0:06 the tourism industry has the power to do
0:10 a lot of good in fact it has the power
0:13 to change the world it can help to bring
0:15 people out of poverty to put food on the
0:17 table and to pay the medical bills it
0:19 can help to preserve ancient cultures
0:21 maintain religious buildings and
0:23 Revitalize culture and art it can help
0:26 to support and strengthen communities
0:28 but the travel and tourism industry can
0:30 also cause a lot of harm it can cause
0:32 people to stop speaking their native
0:34 language to alter the way that they
0:36 dress to destroy culture and Heritage
0:38 and to encourage people to turn to Crime
0:41 gambling and drugs these are the social
0:43 impacts of Tourism if you've ever
0:46 studied sustainable tourism management
0:48 you will know that it consists of three
0:51 pillars the environment the economy and
0:53 Society in order to ensure that we have
0:56 a longlasting and sustainable tourism
0:58 industry throughout the world we must
1:01 ensure that we min minimize the negative
1:03 impacts of Tourism and maximize the
1:05 positive impacts of Tourism my name is
1:07 Dr Haley stainton from tourism teer.com
1:10 and today I'm going to teach you all
1:12 about the social impacts of Tourism and
1:13 if you do want to learn a little bit
1:15 more about the social impacts of Tourism
1:17 I have provided a recommended reading
1:19 list down in the description below the
1:21 social impacts of Tourism also commonly
1:24 referred to as sociocultural impacts are
1:26 the effects on host communities that
1:29 have direct or indirect relations and
1:31 interrelations with tourists and the
1:33 tourism industry in other words it's the
1:36 way that the business of Tourism impacts
1:38 Society tourism is at its core an
1:41 interactive service this means that host
1:43 guest interaction is inevitable this can
1:45 have significant social or social
1:48 cultural impacts these social impacts
1:51 can be seen as benefits or costs so they
1:54 can be good social impacts or bad social
1:56 impacts travel and tourism can do some
1:58 great things around the world and it can
2:00 have really positive
2:02 social impacts so let's start off this
2:04 video by looking at the good things that
2:06 can come from tourism one of the biggest
2:08 social benefits of Tourism is the
2:11 preservation of local culture it is the
2:12 local culture that the tourists are
2:14 often coming to visit when they travel
2:16 tourists visit Beijing to learn more
2:18 about the Chinese dynasties tourists
2:20 visit Thailand to taste authentic Thai
2:22 food tourists travel to Brazil to go to
2:25 the Rio Carnival just to mention a few
2:27 as a result many destinations will make
2:29 a special effort to preserve and protect
2:31 the local culture this often contributes
2:33 to the conservation and sustainable
2:35 management of Natural Resources
2:37 protection of local Heritage and a
2:39 Renaissance of indigenous cultures
2:42 Cultural Arts and Crafts in one way this
2:45 is absolutely great but I can't help
2:48 wondering is it natural our social
2:50 settings have changed tremendously over
2:52 the years in the UK we don't walk around
2:54 in corsets and Victorian dresses anymore
2:56 do we we have evolved socially over the
2:58 years and this is completely natural so
3:00 I can't help but Wonder
3:02 is it right that destinations stay in
3:04 one place for tourism they don't evolve
3:06 they don't change like the rest of us I
3:07 don't have the answer but it's something
3:10 for you to ponder on anyway I digress
3:11 another positive social impact of
3:13 Tourism is the ability for the travel
3:16 industry to help strengthen communities
3:18 events and festivals of which local
3:19 residents have been the primary
3:21 participants and Spectators are often
3:23 rejuvenated and developed in response to
3:25 tourist interest I certainly felt this
3:26 myself when I went to the running of the
3:30 balls Festival known as San fmin in pamp
3:32 Bain the atmosphere there was just
3:34 explosive it was an incredible
3:36 experience and the jobs created by
3:38 tourism can also be a great boost for
3:40 the local community aside from the
3:42 positive economic impacts created by
3:44 enhanced employment prospects people
3:46 with jobs are happier and more social
3:48 than those without a disposable income
3:50 local people can also increase their
3:52 influence on tourism development tourism
