Hello and welcome. Welcome. This is
Learn English with Harry Potter, a
teaching series for beginners.
We tell the story of Harry Potter in
Easy English, step by step. Today's
episode is called The Letters Begin to
Arrive. This story is for A1LE students.
We will speak slowly and clearly. you
will understand it.
First we will read the story. Then we
will explain some words. After that we
will listen again and answer simple questions.

Summer is here. Harry is home from
school. He still lives with the Derslley's.
Derslley's.
They are not kind to him. He must cook,
clean, and stay quiet.
One morning, Uncle Vernon gets the mail.
He sees a letter with Harry's name on
it. He is surprised.
No one writes to Harry. The letter is
yellow. It has a purple seal.
It says, "Mr. H. Potter, the cupboard
under the stairs, four private drive."
Uncle Vernon does not give the letter to
Harry. He hides it.
The next day, more letters come. Two,
three, five. More and more. They come
through the mail slot. They come under
the door. They even come through the windows.

Harry sees one on the floor. He picks it
up, but Uncle Vernon grabs it. He yells,
"No letters for you."
Letters come every day.
Uncle Vernon is angry. He nails the
mailbox shut. He blocks the door, but
the letters still come. One flies down
the chimney.
Harry tries to catch it. Dudley shouts.
The room is full of letters. Uncle
Vernon takes the family away. He says,
"We must leave.
They drive far. They stay in a hotel,
but a letter comes to the hotel, too.
Uncle Vernon drives to a tiny house on a
rock. It is on the sea. The wind blows.
The rain falls hard. It is very cold.
They eat cold food. There is no TV. No
bed for Harry.
Harry looks at the clock. It is almost
midnight. Tomorrow is his birthday. He
will be 11. He draws a cake in the dust.
He writes, "Happy birthday, Harry."
Tick, tick, tick. It is 12:00.
Boom. There is a loud sound. Someone is
knocking. The door shakes. Who is there?
Harry waits.
Something big is coming. [Music]
[Music] Vocabulary.
Letter. A message written on paper and
sent in an envelope. Example,

Harry gets a letter with his name.
Mailbox. A box where letters come to
your house. Example.
Example.
Uncle Vernon closes the mailbox.
Chimney. A pipe on the roof where smoke
goes out.
Example, a letter flies down the chimney.

Grab to take something fast with your hand.

Example, Uncle Vernon grabs the letter.
Yell to shout loudly.
Example, he yells, "No letters for you."
Nail. To fix something with nails.
Example, he nails the mailbox shut.
Tiny, very small. Example, they go to a
tiny house on a rock.
Rock, a big piece of stone or land.
Example, the house is on a rock in the
sea. Dust, small bits of dirt.
Example, Harry draws a cake in the dust.
Knock to hit a door to ask to come in. Example,
Example,
someone is knocking at the door. [Music]
