I suppose the pivotal point in my life
was a near-death experience at the age
of 18.
I had been for several years a rock
musician and leading that kind of lifestyle,
lifestyle,
which took me closer and closer to
something that was very
self-destructive, though I did not
intend it to be. And then I had an
overdose experience where I felt my soul
leaving my body and going off into this tunnelike
tunnelike
uh transition from time to eternity. And
I was speeding up and rushing through
this tunnel into another world. And I
had no idea what was awaiting me. And
because of that, thankfully I came back
from that negative experience. But it
left me pondering
who I was, why I was alive, what the
real purpose of life is. I drifted so
far from that. And so I made a radical
decision. A lot of my friends thought it
was very radical. I dropped out of
college with one intention and that was
to search for God and to search for
truth until I found both. And I I kind
of understood that if I found one I
would find the other. And at the time it
was very popular in western culture
especially to dive into eastern
religions. And I met an Indian guru
named Yogi Bahan who taught a mixture of
seekism and Hinduism and new age
spirituality. It was really a unique
brand to him. His group was called
Kundalini Yoga. And I got very deep into
the study of yoga. And incidentally the
word yoga means yoke. And the
implication is that you are yolked with
Brahman which is considered to be
ultimate reality in Hinduism but is
conceived to be an impersonal life force
and that you are yoking yourself with
that force that impersonal life force in
order to come into a point of
self-realization or God realization God
consciousness Christ consciousness
there's a lot of different names for it
but a state of enlightenment and I
searched after that passionately. Now I
might insert here that I was raised
Roman Catholic and I was very fervent
for a number of years. I was an ultra
boy. I attended parochial school at one
point. I was even on my way to a
monastery. So I was very passionate. But
in my teenage years, I drifted away from
that kind of life and that approach to
religion and spirituality altogether.
And when I began searching into Eastern
religions, I thought I had achieved a
much broader state of mind that I could
embrace the idea at that point that all
religions are just different paths to
ultimate reality. That seemed more
logical. It seemed more compassionate.
It seemed more tolerant.
But um of course now I see things
differently. But at the time I thought
it was growth spiritually for me to have
that mindset that I could embrace just
any kind of truth that claimed to be
truth and assimilated into my belief
system whether it was Buddhism or
Hinduism or Sikism or whatever religion
I might mention including Christianity.
So I was very very committed to it,
extremely committed because this goal
was of all goals the most important to
come into a relationship with God or to
achieve God consciousness. What could be
more important than that? So I devoted
myself 14 hours a day in solitude. And I
know that sounds very extreme to a lot
of people, but in the ashram I joined,
we would get up at 3:30 in the morning
and start the day with about an hour of
asas, which are the physical yoga
exercises, which incidentally are
supposed to connect you with individual
gods. Every yoga posture is dedicated to
a specific Hindu deity and it's actually
an invocation to that deity to come and
somehow influence your life and manifest
in your life and impart to you certain
characteristics that deity has. And
that's unknown to a lot of people that
just do basic yoga. They go to tune up
their body. They attend a hot yoga
class. They don't know that every one of
those particular asas has a specific
purpose attached to it. And of course,
the ultimate goal is the awakening of
the condundalini, which I'll get into
more later. But uh anyway, I I I was
very devoted. We would spend about an
hour doing asas and then we do
pranayyama which are the breathing
exercises where you control your
breathing in such a way that is supposed
to heighten your consciousness and then
different types of meditation. See
kundalini yoga assimilated hat yoga and
raja yoga and mantra yoga and a lot of
other types of yoga into it under its
umbrella. And then we would also chant
mantras for long periods of time,
sometimes 30 minutes, 60 minutes. One of
the mantras that we use quite often that
most people involved in condalini yoga
would use went like this. Akonar satnam
sir guru. And the reason I mention it is
because of the subtlety of the message
that was actually veering into something
that was untrue.
Ekonar means there is one God. Satnam
means truth is his name and ekonar
satnam siriwa guru the holy spirit is
our teacher and there's different
interpretations of what those words mean
but we were basically told back then
that's what the meaning was well all
those things are true but now I see them
from a biblical standpoint and they mean
something much different
because when I as a Christian now say
there is one God I mean something
completely different from a Hindu that
says there is one God or a Muslim that
says there is one God. Across the board
all three worldviews make that
declaration but mean completely
different things by it. And I'm not sure
that's something people really understand.
understand.
For instance, when a Hindu says there is
only one God, then he's saying that
there's an underlying spiritual
presence. As I said, Brahman, there's an
underlining uh underlying spiritual
presence, a life force that is within
every plant, every animal, every human
being, and manifests in different types
of spirituality, different types of
religion. And so the source is the same
similar to Star Wars where uh Darth
Vader the villain can tap into the force
in order to activate evil qualities and
powers and Luke Skywalker can tap into
the same force to activate heroic deeds
that are done by that power. And yet
they're both sourcing the same place.
They're both drawing their power from
the same place according to that
fictional story. Well, in like manner,
that's basically the idea that's given
in Hinduism that all religions have this
basic underlying influence of the same
spirit, the same life force. And so when
a Hindu says there is only one God, he's
saying that all interpretations of God
and all approaches to God are legitimate.
legitimate.
And then on the opposite end of the
pole, you have Islam
that believes that there is only one God
to the exclusion of all others. The
Hindu point of view is all inclusive.
The Muslim point of view is exclusive
because to a Muslim only Allah is God.
