0:04 abisara the trist that's the poem we are
0:06 going to discuss today this is written
0:10 by gurudev rabindran Tor and uh this is
0:13 the first poem as far as rapid book is
0:16 concerned for ISC class 11 students now
0:18 gurudev rabindran tagor you would know
0:22 was the first non-european to be awarded
0:24 the Nobel Prize for literature in the
0:27 year 1913 for his collection of poems
0:29 called ganel okay and this particular
0:32 poem abisara celebrates the beauty of
0:36 Nature and the power of pure pure love
0:38 the power of pure love and the beauty of
0:40 nature please remember these phrases
0:42 because you could use them in your
0:55 now upagupta and VAB data these are the
0:57 two characters as far as this particular
1:01 poem abisara is concerned Gupta and vas dat
1:04 dat
1:07 spellings okay now upagupta was a
1:11 disciple of Lord Buddha okay so that was
1:14 his character and he is the symbol and
1:16 please remember these three words I've
1:18 written it down in the notes of
1:20 selflessness that is doing things for
1:22 others and not for
1:26 oneself knowledge and righteousness as
1:29 in doing the right thing basav data was
1:32 a dancing girl in fact I remember
1:36 reading amarra katas of VAV dat and this
1:37 there are many stories about their
1:40 encounters the two encounters the two
1:44 meetings Rondevu that uh rind tagor has
1:47 spoken about are a little different but
1:48 nevertheless these are the ones which
1:50 you need to deal with but if you're
1:52 interested you can always pick up a book
1:53 on basav Dat there are many available on
1:55 the net and you can go through it also
1:58 so VAB data was known to be pretty proud
2:02 of her elegance and fortune that aspect
2:04 does not really come out in this poem
2:05 but that is essentially known to be one
2:09 of the characteristics of basav dat now
2:11 the next question is where is this poem
2:14 based in the poem is based in matura
2:17 which is a town in utar Pradesh pretty
2:19 close to Delhi ma is known for its oil
2:22 refinery as the uh also associated with
2:26 Lord Krishna and this particular poem
2:28 essentially talks of two events first in
2:30 the month of August and then the
2:33 following year in the month of April
2:35 okay so a gap of about eight months
2:38 between the two events when upagupta and
2:41 wasab data meet okay please remember all
2:42 these little little pointers that I'm
2:44 telling you because that helps you kind
2:47 of place the poem in a particular
2:49 context so once the poem itself is not a
2:51 complex poem but you need to understand
2:53 the context of the poem the themes of
2:56 the poem which is what I am focusing on
3:01 now what happens St on a night in August
3:04 is when upagupta is sleeping somewhere
3:06 in matura and vadata is walking and
3:09 that's when she meets him okay and she's
3:11 Enchanted by his kind of looks by his
3:13 very Serene and good looks and she says
3:15 that this is not the place for you to
3:18 lie down please come to my home he says
3:20 no I won't and he says that he will come
3:22 to her when the time is ripe as in when
3:26 the time is right cut to April the
3:29 following year right the city of MAA is
3:31 celebrating the Festival of flows and
3:33 upagupta and most of them have gone to
3:35 the forest to celebrate that Festival
3:37 upagupta finds someone who is lying
3:40 outside the town on the outskirts of the
3:42 town right in the shadow of a mango
3:45 Grove and he finds that that is VAB data
3:48 and she has been thrown outside the town
3:50 because she's suffering from small pox
3:52 which is a contagious disease it could
3:53 spread to other people so they have
3:57 thrown her out of the uh town and um
4:00 upagupta at that point in time he shows
4:03 compassion and he tends to her and says
4:05 that the time has come for me to meet
4:08 you okay to visit you so the poem
4:11 essentially illustrates kindness empathy
4:15 and true love that when she needs him is
4:17 when upagupta says that I have come now
4:19 to visit you because the time is right
4:21 because you need someone to look after
