Core Theme
The prologue of George R.R. Martin's "The Winds of Winter" is likely to follow established patterns by introducing a minor character, a magical element, and thematic foreshadowing, potentially centering on an attack during the transport of Jane Westerling and Edmure Tully to Casterly Rock.

what will happen in the prologue to The
Winds of Winter George Ora Martin has
given us a couple of Clues so let's make
some educated guesses hi everyone this
is Robert welcome to indeep geek on this
channel we cover A Song of Ice and Fire
In Depth as well as the Lord of the
Rings and The Witcher if you're new here
welcome what will happen in the prologue
to The Winds of Winter George ARA Martin
has confirmed that like the other five
books in the series so far there will be
a prologue but but what will it be about
well so far georgea Martin has used the
prologues in A Song of Ice and Fire in a
very clear and almost predictable way
they are roughly in the right
chronological order with the rest of the
book so no flashbacks to many years
earlier or anything like that they are
written in the same style a single
person point of view and the point of
view used is that of a relatively minor
character in the story as a one-off not
one of the other main PV characters like
John Tyrion or Danny and so far that POV
character has always died at the end of
or immediately after their chapter there
has also always been a magical element
involved in the chapter and in
particular related to that death and
finally though probably most importantly
each prologue plays an important
thematic role to that book introducing
Concepts or plot threads that will
become important later and often clearly
mirroring something that will happen at
the very end of the book so to quickly
run down what we've had so far for a
Game of Thrones book one the prologue
was from the POV of will a member of the
knight's watch who along with wayar Roy
and gared runs into the others this
clearly introduces the reality of the
others and mirrors the introduction of
the dragons in the last chapter of the
book for a Clash of Kings we have maesta
creson at Dragonstone so we get that
whole Stannis and melisandra plotline
introduced the buildup to the battle of
the Blackwater and Mr Cron's death is
echoed in the last chapter of the book
with the death of maester
leuin A Storm of Swords has chat this
prologue features the others again and
sets in motion the chain of events that
leads at the end of the book to Jon Snow
becoming Lord commander of the Night's
Watch Pate is the POV character For A
Feast for Crows and Echoes very clearly
with the Sam chapter at the end of the
book and vamir six skins is the POV for
the A Dance with Dragons prologue we
learn a lot about skin changing the that
helps explain what probably happens with
John at the end of that book so that's
what we've had so far but what about the
Winds of Winter well back in 2014 a few
months after the end of season 4 of the
TV show and the Red Wedding Georgia
Martin teased that although on the show
Rob's wife was dead in the books she and
I quote is still alive and will be seen
in the prologue of the Winds of
Winter some parts of the random then
speculated that perhaps this meant it
would be a chapter from her POV and so
she would therefore die because that's
what happens to BV characters in A Song
of Ice and Fire prologues which prompted
Georg Martin to clarify in a later
interview let me make this clear here I
didn't say she was the Viewpoint
character I said she was in the prologue
it's the Viewpoint character who always
dies but I like to break rules just when
I get it established what the rule is
I like to break it so maybe the
Viewpoint character will die in the
prologue and maybe they
won't intriguing as his comment about
breaking the rules he has established
was about whether the POV character
would die we should probably keep an
open mind on that but let's assume for
now that the other elements that he has
usually used keeping the chapter in
rough chronological order with the rest
of the story including an element of
magic and setting up themes of the rest
of the book particularly the ending
still stands
particularly that last part that's one
of the main points of having a prologue
after all so with those parameters in
mind let's take a look at where we left
Jane westerling Rob's widow's story
because this prologue must pick up
somewhere soon after
that when Rob went North for what became
the Red Wedding Queen Jane stayed in
riverrun under the protection of Bryan
Tully the Blackfish but soon enough news
came through of what happened and
riverrun came under siege from the freze
and the Lannisters this was largely
ineffective until Jamie Lannister turned
up and forced EDM Tully to hand over the
castle the Blackfish managed to escape
but Jane and edmier were then both
Lannister prisoners and very important
ones edmier is obviously the lord of the
tulies now and although the tulies have
been deposed as Lords Paramount of the
reach they still have allies and Jane as
king Rob's Widow is also pretty
significant both personally and even
more so if she were carrying Rob's child
The Heir something jimie is very aware
