A reading from the book of Isaiah.
Here is my servant whom I uphold, my
chosen in whom my soul delights. I have
put my spirit upon him. He will bring
forth justice to the nations. He will
not cry or lift up his voice or make it
heard in the street. A bruised reed he
will not break and a dimly burning wick
he will not quench. He will faithfully
bring forth justice. He will not grow
faint or be crushed until he has
established justice in the earth and the
coastlands wait for his teaching.
Thus says God, the Lord, who created the
heavens and stretched them out, who
spread out the earth and what comes from
it, who gives breath to the people upon
it and spirit to those who walk in it. I
am the Lord. I have called you in
righteousness. I have taken you by the
hand and kept you. I have given you as a
covenant to the people, a light to the
nations, to open the eyes that are
blind, to bring out the prisoners from
the dungeon, from the prison those who
sit in darkness.
I am the Lord, that is my name. My glory

Peter began to speak to them.
I truly understand that God shows no partiality,
partiality,
but in every nation, anyone who fears
him and does what is right is acceptable
to him.
You know the message he sent to the
people of Israel, preaching peace by
Jesus Christ. He is Lord of all.
That message spread throughout Judea,
beginning in Galilee after the baptism
that John announced. How God anointed
Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit
and with power. How he went about doing
good and healing all who were oppressed
by the devil. For God was with him.
We are witnesses to all that he did both
in Judea and in Jerusalem.
They put him to death by hanging him on
a tree. But God raised him on the third
day and allowed him to appear not to all
the people but to us who were chosen by God
God
as witnesses
and who ate and drank with him after he
rose from the dead.
He commanded us to preach to the people
and to testify that he is the one
ordained by God as judge of the living
and the dead.
All the prophets testify about him that
everyone who believes in him receives
forgiveness of sins through his name.

But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so
now, for it is proper for us in this way
to fulfill all righteousness."
Then he consented. And when Jesus had
been baptized, just as he came up from
the water, suddenly the heavens were
opened to him, and he saw the spirit of
God descending like a dove and a
lighting on him. And a voice from heaven
said, "This is my son, the beloved, with
whom I am well pleased."