And one of the worst sins you can commit
in Islam is called sherk. And sherk
means attributing divinity to anything
or anyone other than Allah. And Allah
exists separate from the physical
creation. While many Hindus believe that
Brahman, the ultimate reality, is
permeating all of the universe and that
there's a divine essence in everything.
And that's based on something called
pantheism. Without getting too
complicated, pantheism is the idea that
the universe is not a creation of God
that exists apart from him, but rather
an emanation of God. So that all
physical matter is actually spirit
manifested. And so because of that, when
a Muslim says there is only one God,
he's he's against every other worldview
in saying that because as a Christian, I
believe Jesus was God manifested in the
flesh, which would be a transgression of
that sin that Muslims call shirt because
I believe he was the divinity. He was
all divinity. He was the father
manifested in a physical form in the
form of his son in this world. So
the reason I brought that out is because
now you see that three people can say
the same thing and yet mean three
different things by it. The Hindu can
say there is one God. It's all
inclusive. And the Muslim can say there
is one God and it's totally exclusive.
But I as a Christian also will say there
is only one God. But I believe that
there is only one God according to the
biblical revelation.
And that is so unique that you don't
find it in any other worldview in the
world that the Godhead is comprised of
the father, the son, and the holy
spirit. And these three are one god.
There is only one god yet three
expressions of the godhead. And that's
father, son, and holy spirit. So there
is only one god. But now I see it much
differently than back when I was
involved in yoga. Now incidentally that
was in 1970 that I got very deeply
committed to the study of yoga. I
eventually left the ashram that I helped
to form in the beginning with several
other people in Daytona Beach, Florida
and felt overwhelmed with the desire to
go to Tampa, Florida. Now, I believe it
was God leading me even before I knew
him because some very pivotal things and
important things happened in Tampa. I
went down there and opened up an ashroom
and obtained free reign from four
universities to use their facilities to
offer yoga classes. And so I was
teaching yoga at four universities in
the Tampa, Florida area. University of
South Florida, University of Tampa,
Florida Presbyterian,
which uh they they should have known
better than opening their door to my
influence. But then also a school down
in uh Sarasota called New College. And I
think they have a different name now,
but I had about 300 students who thought
I was their guru. And incidentally, the
word guru comes from two root words, gu
and rue, that mean out of darkness into
the light. And that's what a guru is
supposed to do. The word guru basically
means a teacher who's supposed to bring
you out of darkness into light. But you
can't take anyone to a place you haven't
been yourself. And because I had never
really encountered the true light, the
Bible calls Jesus the true light that
lights every man that comes into the
world. Then I could not lead anyone else
there. And someone just recently
commented to me. They said, "You got
stuck in the goo, didn't you?" Yes, I
did. I I I was in darkness thinking I
was in the light. And that's possibly
why Jesus warned his disciples and said,
"Take heed, lest the light that is in
you be darkness, for great is that
darkness." If you claim to be in the
light and yet you're really walking in
spiritual darkness, that's an even more
intense darkness than someone who
recognizes they have a dark lifestyle
that needs to change. Well, let me share
with you the miraculous things that
happened that brought me to a salvation
experience because I was totally totally
committed to a far eastern world view. I
was totally committed to the idea that
that there were 330 million gods in
Hinduism that were all emanated out of
Brahman. I was totally committed to the
idea that God was within every human
being. And to find gods, you look within.
within.
And then the Tampa Trabune newspaper
came out and did an article on me. They
thought I was an oddity in their
community, a yoga teacher running a yoga
ashroom. Nothing like that had ever
happened in Tampa before. And I thought
the article would cause my classes to
mushroom. Instead, it alerted a local
prayer group to begin praying for me on
an ongoing basis. and they had a 24-hour
prayer chain and they cut the article
out of the paper, sent it to all their
prayer warriors and assigned everyone
that task of praying for me every hour
of every day along with many other
prayer requests that they were all
focused on. But see, I'm getting 24-hour
intercession going up to heaven, going
up to God uh in my behalf. How do you
escape that? I'm sure the wheels started
turning in heaven so to speak and within
3 weeks God started responding in a very
detailed way where different things
connected to bring forth my salvation
experience. First of all, I got a letter
from an old friend of mine and he and I
had both quit college for the same
reason and that was to study under
different gurus. He went with a totally
different person. And he wrote me this
letter that was completely unexpected.
And he told me how he had heard an
audible voice when he walked in a
church. He heard an audible voice say,
"Jesus is the only way." And he said at
that precise moment, he felt the spirit
of God fall on him and fill him up and
he was born again.
Now, I was raised Catholic and we never
heard the phrase being born again in the
Catholic Church. In fact, Catholic
doctrine teaches that when a child is
sprinkled at birth, which I was, that's
when that child is born again and that's
when the spirit of God comes to live in
that child and that's when that child
receives the gift of eternal life and
that child is positioned in Christ and
becomes a new creature in Christ and
becomes a part of the church. Well, none
of those things happened to me when I
was a a little infant. In fact, if I had
truly been born again as an infant, I
believe I would have been a much better
person growing up. I would have had a
connection with God, a personal
relationship with God that I never had
as a Catholic. But that phrase intrigued
me, being born again, spiritual rebirth,
where the spirit of God came into him.
