0:44 I read many books and I can always tell
0:46 when I'm reading a book whether or not
0:48 the person who wrote it really has
0:52 experienced what is written oh how easy
0:54 it is for us to write books for other
0:56 people or preach sermons to other people
0:59 and tell them how they should do it
1:02 Peter had experienced failure he knew
1:05 how to trust the grace of God for success
1:06 success
1:08 Peter knew what it was to go through
1:11 trial and difficulty and then in John
1:14 chapter 21 our lord gave Peter another
1:17 commission when he restored Peter he
1:20 said to him in verse 15.
1:26 feed my Lambs in verse 16 feed my sheep
1:28 then he repeated it in verse 17 of John
1:33 21 feed Shepherd tend my sheep so Peter
1:35 when he wrote this letter was fulfilling
1:38 a commission given to him to strengthen
1:41 the Brethren and to Shepherd the Sheep
1:44 that's an interesting comparison we are
1:47 sheep all we like sheep have gone astray
1:50 we have turned everyone to his own way
1:52 and you know we need Shepherds we need
1:56 people to guide us and help us at the
1:58 end of this letter in chapter 5
2:01 Peter talks to the elders and he tells
2:04 them to feed the flock of God verse 2
2:06 that word feed means to shepherd
2:10 shepherd the the flock of God care for
2:12 them and this is especially necessary
2:14 during these difficult days
2:18 Peter saw trouble coming Peter saw a
2:21 fiery trial around the corner and he is
2:24 strengthening the church and he is
2:26 shepherding the flock to encourage them
2:28 this is why we're going to study this book
2:29 book
2:32 because we need strengthening and we
2:34 need shepherding
2:37 more than anything else today God's
2:39 people need strengthening and
2:41 shepherding why would anybody want to
2:44 make life difficult for a Christian
2:47 we don't go around destroying things we
2:50 try to tell the truth we work hard we
2:53 seek to live lives that are a glory to
2:56 God we try to obey the word of God why
2:59 would it be that the world would
3:02 persecute Christians when Christians are
3:05 making such a wonderful contribution to
3:06 the world
3:09 well in First Peter chapter 1 Peter
3:12 describes for us the characteristics of
3:14 God's people and when you understand
3:17 these characteristics you'll understand
3:20 why the world doesn't want us around
3:22 First Peter chapter one
3:24 verse 1.
3:27 Peter an apostle of Jesus Christ to the
3:30 sojourners or the strangers scattered
3:33 throughout pontus galatia Cappadocia
3:35 Asia and bithynia
3:38 elect according to the foreknowledge of
3:41 God the Father through sanctification of
3:44 the spirit unto obedience and sprinkling
3:48 of the blood of Jesus Christ Grace unto
3:53 you and peace be multiplied this is the
3:55 area that we would probably call Turkey
3:59 this is over in Asia Minor this is the
4:01 area where Paul wanted to go but he was
4:03 not allowed to go
4:05 Paul was prohibited by the holy spirit
4:08 of God for ministering in this area acts
4:10 16 7.
4:12 but Peter was the one who ministered
4:16 primarily to the Jewish Believers you'll
4:19 recall in Galatians chapter 2 verse 9.
