0:01 hi it's AJ and welcome to rule
0:06 number
0:07 six rule number six is simple but very
0:12 very important and very very effective
0:15 in fact you'll have noticed that all of
0:17 these rules are simple but they're very
0:20 powerful in fact individually they're
0:22 very powerful just using one of these
0:25 rules can improve your English speaking
0:27 a lot but the the real power comes when
0:31 you use all seven of them to totally
0:35 change the way you learn
0:37 English so what's number six number six
0:40 is this only use
0:43 authentic real English
0:48 materials what does that mean well put
0:51 another way don't use textbooks I talked
0:54 about this already when I was talking
0:56 about throwing away your grammar books
0:59 but really you need to throw away all of
1:01 your textbooks all of them get rid of
1:04 them they're horrible they're boring you
1:06 know they're boring they're
1:10 useless you know get rid of all the
1:12 grammar textbooks all those with the
1:14 little fake you know conversations in
1:17 them and all the nice little graphics
1:19 and pictures they put in to try to make
1:21 them seem interesting when in fact it's
1:24 really boring because what do those
1:26 textbooks really have they got a bunch
1:28 of fake conversations with boring actors
1:31 reading them and then they have a bunch
1:34 of little boring activities and drills
1:37 that are supposed to help you improve
1:38 your
1:39 communication it's
1:41 all bad it's not going to help you what
1:44 you need to do instead is use only
1:46 authentic real English materials what
1:49 does that
1:51 mean when I say real here's what I mean
1:55 I mean the best materials are the ones
1:57 that are for native speakers in other
2:00 words books and audios and videos that
2:03 are made for Canadians Americans British
2:07 people
2:09 Australians they're not made for
2:10 foreigners learning English they're made
2:12 for the people actually living in those
2:16 countries that's a real authentic
2:20 material book CD video
2:24 whatever you can also use materials that
2:28 are very very very very similar or very
2:31 very close to real materials for example
2:34 there are some really good um books out
2:37 there story
2:38 books that they're they're about real
2:42 stories you know written about you know
2:46 like little novels little short novels
2:48 but they're using a little bit simpler
2:50 English so that people who are learning
2:52 English can understand them a little
2:53 more easily but it's not a textbook it's
2:56 a real story some of them have audio so
2:58 it's like a real audio book book real
3:01 interesting information it's not you
3:04 know a bunch of rules and stupid
3:06 activities and fake
3:08 conversations so those kind of materials
3:10 are also quite good that's what I mean
3:12 when I say real materials
3:16 real and let me give you an example of
3:19 this let's say you wanted to improve
3:21 your reading your English reading
3:23 skills now there's two ways to do this
3:26 the old traditional boring way which
3:28 doesn't work is to go out and get a
3:31 bunch of you know fake tests for example
3:34 a bunch of TOEFL tests and read all
3:36 those extremely boring essays in the the
3:39 TOEFL book and then take a bunch of
3:42 tests with it or you could get some
3:44 reading comprehension
3:46 textbook once again reading a bunch of
3:49 boring stories written by Boring people
3:52 and then take a bunch of boring tests or
3:55 answer a bunch of boring questions at
3:57 the end of
3:58 it it's not very fun and it's not
4:01 effective you could also go out and buy
4:03 some vocabulary books and try to
4:05 memorize all this new vocabulary these
4:08 huge
4:09 lists none of that works very
4:12 well I mean you can improve that way but
4:14 it's very slow and it's painfully
4:18 boring a much better way and the
4:22 research shows a much more effective and
4:24 Powerful way is to read easy stories to
4:28 read easy
4:31 novels now what does easy mean well it
4:33 depends on your level for some people
4:36 easy means children's books right books
4:39 that are made for American children or
4:41 British children or Australian children
4:44 whatever but they're not made for
4:46 foreign students they're made for the
4:48 local people but they're at an easier
4:50 level for because they're for
4:53 children for you for a lot of people
4:55 watching this video probably I would say
4:59 easy
5:00 novels for young
5:02 adults for you know older elementary
