of
13:16 course, the second weekend. Uh, we can't
13:17 wait. We've got two of the genuine
13:20 superstars of the modern game joining
13:21 us. We can't wait to see what they've
13:23 got to produce this weekend. Please make
13:25 them welcome Coy Pigot and Bobby Hill.
13:28 Everybody,
13:35 thanks for coming on, fellas.
13:37 Just magnificent to have you with us.
13:40 Special round. Do you feel like you feel
13:42 it? You feel the kind of special nature
13:44 of what we're celebrating this weekend.
13:46 Yeah, 100%. I mean um obviously growing
13:49 up watching obviously the dream time at
13:50 the G and um you know you always want to
13:52 be a part of it and yeah to run out each
13:56 week and um yeah especially big
13:58 occasions like obviously as sug and um
14:01 yeah it's a game I always tick off the
14:03 calendar to always yeah can't wait to
14:04 play it. What about you cos? Yeah
14:06 exciting as um you know we get to I
14:08 guess showcase our skills um represent
14:10 our family um you know our cultures
14:13 that's just what we love to do. Showcase
14:14 the skills. Can we can we do a bit of
14:17 that right now? Let's go. We'll go with
14:19 you first, Paul. It's extraordinary. So,
14:21 these are your highlights and and it's
14:22 just it's strap yourself in stuff when
14:24 we watch you two play your footy. This
14:26 is where you started at GWS. One
14:29 question as we watch these ridiculous
14:31 highlights of yours, Bobby. For those of
14:32 us who can only dream of playing footy
14:35 like this, how much fun is it to when
14:38 you get out on the MCG, these massive
14:40 stages to be able to do this stuff? I
14:43 know it's serious, but how much fun is
14:45 it? Uh, yeah. No, it's really fun
14:47 obviously having a big crowd like
14:49 playing in front of Collingwood each
14:50 week and um yeah, I mean to do do this
14:54 and um yeah, I think it's all obviously
14:56 instinctive. Look at that. Yeah, I don't
14:59 mind watching Cosy's highlights
15:01 before gets me up and about. Can you
15:04 ever get up that high, Cos? I mean, you
15:06 can jump, but can you get up as high as
15:07 Bobby Cat? Probably jump over. I reckon
15:10 you got me covered. Hey. Um, I don't
15:13 mark as much. So, yeah. Now, you do most
15:16 of your work on the ground. Yeah, that's
15:17 it. Is there anywhere that you don't
15:19 reckon you can kick a golf from? As we
15:22 have a look at your stuff, CO, it's
15:23 extraordinary. Do either of you think
15:25 there's anywhere you can't actually get
15:26 the ball through the goals from
15:29 the other side of the field? Man,
15:33 that far all I watch these clips and I
15:36 imagine trying to play on these. Imagine
15:38 that would be the toughest assignment in
15:40 football. I got a I got a question for
15:42 both of you. When you have the ball, is
15:43 there do you ever think about centering
15:45 it?
15:47 Look at this. No,
15:50 inside 50. No, not inside 50. It's
15:52 always going to be a goal. 100%. Well,
15:54 try to. There's a there's a screamer.
15:58 Bobby, what's it, you know, you've
15:59 started at GWS and you moved to
16:01 Conniewood. I was going to say what's it
16:02 like playing in front of the big crowds,
16:03 but what's it like playing in front of a
16:04 crowd?
16:08 It's um obviously a lot different.
16:12 No, obviously. Yeah, obviously grateful
16:14 for obviously them drafting me and
16:16 making my childhood dream come true. But
16:18 um nothing better than playing in front
16:19 of them. What about that one? Look at
16:20 that. So medaly is that actually is it?
16:24 Yeah. Which draw?
16:27 Um no. Do you ever get it highlights
16:31 like that? Do you ever take them out?
16:33 Like do you ever take the medals out and
16:34 just have a look at them or do you It's
16:36 all about next week in the business? Um
16:40 no, just next week in the business. Um
16:42 it's frame. So is it? Yeah. What about
16:44 you? Mine's in a safe at the moment. Is
16:46 it really? I'm a nation.
16:50 Hey, I'll let you know after the after
16:52 cuz you may have noticed there's one
16:53 particular highlight we left out of your
16:54 package and it's one that I wanted to
16:56 make particular mention too because it
16:58 gives me so much joy. It's been one of
17:00 the great moments of my football
17:02 watching career to see what you did to
17:04 Carlton in round 22 of round of 22 uh to
17:10 kick the winning goal to put Carlton out
17:12 of a final series. Let's take a look.
17:14 And this is I'm tearing
17:18 up. Look at this. Now, these are great
17:21 scenes, but these are even
17:24 better. And right here, I'm going to
17:27 tell you, that's why I go to the footy.
17:28 Look at that. This is the greatest thing
17:31 I've ever seen. Check it out. That's
17:33 what it's all about. Cozy. Come here.
17:35 Come here, mate. Come
17:37 here.
17:42 Yes.
17:44 Yes. Oh, fantastic. Did you know when
17:47 you did when you kicked Did you know
17:48 what was on the line for Carlton that
17:50 night? Um when you kicked that goal, did
17:52 you know that for that for the for that
17:54 moment they were out of the finals?
17:55 Yeah, I did actually. You did? Right.
17:57 Yeah. Good on you. Yeah.
18:00 Yeah. Nice. Are your mates are your
18:02 mates off the field? Um Colton. No, no,
18:05 no. You Oh, me and Yeah. Yeah. No,
18:08 obviously if I I would never walk past
18:09 him. Um he's someone I like to watch and
18:13 um I take bit of his game and try to put
18:15 it in mine and um No, he's obviously a
18:17 freakish talent and um yeah, I was
18:20 obviously grateful and very lucky enough
18:21 to play on the same team as him,
18:23 obviously the Allstars. We'll get to
18:25 that. Yeah. No, he's Yeah. Again, he's
18:28 same same thing goes. Um and we're both
18:30 from the wheat belt of WA. So, Northern
18:32 Quing is only what 30 minutes apart. So,
18:35 yeah, it's a big thrill for us to have
18:37 you on the show and at the bar over
18:39 there together because uh I'm glad
18:40 you're getting along because um the last
18:42 time I saw you two on the field, it it
18:44 it didn't it wasn't as friendly,
18:47 especially for you, Cozy. This
18:51 is Bobby. Now, Bobby, you said make sure
18:55 you play this highlight for him.
18:59 I want I wanted to bump him, but I've
19:02 been suspended too many.
19:06 I don't When I stepped, I just obviously
19:08 he didn't even move and I was like, "Oh,
19:09 no. I'm in trouble." Yeah. Hope for the
19:11 best and um yeah, very lucky. That's
19:14 pretty impressive though. Like he's he
19:16 you've got him for a few things, but
19:17 he's probably got you for strength and
19:19 power to be able to get him off like
19:21 that. That's pretty impressive. probably
19:22 old man strength coming in.
19:25 You mentioned does that if you go for
19:26 his beer by the way.
