0:10 3 and the word of the Lord came unto
0:13 Jonah the second time
0:17 saying arise go unto Nineveh that great
0:19 City and preach unto it the preaching
0:21 that I bid
0:24 thee so Jonah arose and went unto
0:27 Nineveh according to the word of the
0:31 Lord now Nineveh was an exceed ing great
0:33 city of 3 days journey that me it took 3
0:35 days to get through
0:38 it and Jonah began to enter into the
0:40 city of days journey and he cried and
0:44 said yetep 40 days and Nineveh shall be
0:46 overthrown so the people of Nineveh
0:48 believed God and proclaimed a fast and
0:51 put on sackcloth from the greatest of
0:54 them even to the least of them for word
0:57 came unto the king of ninev and he arose
0:59 from his throne and laid his robe from
1:02 him him and covered himself with
1:05 sackcloth and sat in
1:07 ashes and he caused it to be proclaimed
1:09 and published throughout Nineveh by the
1:13 decree of the king and his Nobles saying
1:15 let neither man nor Beast herd nor flock
1:18 taste anything let them not feed nor
1:21 drink water but let man and Beast be
1:23 covered with sackcloth and cry mightily
1:27 unto God y let them turn everyone from
1:29 his evil way and from the violence that
1:31 is in their their
1:34 hands who can tell if God will turn and
1:37 repent and turn away from his Fierce
1:39 anger that we perish
1:42 not and God saw their works that they
1:45 turned from their evil way and God
1:47 repented of the evil that he had said
1:52 that he would do unto them and he did it
1:54 not this chapter
1:57 describes probably the greatest missionary
1:58 missionary
2:02 miracle in all of recorded
2:05 history here is a
2:10 city of probably a million people when
2:12 you get to the end of chapter 4 you
2:14 discover there were 120,000 children who
2:16 didn't know their right hand from their left
2:17 left
2:19 hand and you have some older children
2:21 and you have to have some parents and
2:23 some aunts and some uncles and it's a
2:25 possibility we have anywhere from
2:30 650,000 to a million people
2:31 all of
2:35 whom repented and turned from their evil
2:38 way a whole Wicked City
2:41 repented and the Judgment of God was
2:43 averted I say it again this is probably
2:46 the greatest missionary miracle in all
2:48 of recorded history and
2:54 yet and yet the preacher was reluctant to
2:55 to
2:57 preach and he hated the people he was preaching
2:58 preaching
3:01 to we'll find that in chapter
3:05 4 God honored his
3:10 word god worked and a city was
3:12 saved the word of the Lord came to Jonah
3:15 a second time I'm glad that our God is
3:16 the god of the second
3:19 chance now some of the Saints won't give
3:21 you a second chance in fact half of them
3:23 won't even give you a first
3:26 chance Saints are very skeptical of each
3:29 other we have Saint Watchers these days
3:30 who have their binoculars they're
3:32 watching the Saints don't you dare
3:35 stumble you're done
3:37 for Jesus said to Peter we ought to
3:40 forgive each other 70 times
3:42 seven by the time you have forgiven
3:45 somebody 490 times you're pretty well in
3:48 the habit of forgiving aren't you God
3:51 forgave Jonah and God gave Jonah another
3:53 chance because Jonah disobeyed the will
3:57 of God it didn't end Jonah's
3:59 life the will of God is not a machine
4:02 machine that falls apart if one part
4:05 isn't working the will of God is a
4:07 living relationship and if some part of
4:10 that relationship is not right God
4:12 compensates for it until he can make it
4:14 right it's like your body when your
4:16 gallbladder starts hurting and starts
4:19 causing problems the rest of your body
4:21 compensates until you can get that thing
4:24 fixed the will of God is this way I say
4:25 it again the Saints aren't this way
4:27 David said let me not fall into the
4:29 hands of of men let me fall into the
4:31 hands of God greater his mercies and God
4:34 was merciful to Jonah and God gave him another
4:36 another
4:38 chance let's consider the factors that
4:41 are involved in this Mar marvelous
4:44 Miracle of the repentance of an entire
4:46 city we don't see things like this
4:50 happening today we see great Citywide
4:53 meetings but sad to