And I knew here I teach as a yoga
teacher that God's already inside of
everyone. And my friend was saying, "No,
that's the wrong perspective. God's
external and he comes into your heart
when your heart is cleansed by the blood
of Jesus." where you asked for Jesus to
save you because of what he endured on
the cross. Where he became sin for us,
paying the price, the necessary price
for our sin, which was voiced by God in
the beginning, he said, "In the day you
eat thereof, you shall surely die." So
the outcome of sin is death. And Jesus
took our place in death. not only mine
but every human being that ever has
lived or ever will live or is living
right now, he paid the substitutionary
price. That's what Larry communicated in
his letter. And I thought, I don't
believe that. Uh I thought that doesn't
make logical sense. What I believe right
now just seems so much more logical. And
I tried to shove it out of my mind, but
I kept thinking over and over again
about being born again. being filled
with the spirit of God. And finally
after I don't know how long it was,
maybe 7 days, 10 days, it just kept
weighing on my mind. I thought I am a
truth seeker.
And if I'm a truth seeker, I've got to
humbly open myself up to something even
if it seems illogical. So, I decided I'm
going to dedicate one day to Jesus and
I'm going to ask him if he's real. If
he's the savior of the world, if he's
the only way to get back to a
relationship with the father, as my
friend claimed, he quoted John 14:6
where Jesus said, "I am the way and the
truth and the life, and no one comes to
the father but by me."
I thought that that's either the claim
of an insane, self-diluted maniac or he
really was who he claimed to be. So I
thought there's a lot on the line here.
But I said, Jesus, if you truly are the
savior of the world, then give me a sign
today. Give me a sign. And I was
expecting something to happen like
happened to Larry. But God is unique in
the way he reaches out to every
individual. And it was completely
different for me. I heard no audible
voice. I had no initial encounter like
that. But uh I did I did meet someone
who was God's spokesman to me. That day
I dedicated to Jesus. I decided I'm not
going to meditate. I'm not going to do
pranayyama. I'm not going to do asas.
I'm not going to do anything associated
with yoga. I'm not going to read the
Bhagavad Gita. I'm not going to read the
vas during my time of meditating on
Hindu scripture. All I'm going to do is
read the Bible and pray to Jesus. 14
hours. 14 hours reading the Bible and
praying to the Lord Jesus Christ. If
you're real, show me. Nothing happened.
No voice, no supernatural phenomenon, no
apparition, no visitation, but God had
his own way of reaching me. That
afternoon I was supposed to teach a yoga
class at University of South Florida and
I was running a little late because of
what I've been doing. So I had to
hitchhike. Uh and the reason I had to
walk or hitchhike everywhere is I'd made
a commitment. This is how passionate I
was about finding God. I had made a
commitment to own no material things
except what was absolutely necessary
which was about one change of clothes
and a few eating utensils. And that's
all that I called my own. And I would
have given that away quickly if I needed
to. But I stepped out on the road
hitchhiking to go teach it at the
university and God's timing was precise.
It was amazing. I still look back after
over 50 years and I marvel at how God
connected all these things together. One
of the members of the prayer group was
two miles away from me at that very
moment walking into a laundromat and the
Holy Spirit spoke to him and said,
"Don't go in there. Get back in your van
and start driving. I've got a job for
you to do. That's all the instructions
God gave." And he was a member of the
prayer group that had been praying for
me for several weeks. And I had heard
about him because he was a former devote
to yogaandanda. And Yogaandanda um is
not known to a lot of people but to
those in the yoga community he's well
known. He wrote a book called
Autobiography of a Yogi and his
particular sect is Ka Yoga. Very popular
among those that are devoted to that
mindset. So, I'd heard about him because
someone had told me that this guy was
really deep into it and a really
advanced yoga student and their wording
was he fell away from it and got hung up
with a bunch of Jesus freaks on the
other side of Tampa. So, I'd kind of
vaguely heard about him. He had heard
about me because he'd been praying for
me for three weeks. I step out on the
road hitchhiking. He makes two or three
definite turns by the leadership of the
Holy Spirit. God kept giving him
impulses. Turn here, turn there. He saw
me hitchhiking. He told me later on that
he never picked up hitchhikers,
especially people that look like I did
at the time, but he said he felt that
compulsion again and pulled over to the
side of the road. And I opened the door
to his van and my heart jumped because
on the ceiling of his van, he had taped
a picture of Jesus. And I knew this was
no coincidence. This was a God incident,
not a coincidence. And for a few
minutes, he just kind of passed the time
of day talking about the weather or
something like that, asking me where I
needed to go. And then he kind of paused
and broke the silence and said, "Friend,
can I ask you a question?" Well, I'm
waiting. I'm on the edge of my seat. I
said, 'Yes.' He said, "Have you ever
experienced Jesus Christ coming into
your heart?" I said, "No, but when can
I?" And he gave me this look of complete
surprise because in other words, his
look was communicating, "You're not
supposed to give in that quick. You're
supposed to discuss it for a while." And
uh he said, 'Well, you can come to our
prayer meeting tonight. I said, 'I don't
want to wait for a prayer meeting. I've
been praying all day long, praying and
reading the Bible, praying and reading
the Bible. And I said, I'm ready for the
encounter. He said, "Okay." And he
pulled over into the parking lot, the
nearest parking lot he came to. And God
was kind of sweet to work things out for
him and me both because it was the
parking lot of a different laundromat.
So his eyes got bright and he said,
"I'll be back in just a minute." And
took his clothes in and threw them in uh
to wash while we talked. And then uh we
discussed the Bible for a little while.