19:29 You mentioned the um indigenous allstar
19:31 games from earlier this game. So fun to
19:35 watch. Why was it the way every single
19:38 member of this team embraced this and
19:40 the joy that you seem to have playing
19:41 alongside one another. Tell us why it
19:44 meant so much to every That's a
19:45 beautiful move by you, by the way. But
19:48 tell us why it meant so much to
19:49 everybody who played in this in this
19:51 team. Well, yeah, it was obviously 10
19:53 years since the last one and um
19:56 obviously me and Cy would have been in
19:57 the stands watching um obviously, you
19:59 know, want to be a part of it and um
20:01 yeah, for our name to be first out and
20:03 um you know, in the team and um yeah, to
20:06 showcase our skills, especially back in
20:07 WA and with all the boys um yeah, it's
20:10 something I will cherish for obviously
20:11 rest of my my life and um yeah,
20:13 hopefully can't wait for the next one.
20:15 You cops. Um, I think just like the
20:17 whole week it's exciting like just to be
20:19 in great company like all the boys just
20:22 all week we're just you know in cramps
20:25 just laughing at each other like all
20:27 week I couldn't, you know, remember the
20:29 last time I laugh so much. So I think
20:32 the week just set us up pretty good.
20:33 That's awesome. Fantastic. Definitely
20:35 not watching this show then. Um the
20:38 uh boys it does it it sounds like
20:40 everyone involved in the indigenous host
20:42 had a ball especially you two and um if
20:45 you if you have had a look at the you
20:46 know from afar everyone did seem to be
20:48 having a wonderful time just a big party
20:50 although I would point out there was one
20:52 kid that wasn't having a great
20:53 time. Um
20:58 what's going on there Bobby? Who's that?
21:00 Yes. So that's Bobby Jr.
21:04 He doesn't like to listen as you know. I
21:06 tried telling him to come back and the
21:07 fireworks went off and then obviously
21:10 scared him a bit and um cracked it at me
21:12 for no reason. I tried grabbing him and
21:15 he wouldn't come to me. So then
21:16 obviously Jumpy grabbed him and most of
21:18 the boys do. But no, yeah, it's
21:20 something I'll be showing off when he's
21:22 21st.
21:24 Of course you will. Bobby Jr. named
21:27 after you of course Bob. Bobby is except
21:30 you changed your name to Bobby, didn't
21:31 you? What was that? Um, well, my real
21:33 name is Ian. I don't like to be called
21:35 that cuz I'm only I'm only 25. I like
21:38 or something. That's an old man name,
21:40 not but yeah, obviously my dad's name is
21:42 Ian, so named after him. And um I got
21:45 the nickname um Bobby through my
21:48 grandfather who obviously passed away
21:51 now, but um he used to live with us and
21:53 um I was obsessed with Bob the Builder.
21:54 So Bob, Bob the Builder. Bobber. Lucky
21:57 you weren't obsessed with Peppa Pig.
22:01 I look like one in the offseason. So,
22:05 fantastic.
22:08 Um, Cozy, I've got to ask ask you. You
22:13 you you play with so much confidence.
22:14 You play with so much flare. Uh, to the
22:17 point where you've been known to even
22:18 taunt an opposition when you opposition
22:20 player when you're so far out in front.
22:22 And this is a great look there. There it
22:24 is. What are you doing? It's uh, don't
22:26 argue while you're running away.
22:31 Do you enjoy that? Is that is it is it
22:33 part of what drives you to have fun? Um,
22:36 yeah. It's all about having fun at the
22:38 end of the day. Absolutely it is. And I
22:40 think that that day you seen that I had
22:41 fun. So I love you having fun and I love
22:44 it. I I'd like you to go further. I'd
22:45 like you to take a leaf out of Leon
22:47 Davis's book. When it comes to taunting
22:49 is the absolute master. And hello
22:53 and I'll just show you again.
22:56 Here's another one. How good is is that
22:59 the is that the high water mark for
23:00 taunting the opposition? Yeah, that
23:03 reminds me of Shay Bolton when he did
23:04 that. Sh Bolton as well. Well, goody. So
23:07 do you. If you did that, you did that
23:08 this weekend. You just get the footy out
23:09 and you waggle it around in someone's
23:11 face as you're running away from them.
23:12 Um if we're
23:15 winning it. Yeah. Don't do it when
23:18 you're six goals down. You mentioned uh
23:21 Leon on this show last year. Leon was on
23:23 the show with his dad. They designed the
23:25 Collingwood jumper for Doug Nichols
23:26 round last year and you've done it this
23:29 year at Melbourne with your old man
23:30 Kevin, haven't you? You two have
23:31 designed the footy jumper
23:34 together. How special was it to be able
23:36 to do that with your old man? Yeah, it's
23:38 pretty crazy um to have him, you know,
23:41 um come and I guess, you know, express
23:45 my culture and um just be a part of the
23:48 footy club really. Um, I look up to him
23:51 a lot and I think, yeah, it's just crazy
23:54 to that he designed the
23:57 Gund for the team that I'm playing for.
23:59 Um, it means a lot um to myself, my
24:02 family, and yeah, I'll probably cherish
24:05 this forever. So, that's great, man.
24:06 He's a talented man. He was He's stand
24:08 He's a comedian. Yeah, he is. Yeah, I
24:10 saw him do 10 minutes today. It was he
24:12 was magnificent. And I'm used to working
24:14 with you, so I wasn't used to I wasn't
24:17 used to I wasn't used to jokes. I just
24:19 Apparently he was he was the only
24:21 entertainment of that lunch you were
24:22 hosting.
24:24 He was the only one who got any laughs
24:26 on the day. Tell us about the calling
24:28 jump. You got the calling jumper there?
24:30 Yep. Tell us about it. Yeah. So the
24:32 artist is Lisa Thor. She's um born and
24:35 bred like around in Collingwood Fitzroy.
24:38 Um so yeah this uh obviously the design
24:41 and the artwork around it's more like a
24:44 uh she says it's a magpie's bird's eye
24:46 view of um the Collingwood street. So
24:49 it's like the every lane way she's
24:52 obviously grew up walked and yep um yeah
24:55 obviously it's unbelievable to see this
24:58 and on a jersey and especially to
25:00 obviously every other jersey as well.
25:02 But um yeah, it's something I will
25:04 cherish for the rest of our obviously
25:06 our careers and um yeah, so yeah, full
25:08 credit to you wear them well, lads. It's
25:11 a joy to watch you play footie every
25:13 week and you two are carrying on the
25:15 legacy of so many First Nations players
25:17 who have come before you and we love
25:19 going to football to watch you and your
25:22 mates play footie the way you do. Good
25:24 luck on the weekend. Enjoy everything
25:25 that Doug Nichols Ram brings and thanks
25:27 for coming on the show. his metal.
25:31 Bobby Hill and Cozy Pink are joining us
25:34 on the show. Don't go anywhere. From a
25:36 couple of the current day superstars to
25:38 one who lit it up on the other side of
25:40 the road, Winston Abraham to join us
25:50 next. Welcome back to the show. Joy to
25:53 have you with us on a really special
25:54 night for all of us here on the front
25:56 bar. our next guest. He was feeding one
25:58 of the most exhilarating players
26:00 unbelievable in the '90s. Few in that
26:02 decade could light it up like he could,
26:03 whether it be on the ground or in the
26:05 air. What a player he was. Please make
26:07 me welcome Winston Abraham. Everybody,
26:13 thanks for coming on, mate. Thank you.