4:56 say 3 months after the meeting is
4:59 over life is back where it started
5:01 except EX for the people that got saved
5:04 we haven't seen entire cities
5:06 repent what are the factors that are
5:09 involved in this magnificent amazing
5:11 Miracle well there are at least five
5:14 factors that are involved fasten your
5:16 safety belts here we
5:20 go Factor number one a great
5:23 City God says this arise go to Nineveh
5:25 that great City he said the same thing
5:28 back in chapter 1 verse two arise go to
5:30 Nineveh that great City when God looked
5:33 down upon Nineveh he saw a great
5:37 City great in several respects it was a
5:39 great City historically one of the old old
5:41 old
5:44 cities Christian archaeologists are not
5:47 quite sure how old Nineveh was some go
5:51 back 3,000 years some say 4500 years
5:53 suffice it to say that Nineveh was an
5:56 old city Genesis chapter 10 you find
6:04 a great City in history all down through
6:07 the years there had been this city of
6:10 Nineveh the city was not only great in
6:13 history it was great in size and in
6:16 splendor the archaeologists tell us that
6:18 the city of Nineveh with the suburbs the
6:21 other cities that were around it formed
6:24 a 60m radius if you want to if you want
6:26 to go right through Nineveh take you
6:30 three days to get through there
6:32 in one section of it there was a wall 8
6:35 miles in
6:37 circumference and I read somewhere that
6:42 in the walls of Nineveh there were, 1500
6:45 Towers so when Jonah came to Nineveh he
6:48 was coming to a great metropolis a major
6:51 city surrounded by some suburbs and it
6:55 would take 3 days to walk through that
6:59 City great in size and in splendor
7:02 the Lord tells us over in chapter 4: 11
7:07 it was a great City with 120,000 little
7:09 children and much cattle it's
7:10 interesting that God's concerned about
7:13 the animals this city was great in
7:17 power the city of neveh was no small
7:19 power in its day it was the capital of
7:22 the Assyrian Empire it would be as
7:24 though God said to one of his servants
7:29 arise go to Moscow arise go to London
7:33 arise go to Paris arise go to Nineveh
7:35 that city of great power and the
7:39 Assyrian Empire was growing about that
7:42 time which explains why Jonah didn't
7:44 want to go he would have been very happy
7:48 to have all of his enemies destroyed you
7:50 know God asks us to go to people who are
7:53 our friends and our relatives and share
7:55 the gospel with them we don't do
7:58 it God asked him to go to his enemies
8:00 and share the go goel that's a real test
8:05 of Love isn't it the city was great in
8:08 sin I will not um frighten you tonight
8:10 with accounts of what the Assyrians used to
8:11 to
8:13 do you can read about them in the
8:15 encyclopedia they were known for their
8:18 violence in fact the king mentions the
8:22 violence in verse 8 turn every man from
8:25 his evil way and from the violence
8:28 that's in their hands uh later on nahem
8:31 the prophet announced the Doom of
8:33 Nineveh if you want to read the little
8:36 book of nahem and find out all the
8:38 things that the people of Assyria did
8:46 alive used to cut their tongues
8:49 out used to even take little children
8:52 and impale them on stakes and let them
8:55 hang out there in the sun until they
8:58 died they had no mercy they'd bury
9:00 people alive they had no Mercy they were
9:02 known for their violence and their
9:06 wickedness it was a city great in sin
9:09 now if I were God it's a good thing I'm
9:13 not it's good thing you're not if I were
9:15 God I would have said arise and watch me
9:18 wipe Nineveh off the face of the
9:20 Earth Jonah I want you to see what I can
9:23 do I'm sending down one angel that one
9:26 Angel is going to wipe that place clean
9:28 but God didn't do that God's not doing
9:29 that to Chicago why why should he do it to
9:31 to
9:33 Nineveh you know why God didn't do that to
9:35 to
9:37 Nineveh two little verses from the New
9:39 Testament tell us why Jonah could never
9:41 have quoted these verses he didn't know
9:44 them but he knew the truth of
9:48 them God is not willing that any should
9:51 perish but that all should come to
