0:06 so I've got some good news we are wired
0:08 to collaborate that's what's true about
0:10 humans but I've got some other news
0:12 which is there are some conditions that
0:14 have to be in place and when we look at
0:17 tuckman's group stages of development
0:19 while his research is awesome he only
0:21 had part of the picture what we know is
0:24 that teams can move to norming but
0:26 there's actually two types of norming
0:28 that groups can move to one is good
0:30 norming where they have great
0:31 relationships great ways of working
0:33 together and they're able to move to
0:36 collaboration but something else can
0:38 happen they can also develop bad norming
0:40 where they start to have habits and
0:41 patterns with each other that actually
0:43 undermine their ability to collaborate
0:45 and work effectively and ultimately this
0:48 drives a team to move to dysfunction and
0:50 learned helplessness which is where
0:51 people have essentially given up and
0:53 they're no longer trying to make things
0:55 better if you want to learn more about
0:57 this you can read Patrick Lyon's book
0:59 the five dysfunctions of the team he
1:01 talks about those being the absence of
1:04 trust fear of conflict lack of
1:07 commitment avoidance of accountability
1:08 and inattention to
1:11 results so let's take a look at what's
1:13 going on that creates the difference
1:15 between good norming and bad norming and
1:17 it all goes down on those first two
1:19 stages of forming and storming and I
1:21 want us to dig in here using a
1:24 neuroscience perspective now one of the
1:25 things I include in all my talks and all
1:27 my books is this idea that if you
1:28 remember nothing else about humans I
1:30 want you to know this we're wired to do
1:35 three things survive belong and become
1:37 so what do I mean by that well survive
1:38 is what you think it is it's our need
1:40 for food water and shelter and we can
1:42 certainly see this play out with natural
1:45 disasters and Wars but when everything's
1:47 fine in your life it really shows up in
1:50 the workplace around your paycheck right
1:51 because that's how we buy food water and
1:53 shelter so people can actually go into
1:56 survival mode if they think that
1:57 something is threatening their ability
1:59 to get a promotion or to get a raise or
2:03 to keep their job next and very tightly
2:05 uh connected to survival is our need to
2:07 belong to become part of a meaningful
2:10 Community to have positive relationships
2:11 and this is because it's actually part
2:14 of our survival entire parts of our our
2:16 biology are dedicated to how we form
2:18 relationships and we're going to look at
2:20 that more in this training and then
2:23 finally it's our need to become our best
2:26 selves our hunger to learn and grow and
2:28 to become our fullest potential of who
2:31 we're meant to be well all of this comes
2:33 together in our work with groups and
2:36 teams so these things can be threatened
2:39 or enhanced by how we work with others
2:41 and we're going to look at survival and
2:43 safety and how that shows up on teams next