26:17 It's a joy to have you with us. It's a
26:18 joy. It's a big thrill for us. We're big
26:20 fans. Do you uh do you watch this show?
26:22 No.
26:25 Did you change your name to Winston from
26:27 Ian?
26:29 No. Ian's my real name.
26:32 I ain't no Winston. Hey, it's great to
26:34 have you on here. We got some great
26:35 highlights to show a lot of people who
26:37 would never have seen you play. It's
26:38 unbelievable. When what we what we
26:40 generally do is put everybody when a
26:42 player comes on, we put their highlights
26:43 just in one package because, you know,
26:45 it gets us through the highlights before
26:47 we get into all the other stuff. at your
26:48 highlights, whether they be marks or
26:50 goals. In a 110 game career, we're too
26:53 good. So, we've separated the marks and
26:56 the goals, if you don't mind. So, for a
26:57 man who stood 5'9, 175 cm in the old, is
27:01 that about right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
27:02 That's about right. You'd agree with
27:04 anything we said, right? I think No.
27:06 178. 178. Okay. So, 178. So, an inch
27:09 taller than that. Something like that.
27:11 We're going to give you 179.
27:14 Take the 17. Are you
27:17 6' roll roll the package and have a look
27:19 at these first? We're going to have a
27:20 look at the marks to begin with. We're
27:22 looking at a 6'7 man.
27:25 I mean, you are jumping bloke against BS
27:27 who are often a foot plus uh higher
27:30 taller than you. Is this something you
27:32 always had as a kid? Did you always have
27:34 the ability to jump and take these
27:36 ridiculous marks? Funny funny thing is
27:38 we we uh I had I had a couple of cousins
27:40 that Oh, yeah. I had a couple of cousins
27:42 that just used to kick the ball up and
27:44 let us take screamers on them, right?
27:45 And and I was, you know, 10, 11 years
27:47 old doing that. So
27:51 So you always had the ability to ask,
27:52 did Dennis, what did what was Dennis
27:54 Dennis, was Dennis Pagan a um did he
27:56 encourage you to fly for Mark Winston?
27:58 No, but
28:00 he po used to um just say to me before a
28:03 game, he say, "Look, mate, I'm not going
28:04 to tell you how to play. You just go and
28:05 play." And uh yeah, I didn't have that
28:08 at free metal, but when I No, no. Yeah.
28:10 Yeah. We're not going to North. What
28:11 about your teammates at North? Did they
28:12 mind getting your knee back of their
28:14 heads from time to time? The duck the
28:15 duck said to me one once, he goes, he
28:18 goes, "Winnie, I don't mind if you jump
28:20 on my shoulders." He said, "Go for it."
28:22 He said, and I said, I looked at him and
28:24 he goes, he said, "Cuz I'm going to do
28:26 it to
28:27 you." So, every time I got a chance, I
28:29 just went for it. So, they were the
28:32 marks. Let's have a look at the goals.
28:33 And the one there's the first one here
28:35 that just the power when you're right,
28:38 the ball is behind you. Look at that
28:40 kick has gone post tightened about 10
28:43 rows back. Did you always have that
28:45 ability? I mean, did you always have a
28:47 sweet right foot?
28:50 Yeah. I I think um that was another
28:52 thing we practiced just kicking
28:55 kicking goals. Yeah. Where was your best
28:58 position, mate?
29:00 Somewhere on the field.
29:03 Half forward. Half? No. Yeah. Half
29:05 forward. It's a hard position to play.
29:07 You you are the Look at this. We want to
29:10 know this over here. How do you There's
29:12 an obvious question here. Py. Yeah. Did
29:14 you go back and pick up your hamstrings
29:15 after that guy?
29:18 I don't know how you didn't do them.
29:21 Extraordinary. How much did you love
29:23 playing coming from where you came from?
29:24 How much did you love playing your footy
29:26 at the MCG? Oh, look, it was Yeah, it
29:28 was it was awesome playing there. Um
29:31 you just used to go out in the middle of
29:32 the ground and have a look around and
29:34 then Yeah. I don't know. You you're sort
29:37 of like in a bubble when you're out
29:38 there. Yeah. Yeah. And you just We spoke
29:41 to the young fellas before you came on
29:43 and we asked I think I asked Bobby the
29:45 question. Was there anywhere on the
29:47 ground where you didn't back yourself to
29:49 kick a goal from?
29:52 Um
29:54 no some of the positions you the the
29:57 ball I think you don't actually you
29:59 don't actually go and kick the ball and
30:02 think that you're going to kick the
30:02 goal. It just happens. Yeah. It doesn't.
30:06 You know, you're not you're not you're
30:08 not going there again. It's like me with
30:10 jokes, mate.
30:13 I really, you know, they just When's it
30:15 going to happen? When's it going to
30:17 happen? Just tell us. Are we close? Are
30:19 we there? I feel I feel it. Can I Can I
30:23 take you back to the very start? You
30:25 were part of the inaugural team down
30:26 there at Freo and I loved when you came
30:29 into the competition. It was great to
30:31 see you made an impact straight away on
30:32 and off the field. Uh, have a look at
30:35 this pre I'm not sure if this is
30:37 pre-match entertainment or part of some
30:39 kind of
30:40 martyr. Were you aware of all this going
30:43 on at No. No. The the time that I think
30:46 that was the first game that was played.
30:49 I think it was Sie. Yeah. I think that
30:51 was the first game and I Yeah. Scotty
30:53 Chisum was woke up on that. Was that
30:55 Scotty Chis? Is that him? Was that him?
30:57 Was one of the village people for for
31:00 for a minute. But did you ever want to
31:02 stick your nose out when you're in the
31:03 war? You hear I know that was a song.
31:05 No. No. No. Did Did you I mean, you love
31:07 the footy club, but the song's not
31:09 great. Did you I mean, did what? Give us
31:12 your thoughts on the Freo song. Well,
31:13 I'll tell you a story. When we first got
31:16 together, we we had a meeting and and uh
31:19 and Jared got us all together and and we
31:21 had this meeting and they got this
31:22 fellow out singing and sing sing the do
31:25 the docker song, the new song, unveiled
31:27 the new song. And after we heard it, I
31:29 looked at Ben Allen and Ben Ben Allen
31:32 goes, "Are you kidding me?"
31:36 No one liked it. Shocking. It was so
31:38 good. Yeah. So, you start at free, you
31:40 end up at North and you're playing a
31:42 premiership winning side to How did it
31:43 come about that you went from Freeman to
31:45 Kangas? We have a look at you kick a
31:47 couple just before you do, do you want
31:48 to apologize to Mick Ston here? I mean,
31:51 nowhere to be seen. You break his ankles
31:53 and you're coasting, mate. Like, you're
31:54 doing that so easy.
31:56 Do you want to apologize to me in
31:57 session? No. He's he's a cold man. He
32:01 is. How good was it to be? I mean, is it
32:03 obvious that this is just the greatest
32:04 day you ever had playing footy? Yeah.
32:07 Yeah. Yeah. Know, it's it is um it was
32:10 it was a I mean, I don't know how teams
32:12 like Hawthorne and Brisbane and
32:13 Collingwood and all these teams. Well,
32:15 coming back the next year was like, man,
32:16 a strange feeling that you're playing in
32:18 a grand final year after. Yeah. You
32:20 know, you're doing it again. Yeah. But
32:22 it was a massive relief to win. When did
32:25 you I mean carton weren't much chop that
32:26 day. When did you when did you know you
32:28 had that game one? Oh when they beat it
32:31 in the pre the week.