5:05 school children or middle school
5:07 children or High School level depends on
5:10 what your level is so when I say easy I
5:13 usually mean you should understand about
5:15 95% of the words without a
5:19 dictionary so then you can easily guess
5:22 the other 5% I've mentioned this
5:25 before so if you wanted to improve your
5:27 reading what you would do is you'd go
5:29 out and you would read as many of these
5:31 novels as you could you could read
5:34 magazines easy magazines for uh for kids
5:38 or for young adults and read lots of
5:40 them you could read a lot of
5:43 novels you know there's lots of those
5:45 novels for for adolescence Adventure
5:47 novels romance
5:49 novels and you know they're for young
5:51 adults so they might be a little bit
5:53 like not really for total adults but
5:55 it's much more interesting and fun to
5:57 read those than textbooks I promise
5:59 promise you and you would read lots and
6:01 lots and lots of them and as you did
6:03 that your vocabulary would increase your
6:05 reading comprehension would increase
6:07 very quickly your reading speed in
6:09 English would improve very very quickly
6:13 and soon in just a few
6:15 months those kinds of books would be
6:18 super easy for you and then you could
6:20 start reading more difficult
6:23 material maybe you would start reading
6:25 you know High School level novels and
6:28 stories and you'd read lots and lots and
6:30 lots of those if you like romance you'd
6:32 read romance books if you like Adventure
6:34 you'd read Adventure if you like science
6:36 fiction or fantasy you'd read those kind
6:38 of books if you write like nonfiction
6:41 well you'd read a lot of non-fiction but
6:44 it' be real
6:46 books and then eventually those would
6:48 feel easy after it happens quite quickly
6:52 in fact if you if you read every single
6:53 day like that you you improve quickly
6:56 and then you could go up to adult level
6:58 novels you could read books by you know
7:01 famous best-selling authors John Grisham
7:04 Stephen King again depends on your
7:07 interest always choose things that you
7:09 personally like and enjoy and by reading
7:12 lots and lots and lots of those books
7:14 reading lots and lots and lots of
7:15 Stephen King King books for example or
7:17 John Grisham
7:18 books your reading would improve so fast
7:22 so
7:23 powerfully and so much faster so much
7:26 more powerfully than someone who's
7:28 trying to learn from textbooks and
7:30 reading comprehension books and
7:32 vocabulary books this is a much faster
7:35 more powerful way to improve your
7:38 reading now of course in these rules
7:40 we're talking about speaking and
7:42 listening so how do you do that well
7:45 it's the same idea it's exactly the same
7:47 idea instead of using books you would
7:49 use audios so you want to listen to as
7:52 many easy
7:54 real audios as you can every day
7:59 you want to listen to audio stories you
8:01 want to listen to easy audio books you
8:04 want to listen to podcasts audio
8:06 podcasts audio radio
8:10 shows easy audios on topics that you
8:13 enjoy that are
8:16 entertaining it's real
8:18 stuff and you would follow that same
8:20 thing for a while those really easy ones
8:23 would maybe they would feel a little
8:25 difficult to you but after listening to
8:26 them again and again and again they
8:27 quickly become easy then you go up to a
8:29 higher level and then you do it again
8:31 again and again and again and soon
8:33 you're listening to real audios real
8:36 audio books for adults for American
8:38 adults for British
8:41 adults or real radio shows for Americans
8:44 or Canadians or British or Australian
8:46 you can mix all of those it doesn't
8:49 matter that is how you learn real
8:53 English because see in the textbooks
8:55 it's not real English it's very
8:57 unnatural those fake conversations are
8:59 unnatural and we don't really speak that
9:02 way right what's lesson one in most
9:06 textbooks hello Hi how are you I'm fine
9:10 and
9:11 you right and you have these actors
9:14 reading that conversation in a very
9:17 unnatural way the pronunciation is very
9:19 strange because nobody really talks like
9:22 that and in fact in the United States
9:25 when you meet someone the first time you
9:27 will almost never hear that kind of
9:31 conversation people really say things
9:34 like how you doing what's up nice to
9:37 meet
9:38 you you don't find those little phrases
