Core Theme
This content explores the profound nature of joy, exemplified by Mary's visit to Elizabeth, highlighting how true joy stems from God's grace, belief in His word, and the filling of the Holy Spirit, rather than fleeting circumstances.
[Music]
now let's take time to pray
gracious father thank you for the word
of god thank you that we have the
privilege of reading it and studying it
and sharing it with others now open our
hearts to the word
deliver us from merely having a mental
understanding give to us a spiritual
understanding that goes deep within our hearts
hearts
i pray in jesus name amen
amen
somebody has defined a secret as
something you tell one person at a time
well that may be so but i think that the
most precious secret a woman holds in
her heart is that she is with child
god told mary that she would experience
a miracle
and that she would give birth to the
promised messiah
and that happened she conceived in her
womb and she had to share this wonderful
secret with somebody
well she decided to go to tell her
kinswoman elizabeth who also was with
child the story is found in luke chapter
1 beginning at verse 39 and mary arose
in those days
and went into the hill country with
haste into a city of judah and entered
into the house of zacharias and greeted elizabeth
elizabeth
and it came to pass that when elizabeth
heard the greeting of mary the babe
leaped in her womb and elizabeth was
filled with the holy spirit
and she spoke out with a loud voice and
said blessed art thou among women and
blessed is the fruit of thy womb
and why is this granted to me that the
mother of my lord should come to me
for lo as soon as the voice of thy
greeting sounded in my ears the babe
leaped in my womb for joy
and blessed is she that believed for
there shall be a performance of those
things which were told her
from the lord
well the emphasis in this event is on
joy in fact there is a threefold joy
seen here there's mary's joy as she went
to share the message with elizabeth
there's the joy of the unborn john the
baptist as he leaped in the womb for joy
and then there's the joy of elizabeth
as she shouted out and gave blessing to
god for what he had done
you know joy is an important thing in
the christian life the joy of the lord
is our strength
when you are rejoicing in the lord it
makes no difference what circumstances
or people may do
when our joy is in circumstances then
the minute the circumstances change
we're unhappy
when our joy is in people when people
fail us
we are unhappy but when our joy is in
the lord who never fails us
then that joy becomes a strength down
inside the joy of the lord
and of course the entire message of the
birth of jesus is a message of joy the
angel said to the shepherds we bring you
good tidings of great joy
which shall be to all people
let's consider first of all mary's joy
mary arose in those days it's rather
interesting that 60 times in the gospel
of luke you find luke using this phrase
somebody arose
it's a book that focuses on activity
something is going on
mary arose in those days and went into
the hill country with haste this is the
first christmas rush isn't it it's
interesting that the shepherds came with
haste over in chapter 2 and
found out that the baby had been born
just as the message had been given to them
them
well she came with hay she probably had
to travel about a hundred miles from
nazareth to hebron we don't know exactly
where zacharias and elizabeth lived but
probably at hebron which was one of the
priestly cities and she made that long
journey now she knew
that elizabeth was with child elizabeth
didn't know that mary knew
but when mary walks into the room
elizabeth automatically knows that mary
has a secret
and it seems that these two women just
fall into each other's joy
and rejoice together at what the lord
has done
now mary had to rush and share this good news
news
with her kinswoman elizabeth what was it
that gave mary her joy she was a poor
girl from every indication mary and
joseph were not rich people
they were poor people
mary was a probably a teenager girls
were engaged to be married quite early
in life in those days and so here is
this young precious teenage girl with
this very special secret that she is the
fulfillment of isaiah chapter 7 and
verse 14.
why was she so joyful well she'd been
chosen by god's grace
verse 28 hail thou who art highly
favored the lord is with thee blessed
art thou among women not above women but
among women god had favored her verse
30. thou hast found favor or grace with
god now grace means we don't deserve it
there was nothing about mary that
deserved any of this it was purely the
grace of god
when you stopped to realize the shame
that she went through and the pain that
she went through it's amazing that she
had any joy at all
you see people would misunderstand
she visited elizabeth then she went back
uh to her own home in nazareth three
months later and then joseph discovered
she was with child and then everybody
discovered she was with child and it was
not a very easy situation what would
joseph say what would her friends say
what would the family member say
and mary is rejoicing in spite of the
fact that she knows she's going to have
to suffer
mary suffered because of the shame
of being misunderstood
later on when our lord had grown up and
had begun his ministry mary suffered as
she saw what he went through and of
course there she was at the cross we'll
talk more about that in a later study
well she rejoiced in the lord because
she had experienced the grace of god
have you experienced the grace of god
you say oh i would certainly like to be
highly favored as mary was
well ephesians chapter 1 verse 6 you
find the very same word that is found in
luke 1 28
hail thou who art highly favored
to the praise of the glory of his grace
says ephesians 1 6 through which he hath
made us accepted in the beloved highly
favored in the beloved graced in the
beloved through god's grace we are
accepted in the lord jesus christ so we
have every reason to rejoice she had
experienced the grace of god she
believed the word of god