32:34 The week before.
32:37 Quite seriously. Did you think No, Boron
32:39 and Boron Picket and I were watching the
32:40 game and as soon
32:42 as we were just like yes
32:47 yes we've got Carlton. That uh doesn't
32:51 make me feel terribly good. my new
32:53 favorite. Maybe no more questions about
32:55 the 99 Granny Mar. They're just they're
32:57 too hurt. They're too such much pain.
32:59 Don't mention the 98 Granny. Yeah. No,
33:01 no, not for you anyway. No. So, we 1998.
33:04 I'm glad you got us back to 98. If
33:05 people were watching uh Winston's
33:07 highlight packages, and you're a student
33:09 of this man's football that you may have
33:11 not noticed, two glaring omissions. One
33:14 of the greatest goals ever kicked and
33:15 one of the greatest marks ever kicked.
33:17 They both came from this man in 1998.
33:20 So, let's go to the goal first. It was
33:22 against Collingwood and let's just words
33:25 don't do it justice so let's just relive
33:27 the moment course goes very early
33:30 Francis tried to get through in the
33:31 center long m well done and Abraham
33:35 brone fantastic football through the
33:38 center oh could he kick a goal could
33:40 this left foot go through it does it's
33:44 just absolutely
33:51 pangy You played the game at a very high
33:52 level, but that is that is a very very
33:55 special piece of football. It was fine.
33:59 No, Winston. It's an amazing goal,
34:01 right? It's an amazing goal. But it
34:02 didn't win goal of the year, did it?
34:03 What? I beg you, pard. No, it didn't win
34:05 goal of the year. You're kidding. No,
34:07 because it was I've done my research.
34:09 Round 11 that that week. Y uh Winston
34:13 keep that kicked that amazing goal.
34:16 Didn't win goal of the year. Goal of the
34:17 year. Uh let's have a look at that and
34:20 we'll just you know just be the judge.
34:21 Jeff Farmer's one goal of the year that
34:23 year.
34:25 Colin the game was the target but they
34:26 don't have a crummer at ground level.
34:28 Pounced on by Farmer. He's kicked a
34:30 couple already. He's dangerous. The
34:31 Wizard runs the center wing. Pops it
34:34 short to Gary line and keeps running.
34:36 The Wizard. He's got it. He's going to
34:39 take him on. Runs to 50. Great play.
34:42 This could go through but bounces. It's
34:44 a goal.
34:46 play Jeffrey Farmer.
34:51 Rare rare footage there of Gary line
34:53 giving off a handball. But Winston, do
34:56 you feel hard jud hard done by looking
34:59 at those goals back to back? Do you feel
35:00 hard done by? No. No. I
35:03 um I think I think we both were in the
35:07 talks for mark of the year that year. So
35:10 I got mark of the year. So we'll get to
35:12 Like I said, I did uh I did my research
35:14 that those both those goals were um in
35:16 round 119. So, not only did you not win
35:18 goal of the year, you didn't even win
35:20 goal of the week that Jeff Farmer Jeff
35:23 Farmer got both of them Winston.
35:27 So, you mentioned it wasn't all bad. You
35:29 mentioned the mark of the year
35:30 contention of course because 1998 again
35:33 it was 7 weeks later Mickey and now this
35:35 is to this day this sort of defies all
35:39 sorts of physics and logic this mark
35:41 that he took in camera again words don't
35:43 do it justice so let's just let's just
35:45 go to the video
35:47 somebody who can kick long Wayne Kerry
35:50 he
35:56 puts reaching overhead It's special. A
35:59 big run, a big launch, and a big big
36:02 ramp.
36:04 Extraordinary. A bit to unpack there.
36:06 Let's take a Can you talk us through
36:08 what's going on here? So, as the ball
36:10 comes in from the duck, there you are.
36:12 Right out there almost on the flank. Are
36:14 you got this covered at this point? Have
36:17 I got it covered? Well, well, the answer
36:19 is yes.
36:21 I can't believe how far away from that
36:23 pack you jumped.
36:25 Oh, look. It's it was a weird feeling
36:28 because that I I jumped and and the ball
36:31 was miles away. It
36:33 was suddenly the the wind hit it and
36:36 next minute is in my hands. Dang. Well,
36:38 I hope you won two cars for that. It's
36:42 the mark of the year. Mark of the year.
36:43 Yeah. What'd you get? Well, 97
36:48 Mitsubishi sponsored. 98 Cadbury
36:51 sponsored it. Right.
36:55 And in 99 Mitsubishi.
36:58 So what did you get? I got chocolates.
37:02 Oh no.
37:04 So I decided it's a car. I decided it's
37:08 a car and you get a couple of blocks of
37:09 chocolate. I got 10 kilos of chocolate.
37:12 I think Glen Glenn Arch ate six of them.
37:15 Okay. Tell me it was a family block.
37:18 Tell me what was it? Family block. It
37:21 was about as big. Yeah. So I went a
37:23 while. So please tell me that was the
37:24 best mark you ever took. Uh no it
37:28 wasn't. What was the best mark you ever
37:30 took? When I was playing juniors in
37:32 Naran back in when I was about 15 I
37:35 reckon I took a mark in in I standing on
37:39 this guy's shoulders just standing
37:42 straight up and and landed on my feet.
37:45 So he's standing up and your your feet
37:47 on his shoulders similar similar to that
37:49 similar to that one. I've jumped from
37:50 about 4 m away, 5 m. Is there any Is
37:53 there any vision of it? No photo.
37:55 There's probably there's probably a clip
37:56 in the paper in the observer, but not
37:58 Winston. There's no footage, so it's
38:00 very hard to prove.
38:02 Yeah, most all those people are dead.
38:04 No.
38:05 No, I shouldn't say that. We'll give you
38:07 a Marsbar.
38:08 Yeah. Are you going to be sticking
38:10 around for the footy this week? I know
38:11 you got the North Melbourne jumper
38:13 there. I think the North Melbourne
38:14 jumper's behind you. The jumpers are
38:15 such a great uh display of culture and
38:19 storytelling. Jumper. There's the North
38:20 Jumper. Are you going to be sticking
38:21 around watching the footy this weekend?
38:23 Yeah. Yep. Um trying to get some tickets
38:25 for Friday night and then and then go to
38:28 Saturday night game. Yep. You watching
38:30 much footy these days? Yeah. Yeah. I'll
38:32 try and look My wife and I run a net
38:35 club, right? So on Saturdays we're we're
38:38 out from 7 till 5. Yeah. Right. We run
38:40 the Genders Nipple Club and um Yeah. So
38:44 we're busy on Saturdays and then you you
38:47 never get to watch you never get to
38:49 watch a footy and then
38:52 Sundays and daughter plays nipple. Yeah.
38:55 Um both boys play footy.
38:59 Can I just point out it's taking a bit
39:00 of a turn this week.
39:03 We just get start sending Winston some
39:04 highlights or something so we can see.
39:06 Also, did you need did you say you need
39:07 tickets to the game on Friday? Yeah.
