[Are you concerned about]
[The hair looking stiff?]
[How to transform it to make it look flowy!]
[Let's start now!]
[Illustration Lesson, Webtoon, Feedback]
[Captivating Drawing Macciatto]
smodo sent me this artwork
I'm about to draw the hair now...
I get asked how to draw
The hair flowy
Instead of making it look stiff
So I'm going to explain while correcting this artwork!
When drawing hair, there are about
[About 6 things!] 6 Different things to consider!
It may seem like a lot but
[I'll simplify it!] I'll explain it one by one
Firstly!
We should talk about the things you should not do
Firstly
[Absolutely things to restrain] Things you should avoid if possible
[People who can't draw hair] Draw the hair like a horn
Why does this look like a horn?
There are about three reasons
Firstly!
There's a big width difference from and here to here
The exact starting point of the hair, here probably?
And the end... there's a huge difference
It's like you're drawing a triangle like this
If there is a big difference between
The starting and ending point of the hair,
[Trimmed it too much!] That means you trimmed it too much
It does not make any sense
First of all, it doesn't make sense...
The hair should gradually get thinner
Don't make it so huge, the triangle
It would be nice to keep it as it is!
What's trending recently are squares
The difference between these two points
Should be minimum as possible to be trendy
So, don't draw this triangle too strongly
[Think about reducing it] You should consider reducing it a bit
This is drawn like this because this character has a spit curl here
Hence the triangle
However, in this case, it should've been drawn
Divided like this
Reducing it more...
Making them into small subtle triangles
It shouldn't been divided like this
Then it fixes the problem a little
So the first step is to reduce the gradient as much as possible
This is one thing you must consider...
As for the second...!
When drawing shadows
[Cylinder shadows] It could be because you draw it like a cylinder
Like this...
To put it more straightforwardly
When you have hair like this
Something like that?
It's because you
Keep on doing half, half, half
To put the shadows in
But what does this mean!
Drawing it like this means
That the hair strand is cylindrical
That's what these shadows mean
[This is not how you do it] So you shouldn't draw it like this
Whenever there's a lump
One shadow per lump
There are people who draw in a bit like this
In this way, each and every one becomes
Round, round, round That's what you're drawing with these shadows
So that's why it ends up looking like a horn
[You shouldn’t do this] That's not the way it should be drawn
And thirdly!
[Rhythm, size is constant] The rhythm is the problem
So, for example, when there is a lump
As seen here, this feels like a one strand
This and there are other lumps like this
Each of these chunky ones
[Size should not be similar] Should not be similar in size
But if you look at it now
If the sizes appear similar
When the sizes are similar
It just feels like clumps
Rather than looking thin...
The hair looks like lumps of plastic
It feels like it's clumped together
It does not look as detailed
You might feel that a lot
[Captivating Drawing Macciatto] Search Macciatto Art on Twitter
So, how should we fix this?
[Firstly!] The first thing
Just now, I mentioned about the clump...
This clump! You have to grasp the rhythm well
If you're wondering what this means!
If we talk about this as a rhythm?
Thump Thump Thump Thump Boom Boom Boom Boom
That kind of feeling
But if you do this? It becomes boring
Don't just use the same rhythm
Soft-strong-medium-soft soft-strong-medium-soft
Mix it up a bit
To put it simply, intermittently
A thin line needs to be included
So in the case of this picture
You need to insert thin chunks in the middle
Of course, you can also change the line art!
Even if you put in just one thin chunk like this
It will make the hair look more thinner
Let me show you!
So when you see this!
Soft-soft-strong
Soft-medium-medium and back to soft here
[Mix it up] It has to be mixed
And when doing soft, make sure to draw it really softly
You know the thinnest hair I've drawn now
That gives a clue to the viewer!
Even if only one or two thin ones are interspersed,
It looks like thin strands of hair
Came together to make
A chunk of hair
So if you mix it like this!
I'll just roughly show you the front hair!
Because you might not notice the difference,
I'll show you a little before and after!
[Before] It was like this
Just by changing the rhythm to soft, strong, medium, soft
[After] Like this
Doesn't it look much better?
The chunkiness has somewhat disappeared
[This is the most basic!] This is actually the basic point
Actually, if you just do this well...
Commonly called 'matted hair'?
Matted hair can be solved, if you do this
The second point is!
It should be split more at the ends
Towards the outside
Now, when you look at your hair!
It may seem like you're looking at every strand of hair
But in reality, we can't see each individual hair strand
Let me show you with a picture!
Not a picture, a video actually
It's a video of a person
Stroking her hair
Look at this hair
We unconsciously think we can see every single hair
But in reality, we can't
It's not easy to see every single hair
The inside
Feels like it's clumped together a lot
But as the hair goes to the end, it looks like it's splitting up
Towards the end, it gets thinner and thinner...
[Gets thinner as it spreads out!] It gets thinner as it spreads out
[Don't draw it as one chunk from the beginning to the end]
[Start with a big chunk and thin out at the end!]
[Like a tree branch]
[Thin and abundant!]
When arranging thin hair
Especially this outer line part, based on where the hair ends
It would be good if you add more!
So, just like I mentioned before,
Drawing it somewhat like this
So it doesn't end up looking like a triangle
But with more strands coming out like this
If I were to say the opposite!