And I told him I had some hurdles and he
kept overriding them. I said, "I can
never believe the Bible is God's
inspired word written by 40 people over
1500 years. I can't believe that's God's
inspired word." And he just smiled at me
real big and said, "Don't worry about
that. Just try Jesus." And then I told
him another concern I had. I said, "Uh,
one thing about Christianity I have the
hardest time embracing." I said, "I
can't believe that there's only one
life. if I believe in reincarnation and
I'm sold on it. Nothing will make me
quit believing in reincarnation. Once
again, he gave me this big beaming smile
and he said, "Don't worry about that.
Just try Jesus." And he kept dismissing
all these intellectual arguments I had
against Christianity because he knew
that if I ever had an encounter with the
Lord Jesus that other things would sort
themselves out as I studied the word of
God and that the spirit of truth, the
Holy Spirit would lead me into all truth
once I was born again. So he knew that
was the issue to pursue and that was the
goal to pursue. So he persuaded me and I
said, "Man, I don't want to wait for a
prayer meeting." I said, "If I can find
Jesus, let's pray right now." So we went
around to the back of the van where
there was room and we both knelt down in
the back of the van. And I prayed a
simple prayer. I stumbled my way through
the prayer. In fact, my mind was kind of
screaming out against it in one way
because it seemed illogical to me to ask
him to wash my sins away when I believed
in karma as a yoga teacher. But I I was
willing I was willing to break through
the prison and now I see it as a prison
of that belief system that had held me
captive for a season. And I said,
"Jesus, if you're there and if you can
hear me, then I invite you to come into
my heart. Wash my sins away in your
blood. Be Lord of my life, and I
renounce all false religion and accept
only the truth." And you said, "I am the
truth, so I accept you into my life."
And then something happened. I felt the
spirit of God come into me. And it was
so real. It was so unmistakable. It was
so undeniable
that I knew I had to leave all the other
beliefs I'd held to for so long behind.
And of course, I rejoiced for a while,
praise God for a while. We discussed the
Bible a little bit longer, but then I
noticed the time and I said, "I've got
to get to my class." But I also knew
that I couldn't teach them yoga. I knew
that the two worldviews could not be
mixed. In fact, many Hindu leaders say
there's no Hinduism without yoga.
There's no yoga without Hinduism. And I
knew that the two approaches were
completely incompatible.
>> Now, Mike, before you move on, c could
you for people who have never
experienced what you just shared, you
know, like you in that time not ever
feeling the infilling of the Holy Spirit.
Spirit.
>> Oh, it was so wonderful. Can you spend a
little bit more time for those people
who may not know
um what give us a little bit more of
what you felt or what you saw what
happened in that moment?
>> Well, in that moment I had a warm
sensation in the deep part of my heart
in the depth of my spirit and more than
anything there was a inner knowing that
came with it that I had finally found
the truth. It was indescribable in some
ways that I just had this solid
understanding. Yes, I'm a child of God
now. I finally had become a child of God
in a supernatural sense. I believe all
human beings are children of God in a
natural sense. in the sense of the fact
that God created the whole world and all
people and all races and they're and
they're children of God after a natural
sense, but they still need to be born
again in order to become a part of the
family of God in a supernatural sense.
And that's what happened to me when he
prayed with me. When I asked Jesus, when
I invited him to be Lord of my life, I
encountered his reality. And you really
have to encounter his reality to be able
to understand it. There's no way of
really putting it into descriptive words
except it's not mental. It's not
emotional alone. It certainly affects
you mentally. It affects you
emotionally, but it's spiritual. It's a
supernatural encounter where you know
I'm home. I've finally come back to my
heavenly father and we're finally one
again after so many years of being
separate from God. And uh it's a
wonderful feeling and it's not it's not
like the thing you seek for in yoga
which is some kind of awakening
uh in the sense of a a spiritual power
being awakened within you so that you
have this level of consciousness that
you've never achieved before. It's not
that mechanical. It's not that it's not
that um impersonal. if you would please.
Uh because it was a very personal
connection with my heavenly father and
it was so real. I knew that I had to
announce it to my class. And so I asked
the guy who won me to the Lord to go
with me cuz I was this was also new to
me. I needed some help. And I stood up
in front of my students and said, uh,
I'm sorry to announce this, but I'm
happy to announce this, that I have
misled you in what I've taught you all
the time you've been coming to my
classes and I've just discovered that
Jesus is the only way and all religions
will not rel lead you to God and
meditation will not lead you to a
conscious awareness of God. I said,
you've got to accept Jesus as your Lord
and Savior. Well, most of my students
looked at me with complete shock because
they did not believe that their guru had
become a Jesus freak in their
terminology. And yet
there was no way the two worldviews
could mix because there's such
differences. And I'll go into the
differences more in just a little bit.
But I went back to all my yoga classes
that uh in that area that I had been
teaching. And that same week I shut down
my yoga ashroom, dismissed all my
classes. Most of my main students became
Christians also. And that was the
beginning of my journey in Christianity.
And I went and joined a Christian
commune in Central Florida where there
were a number o of others that lived and
and and studied the Bible on a constant
basis. We all had day jobs, but then
we'd have prayer meetings at night at
7:00 that would always last till about
midnight. And we would study the word
intently and passionately to understand
the word of God. But it began to
dismantle my belief system. And
strangely as I went through, and by
dismantling I mean that in a good way.
All the former beliefs I had held
started being challenged by the truth
that I was being introduced to.