4:24 you everyone else has discarded you but
4:27 I am here to help you I'm here to look
4:29 after you that is the reflection of
4:32 Truth true love
4:36 okay joke that
4:38 in you know I don't know if you're
4:39 familiar with bangaluru as a city and
4:40 there will be some students from
4:43 bangaluru out here bangaluru airport is
4:45 very far out from the city and the
4:48 traffic of Bengaluru is notorious right
4:49 so people say that in
4:53 Bengaluru someone X does not say I love
4:56 you to why if you want to show true love
4:58 to somebody in bangaluru you actually go
5:01 to receive them at the airport that that
5:04 is like the ultimate reflection of true
5:06 love as far as bangaloreans are
5:10 concerned just a joke no offense okay
5:14 now abisara in Sanskrit means meeting
5:19 okay trist uh means an appointment of
5:22 sorts okay abisara the trist uh trist
5:24 with Destiny javal Neu speech on the
5:27 midnight of August 1415 1947 delivered
5:30 in Parliament so trst with appointment
5:33 with Destiny here also meeting and
5:35 you're talking about a trist an
5:37 appointment okay and he has made an
5:39 appointment that I will come to you when
5:41 the time is right I hope you're
5:43 understanding the context
5:45 now uh the themes of the poem I've
5:47 written and I explain basically what
5:49 I've spoken about so far love and
5:51 longing for each other right then the
5:54 whole theme of spirituality right that
5:56 is the woman's Journey you know at one
5:58 time she was much sought after and one
6:02 time she's completely discarded right so
6:04 uh when she finally unites with upagupta
6:07 it symbolizes the union of an individual
6:09 and with the cosmic Consciousness in the
6:11 sense that you know it is also something
6:15 very spiritual okay um that is there and
6:17 the elements of nature which are there
6:19 in the second half of the poem and of
6:21 course the theme of compassion let's now
6:25 get started with the poem upagupta the
6:27 disciple of Buddha it's not written like
6:29 a typical poetry with with very heavy
6:31 words so you would find it pretty simple
6:34 to understand lay asleep on the Dust by
6:37 the city wall of Matra by means along
6:39 the wall by the city wall of Matra this
6:41 is pretty much almost like pros you
6:43 would find it very easy to understand
6:46 lamps were all outd doors were all shut
6:48 that is there were no lamps so it was
6:51 all dark the doors were all shut because
6:53 it was night time and stars were all
6:57 hidden by the murky Sky of August now
7:00 the murky means dark and very gloomy
7:02 kind of an atmosphere the stars were
7:04 hidden means there was some kind of a
7:06 cloud cover as a result of which no
7:10 stars were visible the doors were shut
7:13 indicates a sense of quiet okay uh
7:17 that's the atmosphere on this August
7:20 night or this night in
7:23 August whose feet were those tinkling
7:25 with anklets touching his breast of a
7:28 sudden now suddenly at that point in
7:30 time upagupta is awakened
7:32 because when the feet of a woman who is
7:37 wearing these kind of anklets you know
7:41 Bal okay uh and that woman was VAV data
7:44 that woman was VAV data a dancer who was
7:46 wearing those anklets which made a
7:49 tinkling kind of a sound he woke up
7:51 startled startled means there is a sense
7:53 of uh you know he's surprised he's kind
7:56 of surprised as a result of which aan
8:00 say he kind of gets up okay and
8:03 he woke up startled means he was in deep
8:05 Sleep only when you are in deep sleep
8:07 and someone comes and disturbs you you
8:09 are kind of startled kind of thing
8:11 because you're in deep Sleep deep sleep
8:13 who who are the kind of people who sleep
8:16 in deep Sleep who people who are at
8:18 peace with themselves if you are a very
8:20 troubl sought if you're having lot of
8:21 worries if you're having lot of
8:24 anxieties lot of tension your sleep is
8:25 likely to be disturbed you're likely to
8:27 see very disturbed dreams or you would
8:31 keep waking up right so you are if you
8:32 sleeping very peacefully it means you
8:34 are a man of Peace you have no worries