9:54 repentance you see they say in verse 9
9:57 we want God to turn away from his Fierce
10:00 anger that we perish not they were
10:02 perishing and my Bible says God is not
10:05 willing that any should perish God who
10:08 will have all men to be saved God's
10:11 attitude toward
10:13 them was one of great
10:20 kindness chapter 4: 2 Jonah said I knew
10:23 that thou art a gracious
10:25 God and
10:29 merciful slow to anger and of great
10:32 kindness and God looked upon a great
10:35 City and saw it great in history and
10:39 great in size and great in power and
10:42 great in sin and he matched all of that
10:45 greatness with the greatness of his
10:48 grace and his mercy and his kindness a
10:52 great City I wonder what God sees when
10:54 he looks at
10:57 Chicago many many many times I have
11:00 flown over Chicago day light at night
11:03 beautiful at night Chicago is just
11:05 beautiful at night if you come in from
11:08 Michigan over the lake and you fly into
11:12 Chicago that Skyline is I think the most
11:14 beautiful in the United
11:17 States you people from San Francisco can
11:20 argue with me afterward it's gorgeous
11:22 and I've looked down upon the city of
11:24 Chicago and my first response has been
11:25 what a beautiful city and I've said to
11:27 myself what does God see when he looks
11:29 at this city
11:32 does he see great violence and great
11:34 wickedness Jesus looked upon the city and
11:36 and
11:40 wept Jeremiah looked upon the city and
11:43 wept a great city which leads us
11:47 secondly to another factor a great
11:50 concern God was concerned for Nineveh
11:53 now Jonah wasn't concerned don't you kid
11:57 yourself the only reason Jonah went to
12:03 he went against his
12:07 will you see this book begins with
12:11 chapter 1: 2 arise go to Nineveh then
12:14 you read in verse three but Jonah now
12:17 whenever you find a but in the Bible
12:19 you've got a contrast but Jonah in other
12:21 words I'm not going to do what God told
12:24 me to do well if you're going to be but
12:26 Jonah then in verse four of chapter 1
12:27 you've got but the Lord you start
12:29 butting up against the Lord he'll bought
12:30 up against
12:35 you but the Lord sent a storm down Jonah
12:38 went down down down and God spanked
12:40 Jonah God chasen him finally Jonah said
12:44 I quit I quit I will I will I
12:47 will God spoke to the fish and the fish
12:50 vomited him up and God speaks to Jonah
12:52 the second time and in verse three of
12:54 chapter 3 you don't find butt Jonah you
12:57 find Soul Jonah big
13:00 difference if you had a sow Jonah back
13:02 in chapter 1 you wouldn't had to worry
13:04 about chapter
13:06 2 that's a trouble with our lives God
13:13 but God says all right you're going to
13:14 fight me I'll fight back you know God
13:22 him okay I'll fight back and so he did
13:23 then finally we have so Jonah Jonah
13:25 didn't want to go to
13:29 Nineveh Jonah went because he had to
13:31 that's the reason most people do the
13:33 things they do they have
13:37 to well I better read my Bible I don't
13:39 enjoy it but if I don't the roof May cave
13:40 cave
13:43 in oh I better go to church somebody
13:45 will miss me and they'll think I'm a
13:48 hypocrite why do we do what we do you'd
13:50 think Jonah would have said Lord thank
13:52 you for the privilege you've given me of
13:55 taking your message to a people who are
13:58 perishing oh what a privilege to be an
14:00 ambassador for God instead he said I'll
14:03 go I don't want to I've told you the
14:05 story about the little girl who was
14:07 standing up in the front seat of the car
14:10 his father was driving down the
14:12 highway this was before the days of
14:15 safety belts and he said to Honey sit
14:17 down she said
14:20 no he said sit
14:23 down she said
14:26 no he said if you don't sit down I'm
14:27 pulling over to the side of the road and
14:29 you won't be able to sit down
14:34 so plop she sat down and she drove along
14:37 very primly for a while and she said I'm
14:44 inside it's the way the Saints are it's
14:48 the way God's people are I'll
14:50 go we don't sing I'll go where you want
14:54 me to go dear Lord we sing I'll go
14:57 because you're making me go dear