And I might mention a few ways. For
instance, um we would chant that mantra
over and over again. And other mantras
like the word. Uh that's a common chant
that people use. Uh and it's a triune
sounding word when you get into the
depth of the explanation of what the
word means. It's uh an invocation to the
three primary gods in Hinduism which are
Brahma the creator god, Vishnu the
preserver god and Shiva the destroyer
god. And each sound a U m is supposed to
be an invocation to one of those gods to
come and manifest in your life and in
your body and in your spirit. And a lot
of people don't realize that word.
>> And Mike, just to clarify, when you say,
are you talking about when people are
like um or they
>> Yeah. Yeah. in a yoga class when they
say the word m uh actually the belief is
that that was the first word
>> accompanying the manifestation of the
universe that came forth from the
godhead. So it's like the primordial
sound and when you chant the word m
you're going back to your original
source and that enables you to
experience this higher level of
consciousness and incidentally
that level of consciousness is called
god consciousness in uh Hinduism and new
age spirituality and yet not all Hindus
believe this but many Hindus believe
that means a conscious awareness that
you are God or you are a manifestation
of God along with every other human
being which now I see as the antithesis
of the truth. You can't get as far away
from truth as that. That's as far away
from what's right and real as you can be
because we are not God. We are not
manifestations of God. And yet that's
what realization you're supposed to come
to when you achieve the highest state of
meditation in yoga. In fact, I mentioned
a while ago that I would eventually come
back to this thought. The whole goal of
yoga was the awakening of the condalini.
Now, what is that? That's completely a
foreign term to a lot of people, but the
word condolini means serpent power. And
it's envisioned by those who embrace a
yoga worldview, a Hindu worldview that
there is a latent energy at the base of
the spine that is coiled like a serpent
at rest within every human being. And
that is the divine essence according to
Hindu teaching. That is the divine
essence within every human being. And
through the asenas, through the
pranayyama, through the mantra yoga, the
chanting and mantras that is awakened.
And incidentally, I need to add a
conclusion that I didn't bring out when
I was talking about the mantras we used
to chant. Jesus said in his first
discourse, the sermon on the mount, "Use
not vain repetitions like the heathen
do, for they believe that they'll be
heard for their much speaking." And so
that kind of jarred me when I first
encountered those words. Do not use vain
repetition. I thought, why? Because it's
treating God in a very mechanical way.
You would never approach a fellow human
being by saying the same sentence over
and over and over again for a half hour,
for an hour, for two hours in a monotone
fashion. It would not be long before
that person would leave your presence
and think you'd gone completely crazy.
To try and communicate that way and to
approach God that way, I believe is an
insult to the intelligence of God. is
treating God like a force, not like a
person. Because real prayer is
communication with God in a personal
relationship, not manipulation of God by
the right incantation. And that's what a
mantra is supposed to do. You're
manipulating the force to do what you
want it to do because of your secret
words that you're using in mantrlike
fashion, which I believe is wrong. I
believe it's a wrong approach to God
altogether. And Jesus said to the woman
at the well
that true worshippers worship the father
in spirit and in truth. For the father
seeks such to worship him. And one of
the ways we worship God in truth is to
use correct methods in approaching him.
I believe to worship God in truth means
to worship him sincerely, to worship him
honestly, to worship him using correct
methods, and to worship him with the
right revelation of his nature and the
right understanding of the correct
approach to God. Five things you've got
to do to really worship God in truth.
Jesus never told the woman at the well
she was not a worshshiper but he said a
true worshipper will worship the father
in spirit and truth. And so there are
many Hindus that are very sincere in
worshiping God. There are many newagers
that are very sincere, many Muslims that
are very sincere in worshiping God. I do
not deny that fact that they are
worshippers. But to be a true worshipper
that connects with the father, that
communes with the father, that becomes
one with the father, we have to use true
methods. And so a lot of these things
got sorted out for me. Uh because well,
it's kind of strange, but because of a
statement my former guru made, it made
me start re-evaluating all these issues.
He said during one of his teachings that
Jesus was an avatar.
Now of course Hindus believe there have
been many avatars and the word avatar
means an incarnation of God on earth. I
know now it means a representation uh of
a person online in a game or a social
media platform and they have an avatar.
It's a representative image. Well, they
draw that whether they know it or not
from Hinduism, which taught that God has
had many forms that he's assumed in
visiting this world. And Jesus, of
course, could be one of many. But this
is the clincher. The guru I studied
under said Jesus was an avatar. And
because he was an avatar, he could only
speak the truth. Well, after my initial
encounter with the Lord, I started
pondering that. I thought, well, if
Jesus could only speak the truth,
then I need to inspect what he taught.
And as I inspected what he taught, it
started showing me that so much was
completely contrary to what the guru
taught. For instance, my guru taught
that Jesus was an illegitimate child.
That God could never be so personal as
to overshadow a virgin and plant a seed
of life within her womb. And yet the
whole story of Jesus communicates
irrefutably that he was born of a virgin
and the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary
and that that was formed of her inside
of her was the son of God. So there is a
breach between the guru's teaching and
what the Bible says and what Jesus
taught. And then of course the guru I
studied under many times referenced the
need to work out our negative karma that
the only way to escape the cycle of
rebirth which according to Hinduism can
take place over a million times over a
million incarnations into human forms in
this world. And in order to escape this
cycle of rebirth,
uh then you've got to somehow deal with
all your negative karma and and you've
got to have only a clean slate, no
negative karma whatsoever, and then
you're released to uh ascend to a higher
state spiritually.
