so I've got some good news we are wired
to collaborate that's what's true about
humans but I've got some other news
which is there are some conditions that
have to be in place and when we look at
tuckman's group stages of development
while his research is awesome he only
had part of the picture what we know is
that teams can move to norming but
there's actually two types of norming
that groups can move to one is good
norming where they have great
relationships great ways of working
together and they're able to move to
collaboration but something else can
happen they can also develop bad norming
where they start to have habits and
patterns with each other that actually
undermine their ability to collaborate
and work effectively and ultimately this
drives a team to move to dysfunction and
learned helplessness which is where
people have essentially given up and
they're no longer trying to make things
better if you want to learn more about
this you can read Patrick Lyon's book
the five dysfunctions of the team he
talks about those being the absence of
trust fear of conflict lack of
commitment avoidance of accountability
and inattention to
results so let's take a look at what's
going on that creates the difference
between good norming and bad norming and
it all goes down on those first two
stages of forming and storming and I
want us to dig in here using a
neuroscience perspective now one of the
things I include in all my talks and all
my books is this idea that if you
remember nothing else about humans I
want you to know this we're wired to do
three things survive belong and become
so what do I mean by that well survive
is what you think it is it's our need
for food water and shelter and we can
certainly see this play out with natural
disasters and Wars but when everything's
fine in your life it really shows up in
the workplace around your paycheck right
because that's how we buy food water and
shelter so people can actually go into
survival mode if they think that
something is threatening their ability
to get a promotion or to get a raise or
to keep their job next and very tightly
uh connected to survival is our need to
belong to become part of a meaningful
Community to have positive relationships
and this is because it's actually part
of our survival entire parts of our our
biology are dedicated to how we form
relationships and we're going to look at
that more in this training and then
finally it's our need to become our best
selves our hunger to learn and grow and
to become our fullest potential of who
we're meant to be well all of this comes
together in our work with groups and
teams so these things can be threatened
or enhanced by how we work with others
and we're going to look at survival and
safety and how that shows up on teams next
