hi everyone my name is Ramon and today
we're going to be talking about how to
build a skincare routine from the basics
101 about me my name is Ramon once again
I'm from Puerto Rico I'm a cosmetic
scientist and chemist product developer
and aesthetician so I just love skincare
love talking products love talking
ingredients I actually started in food
science before jumping into Cosmetics um
I've worked at a raw material
manufacturer where I worked in skincare
sunare and color Cosmetics which beans
makeup um and also formulating with a
focus in naturality and then I'm
actually currently working on my
master's degree in cosmetic science as
well so in today's presentation we're
going to be talking about what are the
skincare routine fundamentals and where
does skin type come into that when do I
start adding more into my routine as
well as ingredient highlights to help
kind of steer you in the right direction
based off what it is you're trying to
Target with your skincare concerns and
then com common skincare routine
misconceptions so what are the
fundamentals what is the most basic
building blocks of a good skincare
routine is three steps it is a good
cleanser it's a good moisturizer and the
all important
sunscreen and with those three steps the
fundamental Am Pm routine is really
cleanse in the morning if you feel fit
you don't even need to cleanse in the
morning and then obviously have the
sunscreen as your last step then at
night wash the day away with a good
cleanse and then just moisturize make
sure that you're sealing in that
hydration and that is the most Bare
Bones routine when it comes to that
basic routine though it's very easy to
still have a very well-rounded routine
just because you have such few products
doesn't mean it's not going to be an
effective routine you're not going to be
able to Target your specific skincare
concerns but some things to consider
when it comes to those three products is
textures do you prefer more lightweight
textures do you love really rich very
nourishing textures when it comes to the
leave on products so the the ones that
you're leaving on your skin that
sunscreen that
moisturizer what actives are potentially
included in those to give you a more
thorough benefit give you that more
well-rounded routine so moisturizer
doesn't have to be just a simple
moisturizer and you can actually do a
lot with sunscreens Beyond just sun
protection and then the one thing that's
really going to influence what direction
you're steering your skincare routine is
what are your skin goals what is it
you're trying to achieve with this
skincare routine so let's talk skin
types cuz I mentioned the very Bare
Bones routine and I didn't talk skin
types and how that fits into there
there's the two main skin types and I
just want to say as well skin types is a
very subjective thing because there can
be how your skin tends to on an everyday
basis act or react or behave but then
certain things happen your external
environment might change your the way
you're treating your skin might affect
how it feels you're not going to be an
exact skin type basically because
sometimes your skin needs different
things you just got to listen to what
your skin is saying so the two basic
skin types we're going to talk about
today are oily skin and dry skin when it
comes to oily skin or oily leaning the
concerns around that tend to be
pigmentation blemishes and visible pores
and again these are just generalizations
here you can have dry skin and suffer
from some of these oily skin specific
concerns and vice versa and then with
dry skin the things we really see around
that is a very tight feeling you might
notice your fine lines tend to be a
little bit more noticeable maybe
exaggerated and then flaky skin really
dry flaky skin so when it comes to how
you then shape your skincare routine
these are concerns that you might want
to be targeting so let's talk about a
skincare routine for oily skin going
back to those three Basics you can see
the main highlights we're looking at are
something lightweight something non-
greasy something non shiny Matt is a
very popular demand when it comes to
developing formulating oily skin
products you can see the the three steps
here and what you can kind of look for
if you're trying to build that routine
for a cleanser you want a more gel or
foaming cleanser you might want to have
actives in there too specifically
targeting those oily skin concerns we're
talking a benzil peroxide based cleanser
a salicylic acid or BHA cleanser or
maybe something with NI cinnamide in it
those tend to Target those oily skin
concerns then in the morning you can
just top that up with a sunscreen right
afterwards when it comes to sunscreens
for oily skin we're looking at a
lightweight gel or gel cream texture or
maybe even a milk something light and
runny I know ethanol tends to be
demonized by more conservative
approaches but in sunscreen formulations
ethanol is a really great ingredient to
have because it helps give a kind of a
cooling effects when you apply it on the
skin as that ethanol evaporates out
ethanol is volatile so it's not staying
on the skin on top of that it allows
your sunscreens to be a lot more
lightweight feeling and when it's a
sunscreen sunscreens have natural film
not natural but film forming abilities
are a very inherent thing in a sunscreen
and that also lends itself to a
moisturizing effect therefore any
negative effect you might get from
ethanol instantly mitigated by the
hydrating and moisturizing ingredients
