hi everyone my name is dr. Joseph hammer
and this is a choose-your-own-adventure
therapy exercise where you'll be in the
seat of a therapist and across from you
will be a client who's come in for help
with mental health concerns and your job
is to listen to what the client has to
say and then choose one of two
interventions one of two things to say
in response that you think will help
move the session in a productive
direction and by choosing the
intervention that's a little bit better
you will help progress the session
towards the end of the exercise when you
choose an intervention that's less of a
good fit you will be taken to a dead-end
response where you'll see the client
respond as they might if you chose that
intervention and then you can click to
move back to the prior video and try the
other intervention to see how that works
instead and your goal is to try and
select the better of the two
interventions to reach the very end of
the exercise which is about twenty
back-and-forth and that's the
choose-your-own-adventure aspect of the
exercise I have structured the exercise
such that it's my clinical judgment as
someone who teaches people to do therapy
regarding which intervention is better
than the other and I'm not always right
so there's plenty of room for debate
about what a good intervention versus
the less good intervention is but these
choices exemplify some of those best
practices in core counseling skills that
I teach my graduate students so good