15:00 Lord God was was
15:05 concerned for Nineveh chap 4:1 God knew
15:07 how many children were in Nineveh isn't that
15:09 that
15:11 interesting Mr Moody came home from a
15:14 service one night and his wife said were
15:16 there any decisions he said yes there
15:18 were two and a
15:21 half she said two adults and one child
15:23 he said no two children and one adult
15:26 the fella is half lived his life and
15:28 he's only got the other half left to
15:29 live for God the kids have got a whole
15:31 life to live for the Lord God's
15:34 concerned about the
15:36 children when the mothers and dads
15:38 brought the children to Jesus when he
15:39 was here on Earth the disciples said get
15:41 away get away he's not concerned about
15:43 children Jesus said you permit those
15:46 children to come to me don't you forbid
15:48 them God knew how many children there
15:50 are there God knew how many children
15:52 there were in Nineveh he knew how many
15:54 animals there
15:57 were God's concerned about animal life
15:59 you know why the wickedness of men touches
16:01 touches
16:05 nature we are in a mess today with our
16:12 sin and people to make more money make
16:14 more money are pouring all this glop
16:16 into our
16:18 water make more
16:21 money the land is being ruined and the
16:22 air is being
16:25 ruined the animals are being
16:28 ruined I took a spring walk last night
16:31 little chil I bundled up for
16:33 it and my wife and I just walking around
16:35 the neighborhood it was very quiet and I
16:38 said you know one of these days Rachel
16:41 Carson's prediction may come true A Silent
16:44 Silent
16:47 Spring there may Dawn a spring one day
16:50 when there won't be any life we've
16:54 killed it all God's concerned about the
16:56 animals and God's concerned about the
16:58 men and God's concerned about the children
16:59 children
17:02 God's concern for the
17:05 city evangelicals by and large aren't
17:11 city our churches are escaping the
17:13 cities as fast as they can I know there
17:15 are problems involved I live in the city
17:17 of Chicago my children have gone to
17:19 school in the city of
17:23 Chicago I pay taxes in the city of
17:25 Chicago I know what it's like to live in
17:28 the city I was born in the city I was
17:31 raised raised in the city and with the
17:33 exception of 5 years of my life I lived
17:35 in the
17:40 city i' I suppose I have breathed enough
17:42 pollution to at least give one part of me
17:44 me
17:46 something I'm sure in the I'm sure in
17:48 one week's time here in the city of
17:50 Chicago as I go around visiting Pastor
17:52 filin has the same experience I'm sure I
17:54 must breathe a pack of
17:56 cigarettes just just breathing the air of
17:57 of
18:00 Chicago God God's concerned about the
18:02 city whenever Paul went preaching he
18:03 went preaching in the cities did you
18:06 ever know I that I was reading in the
18:07 book of Acts where he bypassed a couple
18:09 of towns Paul you should go to those
18:10 towns oh no I'm going to go to this big
18:12 city over here they'll reach out to
18:21 cities a great concern I think God's
18:24 still concerned for people don't you I
18:26 think God is still concerned for
18:29 children I was glad to hear what F had
18:33 to say about Ministry among the Indian
18:36 children a great concern now this lead
18:40 us to our third factor a Great
18:43 Commission arise go to Nineveh that
18:44 great City preach unto it the preaching
18:47 that I bid thee and so Jonah arose and
18:48 went and he got there and said man is
18:50 this a big
18:52 place you know the little town he came
18:54 from in Galilee wasn't anything to brag
18:56 about it was just one of those small
19:07 Street Great City now this commission is
19:12 ridiculous look here is one man versus a
19:15 million here is a man without an
19:18 automobile a PA system a flannel graph
19:24 board a track a radio a TV set a
19:27 printing press an airplane a telephone
19:29 not even a mograph machine not even a
19:31 piece of carbon
19:35 paper and one man reluctant as he is
19:44 crazy you if you and I had been in
19:46 Galilee when our Lord was about to
19:48 ascend up to heaven and he looked out
19:50 and here were more than