Good morning everyone.
>> This is the Sunday in the lurggical year
when we consider the baptism of Jesus by
our patron saint John the Baptist at the
Jordan River.
I grew up witnessing two uh versions of baptism.
baptism.
One was the kind that was presided over
by my very strict uh Church of Christ
minister grandfather on my dad's side.
Art Oir was an exLA cop who became a
pastor after he retired from the LAPD.
After 20 years of preaching up and down
the West Coast, he eventually settled in
the Nevada desert where he pastored a
small church. He performed baptisms
outside mostly in lakes and reservoirs
in the Sierra Neadas. They were full
immersion baptisms and very serious affairs.
affairs.
The best visual I can give you of my
grandfather uh he was digging fence post
holes with a manual post hole digger
well into his 70s.
Uh he didn't eat locusts and wild honey,
but you could imagine him doing that. I
spent many summers with them and I I
witnessed dozens of these baptisms.
There were the baptisms of the
evangelical tradition I was raised in by
my parents. These were also full
immersion baptisms with higher
production values. There were there was
often a large baptismal tank behind the
choir, sometimes behind sliding doors
that would open during the baptism. The
front panel uh was often made of glass
so you could see into the tank. And the
church I was baptized in at 10, it
actually had a camera inside the tank
and it broadcast the underwater view of
the baptism.
Uh, I'll always remember that that
minister, he he wore a full suit and tie
in the tank.
And I I think he wouldn't have lasted
one round with my grandfather.
Both kinds of baptism, uh, they were
highly individual affairs. In the
evangelical church I grew up in, baptism
meant washing your sins away and making
you ready for the salvation of Jesus.
There was a very clear hierarchy between
the pastor and the lay person being
baptized. The pastor was worthy and
righteous. The person being baptized was
looking to be righteous.
I was very happy to become part of our
Episcopal tradition. We more or less
teach baptism is the beginning of a
lifong journey of formation in the
Christian life.
Uh we also consider it an initiation
into our community of believers
and there's a felt truth to these ideas.
Uh the idea that baptism means we've
joined a Christian community and become
disciples of Jesus together. It's partly
why we do our renewal of baptismal vows
several times a year. Just as an aside,
this is a time when we sometimes do the
renewal of baptism vows. We've done them
a lot lately and uh we don't have an
actual baptism and uh I want to keep
that a little more sacred. So, we won't
be doing our baptismal vows today.
However, this doesn't seem to be what's
modeled in Matthew's version of the
baptism of our Lord. We read it in this
very thin slice of the lectionary. It
seems very short indeed. If we go back a
few verses, we're reminded that we're
still in the middle of that passage we
started before Christmas. You may
remember this. John was baptizing all
the crowds from Jerusalem and Judea, all
along the Jordan, including the
Pharisees and the Sadducees. It's that
passage where I suggested John the
Baptist is heartbroken by the hypocrisy
of the religious elite.
So the way our our lectionary chops up
the passage, we might think it's just
Jesus and John standing there in the
river, it's not.
It's in the middle of this teeming and
hypocritical and beloved humanity.
That's where John sees Jesus.
The first thing he says is, "I need to
be baptized by you and you come to me."
John's asking a question many of us ask
when we read about the baptism of our
Lord. Why does Jesus
need to be baptized?
I think that's a more interesting
question than why we need to be
baptized. We've been trying to answer
that for hundreds of years.
So, let's think for a moment what John
the Baptist is going through in this
passage. She's standing there in a
crowded river doing one baptism after
another. There's probably a line of
people several dozen deep.
And who steps up
but Jesus.
Probably dressed like everyone else,
dirty from his travels, maybe talking
small talk to the people around him.
It's not that he's just Jesus, but he's
Jesus among everyone else standing in line.
line.
Jesus isn't showing up to be baptized
because he needs it, but because he is
standing in solidarity with everyone
else there.
Everyone who considers themselves to be sinners.
sinners.
Standing in the crowded river, Jesus is
leveling the playing field between those
who are baptizing and those who are in
need of baptism.
Everyone there is tired,
sweaty, uncertain.
When Jesus tells John, "Let it be so
now, for it is proper for us in this way
to fulfill all righteousness." He's
saying, "This isn't about you, John.
Whether you're worthy or not, it's not
about me.
It's about the fulfillment of
righteousness for everyone who is in the
kingdom of God.
In that kingdom of God, Jesus and his
followers do not only stand in
solidarity with the powerful and the
self-righteous and those who do not
recognize their need for grace. He does
that, too.
We know many who are like that today.
Jesus stands among them too. Jesus and
his followers also stand with the
marginalized and the powerless.
Those who do know they need the grace of God.
God.
Jesus and his followers stand ready to
be agents of God's grace to everyone
over and over again, even when it's hard.
hard.
Jesus isn't baptized because he needs to
be baptized, but because we need him to
be baptized with us.
He does it for us.
Jesus stands with all of us in our need
to be sanctified.
He stands with us in the River Jordan
because we need to know he is among us.
That he bears and forgives our sin, not
from afar, but as one of us.
It's together in that river that we
There are people in our lives it's hard
for us to identify with or be in
solidarity with.
People whose political beliefs,
whose prejudices, maybe just their
personalities make it hard to stand in
the crowded river of life next to
There are people who make us want to
resist when Jesus asks us to be the
agent of grace to them.
Sometimes we think we're more worthy,
but sometimes we think we're not.
That's when we have to remember as Jesus
told John, "This isn't about me. It
isn't about you. It's about us.
It's about us fulfilling all
righteousness together, which means
being the agents of God's grace to all people
people
who don't look like us or love like we
do or we consider sinners.
And in that moment when we remember
Jesus came to that crowded river to be
baptized with everyone and stand next to
everyone, we are invited to consent.
this little moment uh John sort of
argues with Jesus then consents to
baptism. It's only told in the Matthew
version of the baptism. It happens very
quickly, but it may be one of the
biggest pieces of good news in the gospel.
gospel.
This is not the defeated consent of
someone who's just giving up or giving in.
in.
It's a consent. That's a leap of faith
that says, "Jesus, I I'm not totally
convinced you're right. That this isn't
about my righteousness or another
person's unworthiness. I consent because
you've told me that by doing so,
by standing in solidarity with everyone,
I'm contributing to the fulfillment of
In that moment of consent, the divisions
between us of being more righteous than
another person or them being more
righteous than us
start to dissolve
when you and I are the the hands of
Jesus and the agents of God's grace to
everyone. We do what Jesus did when he
chose to be baptized in that crowded
river with everyone.
We help bring about the fulfillment of
This morning
after this week, we are standing in this
river together,
tired and sweaty, uncertain.
uncertain.
Many of us are grieving the killing of
Renee Good.
Jesus is in the river grieving with us
because we need him to be.
Renee Good needs Jesus to be in the
river. The killer of Renee Good needs
Jesus to be in the river.
That is the unvarnished gospel of grace.
Some of us who grew up evangelical
are grieving the news that Phil Yansy,
one of the most eloquent writers of
God's grace, confessed this last week to
a longunning extrammarital affair.
And Jesus is in the river grieving with us
us
because we need him to be. Phil Yansy
needs Jesus to be in the river with him.
And the person whom he had the affair
with needs Jesus to be in the river with
them. That is the unvarnished gospel of grace.
Be to be clear affirming that Jesus is
standing in the river among us does not
condone harm. It does not condone the
killing of Renee Good. It does not free
anyone of accountability for their
actions, but it reminds us that no human
situation is outside the reach of God's
compassion and grace and call to justice.
>> Yesterday and this morning,
we sang one of my favorite hymns,
Shall We Gather at the River?
My father sang it beautifully and so did
my post hole digging grandfather.
We often sing it as a hymn of hope. The
hope of seeing those we love in the life
that follows our earthly one.
Yes, we'll gather with the saints at the
river that flows by the throne of God.
And that river is flowing among us now.
That river that ran through the
wilderness outside of Jerusalem, where
John baptized sinners and religious
hypocrites and those in grief. It's the
river where Jesus came down to stand in
line with us.
Tired and sweaty and uncertain people,
not because he needed to, but because we
needed him to.
It's a river of grace that flows over
all of us. Not only when we stand before
the throne of God, but when we stand
next to each other. Amen.
let us now proclaim our faith in the
words of the nyine creed.
We believe in one God, the Father, the
Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of
all that is seen and unseen. We believe
in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son
of God, eternally begotten of the
Father, God from God, light from light,
true God from true God, begotten not
made, of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us
and for our salvation, he came down from
heaven. By the power of the Holy Spirit,
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary
and was made man. For our sake, he was
crucified under Pontious Pilot. He
suffered death and was buried. On the
third day, he rose again in accordance
with the scriptures. He ascended into
heaven and is seated at the right hand
of the father. He will come again in
glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end. We
believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life, who proceeds from the
Father and the Son. With the Father and
the Son, he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the prophets. We
believe in one holy, Catholic, and
apostolic church. We acknowledge one
baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We
look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. >> Amen.