4:21 that Peter was set apart to be the
4:24 Apostle of the circumcision that is the
4:26 Apostle to the Jews Paul was especially
4:29 the Apostle to the Gentiles although he
4:31 did love the Jewish people and sought to
4:33 minister to them so here we have the
4:36 Apostle Peter a very special called
4:39 servant of God ministering to the people
4:41 of God now in this opening word of
4:44 greeting the Apostle Peter describes for
4:46 us the characteristics of God's people
4:49 and when you understand the
4:51 characteristics of God's people you'll
4:54 understand why the world persecutes us
4:57 and does not want us around to begin
5:02 with we are a strange people he calls us
5:04 strangers that word strangers means
5:09 sojourners aliens resident aliens a
5:13 temporary residence in this world if
5:14 ever you have traveled in another
5:17 country you know how that feels to be a
5:20 temporary resident I can recall when I
5:22 have ministered to various Mission
5:24 groups on different Mission Fields how
5:26 difficult it is when you don't know the
5:28 language here you are standing in the
5:32 Customs Department in a foreign country
5:34 in an airport and they're speaking a
5:36 language you don't understand sometimes
5:38 they're eating food in the restaurants
5:41 that you've never seen before there are
5:43 Customs that you do not really
5:45 understand we are resident aliens in
5:48 those countries well as far as this
5:51 world is concerned this world is not our
5:54 home we're just passing through in
5:56 chapter 2 verse 11 he writes dearly
5:59 beloved I beseech you as strangers and
6:02 pilgrims and so here we are our
6:06 citizenship is In Another Country what
6:08 is that country that country is heaven
6:11 Philippians chapter 3 and verse 20 we're
6:15 told but our citizenship is in heaven in
6:18 Luke 10 and verse 20 Jesus said to the
6:21 disciples Rejoice because your names are
6:25 written in heaven and so the unsaved
6:27 crowd thinks we're strange we are
6:29 strangers from God's point of view
6:31 because our citizenship is up in heaven
6:33 we are strangers from the world's point
6:35 of view because we don't live the way
6:36 they live
6:39 and so our citizenship is in heaven our
6:42 names are written in heaven our father
6:44 is in heaven our Treasures are in heaven
6:47 our hope is in heaven our vision is one
6:49 day to go to heaven
6:51 and all of our joy has to do with Heaven
6:54 therefore we're not too interested in
6:56 this world except for one thing to use
6:59 our opportunity to take others with us
7:03 to Heaven I think this is one reason why
7:05 the world doesn't like us we don't want
7:08 to settle down in this world we are
7:12 resident aliens we are pilgrims and
7:15 strangers we are only passing through
7:19 you see a fugitive is running from home
7:23 a vagabond has no home a stranger is
7:27 away from home a pilgrim is heading home
7:30 and we are pilgrims and strangers we're
7:34 away from home but we're heading home
7:36 now because we are a strange people
7:39 sojourners resident aliens we have
7:41 broken with the past
7:45 and we're living for the future and we
7:48 are unattached in the present
7:51 you see the world wants the security of
7:52 this world
7:54 and people make the statement well it's
7:57 as sure as the world I would have you to
8:00 know that nothing is more unsure than
8:02 the world the world is passing away and
8:05 the lust thereof but he that doeth the
8:08 will of God abideth forever we are a
8:11 strange people pilgrims and strangers
8:14 and the world does not want to accept
8:16 this or receive us
8:18 this is why whenever a Christian does
8:20 settle down in the world and get
8:23 comfortable that person is welcomed by
8:24 the world
8:27 you know when lot moved into Sodom it
8:29 wasn't long before he became one of the
8:32 leaders in Sodom he's sitting at the
8:35 gate when the Angels show up which means
8:38 he was one of the um one of the elders
8:41 one of the Mayors one of the council
8:45 members in Sodom and here is lot inside
8:47 him but he's not a separated man he
8:49 belongs to that Society now he didn't do
8:52 what they did and Peter tells us that
8:55 lot's righteous Soul was vexed with what
8:56 they did
8:59 but God had to take lot by the hand and