8:37 or anxieties in the world right and the
8:39 light from a woman's lap struck his
8:41 forgiving eyes now woman's lap so she's
8:44 holding a lamp and that sweat it kind of
8:47 struck his forgiving eyes forgiving eyes
8:49 also kind of conveys that you know he
8:51 did not kind of feel angry with her that
8:53 she had woken him up right so that is
8:55 again something which shows his
8:59 compassionate and kind uh hearted nature right
9:00 right
9:03 now basav data it was the dancing girl
9:06 starred with jewels clouded with a pale
9:09 blue mantle drunk with the wine of her
9:11 youth now there are a few important
9:15 words out here right uh mantle is a
9:18 loose sleeveless garment worn over the
9:20 clothes by women okay so that is the
9:22 meaning of the word mantle out here
9:25 right she was wearing a lot of jewelry
9:28 okay so you can imagine a dancing girl
9:30 who was wearing this kind of a mantle
9:32 who was adorned with a lot of jewelry
9:34 clouded with a pale blue mantle drunk
9:36 with the wine of her youth drunk with
9:39 the vne of her youth one conveys her
9:42 youthful Beauty and also Lively demeanor
9:44 you know there is something very
9:47 beautiful uh and very artistic about her
9:50 drunk kind of conveys a sense of Pride
9:52 you know you are like they say you know
9:55 he was drunk on power of his father you
9:57 know the chief Minister's son was drunk
9:59 on the power of his father that you know
10:00 father was Chief father is chief
10:03 minister so I can do anything and I can
10:04 kill people on the payment you know that
10:06 kind of a drunk I mean drunk does not
10:10 necessarily mean actual intoxication but
10:12 Intoxicated by the power that you feel
10:14 that you
10:18 know here she's drunk with the wine of
10:20 her youth that is she felt good and in a
10:24 sense a sense of Pride right uh that she
10:28 was indeed very young and very Lively
10:30 and beautiful okay so that is
10:32 something that's how you need to
10:35 interpret this she lowered her lamp and
10:38 saw the young face osterly beautiful now
10:42 she lowered her lamp to see upagupta and
10:44 she saw this young man's face who was
10:47 very handsome austerely beautiful auster
10:50 also means uh someone who is serious in
10:53 the way he looks you know simple and
10:56 serious in the way he looks austerely
10:58 beautiful and then they speak forgive me
11:01 young as atic now athetic is someone who
11:03 is a saint kind of a person a sadhu kind
11:06 of person so she apologizes to
11:09 him and athetic is also someone who
11:11 abstains from any kind of indulgence who
11:13 has kind of you
11:15 know you know he is kind of leading a
11:18 very saintly kind of Life practices self
11:20 discipline and usually it's associated
11:22 with a particular religion in this case
11:24 the Buddhist religion so forgive me so
11:28 she's kind of asked for apology U young
11:30 athetic said the woman graciously come
11:32 to my house the dusty Earth is not a fit
11:36 bed for you that this dusty place is not
11:39 where you should ideally sleep upagupta
11:43 declines her uh invitation woman go on
11:46 your way when the time is ripe I will
11:48 come to you so is that you go now go on
11:52 your way can be interpreted like you go
11:54 on your way that is you go to your home
11:56 go on your way can also be interpreted
11:58 like you continue doing what you are
12:00 doing I will come to you when the time
12:02 is right right so it can be interpreted
12:04 both literally that is saying that you
12:06 know you proceed where you are going
12:08 right now or in the metaphorical sense
12:11 you continue doing what you're doing I
12:13 will come to you only when the time is
12:16 Rip okay when the time is right when the
12:18 time is right I will definitely come to
12:21 you suddenly the Black Knight showed its
12:23 teeth in a flash of lightning okay now
12:25 showed its teeth it's almost
12:28 personification the Black Knight showed
12:32 its teeth means lightning when there
12:35 is it's almost like you know someone is
12:38 kind of flashing his teeth so in a St in
12:40 a flash of lightning so there is the