Brothers and sisters, may the peace of

I love it. Welcome.
Good morning everyone.
I'm the Reverend J Reer. I'm the
director here at the Episcopal Church of
St. John. Whoever you are and wherever
you are on your journey of faith,
there's a place for you here. There's
also a place for you at Christ's table
during communion. Um when we do
communion, if you haven't been with us
before, we do it in the round. So, um if
you've not done it before, just uh
follow someone who has and we'll show
you how. If you are uncomfortable with
um taking wine from the common cup,
cross your hands in front of you and
taking bread uh counts as communion in
one kind. Um I don't have a lot to
announce today. This Tuesday we will be
having our final book discussion on the
latest Greg Bole book. Um if you haven't
even read the book, it might be
interesting to join that discussion. and
our first discussion had a lot of great
conversation about how um we might be
led to lead uh love each other in this
divided time. So the Zoom link is in the
bulletin. It's also on the website and
in um our weekly e newswsletter. If you
don't get that yet, just fill out the
card in front of you. We'll make sure
that you get that newsletter.
Also today, um you'll see uh Annie has
been taking photographs for our website.
She will also be available to take your
photograph for our printed directory,
which has been a a long time coming, but
I think this will be um the Sunday that
we get the final pictures, and we're
hoping to have that directory out soon.
>> End of the month.
>> What's that?
>> End of the month.
>> End of the month. Um and
Sherry, I think you have something to
share in your minute for ministry today.
Well, I get up here and talk to you
about lots of different things,
but right now what I want to talk to you
about is my experience of the ministry
Well, it's about welcoming
and um I'm always glad to see you and
you and you.
Sometimes there are people that I know
and I see every week. Sometimes there
are people that I know and I see them
once in a while. Good morning, Bill.
And I'm glad to see you.
And sometimes there are new faces.
Um, and I'm glad to see new faces, too.
I walked into the doors of St. John's in
1995, a complete stranger,
and I found so much. Little by little,
I found new ways to experience the Holy Spirit,
Spirit,
to new ways to understand the Bible,
and I found a community
of people
I could love and who could love me back.
even when I didn't always seem to be
And I'm really excited that somebody
walking in the doors for the first time
might possibly have

So
what I would like to say is
if any of you have that gladness in your heart
heart
to welcome people into the doors of our church,
church,
please become an usher.
There's a few housekeeping things you
have to do, you know, and say, "Oh, when
you have to do those things, you can't
pay complete attention to everything
that's going on, but you only do that
once in a while." like every four to six
weeks maybe and um you get the chance to
welcome people. Um there are some people
here you can talk to about the
experience of ushering who are who have
gladness in their hearts. Jeanie is one
of them. Welcome back Jeanie.

to have surgery in my right shoulder and
I want you to lift me up so that that

and out a shout of light, please. Okay.
Thank you.

Beautiful place. Um, but uh also most of
you need to write a check
and uh you you're welcome to put that in
the plate today. Um you can send it in,
mail it into the church, you can uh come

something like that. We've already paid

I will admit that
at some point when they asked me to be

I remembered coming to St. John's in the

Anybody can volunteer to be an atlarge

twisted people who really thinks
accounting is fun. We are looking for a
treasurer, if there's someone who has
that skill set. Um, but anybody can show
up and be an atlarge member. We meet on
Zoom once a month and most of the time
it's pretty light duty. So see me after
the service if you'd be interested in