39:11 To sort that out. You're the boss. the
39:13 king maker. Oh, there he is. Consider it
39:16 done.
39:19 Not only
39:23 I'll tell you what else I've done. I'll
39:24 tell you what else I've done because
39:26 it's been so long and because you didn't
39:28 get the Mitsubishi. I rang Mitsubishi.
39:31 No, this John Rang Mishi during the week
39:34 told them the story and I said, "Where
39:37 are we at with this?" And they went,
39:38 "You know what? will make good. What?
39:40 And I'm telling you, this is what
39:42 they've done. They've got some more
39:44 chalkies for you.
39:48 Get your fishy.
39:50 You
39:51 got it. Got your f got your favorites.
39:56 The roses are in. Get your hands off.
39:58 Sorry. Sorry. These are for Winston. All
40:00 right. Good. Hey, Winston. everything
40:03 you did on the footy field through 110
40:05 games in this league. It's remarkable
40:07 what you're able to do and it's been a
40:09 joy for us to relive with you. Thanks
40:11 for coming on. Enjoy the weekend, mate.
40:12 Can I just say something? Yeah. Yeah.
40:14 Just a shout out to the Nunga Golf Club
40:16 back home and and the DRS DRSC bangers.
40:20 Yeah. Yeah. There you go. Nothing for
40:22 the net
40:25 club. Winston
40:28 Abraham Steven Long to join us next.
40:43 Please welcome the unstoppable Mr.
40:46 Steven Michael. He was just one of those
40:48 freaks of human
40:50 nature. He just knew where to go to get
40:52 the ball. placed 243 games for his
40:55 beloved South between 1975 and 1985. My
41:01 first impression as a player it was that
41:03 he's a gangly young kid that had
41:05 enormous talent. He won 778, 79, 81 and
41:09 83. He won the best and fairest of
41:12 South. He won two Sand medals. We had
41:15 some good ruckmen but within uh two
41:18 seasons he just leaprogged a whole lot
41:20 of them. He was a magnificent tackler.
41:22 He could fly in there and take a mark
41:23 standing on your head. He had many an
41:25 injury which would have kept other
41:26 players out but he never he never missed
41:28 work. I think you know when there was
41:30 grand final celebrations he was back on
41:31 the truck the next day. The only time he
41:33 got injured was he went kangaroo
41:36 shooting. The bloke shot him in the ass
41:38 with a shotgun. They talk about people
41:40 that should get statues. I reckon one
41:42 day Steven will get a statue in free.
41:45 I think we agree with you Malcolm Brown.
41:48 Welcome back to the show for Han. our
41:50 good uh it is a joy as this incredible
41:52 night continues here for us on the front
41:55 bar to welcome to the program two
41:57 genuine living legends of the game of
41:59 Australian rules of football. They're
42:01 both well known to this program, both
42:03 friends of the show. Please make them
42:05 welcome, Michael Long and Steven.
42:07 Michael, everybody,
42:14 thanks for coming, boys.
42:17 It's it's a pleasure to have you here
42:18 and the culmination of a great night for
42:20 us. It's a great round of football and
42:22 congratulations being the ambassador for
42:24 the round. Stephen, a great honor. Are
42:26 you enjoying it so far? It is very No,
42:28 it's it's it's a great
42:30 um legacy if that makes sense. You know,
42:32 where people put a lot of pride on into
42:35 me and all that. But only thing I'm a
42:36 bit worried about, how come you three
42:38 guys are doing the panel? Can't we get
42:40 any color up there?
42:44 Well, that's a good shot. Can I just Can
42:47 I just say one thing, Ste? I feel like I
42:49 feel like I'm flying the flag a little
42:50 bit.
42:55 Good to see you, brother.
42:57 But going back to that, that's, you
43:00 know, you look at the great poly farmer,
43:02 um, Billy Dempsey, Sid Jackson, Michael
43:05 and myself, you know, you couldn't ask
43:08 for very good, uh, role models for
43:12 indigenous people. And I think, you
43:14 know, all we try to do is make sure that
43:16 all kids, not just indigenous kids, all
43:18 kids get benefit out of it. How was it
43:21 down there today? We know this is going
43:22 to be a, you know, a celebration of the,
43:25 you know, indigenous contribution of
43:26 this game. How was it down at the MCG
43:29 today as we're getting ready for what's
43:30 going to be a big weekend? It was bloody
43:32 cold. I imagine it would have been cold
43:34 down there. Yeah, it was great. I mean I
43:36 mean the launch of it and the the
43:38 players and obviously 10 years of you
43:41 know the past Doug Nicholls and uh and
43:44 see the players. I mean they talk about
43:46 this week and you know the celebration.
43:48 And it was good to see um those players
43:50 embracing this weekend. There's a lot a
43:52 lot of functions on as we're celebrating
43:54 the indigenous contribution to the game.
43:56 You had a big lunch today. It's your
43:58 lunch. Uh Longy and I believe you ran
44:00 into this bloke here. Was he was hosting
44:02 your lunch? Did he ruin it? Like what
44:04 happened? Did he ruin? What was he like?
44:07 Terrible.
44:09 I could not believe he was there and he
44:12 didn't say a bloody word.
44:15 I think the boys show really. Yes, the
44:18 word you used off air was [ __ ] out.
44:21 I've been nice. Lonnie, this is where
44:23 you come in and defend me. I love you,
44:25 brother. Um I I thought you did uh a
44:29 good show. Ronnie Burns was he was
44:31 outstanding there. Chrissy Johnson, Jay
44:33 [ __ ] and two Collins. Um but um yeah,
44:36 we had a bit of fun today and obviously
44:37 the 30 years of the racial vilification
44:40 policy. Um and those guys have been a
44:43 huge contribution to to where the game
44:45 is today. So, it was it was great. And
44:48 the great city Jackson was there. Um, I
44:50 didn't realize he was in the audience,
44:51 but uh the long walk. We've been going
44:54 for 21 years and yes, we've got the walk
44:56 on Friday and it's first time Friday
44:59 night. So, we'd love everyone to come
45:01 down and and to be a part of it because
45:03 this is a great celebration, Mick of uh
45:06 this week and yeah, it's so um one of
45:10 the week I look forward to. Yeah, it's
45:11 just such a great game. I love the dream
45:13 time game this year, as you point out,
45:15 on Friday night for the first time.
45:17 It'll be It's always magnificent.
45:19 There's a great pre-show. I know Briggs
45:21 involved. It's going to be terrific. Um,
45:24 and if you've never been part of it, you
45:26 want to get down to the MCG cuz it's an
45:29 extraordinary atmosphere. Is involved or
45:32 I think I've done enough for you.
45:35 No, I can I just defend myself? So, the
45:37 long walk today was the long lunch. Long
45:40 he rings me. I'm thinking you know uh of
45:42 anything for you. I'll do anything you
45:44 want. He says I need you to I want you
45:45 to MC a panel with all those
45:48 unbelievable play. I said oh yeah what
45:49 just a bit of fun? He goes well it's
45:50 just about you know it's about it's 30
45:52 years since Anzac Day. 30 years since
45:55 you know you you stood up and then the
45:57 long walk and reconciliation and
45:59 vilification. I go oh yeah sounds like
46:02 it'll be a bit of fun.