in your sunscreen and then we look at
marketing and you see oilfree dry touch
for a lot of oily skin focused
sunscreens it might not be the case
where it's actually dry touch it's
actually matte but those types of
formulas or those marketing claims tend
to be favored towards oily skin so while
it might not be a matte matte sunscreen
it might not be completely shine free
those tend to have a lighter feeling
texture or be just more suitable for
oily skin and then you also tend to
notice that oily skin sunscreens are
more humant focused they tend to be more
hydrating again going back to that gel
gel cream texture so that's your am
routine when it comes to night time
again we're just cleansing the day off
that sunscreen breaking down that makeup
and then we're finishing that routine
with a sunscreen or sorry with a
moisturizer at at night time no
sunscreen at night um and those PM
moisturizers for oily skin again gel or
gel cream texture very lightweight
humant Focus again very hydrating and
then those also tend to be oilfree for
some of the occlusives and spreadability
benefits we're looking at silicones
which are a really really good skincare
ingredient I feel like those are also
very demonized right now but you have
volatile silicone so again those
evaporate out or you could tend to have
just nourishing occlusive silicon but
that still feel very lightweight on the
skin and really good spreadability and
now for dry skin again same three steps
but we're looking at a very different
set of claims a very different purpose
we want a dry skin routine to be more
nourishing to feel more rich and to
impart more glow on the skin for a
cleanser we tend to look for milky or
creamy cleansers and we also tend to see
non-f foaming for these types of
cleansers and when it comes to what
those cleansers can contain in terms of
extras we're looking at conditioning
ingredients also fatty alcohols oils
ceramides to kind of support skin
moisturization these are like things
that mimic the natural lipids in the
Skin Barrier or just help to support
them in reducing water loss keeping the skin
skin
moisturized and then in the morning
again just a sunscreen after that very
different texture we're looking at
lotions we're looking at creams we want
these sunscreens to have oils Butters
waxes to help moisturize give that nice
rich feel on the skin help to
essentially smooth down the skin and
that's the emole benefit we see from
these ingredients emolion give good slip
they smooth down the skin so that the
skin looks more glowy feels more soft
and we're looking at claims around
moisturizing dewy to get that glow and
then at night sorry real quick actually
for day time if you have very dry skin
and you find it is necessary you can
layer a Moisturizer in a sunscreen
sunscreen always goes last but when you
really want that extra moisturization
that extra hydration it is okay to layer
a moisturizer underneath your sunscreen
in the morning if you find it fit um
it's just for oily skin we don't we
don't tend to do that we tend to keep it
simple but for night time now again
cleanse cleanse everything away and then
go in with a moisturizer to just layer
all the hydration in for nighttime again
different texture for that moisturizer
we're looking at a lotion cream or a
balm something very occlusive something
very rich occlusive just means it locks
in the hydration a lot better um and
then we're looking for something that's
very lipid Rich things that are oilbased
again oils Butters waxes fatty alcohols
cholesterol ceramides those three that I
just mentioned fat fatty alcohols
cholesterol ceramides those are the
things that generally make up the Skin
Barrier so with that topically applied
on top you're really just supporting
what the Skin Barrier naturally does
reducing that trans epidermal water loss
and keeping that skin really moisturized
we want that emolient feel as well so
that's when you see all those oils and
butters in there and you're going to get
a much richer feeling
moisturizer so quick routine wrapup to
kind of wrap everything up that we just
mentioned listen to your skin just
because you tend to lean more oily or
tend to lean more dry sometimes your
skin switches up and you really have to
tailor on a day-to-day basis how you
treat your skin what you do to your skin
just to make sure that you are giving it
what it needs fragrance versus fragrance
free this is a really really hot topic
I'm Pro fragrance and that's only just
because I understand there's that extra
sensory element some people do want from
their skincare products unless you are
already sensitive to fragrant compounds
it's not something you necessarily need
to avoid and from a product development
standpoint that's still a big factor
that we consider because consumers still
do want those fragrance they want that
nice sensory experience it just
sometimes gives you that extra level of
I love using this product because it
also smells delicious barrier care is
priority and with that what I mean is
sometimes keeping it simple and really
focusing on skin moisturization
hydration making sure your Skin Barrier
is nicely nourished and tap and
supported is going to be fundamental to
add anything else into your routine just
to make sure all those extra actives and
ingredients are able to work a lot more
effectively a compromised barrier is
essentially an injured Skin Barrier and
so just making sure your Skin Barrier is
healthy it's happy is going to be very
pivotal to better achieve your skin
