0:04 hello English Learners and welcome back
0:06 to English pod my name is Marco and I'm
0:08 Erica how are you Erica Marco I'm doing
0:11 really well today you're excited uhhuh
0:13 we've got a great lesson for everyone
0:15 yes we have a really common situation
0:17 where we're going to use real English
0:19 right yep everyday English English that
0:21 people really use and that's what we
0:23 want you to learn what are we talking
0:25 about today specifically today we have a
0:28 really common situation that is a little
0:30 bit embarrassing
0:33 all right an embarrassing situation so
0:35 let's listen to the dialogue for the
0:37 first time and it's going to be kind of
0:39 fast yeah but don't worry if you don't
0:42 understand everything because after 10
0:45 minutes you'll understand everything
0:47 Perfect all right let's [Music]
1:00 listen Nick how's it going oh hey what
1:01 are you doing in this neighborhood do
1:04 you live around here actually my office
1:06 is right around the corner it was great
1:08 to meet you last week at the conference
1:09 I really enjoyed our conversation about
1:12 foreign investment yeah yeah it was
1:15 really interesting you know I'm in a bit
1:17 of a hurry but here's my card we should
1:18 definitely meet up again and continue
1:21 our discussion sure you still have my
1:24 contact details right you know what this
1:27 is really embarrassing but your name has
1:29 just slipped my mind can you remind me
1:32 sure sure my name is Anna Ferris don't
1:34 worry about it it happens to me all the
1:45 too wow Nick forgot her name yeah that's
1:47 happened to me a couple of times and I'm
1:48 going to tell you about it a little bit
1:50 later okay all right well let's start
1:54 with our three language
1:56 takeaways language
1:58 takeaway so our first word on our
2:02 language takeaway is in a bit of a hurry
2:05 in a bit of a hurry in a bit of a hurry
2:08 in a bit of a hurry so Nick was in a
2:11 hurry yeah that's right this is a great
2:15 phrase so let's listen to three examples
2:23 one can you drive faster I'm in a bit of a
2:45 three I'm in a bit of a hurry so I'll
2:51 later okay so it's clear now basically
2:53 it means that you don't have time you're
2:56 moving really quickly okay perfect now
2:58 let's look at our second language
3:00 takeaway word and it's it's contact
3:04 details contact details contact details
3:06 contact details so what are your contact
3:09 details basically this is the
3:11 information you can find on your
3:14 business card all right so we have like
3:17 our name our telephone number your email
3:20 address perhaps your mobile phone number
3:22 so all the useful information so people
3:24 can get in touch with you yep so people
3:26 can phone you or email you okay so
3:29 contact details great okay so our third
3:33 third word is slipped my mind slipped my
3:37 mind slipped my mind slipped my mind so
3:39 this is a funny phrase it's kind of
3:41 strange right yeah slipped my mind it
3:45 sounds very weird exactly okay so now
3:48 we're going to listen to two examples of
3:50 this phrase try and see if you can
3:55 figure out what it means example
3:57 one I'm sorry I forgot to respond to
4:09 two don't you know what day it is today
4:11 oh it's your birthday it completely
4:19 mind ah so slipped my mind is like I
4:22 forgot you forgot something uhhuh so
4:24 accidentally right okay great now it's
4:27 time for putting it
4:31 together putting it together
4:32 all right Erica why don't you tell our
4:34 listeners what putting it together is
4:37 well putting it together helps you put
4:40 language together it helps you be more
4:43 fluent by knowing how words fit together
4:45 great so let's look at our first phrase
4:50 today and it's around here around here
4:54 around here around here so this is like
4:57 close by close by right I can say for
5:00 example is there a bank around here yeah
5:02 yeah um so that's is there a bank close
5:06 to here exactly now this phrase around
5:08 here we can change it a little bit and
5:09 it means something a little bit
5:12 different right I could say Marco
5:14 there's a great restaurant right around
5:17 the corner right and that would mean
5:19 there is a great restaurant on the other
5:22 Street yep around the corner yep great
5:25 or we have another example we can say
5:28 around there around there right so for
5:31 example I can say uh Los Angeles is a
5:34 great City I used to live around there
5:36 so you used to live near Los Angeles
5:38 exactly all right it's a really good