of so he calls her before him and we get
this Jane westerling had been Rob
Stark's Queen the girl who cost him
everything with a wolf in her belly she
could have proved more dangerous than
the Blackfish she did not look dangerous
Jane was a willowy girl no more than 15
or 16 more Awkward than graceful she had
narrow hips breasts the size of apples a
mop of chestnut curls and the soft brown
eyes of a d pretty
enough there is a question I must ask
you are you carrying his child My
Lady Jane burst from her chair and would
have fled the room of the guard at the
door had not seized her by the arm she
is not said lady cibil as her daughter
struggled to escape I made certain of
that as your lord father bid
me which satisfies Jamie it turns out
that Jane's mother had been working for
Tywin all along and had been feeding her
Moon tea added to this it is now 6
months after she last saw Rob and she is
still described as willowy so she
doesn't look pregnant none of which is
conclusive but as I say it seems
unlikely now that she is pregnant
nevertheless jimie is taking no chances
she is to be taken to cly Rock along
with her mother and EDM Tali she will be
kept under guard for 2 years to make
very very sure that even if she does
later have a child everyone knows that
it can't have been robs as a complet
aight here there was a theory in the
fandom that maybe the Jane we saw wasn't
the real Jane perhaps the real Jane
escaped with the Blackfish the main
evidence for this is a comparison of how
Jane's hips are described here as narrow
and when cat sees her noting that she
had good hips and would have no problem
bearing children but that has been
largely discredited now Georg Martin has
said a couple of times that this was
just a simple mistake he is Human After
All anyway jie then sends Jane her
mother and edmure with an armed escort
off to cast Rock in doing so he is
clearly very concerned that they may
come under attack from the Blackfish and
the riverrun Garrison he had let loose
in the riverlands he allocates a 100
soldiers to guard the wagons then
doubles it then doubles it again so 400
he also rides for some way with sir
Foley prester the commander of the troop
to give him some final
instructions we don't know where the
Blackfish is Jamie reminded him but if
he can cut EDM free he will that will
not happen my Lord sley was no man's
fool Scouts and out Riders will screen
our March and will fortify our camps by
night I have picked 10 men to stay with
Tully day and night my best longbowman
if he should ride so much as a foot off
the road
they will loose so many shafts at him
that his own mother would take him for a
goose good Jamie would as Leaf have
Tully reached casty Rock safely but
better dead than fled best keep some
archers near Lord westling daughter as
well safley seemed taken back gowen's
girl she's the young Wolf's Widow Jamie
finished and twice as dangerous as edmir
if she were ever to escape us as you say
my Lord she will be
watched so archers have been set to kill
edmir and Jane if there is even a hint
that they might Escape Jamie is right to
be concerned about an attack there are
lots of groups close by in the
riverlands who might want to free those
prisoners or just kill some Lannisters
so if Jane westerling is in the prologue
and the prologue takes place in roughly
the right chronological order George Ro
Martin does shift things around a little
bit for dramatic effect but never so as
to skew the whole timeline then there
are only two real options either on
route to cast rock or after they have
reached there personally I can't really
see the dramatic purpose in having it
happen in casty rock as that's currently
a bit out of the way of the rest of the
main plot lines at the moment perhaps if
she were pregnant and gave birth to
Rob's Heir but as I said earlier I think
that's unlikely so an encounter on the
road does seem more likely or even given
the precautions James took pretty strongly
strongly
foreshadowed some have argued this isn't
likely because by the time of the
epilogue to A Dance with Dragons which
is perhaps a month or maybe even 6 weeks
after Jane and Co set off the Lannisters
in King's Landing clearly haven't
received any report of an attack but the
journey is over 400 mil if you take the
most direct route much of it through
hilly ground and winter and snow have
now come to the riverlands progress will
be slow and there's no reason to think
that a report would get back to the
Lannisters quickly at all particularly
if the attack happened in the occupied
territory of the riverlands what's more
interesting to me is that we also
haven't heard that they had arrived
safely in the westerlands which is
suspicious surely we would have had a
report that they had passed the golden
tooth or
sarsfield so let's take Jim's concern
about a possible attack seriously he is
primarily concerned about an attack by
the Blackfish and the riverrun Garrison
he set free so perhaps the pro log is an
attack by them which would be exciting
but probably not particularly magical in
its own right so what about lady
stonehart and what remains of the
Brotherhood without banners there is no
doubt that she would want to free her