Well, Jesus didn't talk about us getting
rid of negative karma, which is a
self-achieved salvation. That's you
becoming good enough to earn some kind
of transcendent state. But he said as he
passed the cup at the last supper,
listen to his words. He said, "This is
the cup of the new testament in my
blood. my blood which is shed for many
for the remission of sins. So Jesus
taught that the shedding of his blood
would be the means by which sin is
remitted. That means there's no karma if
there was such a thing. And now I
believe uh quite differently that the
that karma and reincarnation are false ideas.
ideas.
reincarnation and I and I have a a
chapter in my book instantly I would
urge people to get my book in search of
the true light because I deal with a lot
of these issues in great depth and in
there is a section where I give 13
reasons I no longer believe in
reincarnation and I don't believe in it
anymore. Uh, and there's a lot of
directions I could go to try and support
that statement, but one of the main
reasons is uh, salvation is not
self-achieved. Salvation is not
something you can work for. It's a gift
that comes from God. Ephesians 2:8 says,
"By grace you are saved through faith,
and that not of yourselves. It is the
gift of God, not of works, lest any man
should boast." So none of us can earn a
relationship with God or earn eternal
life by our own efforts. And there's a
lot of other reasons I don't believe in
reincarnation anymore.
One of uh of the main reasons is it
decreases the value of every human
being. Because if you've got a bad life
with a bunch of bad situations, well
then that's just a discardable life of
hundreds of thousands of lives and that
you're going to evolve in new
incarnations, new human beings that will
get you closer to the goal of finally
being released from the bondage of a
personality, a human personality. Now,
think of this. If God on an ultimate
level is
a person impersonal God as Hinduism
teaches, if God on an ultimate level is
an impersonal force, then we on an
ultimate level to go back to Godhead
become impersonal. So we shed all of our personalities
personalities
as human beings and blend in with some
kind of superal supernatural force that
is omniscient omnipresent
utter bliss etc. But we lose our
personality in the process. Well,
Christianity approaches it completely
different because in Christianity, the
individual has eternal value, infinite
value. And each individual is destined
not for reincarnation but for resurrection.
resurrection.
And if we receive Jesus as our Lord and
Savior, Jesus himself promised
resurrection. He did not believe in
reincarnation. He believed in
resurrection. And again, my guru's
statement came back to my mind when I
was studying this contrast. He said
Jesus was an avatar. So everything he
said had to be true. And yet Jesus said
in John chapter 5, he he he said uh he
that believes on me, though he were
dead, yet shall he live. And and and he
also said, I will raise him up at the
last day. And John chapter 11, he said,
I am the resurrection and the life. And
he who believes on me, though he were
dead, yet shall he live. So he taught
the resurrection of these physical
bodies from the dust. Even if it goes
totally back to corruption, that's no
limitation to God. If he created Adam
from dust in the beginning, he can
create us eternal and glorified from the
basic dustlike remains that uh are left
over from our bodies. And that's God's
pattern. That's the biblical pattern.
And so that was an area that I knew uh
Jesus differed in. And another very
important issue, another very very
important issue is this. As a yoga
teacher, I believed in pantheism. I
believed that everything had a divine
essence and everything was an emanation
out of the godhead. and the material
world around us is all an illusion and
it's all going to return back to Godhead
one day. That was my belief back then
when I was a yoga teacher. However, if
you believe
that then like Daoism, which is ancient
Chinese religion, then you have to
attribute evil and good, darkness and
light to the godhead. Because if
everything is God, then God is both evil
and God is good as well. God is both
darkness and light. And that's what the
yin-yang symbol, in fact, if you're
unfamiliar with it, that symbol is on
the cover here. That's the symbol of Dowoism,
Dowoism,
uh, ancient Chinese religion, and it's
representative of the idea, and let me
insert this, that, and the way they came
to that conclusion is that this world is
full of dualism. You have mountains and
valleys. You have joy and sorrow. You
have purity and corruption. You have
male and female. You have life and
death. You have you have all these
dualities we deal with every single day
in this world. And so the assumption
in Dowoism is that because the creation
is full of dualities, whatever brought
it forth into being must have a dual
nature as well. Because you have evil
and good, darkness and light in this
world. Then whatever source brought
forth this universe must have evil and
good, darkness and light. But that
taints the godhead. That accuses God
with evil in his nature, which is
absolutely false. The only way God can
be exempt from that is if God exists
apart from the creation. And if God
exists apart from the creation, then the
evil that is here cannot be attributed
to him. See, and that's a very very
important point because the Bible says
God is light and in him is no darkness
at all. And that God is just and in him
there is no injustice. So if God is
separate from the creation, then we have
to be reunited with him. It's not an
awakening. Now I told you about the
condundalini. Let me continue with
what's supposed to happen. When you
meditate on this thing they call the
serpent power. And really that should
have put up a red flag in my mind
immediately because I knew enough about
the Bible growing up to know that a
serpent is symbolic of evil. A serpent
is symbolic of that which is satanic.
And yet they call it the serpent power
in Hinduism.