46:03 Um what what do you want me to do with
46:06 that long? He goes oh you know pangying
46:07 just have fun with it.
46:11 No, no. The walk starts at 5:30, so get
46:13 there, of course. Yeah. Uh I mean, just
46:16 in case you're unaware at all of the
46:18 status of these two gentlemen. The
46:20 indigenous team of the century was
46:21 announced a few years ago. And amongst
46:23 this lineup of absolute legends, they're
46:25 both part of this team. Rightfully so.
46:27 Michael and Steven are part of this
46:29 team.
46:30 of all the things you've done in footy
46:31 of course that's that would still sit I
46:34 imagine pretty high up on the list of
46:36 achievements to be part of that team.
46:38 Yeah, great great honor and um you look
46:41 at the color of people that that are a
46:43 part of it and um the legacy with South
46:47 Free Manal as well and Mel Brown and
46:50 there were a lot of players from Dharma
46:51 like Benny Vagona, Basil Campbell,
46:53 Morris Rioli, Cibby Rioli um and Willie
46:57 Row um they were trailblazers that time
47:00 and uh you know to to be a part of that
47:04 is just um it is amazing. Some of those
47:06 things you'd never forget. Long, can I I
47:08 say this every time I see this this
47:10 team. Are you are you as surprised as I
47:13 am that Prime Minister John Howard made
47:15 the team?
47:17 He was a good raman. He was a good
47:18 raman. I thought he was an odd choice.
47:22 But anyway, I'm not I've got nothing to
47:24 do with uh Michael the Blake next year
47:27 was a freak. We we never got to see him
47:29 over here. Not not through lack of
47:31 trying. Every I reckon every team wanted
47:33 Steven Michael to be part of it.
47:36 Did did you did you see him play? Did
47:38 you see any TV? Did you see any
47:39 highlights of him when you were growing
47:41 up? You always heard about the legacy of
47:44 this great man. And um um but not only
47:46 what he'd done on the field, but but off
47:48 the field, what he continues to do with
47:50 his foundation um and South Men's always
47:54 had a a strong relationship with Darwin.
47:56 So um you know, and you only hear good
48:00 things about this man and got it. Was
48:03 there any position you couldn't play?
48:05 No, not many.
48:08 No, I I was pretty well, you know, in
48:10 the early days I was a was a legend for
48:14 forward, but I didn't kick many goals
48:15 when I come out to South Man. So, you
48:17 know, a lot of my kicks was um bit of a
48:19 hookie kick. Must have had a crack at
48:21 getting you over that. Who had a go? Who
48:24 had a go to get you? There's a few clubs
48:25 that had a very good go. You know, I
48:28 tell the story about Dong, a great club,
48:30 don't get me wrong. Went down there. I
48:32 said, "Come have a look at our ground.
48:34 six inches of bloody mud and I think gez
48:36 if you call this the football over then
48:38 it rained when we have the barbecue and
48:41 I said no
48:44 I can see why s kilda didn't have a go
48:46 at you would have love my rabbin mate
48:47 you would have loved it we saw a picture
48:48 here with north Melbourne North
48:50 Melbourne they had a go at you as well
48:51 at this lunch today Kevin sheet said
48:53 that he tried to get you to quite a few
48:55 Richmond did too so I got genuine
48:58 question and you may have answered it
48:59 before but I've never so why didn't you
49:01 come my my biggest um um thing was that
49:06 my parents took me around to every footy
49:08 game in the country when I was young
49:11 growing up. You know, they give their
49:12 time up. Uh we didn't have much money
49:15 cuz the old man worked on the railways
49:16 and there's a family of 10 of us in the
49:18 kids and all I did was just wanted him
49:22 to come watch us play footy at eyes
49:24 level. You know, would have been eyes
49:25 level over but mom and dad wouldn't have
49:27 made cuz you know they had to travel two
49:29 hours get on a plane. and mom and dad
49:31 would never ever get on a plane and
49:32 drive down to Jalong. So, better be a
49:36 big fish in a little pond, achieve
49:38 everything up there. So, it's not about
49:40 making milestones or look at brand loan
49:44 medals or stand over medals. All I want
49:46 to do is play football and return the
49:47 favor. Well done to you. That's
49:55 Now, you me you me you mentioned the
49:58 cold. You didn't like the cold. He
49:59 didn't like the wet loggy. You had
50:01 trouble adapting as well. In fact, at
50:04 training or after training, you used to
50:05 jump into a sauna. And if we have a look
50:08 here, you're the only bloke I ever know
50:10 he's gone into a sauna wearing a long
50:12 sleeve jumper. And is still not
50:15 sweating. That's a bloke who's coming
50:17 from a very arid region. Long that was
50:19 your footy card that year.
50:22 I cut for 30 35°. So that was my first
50:26 year. But I reckon it was the wetest
50:28 year I reckon when the MCG was a mud
50:31 pile. So um that was my introduction
50:34 coming from uh Darwin. Well, you stuck
50:36 at it and you carved out a magnificent
50:38 career. I'll ask you as we look at
50:40 Nick's highlights, Steven. Did you see
50:42 much of him when he was playing only on
50:45 uh on the winners and all that, you
50:46 know, that kind of stuff? Because um I
50:48 always remember a day where he run down
50:50 the middle of the ground kicking a goal.
50:51 So, you know, these highlights always
50:53 stick in and we look at say what we I
50:56 call them family members of our race and
50:58 that, you know, we look at each other
50:59 and say, "Right, you know, this guy's a
51:01 champion." He was a magnificent player.
51:03 Would you like to have shared a footy
51:05 ground with him and shared a jumper at
51:06 some stage on the way through
51:09 in WA? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Of
51:11 course. Yeah. So, we we I mean, we've
51:13 we've had the current players and we've
51:16 had you two and Winnie here today. You
51:18 met the boys earlier, Bobby and and Cos.
51:21 Um, how is the state of the game? We
51:24 know the numbers are are diminished from
51:26 from 5 years ago, 87 down to 62 from
51:29 2020 to 2025 indigenous players in the
51:32 AFL. You're getting well represented by
51:35 the players that are in the league. But
51:36 Mick, have you got a is there a reason
51:38 for why the numbers have dipped in the
51:39 last 5 years?
51:42 uh that there's probably various reasons
51:43 why but we also asking clubs you know
51:46 like um let let's um work with the clubs
51:49 and and uh let's improve the numbers you
51:52 know um like like with anything um we we
51:56 want to help resource we want to help
51:57 support clubs if we need to address
52:00 issues um and we love this game just as
52:03 much as anyone and the the things that
52:06 Bobby Hill brings to the game uh our
52:08 indigenous players is special and unique
52:11 And um we don't want to see that drop.
52:13 No, Steve. And um we want to see that
52:16 improve and uh yeah, look, it it's
52:18 everyone's going to be a part of it, not
52:20 just the AFL. It's going to be all clubs
52:22 and we want to see it back to where it
52:24 should be. Well, you keep doing your bit
52:26 and you do over in WA. I mean, the
52:28 foundation's more than just footies and
52:30 it's more than just sport. I mean, tell
52:31 us what you do over there, Stephen. What
52:34 we do over there? Um go to different
52:35 places. We go right up to Marble Bar,
52:38 Mega, Canavan, Geraldton. Go down south
52:41 to Bustlin and all that. What we do is
52:43 take um well, first the foundation is a
52:46 Steve Michael foundation and it's for
52:48 all kids, boys, indigenous kids and
52:50 non-indigenous kids because I'm a great
52:52 believer. We have got to be united as
52:56 one to get on in this world. Y and
52:58 that's what we do. We go around do all
52:59 that. And you know, I know Sam got a lot
53:02 of money and all I say to Sam, you know,
53:04 if could you just throw a couple million
53:07 towards our foundation?