goals sometimes less is more and by that
I mean you don't have to do 12,000 steps
I personally am very Pro intensive
routine as a self-care th fundamentally
I'll always preach simple is always
going to be better with the exception of
sunscreen less is never more when it
comes to sunscreen always put on enough
sunscreen to achieve the advertis
protection and then speaking of
sunscreen find a texture that you like
and that you'll want to use every day I
personally on my socials sunscreen is
the biggest type of content that I do
and I'm always trying to help people
find the sunscreen that is perfect for
them gives them the benefits that they
want looks and feels the way they want
it to on their skin and finding that
sunscreen that you absolutely love will
make that less of a chore to do on a
daily basis find a texture that you'll
want to reapply as well if that is
something that you need to consider if
you're in prolonged UV exposure and then
consider do I need an everyday sunscreen
or a heavy duty sunscreen and by that if
you're just going from school to home or
from home to work very simple day a
lightweight sunscreen will be will be
fine reapply if need be if you are
sweating or if obviously you're at the
beach at the pool always consider a more
heavyduty water resistant option those
two sunscreens kind of live in separate
worlds you can find elegant sunscreens
in both sides of that but just consider
do I need an everyday sunscreen or more
heavy duty option so next let's add in
the extras these are toners Essences
serums treatment fundamentally all these
things are a Serv as vehicles for
actives and that's kind of every skin
care product you're going to use but by
that it's a matter of these extra things
these toners these serums and everything
they just serve as a supplement to the
basic three step so once you have those
basic three steps you can start to add
things into your skincare routine and
those things are going to be vehicles
for the active ingredients that are
going to help you achieve your skin
goals and the reason is that they can
have higher percentages of the active
ingredients in them or just a higher mix
of a bunch of different actives if
you're being very specific with what
you're targeting so for example things
to consider with these is what texture
do you prefer if you want a more
lightweight essence or toner those are
more watery they tend to be more
hydration focused or do you want
something more Rich a more richer
texture and these are the serums and
treatments that they're just going to
have more body to them some of these are
more moisturizing what is your skin
concern or goal just because the right
combination of certain activ which we're
going to talk about next are going to be
a lot better to streamline achieving
these goals that you want to get to and
you want to consider layering or how
you're going to cycle through these
ingredients throughout the week um just
to have a more holistic effect when it
comes to targeting your skincare
concerns and then what is your Skin's
tolerance this is a big one here
because sometimes people have more
sensitive skin or more sensitized skin
or some people just have a more tolerant
skin and they can layer more things or
combine higher strength actives so if
you have more sensitive skin consider a
wash off option if you have sensitive
skin consider a toner that has a lower
percentage of an active and just always
remember layering certain actives can be
more irritating so ingredient highlights
we're going to talk about a few major
like the Main Ingredients here we have
retinoids which are retinol retin now
these help it skin sell turnover and can
be great for blemishes pigmentation
texture Fine Lines ahas it's an
ingredient category and under that you
have glycolic acid lactic acid and
mandelic acid and those help SLO off
dead skin on the surface and those are
great for the appearance of texture and
pigmentation if you have more sensitive
skin consider a PHA and that still
exfoliates but it's just a lot more
gentle with a bigger
molecule bhas are great if you have oily
acne prone skin specifically and that
salicylic acid is the B ha if you have
more sensitive skin an lha which is a
capillo salicylic acid could be a good
option it's a very effective ingredient
still those also SLA off dead skin but
are more specific for oily acne prone
skin and again better for the appearance
of blemishes pores texture blackheads
oiliness vitamin C is a really hot
ingredient category it's very popular
and it's a very complicated category
ascorbic acid is the most direct form of
vitamin C but then you have derivatives
and each of the derivatives kind of
shines in its own way in tackling the
three main things that vitamin C can do
which is the appearance of Fine Lines
the appearance of pigmentation and
giving you antioxidant protection nide
which is also vitamin B3 it's a very
multifaceted well-rounded ingredient
it's great for pigmentation blemishes
oiliness Fine Lines moisturization
barrier supports it's interesting
because it covers the Gambit of oily
skin to dry skin depending on the
formula that it's in and then humectants
those help hydrate the skin and that
gives you that immediate Plumping effect
just because it's really giving your
skin a nice drink of water to make your
skin look more full soothing ingredients
and those just help to reduce the look
of redness and help the skin to feel
more soothe and then antioxidants this
itself is a really big category a lot of
things can give you antioxidant benefits