9:41 in most textbooks yet those are the most
9:44 common real ways of greeting people
9:48 that's why you know you learn all this
9:49 textbook English and then you go to a
9:51 country and you can't understand
9:54 anybody even though you know you know
9:56 10,000 words or 20,000 words or
9:58 something and you know all this grammar
10:00 but you can't understand the real people
10:02 having real conversations why because
10:05 you learned textbook English you did not
10:07 learn from real English materials
10:09 authentic English materials so if you
10:11 want to be able to
10:14 function with real
10:16 English especially if you want to talk
10:18 to people who are from Canada or the
10:20 United States or the UK or
10:23 Australia then you must learn from real
10:27 materials
10:30 very
10:31 important and you know once again this
10:33 is how children learn right children do
10:37 not study textbooks to learn their own
10:41 language right little two-year-olds and
10:43 one-year-olds and threeyear olds are not
10:45 studying English textbooks in the United
10:48 States they're learning from stories and
10:52 real conversations and real
10:55 communication about real ideas or real
10:58 emotions
11:00 that's how they learn and that's why
11:03 they speak so naturally and effortlessly
11:05 if you bring a foreign child child from
11:07 another country to the United
11:10 States and you put them with a bunch of
11:13 children American children who speak
11:15 English all the time that child will
11:17 learn English
11:20 perfectly with no textbooks with no
11:22 grammar
11:24 study how do they do it well they do it
11:27 with real stories Real playing playing
11:29 with the other children real
11:31 communication real
11:35 English so what you need to do is number
11:38 one is go out and get real materials and
11:41 of course our lessons that's what I
11:44 do I tell you stories and I give you a
11:48 lot of teachings my lessons are not
11:50 focused on the little parts of English
11:52 because I don't want you to think about
11:54 that at all I want you to think about
11:57 interesting ideas I want I want you to
11:59 feel entertained I want you to focus on
12:01 the emotions and the
12:03 ideas of what I'm saying that of what's
12:07 inside the
12:09 audio so most of my main lessons are on
12:13 personal growth topics about you know
12:15 being more healthy having more energy
12:17 being more successful in all parts of
12:19 your life I want you focused on those
12:22 ideas you're you're learning English at
12:24 the same time but I don't want you
12:26 thinking about every little word I don't
12:27 want you thinking about the grammar
12:28 rules I want you focusing on the ideas
12:31 powerful ideas interesting ideas as you
12:33 focus on those real ideas real
12:37 emotions you will learn the English
12:40 automatically it's the same with the
12:42 stories I make them funny and crazy so
12:44 that you remember them so that you are
12:47 entertained you're focused on the
12:49 emotions and the crazy ideas in the
12:53 story and the grammar and the vocabulary
12:56 and the pronunciation just happen
12:58 automatically you're focused on being
13:00 entertained you're focused on getting
13:01 interesting information useful
13:03 information that's what makes real
13:06 material so powerful and so much better
13:10 than some terrible boring useless
13:13 textbook which will not teach you real
13:15 English anyway so use real materials in
13:19 order to improve much much much
13:22 faster to understand real speech so that
13:26 when you go to a country or you talk to
13:28 someone from an english- speaking
13:30 country you will actually understand
13:32 them you'll understand the the real
13:34 English they use in conversations not
13:37 some textbook that nobody
13:39 uses and I think another big reason to
13:43 use real materials is you'll enjoy it
13:45 more it's just more fun it's more
13:47 interesting instead of learning a bunch
13:49 of boring junk in a textbook that's
13:53 that's just useless and not real you get
13:55 to learn real interesting ideas or you
13:58 get to be entertained you get to have
14:00 interesting emotions it's real stuff
14:03 it's the kind of things you might enjoy
14:05 in your own language so important so
14:09 powerful so rule number six is this use
14:13 only authentic real English materials
14:18 and that's rule six tomorrow's our last
14:20 rule so look for the next email tomorrow
14:24 last rule see you again bye-bye