9:03 drag him out of Sodom Abraham had no
9:05 problem with Sodom Abraham lived in a
9:09 tent he was a pilgrim and a stranger
9:11 I noticed something else about God's
9:14 people they are scattered Peter an
9:16 apostle of Jesus Christ who the
9:19 strangers scattered throughout these
9:21 various areas over in Asia Minor the
9:23 word scattered means dispersed like seeds
9:25 seeds
9:28 we are a people who are scattered
9:31 throughout the world and wherever you go
9:33 you're going to find somebody who knows
9:35 the Lord Jesus Christ this is because
9:38 the gospel is for the whole world and
9:40 this is because we want to reach the
9:42 whole world with the gospel
9:44 and many of these people were where they
9:46 were because they had been persecuted
9:49 others were there because God planted
9:51 them there to bear fruit we are a
9:54 scattered people wherever you go you
9:56 find Christians I've heard unsaved
9:58 people say well I'll be glad when the
9:59 day comes there won't be any Christians
10:01 around here that day is going to come
10:04 one day God will call his people home
10:07 and the the world will have exactly what
10:10 it wants I read in the Psalms that Egypt
10:13 was glad when the Jews finally left
10:16 because of all the suffering that Egypt
10:18 had gone through because of them
10:20 and the Jews were worshiping the true
10:22 and living God and the Egyptians were
10:25 worshiping idols and the Egyptians were
10:28 glad when the Jews were gone well you
10:30 and I are strangers who are scattered
10:31 throughout this world some of God's
10:34 people are in heaven and some are here
10:36 on Earth and we're in different parts of
10:38 the world you may be listening to me
10:41 from a hospital bed wondering why am I
10:44 in this Hospital Bedwell God has put you
10:46 there he's planted you there this word
10:48 scattered means to be scattered like
10:51 seed we are spread abroad we are
10:55 dispersed like seeds and God plants us
10:57 where he wants us that we might bear
10:59 fruit don't wish that you were somewhere
11:02 else Bloom where you are planted God's
11:08 [Music]
11:11 well we are a scattered people wherever
11:12 you go you're going to find the light
11:14 shining you're going to find that where
11:16 the salt of the earth and sometimes that
11:19 salt burns the wounds in this world
11:22 where the light of the world God has
11:24 scattered us abroad like seed to bear
11:28 fruit thirdly we are a chosen people
11:30 in verse 2 you have the word elect
11:33 in the original Greek manuscript it
11:35 actually reads Peter an apostle of Jesus
11:39 Christ to the elect sojourners
11:42 we are an elect people and did you
11:45 notice in verse 2 that all three persons
11:47 of the godhead are involved in your salvation
11:48 salvation
11:50 every once in a while somebody will
11:52 write to me and say brother where's me I
11:54 don't understand election
11:56 well I remember a professor in seminary
11:59 saying try to explain election you may
12:01 lose your mind but try to explain it
12:04 away and you may lose your soul it is in
12:07 the Bible did you notice here that God
12:10 the father and God the son and God the
12:12 Holy Spirit are all involved in your salvation
12:13 salvation
12:16 elect according to the foreknowledge of
12:19 God the Father God the father has chosen us
12:20 us
12:23 through sanctification of the spirit God
12:27 the Holy Spirit has set us apart
12:30 unto obedience and sprinkling of the
12:32 blood of Jesus Christ Jesus Christ has
12:36 died for us we are chosen by the father
12:38 purchased by the son
12:41 indwelt by the holy spirit of God now it
12:44 takes all three members of the godhead
12:47 for you to be saved some people so
12:49 emphasize election they forget evangelism
12:51 evangelism
12:53 and some people so emphasize evangelism
12:56 they forget election some are always
12:57 talking about the cross and they ignore
13:01 the Holy Spirit and some alas say so
13:02 much about the Holy Spirit they forget
13:05 about the Lord Jesus Christ and the
13:07 cross would you notice please that as
13:10 far as God the father is concerned you
13:14 were saved when he chose you in Christ
13:16 before the foundation of the world you
13:20 find that in Ephesians chapter 1.