19:53 500 of his
19:55 followers and he said I'm sending you go
19:59 into all the world preach the gospel
20:05 crazy our missionary friends can do this
20:07 much better than I can wherever you go
20:10 in this world you're going to find
20:12 Coca-Cola I saw Coke bottles and Coke
20:16 signs in in weird places in Africa
20:17 Singer sewing machine is there a place
20:19 in Africa where you don't find Singer
20:20 sewing machine there must be I'm sure
20:22 but it's hard to
20:24 find when my brothers were in the Marine
20:26 Corps and got shipped off to some
20:28 forgotten place not even on the map in
20:30 China here was Standard
20:34 Oil you know how they get
20:36 there F calls in his board and says okay
20:38 man here is an area where we haven't penetrated
20:39 penetrated
20:42 yet get over there and do
20:45 it and they do
20:48 it and we can sell sewing machines and
20:51 oil and soft drinks all over the world
20:54 we can get in we can't get there with the
20:56 the
20:59 gospel it was a rather audacious thing
21:01 it was a rather ridiculous thing a Great
21:04 Commission you one man facing a million
21:07 people how in the world can you do it
21:09 I'm sure that you felt this way I felt
21:11 this way going into highrises you know
21:12 you stand there look at these highrises
21:13 you get
21:16 dizzy how in the world can one person or
21:19 one Church do anything about the six
21:22 million people in this greater Chicago
21:24 area well there were several things that
21:29 were in um Jonah's favor
21:30 several things that were not in his
21:33 favor he was a Jew going to
21:35 Gentiles he was an enemy going into the
21:38 enemy camp he was one man facing a million
21:40 million
21:44 people and um he had a very unpopular
21:46 message if he had gone in and said God
21:49 has said you will defeat the Jews that
21:51 would have made him a hero but his
21:54 message was very unpopular in 40 days
21:56 Nineveh is going to be overthrown people
21:59 don't want to hear that but he had some
22:01 things in his favor you know what they
22:03 were you never want to forget this
22:06 number one God had called
22:08 him God had called
22:11 him when he stood by the walls of
22:14 Nineveh and said I'll never make it God
22:18 said look I have called you when Paul
22:19 found himself in the wicked city of
22:24 Corinth surrounded by all kinds of foul Wicked
22:26 Wicked
22:28 sewage and they began to oppose the
22:32 Apostle Paul and he was ready to
22:34 quit God appeared to him and said Paul
22:37 don't you leave this city I've called
22:39 you here and I'm with you I have many
22:40 people here and Paul stayed for 18
22:42 months and build a
22:46 church I'm sure there are times in our
22:49 lives when we say I can't knock on one
22:51 more door I can't do one more thing
22:54 except for one thing God has called
22:57 me Jonah had the Assurance of the
23:00 calling of God had something
23:07 message now Jonah didn't go in and say I
23:09 think I'll get myself
23:12 elected to the junior Chamber of
23:15 Commerce then I'll start influencing
23:19 people I'll penetrate the structure we
23:21 hear a lot of this today the way to win
23:24 people to Christ is to penetrate the
23:27 structure my Bible says arise and go and
23:29 preach don't you ever minimize the
23:32 preaching of the word of God the
23:33 teaching of the word of God the sharing
23:35 of the
23:38 gospel God not only told him where to go
23:41 but God told him what to do you preach
23:43 the message that I give
23:47 you but he had a third thing in his
23:50 favor he was a walking
23:52 miracle I told you last Sunday evening
23:54 that there's no doubt in my mind that
23:59 Jonah actually died in that great fish
24:01 during those three days and three nights
24:04 he was in the innards of that great fish
24:07 I don't doubt that the gastric juices
24:09 went to work on
24:11 Jonah then Jonah woke up and found
24:13 himself alive and said Lord I'll do it
24:15 I'll do it out he
24:17 came and when he came out he didn't come
24:20 out the way he went
24:23 in he was different he was a walking
24:26 Miracle Nineveh
24:29 worshiped a goddess
24:30 whose image was a
24:32 fish it's
24:34 remarkable and when Jonah came and