53:09 Consider it done.
53:12 Consider it done. Unbelievable.
53:17 I'm giving Winston Abraham two tickets
53:19 for Friday night. You're coughing up 2
53:21 mil.
53:23 There is a way. What are you doing?
53:24 There is a way that other I'm going to
53:26 go to the foundation and grab some
53:27 stuff. What? There's some there's some
53:29 merch available that can help you fund
53:31 the programs that you're running via the
53:33 foundation website, isn't there? Yes,
53:34 there is. Y So, that is vital for you if
53:37 Oh, it is. But, you know, we we rely on
53:39 a lot of um say mining industries
53:42 sponsorship and all that. So, you know,
53:44 it's um very very hard. I met uh the
53:47 prime minister. We've got a picture of
53:49 this here. What did do you saw the
53:51 opportunity? What did you say to the
53:53 prime minister? What I said to him, I
53:55 couldn't remember his last name. His
53:56 name was Anthony, but I couldn't
53:57 remember his. So, I just walked and
54:00 said, "How you going, brother?"
54:04 What What do you think of his technique
54:05 there with the ball, by the way? Oh, no.
54:07 Pretty good. Pretty good. He It's
54:09 amazing.
54:11 It's amazing that group there he didn't
54:13 want to get rid of. Yeah. He spoke to us
54:15 for quite a long normally group he's
54:17 been getting in there couple seconds, a
54:18 couple minutes and out. But he stayed
54:20 with us for long, but he didn't give us
54:22 any money. Well, we'll keep chipping
54:24 away. You and I have that in common.
54:27 Hey, we'll have a word to the prime
54:30 minister and we'll make that right. I
54:32 will. We will in the really busy. Give
54:35 me the give me the phone.
54:39 Stephen, I noticed on the way in you had
54:40 something tucked under your arm and it's
54:42 down by the bar. What What What have you
54:43 brought in? just um there's a there's a
54:45 bit of a picture going there and we
54:47 can't well or not we can't we can take
54:50 it home. Yeah. But I'll have to donate
54:52 this to you guys and say right put it up
54:53 in your wall somewhere and say world
54:55 it's worth 2 million. So
55:00 can
55:01 we how do you feel about us putting that
55:04 on the set?
55:06 Can we have it on the set? Putting put
55:08 it right there. You can put it where you
55:09 want to put it. All right. That sounded
55:10 like a threat.
55:13 We know what is it by what is that all
55:15 is that the all your stats? Yeah, I
55:17 think so.
55:18 Yeah. I think so. Yeah. Good man. That
55:22 is beautiful.
55:26 Fellas, you're the first guest to bring
55:28 us a gift. We thank you. Michael, it
55:31 wouldn't be this week without you
55:33 popping by and you know how much we love
55:35 you on this program. Lovely to see you
55:37 in such good nick. And Steve, thanks for
55:38 coming back. And as honorary of S Doug
55:40 Nichols round, hopefully enjoy
55:42 everything that sits in front of you
55:44 across this amazing weekend of foot,
55:45 mate. Thanks to the pair of you for
55:46 coming. One thing I'd like to say, Sam
55:48 didn't ask my name then was my mom was.
55:50 She's still going okay. Sam,
55:54 what is wrong with you? Steven, how's
55:57 your million? How's your How's your mom?
55:59 Mom's going okay. She's in hospital at
56:01 the moment, but she's she's going very
56:02 well. She's 91 years of age, so she's
56:04 going very good. Well, she's the same
56:05 much same age as Andy, then. That's
56:07 great.
56:10 Michael, don't go anywhere. The multi up
56:13 there. Look at that. That's beautiful,
56:15 mate.
56:28 Welcome back to the show. Suck Nichols
56:30 round. It is the bumper for how good. Uh
56:33 there's a lot to look forward to this
56:34 weekend. There's a lot of news still
56:35 rolling. Just before we get to it, we
56:38 have to cross back to the builders where
56:41 the front bar Jouro has got a latest
56:47 what that is unbelievable. And oh no, I
56:52 mean he's representing us. He he could
56:54 he could have won a walk tonight and
56:56 look at him. He probably won the meat
56:58 raffle. He probably won the raffle.
57:00 That's that bouncer will be kicking him
57:02 out. He will always the best in the
57:04 business.
57:06 Uh some good footy to look forward to
57:08 this weekend. I mean, it doesn't get
57:09 much better than tomorrow night down at
57:10 Chalong. The Bailey Smith game. We're
57:12 all looking forward to how that one
57:14 plays out. Uh dream time on Friday
57:16 night's going to be fantastic. Uh C.
57:19 Don't forget the pre-match with Briggsy.
57:21 It's going to be great. It's going to be
57:23 awesome. Him and Mushroom have been
57:24 organizing a very good pre-match. It'll
57:27 be one for the ages. No, we're looking
57:28 forward to that, of course. and um uh
57:31 some milestones of note this weekend.
57:33 Mitch I mean Mitch Duncan's 300th game
57:35 gets overlooked uh tomorrow night
57:37 because of the Bailey Smith focus, but
57:39 he's been a magnificent servant for the
57:41 Julon footy club. Toby Green, what a
57:43 player he's been plays his 250th. And
57:44 Christian Petra, friend of the program,
57:46 plays his 200th. Toby Green would have
57:48 played 400 if he hadn't been suspended.
57:52 How many did you play? 250. 250th. Yeah.
57:55 Jet and GWS are hoping for 250 fans to
57:58 draw up celebrate.
58:01 You're down. You're down on their crowd
58:03 numbers, aren't you? I'm still shadowed.
58:05 Steven Michael just took me to shreds
58:07 for a second over there. You two You two
58:09 did nothing to protect me. He's asked
58:11 you for 2 million. I was looking forward
58:13 to what he's going to ask us to do. Are
58:15 you good for it or not? Yeah. Yeah.
58:16 Yeah. Good. Time now for the multi. Oh,
58:19 here we go.
58:27 Here we go. Uh, this has got to be a
58:28 good one. Get involved. Feeling good
58:30 about it. I'm feeling good about this
58:31 one. Let's crack into it. Uh, first up
58:34 and big news this week is Nathan Buckley
58:37 uh has thrown his head into the ring to
58:39 become the coach of the new Tazzy team.
58:41 It's in all the news shows. It's in all
58:43 the footy shows. You've heard a lot
58:45 about it. There is a news tear. Uh, I'd
58:48 like to wager that I've got exclusive
58:51 exclusive images of him taking their
58:57 call. There he
58:59 is. I'm available.
59:03 By the way, that phone, that's still
59:05 cutting edge technology in Tasmania.
59:08 That is that's like a mobile. You can't
59:10 have it. But how about you have Bobby
59:11 Hill to kick two or more against North
59:13 and I'll give you 163. I'll take it.