verse 38 mary said behold the handmaid
the slave of the lord be it unto me
according to thy word she believed the
word of god and when you believe the
word of god that gives you joy
she was filled with the spirit of god
that gives you joy
don't be drunk with wine paul wrote to
the ephesians be filled with the spirit
and this brings joy into your heart not
the artificial
happiness of this world that is external
but the real joy of the lord which is
internal well mary's joy had to be
shared with others and so she made that
long trip
to visit her kinswoman elizabeth now we
have john's joy it came to pass says
verse 41 of luke 1 that when elizabeth
heard the greeting of mary it wasn't
elizabeth who leaped it was the babe who
leaped in her womb and elizabeth was
filled with the holy spirit in verse 44
elizabeth tells us what happened
for lo as soon as the voice of thy
greeting sounded in my ears the babe
leaped in my womb for joy this was a
fulfillment of course of what had been
promised back in verse 15
gabriel said to zacharias for he john
the baptist shall be great in the sight
of the lord
and shall drink neither wine nor strong
drink and he shall be filled with the
holy spirit even from his mother's womb
this is an interesting experience
here is the yet unborn babe
rejoicing at the message of the lord
jesus christ by the way john the baptist
always rejoiced
at the lord jesus christ
in john chapter 3
people came to john and asked him about
the lord jesus and in verse 27 of john
chapter 3 he answered and said a man can
receive nothing except it be given him
from heaven
ye yourselves bear me witness that i
said i am not the christ but that i am
sent before him
he that hath the bride is the bridegroom
but the friend of the bridegroom which
standeth and heareth him
rejoiceth greatly because of the
bridegroom's voice this my joy therefore
is fulfilled
he must increase but i must decrease
what was the joy of john the baptist
hearing the voice of the lord jesus
standing by and doing the work of the
lord jesus and rejoicing that jesus was
being magnified you see
john's joy was the joy of the lord even
as an unborn babe
john the baptist rejoiced in the lord
jesus christ
i think that you and i need to rejoice
in the lord more
in what he is in who he is
in what he has done for us in his
relationship to us rejoice in the lord
always and again i say rejoice
is paul's word to the philippians
now in verses 42 through 45 we have
elizabeth's joy
it's interesting that elizabeth is not
envious of mary elizabeth rejoices at
the privilege and the honor given to mary
mary
you know how it is sometimes when
mothers like to discuss compare and
contrast babies
and experiences of birth well not so
here when elizabeth heard mary's greeting
greeting
the holy spirit said to elizabeth this
is the mother of your lord
and she spoke out with a loud voice and
said blessed art thou among women again
not above women but among women now why
was she blessed among women because god
had chosen her for this very wonderful privilege
privilege
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb the
lord jesus christ
why is this granted to me
here's a wonderful privilege that the
mother of my lord
should come to me notice the language
there that the mother of my lord
should come to me and
and
lo as soon as the voice of thy greeting
sounded in my ears the babe leaped in my womb
womb
for joy
and here's one more blessing now and
blessed is she that believe you see
that's why mary is so blessed
in verse 28 blessed art thou among women
verse 42 blessed art thou among women
why verse 45 blessed is she that
believed you see mary
had believed the word of god and
therefore she had experienced the power
of god in her life
mary is going to give birth to the
messiah elizabeth is going to give birth
to the forerunner of this messiah and
elizabeth is not the least bit envious
she's joyful that she's able to share in
this wonderful experience
jesus christ is the word but john the
baptist was just a voice
crying in the wilderness
jesus christ is the light but john the
baptist was the lamp that brought the
light to others
jesus christ is the bridegroom john the
baptist was the best man pointing to the
bridegroom and rejoicing at his blessing
well she blesses the lord
and she blesses mary elizabeth is just
filled with blessing she rejoices at the
favor shown to mary she rejoices at the
child being given to mary she rejoices
at the faith that mary had verse 45
blessed is she that believed and so
there's a word of blessing here isn't
there and there's a word of wonder why
is this granted to me
that the mother of my lord should come
to me the wonder of it all
and then there's that word of assurance
for there shall be a performance of
those things
which were told her from the lord
she's saying mary god is going to do
exactly what he promised he would do
and you don't have to worry at all about it
it
they're two different words used for
blessed in this paragraph up in verse 42
it's the word that gives us our word eulogy
eulogy
you'll get o
blessed art thou among women blessed is
the fruit of thy womb but the word
translated blessed in verse 45 is the
same word used in the beatitudes it
means all the blessedness all the happiness
happiness
oh the the wonderful
spiritual favor
uh shown
blessed is she that believe this is the
first beatitude
in gospel history now it's not the first
beatitude found in the new testament you
find those in matthew chapter 5. but as
far as the history is concerned this is
the very first beatitude blessed is she
that believe it's interesting that the
last beatitude also has to do with faith
it's found in john
john
chapter 20
and in john chapter 20 verse 29 jesus
says to thomas because thou hast seen me
thou hast believed blessed are they that
have not seen and yet have believed
well you and i can be blessed blessed of
god because we believe the word of god
and we obey the word of god blessed are
those that hear the word of god and obey
it said the lord jesus in luke chapter
11 verse 28 i trust that your joy is
full today because your heart is
focusing on the lord