24:36 showed up people looked at him and said
24:39 man what has happened to you I was dead
24:40 and now I'm alive they said we can sure
24:44 see that Jonah was a walking
24:48 Miracle God's commission involved a
24:51 mandate you go a message here's what you
24:54 preach and a miracle you
24:57 live in such a way that people will
24:59 notice the difference I think we need
25:04 Chicago a Great
25:06 Commission would you notice a fourth
25:08 Factor as we hurry
25:12 on a great change what happened the
25:16 people of Nineveh verse 5
25:18 believed verse
25:22 n they talked about God repenting and in
25:24 verse 10 God saw that they had repented
25:25 there are actually three
25:28 repentances three repenting in chapter 3
25:31 Jonah repented and Nineveh repented and
25:33 God repented now when God repents God doesn't
25:34 doesn't
25:37 change God does not repent of sin the
25:39 way you and I do the word repent just
25:41 simply means to change your
25:44 mind in the Bible repentance is simply
25:45 changing your mind and the people of
25:48 Nineveh changed their mind they had been
25:49 worshiping a false god now they're going
25:51 to turn to the true God they had been
25:53 full of violence now they turned away
25:55 from their violence they had been guilty
25:57 of sin they turned away from their sin
26:00 they had been ay and proud and arrogant
26:02 now they humbled themselves even the animals
26:05 animals
26:07 repented there's some animals in my
26:15 repent they cried out to
26:17 God you see something happened to their
26:21 emotions fear of judgment in 40 days
26:23 ninev is overthrown and something
26:25 happened to their emotions fear nothing
26:32 Jesus preached about
26:34 judgment in fact Jesus said more about
26:37 judgment than he said about heaven Paul
26:39 preached about judgment and as he
26:41 reasoned of
26:43 righteousness and Temperance and
26:47 judgment to come Felix trembled the
26:49 prophets preached about
26:52 judgment nothing wrong with a Godly
26:55 fear I went to the doctor the other day
26:58 and had my annual autopsy
27:02 and I do this every year for one reason
27:04 I want to stay
27:07 well pain
27:12 hurts sickness hurts and surgery costs
27:15 money fear of sickness sends you to the
27:21 doctor fear of accident sends you to the
27:23 mechanic fear of starving to death send
27:25 you to the
27:29 table nothing wrong with fear
27:30 something happened to their emotions
27:33 they were afraid something happened to
27:35 their minds they said we've been
27:37 thinking wrong all of our thinking has
27:38 been wrong and something happened to
27:42 their will they did something about
27:45 it the Sunday school teacher said to his
27:46 class what is
27:49 repentance a little boy said repentance
27:51 means to be sorry for your sin and a
27:54 little girl spoke up and said please it
27:56 means to be sorry enough to
27:58 quit that's what they did
27:59 they said we're going to quit our
28:02 violence and quit our sin a great change took
28:04 took
28:07 place true repentance is beautifully
28:10 pictured here the King on the throne got
28:13 on the ash Heap he leveled himself he
28:22 sinner and God repented that means that
28:26 God changed not his attitude but his
28:29 actions God's nature never changes God
28:31 can't change for the worse because he's
28:33 holy and God can't change for the better
28:34 because he's
28:37 perfect his nature never changes but
28:40 God's workings with men change I'm glad
28:43 they do Jonah is glad they do God said
28:45 Jonah either you repent or you're going
28:48 to get it and Jonah repented and God
28:50 repented Nineveh either you repent or
28:51 you're going to get it and Nineveh
28:53 repented and God repented you know why
28:55 God repented because he's the kind of a
28:57 God that Jonah talked about in chapter
28:58 4: two
29:03 a gracious God merciful slow to anger of
29:06 great kindness and repentance the of the
29:11 evil God in his grace gives us what we
29:14 don't deserve and God in his Mercy does
29:18 not give us what we do deserve and God
29:22 in his kindness graciously forgives
29:26 us a great
29:28 change I'm going to go one step step