13:23 elect according to the foreign knowledge
13:25 of God the father now what does
13:27 foreknowledge mean does it mean he knew
13:30 beforehand who was going to believe well
13:32 God knows everything beforehand this
13:34 word for knowledge means more than
13:37 knowing beforehand it means planning
13:40 beforehand the same word is used over in
13:43 verse 20 talking about the Lord Jesus
13:47 who verily was for ordained before the
13:49 foundation of the world now does this
13:51 mean that God knew that his son was
13:53 going to die
13:55 or that God planned that his son was
13:57 going to die
14:00 this same word is used in Acts chapter 2
14:02 in fact Peter is the one who uses it in
14:05 his sermon at Pentecost talking about
14:08 the Lord Jesus Acts chapter 2 and verse
14:12 23. him being delivered by the
14:15 determinate Council and foreknowledge of God
14:16 God
14:19 ye have taken and by Wicked hands have
14:21 crucified and slain what does that mean
14:24 does it mean that God simply knew that
14:26 one day Jesus would die and therefore he
14:28 permitted it to happen no it means that
14:32 God planned that Jesus would die this is
14:34 the determinate counsel and
14:37 foreknowledge of God the death of Jesus
14:39 Christ was not something God knew it was
14:42 something God planned now your salvation
14:43 is not something that God knew it's
14:46 something God planned we are elect chosen
14:47 chosen
14:52 according to what the foreknowledge of
14:54 God the father so as far as God the
14:56 father is concerned you were saved when
15:00 he chose you way in advance chose you to
15:04 be in Jesus Christ but don't stop there
15:06 because the Holy Spirit has a work to do
15:09 through sanctification of the spirit the
15:13 holy spirit of God uses the word of God
15:16 to accomplish the plan of God as far as
15:19 God the father is concerned I was saved
15:22 when he chose me in Christ before the
15:24 foundation of the world as far as God
15:27 the son is concerned I was saved when he
15:30 died for me on the cross as far as God
15:33 the holy spirit is concerned I was saved
15:35 that night I yielded to the spirit's
15:38 calling and it took all three to bring
15:41 me to Salvation how does the Holy Spirit
15:44 work through the word you'll notice in
15:46 verse 22.
15:49 of First Peter chapter one seeing that
15:52 ye have purified your souls in obeying
15:55 the truth through the spirit you notice
15:58 that the holy spirit of God comes to you
16:01 with the truth of the word of God and
16:05 reveals to you the salvation of God in
16:07 Jesus Christ and then you believe and
16:10 you are born again now if you had come
16:13 to me the night I was saved and talk to
16:15 me about election I would not have known
16:17 what you were talking about
16:19 but if you come to me and say I want to
16:20 talk to you about salvation that's
16:23 something else listen to this
16:25 second Thessalonians chapter 2 verse 13
16:28 but we are bound to give thanks all we
16:31 to God for you Brethren be loved of the
16:33 Lord because God hath from the beginning
16:36 chosen you to Salvation at the election
16:40 through sanctification of the spirit and
16:42 belief of the truth you notice that
16:45 don't separate election the work of God
16:48 the father from the work of God the Holy
16:51 Spirit who takes the word of God and
16:54 calls you to Salvation And so we are
16:57 chosen by the father set apart by the
17:00 spirit unto what unto obedience and
17:02 sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ
17:05 Jesus died for us that we might be saved
17:08 we are saved through his blood
17:11 the blood of Jesus Christ shed on the
17:14 cross for us now it takes all three
17:17 don't separate one from the other God
17:19 the father and God the son and God the
17:21 Holy Spirit work together in your
17:25 salvation we are an elect chosen people
17:28 in fact Peter likes this word call you
17:30 notice that when you read first Peter
17:34 verse 15 as he who hath called you is Holy
17:35 Holy
17:37 so be ye holy we're called to be Holy
17:42 Chapter 2 Verse 9. but he has called you
17:45 out of Darkness into His Marvelous Light
17:47 we're called into the light