And that through meditation, through the
chanting and mantras, through the
breathing exercises, through the asas,
the physical exercises, that power that
is latent and dormant at the base of the
spine is like a serpent awakes to
strike. It awakes and travels up through
the spine. Not really the physical
spine, but the same basic location. and
it travels up through you to what they
term and I don't believe in these
concepts anymore the third eye and the
crown chakra and that's when this this
inner presence or essence of divinity
becomes one with Shiva or becomes one
with the oversoul becomes one with
Brahman and you go out into God
consciousness and that's your spiritual
awakening when the serpent power is
awakened within you. Well, I believe now
that that is a very dark thing and there
are people who have experienced quote
unquote condundalini awakenings. uh
according to the gurus I studied under
they said if this ever happens to you
prematurely it can drive you insane or
it can awaken dark occultic powers in
you that will be unmanageable
and since the time of my conversion I
have searched the Bible from one cover
to the next and I've never found a
person in the Bible that ever had an
encounter with the true God that went
insane as a result or that had the
stirring up of dark occultic powers. As
a result, it only
it only brings forth fullness and
completion and wholeness in a person's
life. It doesn't result in a fractured
mind or a fractured personality that is
subject to these dark kind of forces.
And so that leads me all the more to
know and I do absolutely know that the
power that is unleashed in meditation is
not the true spirit of God. It's an
impersonating spirit. It's a demonic
spirit that uh that gives you the sense
that you're entering into some kind of
white light or entering into some kind
of higher consciousness. But it's a
spiritual delusion. And uh only
encountering Jesus would convince a
person of that. So there you have it.
You have some of the differences. Jesus
also advocated the ten commandments. He
he told someone who came to him, "What
can I do to be saved?" He said, "Keep
the commandments." Well, the first two
commandments are, "I am the Lord your
God. You shall have no other gods before
me." Well, wait a second. and I believed
in all these deities and yet he said you
shall have no other gods before me. And
he said you shall not make any graven
images. Well, in Hinduism they have all
kinds of idols and images that are
representations of God that they bow
before. They put fruit and flowers and
incense in front of those idols. And
Jesus advocated
the commandments to speak against those
practices. So that was a complete break
with the worldview that I embraced as a
yoga teacher and I knew that the Bible
was the source of truth after that. And
I just cannot overemphasize
that uh it's not unloving, it's not
uncompassionate to say there's one way,
but it's very loving and very
compassionate. Not because I'm pitting
myself against those who believe
differently. I'm not trying to argue my
case and prove you wrong. I'm lovingly
out of the depth of my heart pleading
with you, open your heart just like I
did because you'll find out that Jesus
really is the Messiah. He really rose
from the dead. Buddha died of food
poisoning at the age of 80 and never
came out of the grave. And as far as we
know, well, supposedly his remains have
been scattered in shrines all over India
and outside of India, too. But he's
never come back from that state.
However, Jesus died a much more brutal
and terrible death than food poisoning.
And yet, 3 days later, he arose from the
dead and proved himself alive by
appearing to his disciples. So, that's a
completely different approach. And I
think it's important to see that because
they're not compatible. You can't say,
"Well, Jesus
was one of many Christs. Jesus was one
of many ascended masters." Well, then
why? If he was only capable of teaching
the truth, did he teach resurrection
instead of reincarnation?
And of course there's many arguments
that people offer or many ideas they
offer to try and get around that. But
his worldview was unique in itself. And
his worldview is what works because it
brings completion and wholeness into our lives.
lives.
Mike, what do you We're in a whole
different time today where uh from
1975 to 2025,
this has only increased
uh the popularity of yoga
>> and new age uh religions and
>> uh what do you make all of this today as
you've gone and spent time with the Lord
and reflecting on your testimony and all
of the things that you did at one time
and uh what do you make out of what's
happening in today's time? Well, I I do
believe and this might sound extreme to
some people, but I do believe the yoga
movement that promotes the idea of the
unity of all religions
is a precursor of the antichrist because
the antichrist will be a unifying
individual that will unify the world
politically and financially through the
world banking system, politically
through the new world order and the
antichrist will unify the world
spiritually and religiously through the
new age movement. And incidentally, I
probably should talk a little bit about
the new age movement and how it even
gets that name because that's an
interesting thing. So uh if if you've
got a milder presentation of the idea
that all religions are one in the form
of a yoga studio where people go and do
yoga postures to uh to just relax and
get some peace of mind and meditate a
little bit to be able to face life
better is preparing them for an
individual that will come into the world
and claim that he's God that he's the
Messiah. the coming world teacher. And
the thing is almost all religions have
in their forecast for the future some
type of messiah-like figure who is
supposed to come. Uh the uh the Buddha
uh the oh I I don't remember the name of
it right now. Uh but the there's a
supreme Buddha that is supposed to come
in the future. And then there's other
religious leaders. Well, the Immadi uh
in Islam is supposed to be the leader
that is to come. So, this person will
supposedly blend all those roles
together into a one world religion. And
I believe that's why there's such a
surge of interest in yoga and meditation
because it's preparing people's minds
and hearts for something more intense.
>> And and can you talk about the the new
age? And you said you had some
information on that,
>> right? Well, yeah, I thought this would
be good. Uh when I was a yoga teacher, I
used to read uh I used to read the
Aquarian gospel.
And the Aquarian gospel was supposedly a
gospel that unveiled the secret
teachings of Jesus that were new age and
far eastern in essence. But the word
Aquarian comes from an astrolog
astrological idea because supposedly
according to my guru's teachings and the
teachings of many people we are on the
cusp of a new age and see astrology teaches
teaches
that the sun passes through 12 houses as
it circuits the earth and of course is
based on a false view of the solar
system. So now it's symbolic in essence.