3:54 can help to increase their prospects in
3:55 terms of their job and how much they
3:57 might earn and it can help them to
3:58 undertake professional training and
4:00 development of business and
4:01 organizational skills the tourism
4:04 industry requires many facilities and
4:05 infrastructure to meet the needs of the
4:07 tourist this often means that the
4:08 developments in an area as a result of
4:10 Tourism will be available for use by the
4:13 locals too local people often gain the
4:15 use of New Roads new sewage systems new
4:18 playgrounds bus services and lots more
4:20 all as a result of Tourism and this can
4:23 only be a good thing right this can
4:24 provide a great boost to their quality
4:26 of life and is a great example of a
4:28 positive social impact of Tourism
4:30 tourism can see right rise to many
4:32 commercial businesses which can be a
4:34 positive social impact of Tourism this
4:36 helps to enhance the community Spirit as
4:38 people tend to have more disposable
4:40 income as a result these businesses May
4:42 promote the local culture and arts
4:44 whether it's a museum exhibiting
4:46 artifacts from throughout Egyptian
4:48 history a traditional dance show in
4:50 Thailand or an art gallery in New York
4:52 attractions such as these are popular
4:55 with tourists and they help to promote
4:57 and profit from the culture and art that
4:59 the destination has to offer and some
5:00 destinations will encourage local
5:02 cultures and arts to be revitalized or
5:04 reborn today there are some fantastic
5:06 virtual tours that allow tourists to
5:08 time travel in order to see how ancient
5:10 monuments would have once looked there
5:12 are destinations that will put on shows
5:14 to demonstrate ancient practices and
5:16 traditions that may s have died out and
5:18 been forgotten about this type of
5:20 Tourism is great because it helps to
5:23 promote traditions and histories that
5:24 may otherwise have become distant and
5:26 lost many tourists will visit a
5:29 destination especially to see its local
5:31 heritage it is for this reason that many
5:33 destinations will make every effort to
5:35 preserve its Heritage this could include
5:37 putting restrictions in place or
5:39 limiting tourist numbers if necessary
5:41 this is a great example of careful
5:43 tourism planning and sustainable tourism
5:45 management but unfortunately there are
5:48 also a lot of negative social impacts of
5:50 Tourism and it's really really important
5:52 that we take note of these and try to
5:54 mitigate these where we can whilst some
5:56 people will argue that social change is
5:58 inevitable and natural there is no
6:00 disputing that travel and tourism has
6:02 helped to fuel this in many parts of the
6:04 world and unfortunately there are many
6:06 changes that come about as a result of
6:08 Tourism that are not desirable there are
6:10 many examples throughout the world where
6:12 local populations have changed because
6:14 of Tourism African tribal people have
6:16 exchanged their traditional dress for
6:18 football shirts almost everyone on the
6:20 island of barley now speaks English
6:22 there are people in Jamaica who choose
6:24 to make a living by stealing from the
6:26 tourists these are all examples of
6:28 negative social impacts of Tourism let's
6:30 start off by looking at the issue of
6:32 globalization globalization is the way
6:33 in which the world is becoming
6:36 increasingly interconnected we are
6:38 losing our individuality and gaining a
6:40 sense of global being whereby we as
6:42 people are becoming more and more alike
6:44 than ever before globalization is
6:46 inevitable in the tourism industry
6:47 because of the interaction between
6:50 tourists and hosts which typically come
6:52 from different geographical and cultural
6:54 backgrounds it is this interaction that
6:56 encourages us to become more alike let
6:58 me give you a couple of examples that I
6:59 have experienced personally as a few
7:01 years ago I went on a trip to the Goen
7:03 jungle as part of this trip we were
7:04 given a tour of a local village where
7:06 many of the tourists offered candy to
7:08 the local children these children had
7:10 rarely been exposed to areas outside of
7:12 the Jungle and had it not been for the
7:13 tourists they would never have been
7:15 exposed to these Suites that were
7:18 absolutely not Goen or Indian I'll give