17:51 chapter 2 verse 21 for even here unto
17:55 where ye called to follow his steps call
17:58 to imitate the Lord Jesus we're called
18:00 to inherit a blessing according to
18:04 chapter 3 verse 9 and we are called to
18:08 eternal glory according to chapter 5 and
18:12 verse 10 we are a called chosen elect
18:15 people oh what a privilege that is now
18:17 the world doesn't like this
18:19 the world does not like it because we
18:21 say look we're going to heaven we don't
18:23 live the way you people live we're we're
18:25 a chosen people
18:28 the Gentile Nations hated the Jewish
18:30 Nation when they said we are a chosen
18:33 people chosen by God
18:36 well we are Pilgrim people we're
18:38 scattered people we're chosen people
18:41 we're in obedient people verse 2 tells
18:44 us in First Peter chapter 1 unto
18:48 obedience obedience is important in this
18:49 particular letter
18:52 he tells us in verse 14 as obedient
18:55 children not fashioning yourselves
18:57 according to the former lust in your
19:01 ignorance obedient children verse 22
19:03 seeing that ye have purified your souls
19:06 in obeying the truth through the spirit
19:09 this is why the world doesn't like us
19:12 because we obey God and the world
19:14 disobeys God
19:17 chapter 4 verse 4 in which they think
19:20 it's strange that you run that with them
19:24 to the same excess of Riot speaking evil
19:27 of you they think we're crazy why
19:30 because we obey the word of God
19:34 Peter said we should obey God and not men
19:35 men
19:38 and all around us is pressure to disobey
19:40 the word of God we're an obedient people
19:42 and because we're obedient the world
19:45 does not like us the world wants us to
19:48 run with them to all the foul dirty
19:50 things that are going on we say no we're
19:52 not interested we're on our way to
19:55 heaven we're pilgrims we're strangers we
19:57 don't belong here why don't you come
19:59 along with us and we'll take you to
20:03 Glory as you trust Jesus as your savior
20:05 and also also in First Peter chapter 1
20:09 and verse 2 that we are an enriched
20:12 people Grace unto you and peace be
20:16 multiplied we have experienced the grace
20:18 of God and in verse 2 he talks about
20:21 abundant Mercy now look at this
20:23 multiplied Grace
20:27 multiplied peace abundant Mercy now I'd
20:30 say people don't have this
20:33 God in his grace gives me what I don't
20:36 deserve and God in his Mercy does not
20:38 give me what I do deserve
20:41 and Grace is one of the themes of First
20:45 Peter the true grace of God we are an
20:48 enriched people we've experienced God's
20:52 grace we have God's peace according to
20:55 His abundant Mercy we've been begotten
20:57 again unto a Living Hope what a
21:00 thrilling thing it is to be a Christian
21:02 and the world doesn't like us because
21:04 we're a pilgrim people a scattered
21:08 people a chosen people and obedient
21:11 people and enriched people but we're
21:14 going to be the people of God because he
21:17 saved us by his grace we're looking
21:20 forward to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ
21:21 Christ
21:23 because it's going to be a time of reunion
21:25 reunion
21:28 the older we get the more we are
21:30 separated from those we love and for
21:32 those who care for us so much
21:35 it seems like the older we get the more
21:36 friends we have in heaven than we have
21:39 here on Earth it'll be a time of reunion
21:42 it'll be a time of redemption we'll have
21:46 new bodies glorified bodies that will
21:49 exalt the Lord Jesus Christ in their
21:51 Radiance and their Glory
21:56 or so often we feel the shackles of this
21:59 Mortal body of ours so often we feel the burden
22:00 burden
22:04 of just having a body that that holds us
22:07 back or so much we'd like to do well one
22:09 day we're going to have a completely
22:11 redeemed body
22:13 and of course when he returns we're
22:15 going to see him and we're going to be
22:18 with him and we're going to be like him
22:20 father help us to be faithful in the
22:22 work you've given us to do and we look
22:26 forward to the coming of our Lord Jesus
22:29 and our prayer is even so come quickly
22:31 Lord Jesus