It's not scientific in essence because
originally they thought the sun did
revolve around the earth but of course
it's been discovered that no uh the
earth revolves around the sun but still
the basis of astrology is that the sun
passes through 12 houses and each one of
those houses is an age that lasts about
2200 years and that we are in the
Piscian age right now which is an age of
intellectual development an age of
mechanical advancement and scientific
advancement in the world. But there's
still a lot of problems like hunger and
war and uh racism and things like that.
But that we are on the cusp of a new age
called the Aquarian age. And the
Aquarian age is supposedly a time when
all humanity will be awakened to God
consciousness and it will become like a
heaven on earth existence and peace will
reign in the world. there'll be no more
war and basic problems like sickness and
disease will be done away with and
racism will be no more and uh and the
human race will just be living on a
level of godlikeness as we've never seen
before. And so that's this this
passionate goal that many have to usher
us into the new age to usher us into the
new age. And that's what the new age
movement is all about. Some people who
profess the faith in new the new age
movement believe in a mass coming of
Christ. What do I mean by that? They
believe that the second coming of Christ
and they would envision the word Christ
as meaning something different than the
person of Jesus. But the second coming
of Christ is a h a blanket so to speak
of influence around the globe where
everyone is awakened to their Christ
nature and they walk in Christ
consciousness which is an awareness of
your own divinity and that's why we'll
be lifted to a whole new evolved state
as the human race.
Other newagers believe there will be an
actual individual that will be the world
teacher that will usher us in to the new
age. But both of them are heralding the
coming of this new astrological age. And
the one thing I don't like about
astrology more than anything else, and I
just did a podcast on seven reasons I do
not believe in astrology, but this is
one major one. It has what you call a
cyclical view of the future where the
Bible has a linear view of the future.
In astrology, we may come into the quote
unquote Aquarian age, but it won't be
too many thousand years before we start descending again into this horrible
descending again into this horrible state that humans once lived in. And
state that humans once lived in. And then it happens over and over and over
then it happens over and over and over again. A infinitum. It never stops.

Jesus Christ. And when he comes back again, he will establish the kingdom of

God on earth. And it will be heaven on earth conditions in that uh world to

the bulock. Can you imagine a world that's a repeat of Eden paradise again?
that's a repeat of Eden paradise again? But then beyond that is something called
But then beyond that is something called the new creation
the new creation where God creates a new heaven and a new
where God creates a new heaven and a new earth and a new creation that is
earth and a new creation that is absolute perfection. There's no repeat
absolute perfection. There's no repeat over and over and over again of cycles
over and over and over again of cycles that lead from good to bad, from good to
that lead from good to bad, from good to bad, from good to bad. Thank God for
bad, from good to bad. Thank God for that. Thank God for that.
Uh Mike, uh I'll ask this just just to just out of curiosity
just out of curiosity cuz you didn't mention it, but a lot of
cuz you didn't mention it, but a lot of times when so you just when when you
times when so you just when when you went into new age, you explained this

have the spirit of God coming into you. You have God's spirit coming into you.
You have God's spirit coming into you. And that creates a new heart which is

God said you receive a new heart at that point is because when your spirit and

cleanses you and makes you holy. So that God's Holy Spirit can do this. That's

the thing that completes us, and that is the presence of God.
Mike, who is Jesus to you? >> What a profound question. Who is Jesus
>> What a profound question. Who is Jesus to me? Well, number one, he's my savior,
to me? Well, number one, he's my savior, which means he saves me from sin. He
which means he saves me from sin. He saves me from the curse of death. He has
saves me from the curse of death. He has saved me from sickness and disease. He

me. So, he's my savior, but he's much more than that. He's entitled the good
more than that. He's entitled the good shepherd. And a shepherd leads his
shepherd. And a shepherd leads his sheep. And from the point I gave him my
sheep. And from the point I gave him my life, he began to lead me in the choices

very important to apply to yourself in a spiritual sense because when he came
spiritual sense because when he came into my heart, he resurrected my dead
into my heart, he resurrected my dead spirit. That's the dilemma of the human
spirit. That's the dilemma of the human race. The Bible says we are dead in
race. The Bible says we are dead in trespasses and sins. But Jesus says,
trespasses and sins. But Jesus says, "I'm the resurrection and I'm the life."
"I'm the resurrection and I'm the life." So he came in and resurrected this
So he came in and resurrected this spirit that was uh in in a sense in a

life instead of the death dealing effects of kin uh of sin and deception
effects of kin uh of sin and deception in the world. And those are just a few
in the world. And those are just a few things that Jesus is, but he's so much
things that Jesus is, but he's so much more. He said, "I am the bread of life,
more. He said, "I am the bread of life, and if any man eats of me, he shall live
and if any man eats of me, he shall live forever. And whatever you eat, you

your digestive system breaks it down into the nutrients. It's distributed to
into the nutrients. It's distributed to all your cells. it loses identity and
all your cells. it loses identity and becomes you. Well, when you eat of Jesus
becomes you. Well, when you eat of Jesus and he's the bread of life, then your
and he's the bread of life, then your identity and his identity are blended
identity and his identity are blended together as one. And bread exists to
together as one. And bread exists to satisfy the hunger of others. And when
satisfy the hunger of others. And when you really become a follower of Jesus,
you really become a follower of Jesus, you become one with the one who wants
you become one with the one who wants you to devote your life to satisfying
you to devote your life to satisfying the hunger of others for truth. So,
the hunger of others for truth. So, that's some of the things Jesus is to

that and they told me how to pray. This particular person told me, "If you have
