0:05 this kitchen Flores had it it's got to
0:07 go as a matter of fact this whole
0:09 kitchen needs to be redone from the
0:11 ground up so this is where we're gonna
0:13 start today we're gonna be installing a
0:15 new kitchen floor and it's a simple
0:17 do-it-yourself project and what's great
0:18 about it we're gonna be able to install
0:20 the new and right over the top of this
0:22 old one so that's really gonna save us a
0:24 lot of time you'll need to move your
0:26 appliances out of the kitchen before you
0:27 can lay down your floor
0:30 so when plug them first and remember if
0:31 you have an automatic icemaker you'll
0:33 need to turn the water off you'll need
0:35 to use the wrench to disconnect your
0:36 water lines and in this case I'm using a
0:40 crescent wrench and an open end so
0:42 probably just a few turns not to get it
0:45 I think you can loosen the rest with
0:46 your fingers
0:49 you'll also need to remove your stove
0:51 and in this case we have a gas stove so
0:52 the first thing that you want to do is
0:54 turn the gas off most valves are a 90
0:56 degree turn to shut them off then you
0:58 need to use a pair of channel locks to
1:00 loosen this so you can disconnect the
1:05 line and just keep turning it so you can
1:07 get it really loose to pull this off
1:12 just like that if you're putting down a
1:14 new flooring on top of the old you'll
1:16 need to clean your floor first and I
1:17 just used a really good detergent and
1:19 some water to clean up this floor and
1:21 then if you have any loose tiles that
1:22 are sticking up like this one you'll
1:24 need to glue these back down so I'm
1:26 using a trowel to put on this vinyl
1:29 flooring adhesive just put a little bit
1:30 on the back of this and then you can use
1:33 your fingers just to tamp this down the
1:34 last thing that we need to do before we
1:35 can put down our flooring is take up
1:38 this cord around I'm using a pry bar and
1:40 hammer so if you'll just put your pry
1:42 bar right in between the baseboard and
1:45 the cord around close to the nail and
1:47 lightly tap it with your hand with a
1:47 Miss and
1:50 then you can get it off just carefully
1:52 work your pry bar to loosen this coat
1:55 around so you don't break it and you
1:58 just do this all the way down to make
2:00 our job really easy we're using a
2:02 flooring installation kit this is a real
2:04 inexpensive kit that comes with several
2:06 large pieces of paper and all the tools
2:08 that you need to make a template of your
2:10 floor so you'll want to start with your
2:13 first piece in the corner and push it
2:15 right up against your baseboards and
2:18 then go ahead and roll it out you'll
2:21 need to tack this piece of paper with a
2:22 piece of tape from the baseboard to keep
2:24 it in place seeing away all your other
2:30 pieces out as well and what's really
2:33 nice about using the paper is it's going
2:34 to give you a perfect template of your
2:37 floor and that way you're not taking a
2:38 chance of miss measuring and cutting
2:41 your floor out possibly too short
2:43 so you'll overlap your pieces of paper
2:45 just a little bit and then tape them
2:50 together as you go and to keep your ends
2:51 from rolling up on you go ahead and tape
2:58 these together to every kitchens going
2:59 to have corners and angles that you need
3:02 to cut around like this one so all you
3:04 need to do is just lay your panel right
3:06 up against it I'm going to use a putty
3:07 knife and a utility knife to trim this
3:12 off the reason for the putty knife it's
3:14 given me a straight edge so that my
3:17 utility knife doesn't slip back onto the
3:26 paper and mess this cut up after I
3:27 trimmed all the excess paper off I went
3:29 ahead and reinforced my tape with longer
3:31 pieces to ensure that my patience will
3:34 stay together and now I need to do is
3:36 just take off these two pieces of tape
3:39 on this baseboard let's start rolling
3:46 and this would it be real careful so
3:48 that your papers don't separate and your
3:54 this is our vinyl flooring and it comes
3:56 in standard 12 foot widths but you can
3:59 get it cut to different lengths we went
4:01 ahead and rolled this out 24 hours ago
4:03 that gives it plenty of time to flatten
4:05 out and it gets rid of any kinks so that
4:07 when we cut it we have a good accurate
4:14 cut it down in a corner and then go
4:20 ahead and roll it on out now once we get
4:23 this lined up really even on both of
4:25 these corners I'm going to use some
4:30 sturdy duct tape to tape this down so
4:33 just put your tape on the paper and then
4:35 tuck it under on the floor like that and
4:37 we're going to do this all the way
4:41 around if you'll use a thin piece of
4:43 wood underneath the vinyl that'll make
4:45 your cutting a lot easier plus it
4:47 protects whatever surface your flooring
4:49 is laying on and again I'm just using
4:53 the same utility knife and just go slow
4:54 so that you can get a good straight
5:03 accurate cut as you're cutting be sure
5:05 that you keep your body off of your
5:07 template and stay on the vinyl that way
5:10 you're not messing up your template and
5:17 now that our florist cut all we have to
5:19 do now is just cut the rest of the
5:23 pieces of tape then we're finished now I
5:26 got to do is to take this template off [Applause]
5:36 now let's lay this floor out let's see
5:38 how it fits let me just push it up
5:46 underneath the counter you know because
5:48 of that template this is a perfect fit
5:53 even in the corners since we know this
5:54 floor fits we can go ahead and start
5:56 putting down the glue what you want to
5:58 do is you want to fold this back about
6:01 halfway and be sure not to step on this
6:02 because you don't want to put a crease
6:05 in it and then we're applying this
6:09 adhesive directly to the floor and I'm
6:12 using this notched trowel so this is
6:15 gonna spread the glue on evenly for me
6:19 so let me just get me some you want to
6:21 keep the trowel up on its edge like this
6:28 to spread the game around make sure that
6:30 you get right up against your baseboards
6:32 so that your flooring in here's to that
6:36 and then just do even strokes so that
6:45 I'm just about got this half of the
6:57 okay now we can lay this down once you
6:59 get your flooring down that's pretty
7:01 much it you shouldn't need to raise it
7:03 up for any reason but really you can
7:05 anyway because if you do it will miss
7:08 your flooring up so just try to lay it
7:13 down as smooth as you can and then you
7:14 can smooth it like this all the way up
7:20 before we glue this side of the floor
7:23 I'm just going to lightly loosen with my
7:26 hammer this carpet trim and I'm not I'm
7:28 not trying to take it all the way up I'm
7:30 just raising it enough so that once I
7:33 get this glued I can put the vinyl
7:35 flooring right up underneath here to
7:37 tuck it in and then I'll push this
7:46 carpet trim back down and this wasn't
7:49 too bad now I can lay the rest of this
8:00 to put the flooring under the carpet
8:02 trim that I was telling you about you'll
8:05 want to carefully roll this flooring
8:09 forward a little bit so that you can
8:16 slide it up underneath the trim just
8:20 like that and then you can let the
8:21 weight of the floor push itself on up
8:26 under underneath that trim you'll want
8:28 to lightly tap your carpet trim back
8:33 down now we need to let the floor set up
8:36 for at least 24 hours before we can put
8:41 our appliances back in and the last part
8:43 of our project is just putting back down
8:47 the quarter round you know this really
8:50 was a simple do-it-yourself project and
8:51 it wasn't very expensive
8:53 you could spend anywhere from $2 to
8:55 square foot on up depending on the look
8:58 you want and a project like this can
8:59 really brighten up your kitchen [Music]
