If you've watched Severance, you'll know
that the work is mysterious and
important. So, I thought it would be fun
to put together some of the most
interesting hidden details and clues
littered throughout season 2. Keep in
mind, I have a separate video covering
just the ending, which I'll leave a link
to, as well as the biggest theories
video coming out shortly. So, make sure
you've liked and subscribed. And
remember, I love you. Deleted
behindthe-scenes photos from Zufu's
Chinese restaurant in episode 206 show
an article for lawsuits against the
ether plant in Salt's neck. It states
that thousands complained of chronic
illnesses from the plant's toxins. Dethl
ether, which is the inhalent Cobell and
Hampton take, spell out the word deer.
And it's at Deers National Park that we
see this mummified sealed by the water.
It's possible this seal's death is the
result of poisonous toxins from
Saltseneck or other such
factories.Wendalyn, one of MDR's
replacements, has a white ball and
silhouette of herself, which suggests
these were perks from her old branch. On
Mark's first day back at Lumen, Mark W,
gets in an argument with Gwendalyn,
stating he hates the color pus and that
it makes him sick. They were purple. No,
they were pus. I know because it makes
me nauseous. The next day, she comes to
work wearing a Pew outfit. After Mark
gets off the elevator in episode 1,
we'll catch a glimpse of a mysterious
man in the hallway behind him. We don't
know who he is, but if you go to the
episode's IMDb page, we'll see that he's
credited as man in hallway. Daario has a
wooden figure instead of Mark's glass
one because the branch he came from was
very poor. Each with a face made of a
plate. A plate? We were very poor.
Interestingly enough, the file he's
working on is Moroka, which is not one
of the files associated with Gemma.
Allentown, Mark's first completed file,
is the hometown of Ben Stiller's wife.
We briefly see that one of Milchek's
drawers has a set of Japanese pruning
tools. That's for his bonsai tree he
keeps over here. The Kier Chronicle is
filled with all sorts of fun details.
For example, the year it was published
was 1893. However, there are
51,93 volumes. Assuming there's been a
volume for every day of the year, it
would put our current year at 2035. I
wouldn't look too deep into this
considering the entire page is
photoshopped and filled with
misinformation. The photo of the innies
was taken from President Eisenhower's
1960s trip to Brazil. There's an article
about the Baird Creek bandit. Bear Creek
is where Mark lives and is the name of a
former Lumen CEO. The bandit was known
to steal one valuable item from his
victims, which leads me to believe it
might be Coobel, who once stole Gemma's
candle from Mark's basement. But it
could also be Irv. As the article
states, police think the culprit could
have a military background. There's also
mention of Dr. Rick and Hale with a nod
to his book, The U YouU, which you can
actually download to read or listen as
an audio book. The painting Kier Pardons
his betrayers was created by illustrator
Danny Avelis, who in the severance
security office is listed as a Daniel A
in the CE department. He can also be
found on Irv's list of Lumen employees.
The newly designed Lumen break room is
filled with all sorts of fun posters
including I'm a frolic aaholic. Frolic
being one of Kier's four tempers and
another poster be ever merry. Beehive
was one of the systems functions found
in the security room. And in the UUR,
Ricken has a strange story about how he
never saw a natural beehive even though
he interned at a honey plant. The hang
in there poster is a nod to Dylan
locking down the overtime contingency in
season 1. The voice of the Lumen
building in the macro refinement video
is Keano Reeves, while the water tower
is voiced by SNL's Sarah Sherman. Kano
says Lumen operates in 206 countries
around the world. However, there are
only 195 recognized countries according
to the UN. However, this is open to
interpretation as definitions of what
defines a country can vary. You can kind
of tell Heli is actually Helena in
episode 1 because she doesn't know where
the on switch is on her computer. The
name of Hel's new file she starts in
2011 is Santa Mirror, the setting of
Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Although
this might be a stretch, the white rings
found on Gemma's Cold Harbor profile
look a bit like the grains of salt used
by Regabi during Mark's reintegration
process. Milchek's license plate reads
Ramedium Humminibus, which is Latin for
cure for mankind. This can also be found
on Mark's license plate, as well as an
abandoned factory in Salt's Neck. While
going around town to fire the Audi's,
Milch passes a bar where the band Deer's
brother plays. Deer's brother, of
course, being Kier. Deer Egan is an
anagram for AI generated. And Winter
Tide, the award given to Coobel and Miss
Wong, is an anagram for deer twin.