5:41 phrase and it's really common yeah now
5:44 our next phrase in putting it together
5:48 is terrible with terrible with terrible
5:50 with terrible with so we have a couple
5:53 of examples that will show you how this phrase
5:55 phrase
6:02 you're terrible with numbers you can't
6:14 two I'm terrible with directions I'm
6:21 lost example
6:23 three I'm terrible with faces I can
6:32 like wow I understand that I'm also
6:34 terrible with numbers I can barely add 2+
6:36 2+
6:39 two well yeah I guess uh not everyone is
6:42 a numbers person I'm terrible with uh
6:43 faces I sometimes forget what people
6:46 look like really yeah uhoh so I think
6:48 it's time now for us to listen to our
6:51 dialogue a second time okay this time
6:53 the dialogue will be a little bit slower
6:55 right so try and listen for some of the
7:06 Nick how's it going oh hey what are you
7:09 doing in this neighborhood do you live
7:12 around here actually my office is right
7:15 around the corner it was great to meet
7:18 you last week at the conference I really
7:21 enjoyed our conversation about foreign
7:25 investment yeah yeah it was really
7:28 interesting you know I'm in a bit of a
7:31 hurry but here here's my card we should
7:34 definitely meet up again and continue our
7:35 our
7:38 discussion sure you still have my
7:43 contact details right you know what this
7:46 is really embarrassing but your name has
7:50 just slipped my mind can you remind me
7:55 sure my name is Anna Ferris don't worry
7:59 about it it happens to me all the time
8:06 too so it's more clear now you can
8:08 understand a lot better right yeah
8:10 that's true great so now it's time for
8:13 us to take a look at fluency
8:16 Builder fluency Builder so with fluency
8:20 Builder we take some very simple phrases
8:23 and show you how you can be more fluent
8:27 or how you can sound more native yeah
8:29 great in the beginning of the dialogue
8:32 Anna said Nick how's it going yeah this
8:34 is a great phrase it sounds really
8:37 really natural you know sometimes I hear
8:40 students say how are you or how are you
8:43 doing those are two great phrases but
8:46 this one sounds really really natural it
8:49 just sounds more casual yeah let's
8:52 listen again to that phrase from the
8:55 dialogue how's it
8:58 going how's it
9:00 going great so next time that you find a
9:02 friend on the street you can just say
9:06 hey how's it going yeah so Marco have
9:08 you ever forgotten someone's name yeah
9:10 it's happened to me a couple of times
9:12 and actually the most embarrassing
9:14 situation was that I forgot a family
9:17 memb no a family member's name we had
9:20 like a family reunion and there were a
9:23 lot of aunts and uncles and cousins that
9:24 I hadn't seen in a while and I just
9:27 forgot one of my uncle's names and I was
9:29 uhoh that's pretty embarrassing so what
9:32 did you do well I had to ask one of my
9:34 uh other cousins I'm like hey who is
9:36 that guy he's like oh that's Uncle John
9:38 I'm like oh man I totally forgot yeah so
9:40 it was really embarrassing because I
9:42 didn't know what to call him so I just
9:44 called him Uncle cuz I didn't know his
9:48 name hi Uncle yeah oh yeah so when that
9:50 happens to me when I'm in a business
9:54 setting sometimes what I do is I ask for
9:57 someone's card ah yeah that's the good
9:58 technique yeah or sometimes I might ask
10:01 them to write down their email cuz
10:03 usually their full name is spelled out
10:04 in their email address so that's my
10:06 trick when I forgotten someone's name
10:08 that's a good trick and I guess a lot of
10:10 our listeners can take your advice on
10:13 that okay so I think it's time for us to
10:16 listen to our dialogue one more time
10:30 speed Nick how's it going oh hey
10:31 what are you doing in this neighborhood
10:34 do you live around here actually my
10:36 office is right around the corner it was
10:37 great to meet you last week at the
10:39 conference I really enjoyed our
10:41 conversation about foreign investment
10:44 yeah yeah it was really interesting you
10:46 know I'm in a bit of a hurry but here's
10:48 my card we should definitely meet up
10:50 again and continue our discussion sure
10:53 you still have my contact details right
10:55 you know what this is really
10:57 embarrassing but your name has just
10:59 slipped my mind can you remind me
11:02 sure my name is Anna Ferris don't worry
11:04 about it it happens to me all the time
11:11 too well I hope that you've all enjoyed