brother and daughter-in-law if she could
and they are in the riverlands and if
she is there personally that adds the
magical element but do they have the
strength in numbers to launch such an
attack it's clear that when Beric
finally stayed dead and Lady stonehart
replaced him as leader replacing Justice
with vengeance as their guiding
principle many of the original members
left they have many sympathizers in the
riverlands but they are spread far and
they are no longer the military force
they once were taking on 400 Lannister
soldiers seems again unlikely but I have
another option a wolf attack I as
direwolf neria has spent the duration of
the war slowly building up a super pack
of wolves no one knows exactly how many
but there are reports of them being
hundreds strong enough to threaten that
Lannister Force particularly if they
attack at the same time as the Blackfish
or lady stonehart added to which Georg
Martin has more than hinted that this
Super PAC will have a significant role
to play in the books when asked about it
he has said you know I don't like to
give things away but you don't hang a
giant Wolfpack on the wall unless you
intend to use it reference there to
Czech off's gun the Super PAC will get
involved in the central plot it's just a
matter of whether it's in the prologue or
or
later finally I do wonder whether we've
had a hint of this at the start of the
pre-released Aya POV chapter from The
Winds of Winter at this time she is
still wogging into nimia when she sleeps
that chapter starts like
this she woke with a gasp not knowing
who she was or where the smell of blood
was heavy in her nostrils she had
dreamed of wolves again of running
through some dark Pine Forest with a
great pack at her heels hard on the
scent of prey she took a breath to quiet
the howling in her heart trying to
remember more of what she dreamt but
most of it had gone already there had
been blood in it though and a full moon
overhead and a tree that watched her as she
she
ran the Super PAC are clearly hunting
something or someone and catching them
judging by the repeated mention of blood
if this is what happens this also fits
in with a lot of the habits that Georg
ra Martin has established for his
prologues somebody can die at the end of
it there's a magical link through the
warging and whoever the POV character is
they are new Jamie and Brienne
incidentally are the only main prv
characters in The riverlands at this
point and they are last seen in Penny
tree Some Way north of riveron perhaps a
week after the Wagon train set off from
there so they may may be involved but
they'd have to move pretty quick to get
there in time without speculating too
much on what happens in the rest of the
Winds of Winter this also sets up a lot
of potential plot points for later on
Aya reclaiming her Stark identity and
heading back to Westeros the Stark
inheritance crisis if we get absolute
confirmation that Rob didn't have an
heir and just pause for one moment to
consider if Jane does die in this
chapter maybe even shot by a Lannister
Soldier after Jaimie had ordered it if
she tries to escape how would lady
stonehart react to that and it might
also set up what could be the start of a
stark fightback and Vengeance spree
against the fras and Lannisters in the
riverlands culminating in well I'll do
another video on that so who will be the
POV character it probably now won't be
Jane after what Geor Martin said POV
characters also tend to be slightly
outside the main action of the story
it's just a guess but perhaps a foly
prer the man Jaimie left in charge of
the operation for a minor character we
actually have quite a well-rounded
characterization for him he's competent
level-headed and loyal he reminds Jamie
of an inkeeper for example so to the
action if it follows the broad pattern
of previous prologues we might expect a
slow start inside the head of our POV
character with plenty of opportunities
to think about the past and about the
current situation enough for us to
understand where that person is coming
from and perhaps even develop a Little
Bit of Sympathy for them personally then
things turn up a notch The Wagon Train
gets attacked then a fateful decision by
our PV character like Pates to get the
key for the Alchemist or cresence to
attempt to poison Melisandre or Chets to
go through with the Mutiny at the Fist
of the first men then the magical twist
and death in the last few pages the
arrival of the others melisandre's magic
protecting her from Poison The Alchemist
being being a magically disguised
faceless man and so on perhaps in this
case the Fateful decision is to order
the archers to shoot Jane as she
attempts to escape or maybe even edmure
let's not forget that he's there too and
then the magical twist at the end
leading to a death is nimia herself
towering over the other wolves prowling
towards the person who gave that order
as the rest hang back leaving that kill
to her it's just a thought and would
make for an epic and possibly also
tragic opening to The Winds of Winter in
any event I think the attack on the
wagon train is looking very likely as the
the
prologue but what do you think the
prologue will be about let me know in