29:30 further and ask you to turn now to Matthew
29:37 12 Matthew 12 there is a fifth factor
29:40 involved we'll touch upon
29:47 condemnation Jesus said
29:51 this Matthew 12:38 then certain of the
29:53 scribes and of the Pharisees answered
29:56 saying teacher we would see a sign from thee
29:58 thee
30:00 but he answered and said unto them an
30:03 evil and adulterous generation seeketh
30:04 after a
30:07 sign and there shall no sign be given to
30:10 it except the sign of the prophet
30:12 Jonah for as
30:15 Jonah was three days and three nights in
30:18 the belly of the great fish so shall the
30:20 son of man be three days and three
30:21 nights in the heart of the earth
30:23 speaking about his death burial and
30:26 Resurrection now verse
30:30 41 the men of Nineveh shall rise in
30:33 judgment with this
30:36 generation and shall condemn
30:42 it wait a minute you mean those Pagan
30:46 Heathen Assyrians are going to judge and
30:49 condemn the Pharisees and the scribes
30:52 with their Scrolls of the law and
30:54 they're tithing and they're washing and
30:58 they're praying yes
31:01 and not only that generation but this
31:03 generation I want you to know that the
31:05 people of the city of Chicago are facing
31:06 a great
31:09 condemnation by the people of Nineveh
31:11 let's finish the verse the men of
31:14 Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this
31:16 generation and shall condemn it because
31:19 they repented at the preaching of Jonah
31:23 and behold a greater than Jonah is here
31:26 Jesus talks about three greaters in this chapter
31:28 chapter
31:31 talks about a greater than Solomon and a
31:33 greater than Jonah and a greater than
31:36 the temple back in verse 6 he's greater
31:39 than the temple he's the
31:42 priest verse 41 he's greater than Jonah
31:44 he's the prophet verse 42 he's greater
31:47 than Solomon he's the king he's greater
31:49 what's he saying he's saying if the
31:52 people of Nineveh repented at the
31:56 preaching of Jonah how much more will
31:59 this generation be damned that did not
32:01 repent at my
32:03 preaching greater than
32:06 Jonah now Jesus is greater than Jonah
32:08 greater in his person he's the very
32:11 perfect Son of God Jonah wasn't perfect
32:13 if the ninevites repented at the
32:16 preaching of a rebellious reluctant
32:19 Prophet how much more should you repent
32:22 at the preaching of the perfect holy
32:24 spotless Son of God greater in his
32:27 person greater in his love Jonah didn't
32:29 love the people he preached to Jonah
32:32 chapter 4 we find him sitting outside
32:36 sulking watching to see if God's going
32:38 to blow the city up and hoping that he
32:41 will Jesus looked upon the city and wept
32:44 greater in his love greater in his
32:48 message Jonah came preaching judgment 40
32:49 days and Nineveh is going to be a stack of
32:50 of
32:54 Ashes Jesus didn't preach that for God
32:55 sent not his son into the world to
32:57 condemn the world but that the world
32:59 through him might be saved he came
33:01 preaching a message of Grace and
33:10 greater Jonah said uh throw me out of
33:12 the ship and kill me and they'll be
33:14 they'll be
33:17 calm he made a sacrifice to bring
33:20 calm Jesus made a greater sacrifice to
33:24 bring peace he died on a cross and bore
33:27 on his body my sin and the sin of the
33:29 whole world Jonah died for his own sin
33:32 Jesus died for our sins therefore the
33:34 judgment is
33:36 greater Jonah just preached to a million
33:39 people he had a message for one city
33:41 Jesus has a message for the whole world
33:43 too bad the whole world can't hear
33:48 it all Jonah offered to them was a stay of
33:49 of
33:51 judgment this doesn't mean that the
33:54 whole city was saved in the Evangelical
33:57 sense he just offered stay of judgment
33:59 Jesus Jesus in his message offers
34:03 abundant life eternal life today and
34:06 forever and so I say there is a great
34:08 condemnation because Jesus is greater
34:12 than Jonah and Nineveh condemns us
34:18 today Nineveh heard one preacher one
34:22 preacher and repented Chicago has heard
34:26 everybody and still won't
34:28 repent you can punch punch your radio on
34:30 any time of the day and hear somebody