59:16 Second leg now before the Swans Carlton
59:18 a match at the SCG. The turn styles
59:21 malfunctioned uh taking down all the
59:23 gates leaving punters locked out of the
59:25 stadium. There's the turn styles. Uh sad
59:28 scenes for footy fans trying to get in.
59:31 Uh also uh I'd like to wager the same
59:35 malfunction was responsible for Carlton
59:38 fans not being able to get out at three
59:40 point time.
59:43 Can I Can I have it? No, Nick, you can't
59:46 have it. But how about you take Carlton
59:48 to beat the Giants at the line and you
59:50 have a $1 190 for that. What do you
59:51 reckon? I'll take it third leg. Now,
59:54 it's usually the job of the DJ uh to
59:57 keep it rolling to keep people up and
59:58 about. Well, at the Essen game, that
60:00 proved not to be the case uh as this guy
60:04 just dropped the ball when they were 90
60:06 points down. Let's cut to the DJ uh to
60:08 pep it up.
60:13 And 30 seconds to go into the last
60:15 quarter.
60:19 And that's not great.
60:22 I'd like to wager you can choose from
60:24 the following. That DJ's name is Fat
60:27 Board
60:28 Slim or
60:31 or Fat Boy Sleep.
60:36 Can I have another You got another
60:37 choice. highlight. Do you have any
60:39 Winston Abraham highlights? Got a
60:41 Winston Abraham highlight just to play
60:42 just to just to get the crowd back at
60:44 home. We might have one. Yeah.
60:49 Have a look at the scoreboard by the
60:50 way. 128 to 121. It's a clutch goal.
60:53 That's when footy was great. This is the
60:56 golden era of footy. It was the multi.
61:00 No, Mickey, you can't have it. But then
61:02 you have Bailey Dale to kit 30 or more
61:05 and you can have two. Get back now.
61:08 Final leg. Final leg. Had 49 last week.
61:11 Guys, guys, guys. Final leg. Right.
61:14 Sorry. Oh, sorry. It's almost over. No,
61:16 it's it's going to be worth it when you
61:19 see where I'm going. I'm ready. Wait.
61:22 Buckle up.
61:25 Uh, maybe
61:27 not. Look at this. Uh,
61:32 now you know and I know there's nothing
61:36 worse than getting caught in traffic. I
61:38 know. But imagine you're coming home and
61:41 you just or you're going to work and all
61:44 you want to do is get there on time and
61:46 you see this. I know. On the on the
61:51 road. It's a gopher fight. It's a gopher
61:55 fight. Guys, guys, settle down. But this
62:00 has this has roadkill written all over
62:01 it. By the
62:02 way, I'd like to wager that that guy's
62:06 boss is not going to believe him when he
62:09 says, "I'm really sorry I'm late, but I
62:12 was held up by two gophers fighting.
62:21 You can't No, boss. You can't have it.
62:24 No, boss.
62:25 to see you. Sorry, boss. I'm really
62:29 sorry, but I was coming to work and I
62:32 was on time, but there were two gophers,
62:35 aren't you? Fighting. Yes. No one's
62:38 going to believe it. No, you they won't
62:40 believe it. I can't believe it. No, but
62:41 you can't have it anyway. Uh, it's the
62:43 last leg. It's got tears coming
62:47 out fighting. It's a road rage. What
62:50 about What about you Mason Redmond? He
62:52 said you have 24 or more off back and
62:54 you have 220. What do you reckon?
62:55 Couldn't care less. Just
62:58 that. Look at that. 17. No, we care
63:01 about that. There it is. Get on the
63:02 feed. By the way, if you like I'd rather
63:04 bet on a golfers. Jump onto the feed if
63:06 you like pay-per-view. I would get I
63:08 would watch those gophers on a
63:09 pay-per-view channel. Jump on the feed
63:12 in the Sorry, boss. I was on the freeway
63:14 in the sports bet. Two Gophers. Find and
63:18 follow Mix Multi. And of course, no
63:19 one's believing that. Place your bet.

63:58 Welcome back to the show. The last shout
64:00 of course. Uh we are I mean we love
64:02 these jumpers. We've talked about it for
64:03 the last two weeks. The
64:06 Richmond Michael Long's over at the bar
64:08 of course hanging on to the Essin and
64:09 jumper. They are great stories on every
64:12 single jumper and the way that the
64:14 stories are personally told now by
64:16 people who are involved with the footy
64:17 club m just so fantastic. It's a great
64:19 addition to every season that we have
64:22 now in the in the AFL that the footy
64:24 jumpers in S Doug Nichols round. So, uh
64:27 there's a lot to uh a lot to take in and
64:29 a lot to appreciate. Steven, what do you
64:31 what do you happy? Your legend.
64:36 We got a shot of it. There it is. There
64:38 it is. What do you reckon? That goes all
64:40 right, doesn't it? That is Yeah. No. No.
64:43 Very nice indeed. Well, while we're
64:44 celebrating, uh, well, we've celebrated
64:46 everyone tonight, but I would have
64:47 thought long, you know, you've been on a
64:49 lot of time, so we probably gave, you
64:50 know, Longie a bit of a bit more of a
64:52 backseat tonight. Let the others shine.
64:53 But I wanted to, just in case the others
64:56 haven't, you may have forgotten how good
64:57 this man was in Well, the young fellas
64:59 might not have seen this. Well, this is
65:01 particular. People ask us to play
65:02 because Bobby, this is this is Michael
65:04 Long and uh this moment from the 1993
65:07 grand final with this handball to Gavin
65:09 Wanganine. It's just uh just we
65:11 generally marvel at how good that
65:13 handball was and you know because long a
65:17 lot of there's a lot of different
65:18 highlights we can play every time you
65:19 come in. I just wanted to say that that
65:20 is is marvelous but also regular viewers
65:23 of our show would know that we're
65:25 contractually obliged um to play this
65:28 clip of you talking about that special
65:30 connection that you and Gavin Wanganine
65:33 have. Yep. sort of mental telepathy. So
65:36 me and Gavin sort of call each other,
65:37 you know, by
65:39 uh on by phone, I suppose.
65:48 No, it's your it's the best ever. Best
65:50 thing ever. Oh, he's upgraded his phone
65:52 now. Hey fellas, thanks for coming on.
65:55 Uh to the two young BS who are going to
65:57 play this weekend, we really appreciate
65:59 it. and to those who came before and the
66:00 footsteps that you follow in Michael,
66:03 Steven, and Winston. We we love this
66:05 weekend. Uh we love last week as the
66:08 precursor and uh this show is really
66:10 special to everyone at the Front Bar
66:11 that we get to share uh the platform or
66:14 you you allow us to share the platform
66:16 with you fellas this weekend. So, thanks
66:18 so much for coming on the show. It means
66:19 a lot to us. So, please put your hands
66:22 together for these magnificent
66:25 footballers. That's it. We're done and
66:27 dusted. Uh, next week on the show,
66:29 Lawrence Mooney returns Wednesday night
66:31 8:30. Keith Greg, twotime Brownway
66:33 medalist. He's going to join us on the
66:35 program. A lot to look forward to. Enjoy
66:37 your footy over the weekend. Thanks.
66:39 Thank you.