Pips's Diner is named after foreman
Lumen CEO Philip Egan, while Irv's
apartment is named after another Lumen
CEO Leonora Egan. Mark has two fish, one
blue and one red, symbolizing the
distinction between Inie and Audi. Every
locker number except Marks is taken from
the famous loss numbers 4 85 15 16 2342.
If you listen closely when Coobel nearly
runs over Mark, you can hear a Wilhelm [Music]
[Music]
scream. Milcheek tells the Audi's that
during the overtime contingency, their
bodies were taken over for 39 minutes,
which is roughly the runtime of the
season 1 finale. At Mamalian's
Nurturable, Wyatt asks to see if Heli
and Mark have pouches. A call back to
season one when Bert reveals to Dylan
that other departments fear MDR because
they might have kangaroo pouches. Like
they say, you all have pouches. The
cartoon that plays at Dylan's Audi's
house is an episode of Danger Mouse in
which the villain Baron Silus Greenback
shrinks himself to a microscopic size to
invade the brain of our hero. Kind of
like a severance chip. There's a picture
of a seascape, most likely Montalk, as
there are several references to it,
which mimics the se-scape theme of
Dylan's Audi's visitation suite. And
here's a nice Kier Egan doll with
Natalie proposing Ricken rewrite parts
of his book for the innies in 203. It's
very possible that Ricken had a hand in
writing Kier Egan's fourth appendix that
we see in 204. His house also has weird
goat sculptures, and we know Ricken has
an affinity for climbing without any
gear, much like a goat. There's a Gan's
College mug in Mark's basement. That's
where he worked as a professor and met
Gemma. The four colors of the wires
attached to Mark's head during
reintegration match the colors found in
the bins of his macro refinement
computer. Natalie refers to Mark as a
quote good egg. And considering all the
egg imagery in the show, it's not a
coincidence. Gemma will be seen eating a
raw egg in 207, Kier's favorite
breakfast. You know, he used to drink
three raw eggs and milk each morning.
His favorite breakfast. And Regabi asked
Mark to pick him up eggnog at the store.
The painting found on the Ortbo
introduction is Kier invites you to
drink of his water which features a
bunch of lakes which look a lot like the
Great Lakes. Water is very important in
the world of severance. There's a
literal water tower outside of Lumen and
articles about Lumen providing drinking
water to underdeveloped African nations.
The song that's heard before they press
play is a rendition of Kier Chosen One
Kir which Miss Coobel sang in season 1
and a version of which is played by the
choreography and marrynt marching band
in the finale. The acronym ORPO is also
an anagram for robot. How is this TV
getting power? No one knows. Miss Hong
plays the theramin, an instrument that
creates sound through wavelengths.
Wavelengths are what Regabi uses in the
reintegration process. Sarah Bach, who
plays Miss Hong, actually took Theamman
lessons to prepare for the role. When
Irv has a nightmare during the orbo,
we'll see the final name he's working
on, is Montalk, no doubt a nod to
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,
which prominently features this place.
The numbers that appear on screen are
517 and 4, which correspond to the name
Egan. And for a brief moment, you can
even see the numbers form a picture of
Hel's face. Episode 204 is the first we
hear the term Glasgow block mentioned.
However, the term Glasgow was also found
as one of the system functions in the
security room. In medicine, the Glasgow
coma scale is a system of measuring
one's responsiveness from completely
unresponsive to fully responsive. The
Audi's wear these Russian inspired
winter outfits. Russian culture plays
heavily in Gemma's life. As she's a
Russian literature professor in college,
there are Russian magnets on Mark's
fridge, and all the books in her room
are from Russian author Leo Toltoy.
Soviet era imagery also plays heavily
with the authoritarian control of Lumen.
The song Dr. Mau whistles in episode 205
is Gordon Lightfoot's The Wreck of the
Edmund Fitzgerald. All about the
mysterious final voyage of a freighter
that sank with the bodies of the crew
never being found. The dental supplies
he collects from O and D will eventually
be used on Miss Casey. However, with
there being a mouthwall in the
perpetuity wing, who is to say, these
aren't other Lumen test subjects. Lumen
has these pre-made bereavement mugs for
Mark, Heli, and Dylan, even though they
haven't died, which may suggest they
will sometime in the future, or they're
just on standby in the event they do.
The sign behind Dylan during Irv's
eulogy shows that Irv worked until
quarter 882. If you do the math, this
would mean Lumen was founded in the late
17 to early 1800s, which is decades
before Lumen even existed. Regabi finds
a necklace of Gemma's in Mark's
basement. The necklace we'll later see
her wearing at the fertility clinic in
episode 207. When Heli tells Mark that
she's breaking into the bathroom to see
Mark, it contrasts Mark breaking in to
see Hely in season 1. I'm coming in cuz
I'm coming in. The beers found in Mark's
fridge are called split log, just like
our characters minds are split in two.