7:20 you another example when I went to The
7:22 Gambia a few years back I met a young
7:23 boy who was working with the tourists he
7:25 was wearing a Manchester United football
7:27 shirt and I asked him where did you get
7:29 the shirt from he told me he was donated
7:30 that to you t-shirt from a tourist the
7:32 year before so had that tourist had
7:34 never visited Gambia he would never have
7:36 had that football shirt and in Thailand
7:37 one of my favorite countries of the
7:40 world people are uprooting and leaving
7:41 their traditional homes in the
7:43 countryside to go and work in the cities
7:45 they want to work with the tourists
7:46 that's where the money's at they learn
7:47 to speak English they start eating
7:50 Western food and their culture changes
7:52 as a result had these people never have
7:53 relocated to the city to work with the
7:55 tourists they may never have been
7:57 exposed to some of the foods and some of
7:59 the language and some of the behavior
8:00 that they are many people believe
8:03 globalization to be a bad thing but
8:05 there are also some positives think
8:07 about this do you want an authentic
8:10 squat toilet in your hotel room or do
8:12 you want a western toilet are you happy
8:14 to eat rice and Curry for breakfast or
8:15 would you really just prefer your bowl
8:17 of corn flakes do you want to struggle
8:19 to get by when nobody can communicate in
8:21 English or are you just desperate to
8:23 have just that one English-speaking
8:25 person to help you along the way when we
8:27 travel most tourists want that sense of
8:29 familiar to some extent and globalizing
8:31 ation helps us along the way
8:33 authenticity is essentially something
8:36 that is original or unchanged it's not
8:38 fake it's not reproduced in any way in
8:39 the Western World many people believe
8:41 that a tourist destination is no longer
8:43 authentic when their cultural values and
8:46 traditions change but I would argue is
8:48 this not natural are we not supposed to
8:50 evolve and change take a look at the
8:51 likes of the long neck tribe in Thailand
8:54 or the Massi tribe in Africa these are
8:55 two examples of cultures which have
8:58 remained unchanged for the sole purpose
8:59 of Tourism they appear not not to have
9:01 changed in the way that they dress the
9:03 way that they speak or the way that they
9:05 act for Generations all for the purposes
9:07 of Tourism to me however this begs the
9:11 question is this actually authentic in
9:13 fact is this not the exact opposite of
9:15 authentic the rest of the world have
9:18 modern electricity and iPhones they
9:20 watch TV they buy their clothes in the
9:21 nearest shopping mall but because
9:24 tourists want an authentic experience in
9:26 inverted commas these people have not
9:28 moved on with the rest of the world but
9:29 instead have remained the same I also
9:31 think there is an ethical discussion to
9:33 be had here but we can leave that for
9:35 another day in fact I think authenticity
9:38 is a great topic to study and it can
9:39 really get your mind working and it can
9:42 be quite mindboggling so I have written
9:43 a couple of articles on authenticity and
9:45 I'll put the links down below for you
9:48 many destinations risk standardization
9:50 in the process of satisfying tourists
9:53 desires for familiar facilities and
9:54 experiences whilst landscape
9:58 accommodation food drinks Etc must meet
10:00 the tourist's desire for the new and the
10:02 unfamiliar they must at the same time
10:04 not be too strange because few tourists
10:06 are actually looking for completely new
10:08 experiences just like that toilet
10:10 example that I told you before do you
10:12 really want to squat in your toilet in
10:14 your hotel room tourists are often on
10:16 the lookout for recognizable facilities
10:18 in an unfamiliar environment like
10:20 well-known fast food restaurants and
10:22 hotel chains tourists like some things
10:24 to be standardized like the toilet their
10:27 breakfast speaking English but they want
10:29 other things to be different we like to
10:30 try to different food we like different
10:32 weather we like to listen to different
10:33 music visit different tourist
10:35 attractions but do we want everything to
10:38 become standardized I know I certainly
10:40 miss seeing the small independent shops
10:41 on the High Street they've all be in
10:43 exchange for multinational corporations