12:42 element what I spoke you told you about
12:45 the theme of nature both in terms of the
12:47 trees and the flowers in the later half
12:49 of the poem and in the first half of the
12:52 poem like this the storm growled another
12:55 way of personification grow is used for
12:58 wolves or dogs right but here it's been
13:01 used for the storm the the kind of you
13:04 know the acoustic effect growled from
13:06 the corner of the sky and the woman
13:09 trembled in fear right so she sees the
13:12 lightning she hears the sound and she
13:15 trembled in fear so you have the
13:18 personification uh poetic devices which
13:22 have been used and the branches of the
13:32 aching oh there are two lines which are
13:34 missing there are two lines which have
13:36 gone missing in this strangely let me
13:38 just look at the book so that in any
13:40 case you have the book right so you will
13:53 about 1
14:21 the next line is a year had not passed
14:23 it was the evening of a day in April in
14:25 the spring okay those are the two lines
14:27 which are missing in this particular
14:30 version very strangely the branches of
14:32 the Wayside trees were aching with
14:34 Blossom gay notes of the flute came
14:36 floating in the warm spring air from
14:40 afar afar means from far off so now the
14:42 poem has made a transition to 8 months
14:45 later to the month of April when it is
14:47 spring season right and what happens in
14:49 Spring season you find a variety of
14:52 flowers on the trees so the branches of
14:54 the trees are filled with flowers
14:56 conveying the beauty of the spring
14:58 season and what does spring convey
15:00 spring conveys freshness spring conveys
15:02 Beauty spring conveys new life it
15:06 conveys renewal of life and energy a
15:09 freshness okay uh so from a distance the
15:12 cheerful and gay Tunes lovely Tunes uh
15:15 from a flute could be heard so in mcqs
15:17 you could get questions like this which
15:20 is the instrument which has been uh
15:23 mentioned in this particular
15:25 poem the citizens had gone to the woods
15:27 to the Festival of flowers from the mid
15:30 Sky gazed the full moon on the Shadows
15:32 of the silent town so the citizen there
15:34 was the Festival of flowers which was
15:36 being celebrated so all of them had gone
15:38 to the forest to the woods means to the
15:42 Forest Area outside matura from the mid
15:44 Sky gaze the full moon on the Shadows of
15:48 the silent town so uh from the mid Sky
15:51 gaze the full moon so this time earlier
15:52 the moon could not be seen because it
15:55 was a dark sky no stars could be seen
15:59 but this time the full moon is seen um
16:01 the full moon is seen this time on the
16:03 Shadows of the silent town so on the
16:06 Shadows of the silent town you have the
16:09 reflection of the full moon the young
16:11 athetic was walking in the Lonely Street
16:14 earlier it was VAV data who was walking
16:18 and upagupta was sleeping this time VAB
16:21 data is sleeping while the athetic
16:23 upagupta is walking and he walks towards
16:26 her so the young athetic so you see the
16:27 difference and note the difference the
16:29 young atic was walking in the Lonely
16:32 Street why is it lonely because everyone
16:34 in the town has gone to the woods for
16:37 the Festival of flaws while over head
16:40 The Love Sick coils urged from the mango
16:42 branches their Sleepless plaint plaint
16:45 means complaint so the coils are singing
16:47 coil is always a bird which is
16:49 associated with singing with sweet voice
16:52 okay so it is and it is love sick it is
16:56 kind of talking and singing of love so
16:59 the coil which is a member of the C
17:02 family known for its singing and uh it
17:04 is singing of Love okay they were
17:06 singing their love six songs uh which
17:08 indicates unfulfilled desire pretty much
17:12 similar to basab data and upagupta and
17:14 the longing for the Beloved which is
17:16 precisely what vas data did not so
17:18 apparent in this particular poem but in
17:20 the larger stories of vas dat and
17:22 upagupta that is pretty much a theme of