to some degree these are kind of the
main ones you're going to see and these
just protect your skin they offer an
extra level of protection Beyond
sunscreen and they protect your skin
from reactive oxygen species AKA free
radicals if you're targeting pretty much
any skin concern but specifically the
signs of aging this is a great cat or to
have on top of sunscreen and retinoids
speaking of which based off your
skincare concerns here's little lists
for here's a little list of ingredients
based off your skincare concern
screenshot this but just consider when
it comes to tackling skin care concerns
the look of blemishes the look of
pigmentation you want a very
well-rounded routine so cycle through
these ingredients throughout the week
some of these you can layer in the same
routine just be mindful of irritation
there's certain things that just when
combined on skin that's not used to them
just leads to irritation which can
exacerbate certain skincare concerns so
it can worsen blemishes for example so
just be mindful of listening to your
skin don't go crazy but these are really
good ingredients to consider a lot of
times in products targeting for example
the look of pigmentation you're already
going to see a good mix of these but
common misconceptions when it comes to
skincare routines you need multiple
steps you don't and a lot of times uh
just a moisturizer sunscreen will
already have some of those actives built
into them so a sunscreen for example
with vitamin C and nicomide can be great
for antioxidant protection but also
targeting the look of pigmentation
expensive equals better there's amazing
amazing drugstore skincare at very
affordable prices the ordinary comes to
mind for example which just tells you
like you don't need to spend a lot of
money to get really good results from
your skincare uh more expensive products
might have some more technology built in
might focus a lot more on Elegance you
never need to spend more money to
achieve really good results the big one
as a chemist is you can't mix X
ingredient and Y ingredient what this
really comes down to why you see a lot
of people talk about this just as a
result of irritation certain ingredients
if layered together you're not used to
them again will irritate you for example
exfoliants and retinoids nice camide and
vitamin C was a really popular one there
for a while those are completely fine to
mix or layer I mean and you'll see
products that already have them combined
together but if you have more sensitive
skin it might just be a matter of you
can't put them together for the sake of
irritation the only combination that I
will actually say you can't mix together
just because they cancel each other out
is aroid and benzo peroxide which if
you're focusing on blemish prone skin
just be weary of combining those two in
the same routine cycle them through
either one in the daytime one in the
night time or just every other day and
then higher strength equals better
results that's not always the case
higher strength sometimes just means
more irritation again just be mindful of
listening to your skin higher faster
louder when it comes to skincare isn't
always going to be the most expedited
results so just calm down downshift
relax and be mindful of being patient
when it comes to targeting your skincare
concerns and then final thoughts you
don't need a lot of products for a good
routine the basic three plus maybe one
extra serum depending on what you're
tackling is sufficient enough to achieve
your skincare goals especially when you
can find moisturizers and sunscreens
with actives are already built into them
just you don't have to do a lot but that
being said it's okay to use an extra
products in your skincare routine just
because it makes you happy one thing I
love to promote is skincare for the sake
of selfcare if a product smells good it
just feels really good when you wear it
that's fine to use it doesn't have to
have an a specific purpose to include it
in your routine but no matter what it is
when you're targeting a specific
skincare concern or you want to achieve
a specific goal consistency is key with
a lot of these skincare actives you have
to use them consistently for a few weeks
to a few months to really see the
results you want to get so just be
mindful of being consistent and making
sure you're being diligent with your
routine uh as a chemist this next one
skincare is not toxic there's a lot of
laws and regulations and rules put into
place as to what we can put in your
skincare and at what percentages and
even still we tend to use them at a much
lower concentrations than what is even
allowed so just notes skincare sold in
stores like very regulated skincare is
not toxic we have to abide by certain
laws and last thing you sunscreen every
skincare concern that you tackle
sunscreen will always benefit on top of
that sunscreen is great for preventing
skin cancer always consider other sunare
measures as well AKA avoiding direct
sunlight UPF clothing and then thank you
thank you to Jen for allowing me to be
part of this and inviting me to
participate I am very honored to be part
of a skincare e Summit uh thank you to
my husband Jorge for helping me with
this presentation I am a chemist I'm not
a graphic designer thank you to my
friend Tony aka capricorni skin for just
being a really good soundboard to help
me come up with this presentation and
what I'm going to say to you guys and
then Ember for helping me with a lot of
recommendations and also being my