10:45 and chains I personally think the
10:47 tourism industry stakeholders need to
10:49 proceed with caution when it comes to
10:51 standardization sure give the tourists
10:53 that sense of familiar that they're
10:55 looking for but don't dilute the culture
10:56 and traditions of the destination that
10:58 they're coming to visit because if it
11:02 feels too much like home well they might
11:04 just stay home on a less philosophical
11:06 note another negative social impact of
11:08 Tourism that can have significant
11:10 consequences are culture clashes because
11:12 tourism involves the movement of people
11:14 from different geographical locations
11:16 cultural clashes can take place as a
11:18 result of differences in culture ethnic
11:21 and religious groups values Lifestyles
11:24 languages and levels of prosperity the
11:26 attitude of local residents towards
11:28 tourism development May unfold through
11:30 the stages of Euphoria where visitors
11:33 are welcome through apathy irritation
11:35 and potentially antagonism when
11:37 anti-tourist attitudes begin to grow
11:39 among local people this is represented
11:41 through doxy's irritation index and this
11:43 is a theory that I will teach you more
11:45 about in a future video culture clashes
11:47 can also be exasperated by the
11:49 fundamental differences in culture
11:51 between the hosts and the tourists
11:53 there's likely to be economic inequality
11:54 between locals and tourists who are
11:56 spending more money than they usually
11:58 would at home this can cause resentment
11:59 from the local population toward towards
12:01 the tourists and when locals see
12:03 tourists wearing expensive jewelry or
12:04 using fancy cameras that they know they
12:06 can't afford themselves this can cause
12:09 resentment and even lead to increases in
12:11 crime further to this tourists often out
12:14 of ignorance or carelessness fail to
12:16 respect local Customs morals and values
12:18 think about it is it right to go topless
12:20 on a beach when the local population
12:22 don't even show their shoulders there
12:23 are many examples of ways that tourists
12:25 offend the local population often
12:27 unintentionally did you know that you
12:29 should never put your back to a or show
12:31 the soul of your feet to a Thai person
12:33 or show romantic affection in public in
12:35 the Middle East a little education in
12:37 this regard can go a long way but
12:39 unfortunately many Travelers are
12:42 completely unaware of the social impacts
12:43 that their actions might have on the
12:45 host Community crime rates typically
12:46 increase with the growth and
12:48 urbanization of an area and the growth
12:51 of mass tourism is often accompanied by
12:52 increases in crime the presence of a
12:54 large number of tourists with lots of
12:57 money to spend who often carry valuables
12:58 such as cameras and jewelry increases
13:00 the attention for criminals and it
13:02 brings with it activities like robbery
13:03 and drug dealing and then there's sex
13:05 tourism although tourism is not the
13:08 cause of sexual exploitation it provides
13:10 easy access to it through for example
13:12 prostitution therefore tourism can
13:14 contribute to rises in the number of sex
13:16 workers in a given area I've seen this
13:18 myself in places such as Thailand and
13:21 The Gambia and lastly gambling is a
13:23 common occurrence as a result of Tourism
13:25 the growth of casinos and other gambling
13:26 facilities can encourage not only
13:29 tourists to part with their cash but
13:31 also the local population too so as I
13:33 have explained throughout this video
13:35 there are many social impacts of Tourism
13:37 some are good some are not so good
13:39 whether you're a student an average
13:40 traveler or somebody who works in the
13:42 travel and tourism industry I hope that
13:44 this video has helped you to think a
13:45 little bit more about how your actions
13:47 might have an impact on the host
13:49 community that you are visiting I also
13:51 hope I've encouraged some deeper or or
13:53 more critical thinking in terms of
13:56 issues such as globalization and
13:57 authenticity and if you are Keen to
13:59 learn more about these things I will be
14:01 posting weekly videos so make sure you
14:02 subscribe to my channel and hit the
14:04 notification button and don't forget to
14:06 check out the reading list that I put