17:24 longing for the Beloved that vas data
17:27 falls in love with upagupta the moment
17:29 he she sees him so upagupta walked out
17:31 of the city and stopped at the base of
17:34 the walls of the city passed through the
17:37 city Gates and stood at the base of the
17:40 rampart Rampart Rampart of the Red Fort
17:43 the walls of the fort so the bottom area
17:44 that's what is known I mean the area
17:46 next to the walls is known as the ramp
17:48 parts of the fort so it stood at the
17:51 ramp part what woman lay in the shadow
17:53 of the wall at his feet struck with the
17:55 black pestilence her body spotted with
17:58 SS hurly driven away from the town so he
18:01 he's kind of questioning are who is this
18:03 woman who has been driven away who kind
18:05 of lying at near the shadow of the wall
18:07 and struck with She's suffering from
18:12 small pox pestilence is a fatal epidemic
18:14 uh disease okay so her body has these
18:17 kind of source of small pox and she had
18:19 been driven away from the town to
18:22 prevent the spread of the disease hurly
18:25 driven away from the town the athetic
18:28 SAT by her side taking her head on her
18:34 SN so he took VAB dat's um head on his
18:38 lap okay and moisten her lips with water
18:40 gave her water to drink in order to wet
18:43 her lips smeared her body with balb balb
18:45 could be a sandalwood P because that's
18:48 what is normally used so uh he did that
18:51 to kind of ensure that you know it would
18:54 help her in some way or other as a
18:56 medication and at that point in time VAB
18:58 data who so weak that this time she's
19:01 not recognized this man who are you
19:03 merciful one asked the woman merciful
19:06 means someone who is showing Mercy as
19:08 opposed to the people of the Town who
19:11 had turned her out the time at last has
19:13 come to visit you and I am here replied
19:15 the young athetic that I had said that I
19:18 will visit you when the time is ripe and
19:20 the time has come now because at this
19:23 point in time is when you actually need
19:26 me and I'm here to be of some kind of
19:29 help to you so that's what op Gupta
19:31 replies now I've already mentioned some
19:33 of the poetic devices like
19:35 personification the alliteration gay
19:39 notes of a flute came floating FF uh
19:42 then the young athetic is repeated many
19:45 times so there is a thing of repetition
19:47 then U there is also the element of
19:49 force shadowing which has been used in
19:51 the sense that you know when the time is
19:54 right I will come for you which means
19:56 that you the moment he says it the first
19:58 time you know that in this poem there
19:59 will come a time when it actually comes
20:02 true when he comes for her when the time
20:04 is ripe so there is a sense element of
20:06 foreshadowing and that's one of the
20:08 literary devices which has been used by
20:10 rabindra tagor then symbolism the mango
20:13 tree which kind of symbolizes love coil
20:16 as a bird uh singing from the mango tree
20:19 about unfulfilled love again as a
20:22 symbolism of the love between upagupta
20:25 and vasata more from vasata side for
20:27 upagupta uh then of course a lot of
20:30 imagery has been used austerely
20:32 beautiful starred with jewels clouded
20:35 with a blue pale blue mantle all of them
20:38 kind of help you form an image of VAB
20:40 data in your mind similarly that of
20:43 upagupta but much more of vasad data it
20:45 kind of helps you form what kind of a
20:48 person she would have been um along with
20:51 this I would be giving you the logical
20:54 reasoning questions the long answers and
20:56 questions five marks and 10 marks also
20:59 the mcqs okay so once all the elements
21:01 are there that should help you with your
21:03 preparation uh for the examination as
21:05 far as abisara is concerned it's a
21:08 simple poem uh but the themes is what
21:10 you should be aware of and all the kind
21:12 of words the specific words that you
21:13 should use so once you go through my
21:15 question and answers and notes you would
21:17 find it pretty easy to do that okay T