In season 1, Miss Casey tells Mark that
his Audi can set up a tent in under
three minutes. In episode 206, we get to
see him show off this skill before doing
the deed with Heli. At Zufu Chinese
restaurant, Mark is given two fortune
cookies, but he only eats one. I like to
think one is for his innie and one for
his Audi. Fu in Chinese means father,
hinting that Mark is going to be a dad.
And the year this restaurant was
established was 1927, the same year the
Chinese Civil War began. I also found
that these trophies are for the Kier
regional racing pigeon club. Pigeon
racing involves pigeons being trained to
return home, which is what Mark
immediately does after this scene.
Pigeons are also controlled by an
external handler, much like Lumen's
control over our MDR employees. Bert
tells us he was led to Lumen by Jesus,
which is interesting because John
Touturo played a character named Jesus
in The Big Labowski. The machine that
takes blood from Gemma and Mark is from
Lumen. We'll also see Lumen has
connections to the fertility clinic as
well as a Dr. Mau cameo. Bootsman, the
name of the clinic, means boogeyman in
German. Although this is fairly obvious,
the flashbacks in 207 are all shot in
film to create what cinematographer
Jessica Lee Gier calls a separate
identity for our characters. The shot
where the camera goes from MDR to the
Watchers is all in camera and not VFX.
The cards Gemma got in the mail are the
same cards created by O and D that Dylan
found in season 1. The quilt in Mark and
Gemma's house is the same one Mark will
use to cover his face when trying to
imprint UV light onto his eyes. In the
Christmas room of the testing floor, we
see Gemma writing rather poorly, I might
add, with her left hand. While at the
fertility clinic, she writes with her
right. The room is also furnished with
various 3D printed objects from O and D.
Printed objects like the instruments
played by the marching band. The real
life town that stands in for Salt's Neck
is located in Newf Finland, Canada, and
is also a town that faced hardship from
a factory closing. Coobel lives
near a peninsula called the Nine, named
after Lumen's nine core values. The
mascot for the Myrtle Egan school Coobel
went to are the fighting kids. Kids are
the term used for baby goats. We see
various Myrtle Egan school locations
like the one in Kier, and this is likely
where Miss Wong went. has a
similar white night gown and has a
shrine to Kier, just like Coobel at her
home. Here's a plate depicting Mark
being pushed down by two women, one
wearing Audi red and the other in blue.
They wear black hats suggesting they are
controlled by Lumen. Black is the color
that symbolizes Lumen management as
we'll see Hang and Milchek with black
key cards. And both Drummond and Jame
almost always wear black. More egg
symbolism, a metaphor for both the
splitting of one's brain and fertility.
Jame remarks that he wishes she took it
raw. And there is one thing she likes
taking bra, and that's Mark. It's also
customary not to eat eggs with
silverware as the sulfur from the eggs
can tarnish the silver and give the eggs
a bad taste. The cold harbor ID number
is the same as helies. This hasn't been
answered in the show, but I'll get more
into this in my theory video. The ring
that in Dylan makes for Gretchen is from
one of his beloved finger traps. The
last words Bert says to Irv are
bonvoyage, the same words his Audi said
in his retirement video. Miss Wong is
being sent to the Gunnel Egan Center for
Empathy and Spalbart. In the finale, one
of the songs the marching band plays is
the ballad of Ambrose and Gunnel. So, we
can assume Gunnel was Ambrose's wife.
The madeup story of Cabel taking in a
Marsha White to the birthing center is
straight from an episode of the Twilight
Zone. It's about mannequins who come
alive to live amongst humans. If you
want a full breakdown of that, do check
out my episode 209 video. The existence
of a choreography and marrynt department
hints that the four temper dancers from
Dylan's waffle party in season 1 came
from that department. James tells Heli
that he quote sireired many children in
the shadows. The word sire was also used
by Dr. Mau to Gemma saying that Mark
will benefit from the world she is
siring. Of course, there are a lot more
details in the final episode like the
significance of the equator and meaning
of the new painting, but those are
covered in my season 2 ending explained
video, which I'll leave a link to in the
description below. So, now I turn it
over to you. What are your favorite
details, hidden clues, and symbolism
from season 2? I want to hear your
thoughts in the comments below. Thanks