It's better if the inner parts aren't as separated
There are people who draw this part like this
If you do it that way, it feels more clumpy
The hair could look damp
Because the more tender the hair,
Rather than these parts overlapping
Just like I have shown you before, it becomes one large clump
Dividing everything here
Makes the hair look clumpier
As for the third! Rather than making this into a perfect triangle
Here, here, and this
Draw them so there isn't a huge difference in size
Fix that a bit
So the beginning and the end can be coherent
Try to make it a bit more balanced
They don't have to be exactly the same!
If they are the same,
It could look like a hime cut
You know hime cuts right?
The straight angular side bangs!
To make it look like that
The beginning and the end should be the same width
Fourth, you have to think of them as paper
As opposed to clumps
Don't draw the hair in clumps
But instead, think of them as
Toilet paper rolls
Drawing it like this makes it look more fresh
It looks more livelier
And lighter
But if you look at now
smodo has also tried this method
Tried making it look like thin paper rolls
But why wasn't this effective?
It's because
The shadows were inserted half only
Then this can't feel like a ribbon
It has to be a cylinder
So, now the fifth!
If you want to give a flat feel
You shouldn't insert the shadows like this
So what should you do?
What does it mean to add shadows?
[The angle has changed] The angle has changed, in simple terms
Like this wave has set This is what it means to add shadows
But don't just worry about the left and right
[Top and bottom shadow] Try paying attention to the top and bottom
That alone changes it more into a ribbon feel
Normally, the hair looks like this
[Usually, there is a curly feel] Where it's slightly curly
There is not much difference in height here
This and this are almost similar, you know?
A little like this?
But where does it curl up the most?
In fact, it's more here
The speed at which this one spins
Is much stronger than this, right?
Then how you should have put the shadow?
This is the correct way
So this is why people who draw like ribbons fail
Because they don't consider the top and bottom shadows
Drawing it like this makes it look flatter
The hair looks fresher!
So, there you go!
I've explained mostly all the important tips
So based on this, I have made modifications
And I have filmed a video
So let's go over it once more
Now, from here, I'm working on the hair
The thing I was talking about!
Controlling the intensity!
And making the top curl more
And modifying the curls on the bottom
I focused on those things
And I made the ends split a little bit more
I also filled in some unfinished parts
Look at this, just by doing this,
The hair is a bit more...
Fresh
And with some final touches
The hair comes out much more voluminously!
Now
I said there were 6 things to consider, and I haven't mentioned the last
The last is hair highlights
Now, if you look at me drawing hair highlights
After outlining all at once!
You need to draw while adjusting the intensity
I drew it so that it continues from here to here!
Let's look at the original one more time
Here, the highlight is in a straight line! Can you see?
It's kind of like this, right?
But highlights are super important!
When we draw a picture!
We guess the character's face shape while looking at the highlight
But what happens if it's in a straight line?
The face stops being round
It ends up looking flat
Therefore,
Adjusting the highlights according to the character's facial shape
Makes it look so much better
And when you're drawing the highlights, you need to adjust the strength well
The problem here is
The hair shown on the bottom is in clumps
But the highlight is in small segments
The rhythm does not match
They don't go well together
It looks weird
But if you look at the one I modified
Do you see the efforts I made trying to match them?
I adjusted them accordingly to how I draw the hair on the bottom
So they have a similar rhythm
This is very important
This is something to watch out for when drawing highlights
[Time to compare] This is the final drawing done by me
[Time to compare] And this is the original
The hair can be fixed to this extent!
Most importantly!
If I were to pick an important note
Rhythm, just by getting the flow...
[50% is solved] 50 percent is solved, mostly
Try it in your own drawings!
Then drawing hair will become easier!
This was an imitated drawing done by JIIIP
And said the hair isn't what they'd pictured
I see some problems!
[Same rhythm] As you see, the rhythm is the same
One, one, one, one, it's repetitive
It's a bit like that
And then, the end is just a triangle
Then top and bottom shadows should be more detailed
So it's because of these
The hairstyle is a bit ambiguous
And now this part!
Clustering it up to some extent is needed
It feels like there's too much going on here!
It often looks better if the insides are clumped up a bit
Just by removing the coherency, it looks much better
[Balance is important lol] The important thing is balance
You need some big ones too!
If there aren’t any big ones at all, that won’t do either!
[How to scribble hair!] Just draw it with a surface
Make a pen with strong pressure like this
Drawing with a surface like this,
[Good for mental health] It's better for your mental health.
Beginners would do well to do it this way
[Get the outline] And pick the outline later
To explain to those
who don't know this function,
Create a layer here, and then
If you go to the layer settings and click the first thing you see,
It creates an outline
Use this!
At first, draw a little thickly like this,
Then draw the medium size by reducing the brush size a bit
Then make it thinner to draw thin hair
This is useful for drawing fluttering hair
When you guys are drawing fluttering hair
The reason why you fail
Is because you're too tense!
So it comes out looking stiff...
Like this, like this
[It's not strong!] So it's not strong!
So that's why you need to blow it softly
So this will be
A bit difficult until you learn how to control your lines
So drawing it like this
May be more comfortable for beginners
But when you improve your skills,
Then just...
Drawing like this will become easier for you
Experience is key
People who draw a lot improve their lines
Thinking you'll get better today won't do
You need to draw a lot to improve