34:31 preaching the gospel you can walk into a
34:33 bus station you find the gospel you walk
34:36 into a Walgreens drugstore there's a
34:39 Bible here's a city that heard one
34:41 preacher preach one sermon no
34:49 repented by the way how many preachers
34:52 have you heard have you repented
34:55 yet Neva heard a message of judgment and
34:57 repented and yet we're preaching a
35:00 message message of Grace and love and
35:03 forgiveness Nineveh had no evidence that
35:05 what Jonah was saying was true they said
35:08 it may be if possible God will repent
35:11 and God will change his mind we can give
35:13 to any Lost Sinner absolute assurance
35:15 that if he trusts he'll be saved they
35:16 had no
35:26 be there's a great condemnation
35:29 here these people had 40 days in which to
35:30 to
35:34 repent but they didn't wait 40 days when
35:37 they heard that message it began to
35:40 spread from mouth to mouth in the orient
35:42 things spread quickly and before you
35:45 know it the whole city the King on his
35:47 throne the slave in the street was
35:50 bowing before God in Repentance they
35:52 didn't wait 40 days how many days have
35:54 you got before judgment's
35:58 coming you don't know
36:03 clue somebody could walk out of this
36:05 church tonight and be gone you don't
36:08 know you don't know they
36:12 knew and didn't
36:17 wait do you know that uh lost sinners in
36:19 the city of Chicago who have heard the
36:21 gospel and they've been witnessed to and
36:23 they've been prayed for are going to
36:26 face a greater condemnation than some of
36:28 these people we hear about in South
36:32 Africa or Central African Empire or
36:35 Ethiopia who perhaps have never seen and never
36:36 never
36:40 heard if there are such
36:42 persons as I leave through the Himel
36:45 week by week and Pastor den and I pick
36:47 out some of the songs it's interesting
36:50 to see how many of these old missionary
36:53 hymns talk about the Heathen Nations you
36:57 ever notice that the Heathen Nations I'm
36:59 living in a heathen
37:02 Nation America today is a heathen Nation
37:04 we may have in God we trust and our
37:08 currency that's as far as it
37:10 goes there is going to be more judgment
37:13 on the Sinners of Chicago because they
37:17 have seen a flood of light there's a great
37:21 condemnation now the story doesn't end
37:23 there God is more concerned about the
37:25 worker than he is the
37:27 work and so next week the Lord Lord
37:30 willing we're going to look at chapter
37:35 4 and see how God had to save his own
37:38 preacher and deal with him now is God
37:41 dealing with you tonight God has dealt with
37:42 with
37:45 me in the preaching of these missionary
37:47 messages God has dealt with
37:50 me God says there's a great City all
37:53 over this world there are great cities
37:55 that need the gospel there's small
37:58 places that need the gospel too There's
38:00 a Great Commission let's go there's a
38:03 great concern God is burdened to see
38:07 people one there can be a great
38:09 change and if there isn't there's a great
38:10 great
38:12 condemnation where are you in the
38:14 picture God has written each of us
38:17 somewhere into the script where are
38:19 we you say well I've never been saved
38:21 then come and give your heart to Christ
38:22 you say well I am saved but I'm not
38:24 dedicated to the Lord I don't really
38:26 care about lost souls then get it
38:28 straightened out you say I'm trying to
38:30 serve the Lord and I'm fighting a battle
38:32 that's all right God's given you his
38:35 mandate and his message and his Miracle
38:38 go right ahead preach the word share
38:41 it and God will do the
38:44 rest Heavenly Father we would not be
38:46 reluctant Witnesses like
38:49 Jonah yet even in his
38:52 reluctance you did something great oh
38:55 how much you can do in the power of your
38:57 spirit and your word
38:59 I pray father for the one who needs to
39:01 be saved tonight you'll speak to that
39:05 heart for The Reluctant rebellious
39:07 Christian who needs to be yielded you'll
39:09 speak to that heart speak to us as a
39:13 church family surrounded by a great City
39:17 that needs the gospel I ask in Jesus
