this is mouse one chapter 6 part 2 the
last one stopped a little abruptly sorry
but we were at the part where they're
hiding and the seller miss mattone was
husband came home so they had to stay
down there while he was home for
business there was rats down there and
then but then mattone was sat down it's
been three days she stopped coming it's
been three days since you brought any
food here have some candy I still had
candies I organized it to do kurta only
this we had to eat also here we had no
place to wash so Anya gots on their skin
in terrible rush I don't know what's
worse the itching or the hunger don't
scratch it's only Shh the door
I miss Matawan what comes in I'm sorry I
couldn't get down before my husband is
getting suspicious yes why I go to the
cellar so often even asked if I was
hiding Jews here he was joking but still
are you all right here there are rats
giant rats they're horrible well you'd
better be you'd be better off with the
rats than with Gustavo at least the rats
won't kill you and you know she was
right happy even in these conditions
after 10 days her husband left and she
took goes back oh it's good to be home a
Vladek it's a lot nicer than that cellar
but that didn't feel safe here it was
too many ways somebody could find us out
I wanted only to go to bed hungry so
when that came Thursday I went in the
direction to streets cars Sun to seek
out car look I had to pass where some
children were playing so he's going to
meet the smugglers to see if he can get
out and on his way there a Jew a Jew
they ran screaming home help mommy Jew
quick their mothers came outside you see
what was the mother's always we're told
be careful a jewel will catch you in a
bag and eat you so they taught their
children this is part of the propaganda
they actually have something called
blood libel
they started horrible propaganda things
in the movies and posters and there's a
book the Priory's of Zion or they would
say things like you know they would use
baby blood in their food I mean just
horrible unbelievable things but people
fear what they do not to understand and
they were swayed by the demagoguery of
Hitler he controlled with fear fear of
the other fear of somebody who doesn't
look like you boy these Jews they're
coming for you right
and people believe that it was rough
economic times and so they looked for a
scapegoat and Hitler was all too happy
to point that out some people believed
it but I brought it over to them
Heil Hitler I said if I ran away they
would see yes it is it you don't be
afraid little one said you I won't hurt you
you
hey sorry mister you know kids are Heil
Hitler so I came out from this but the
experience cost me lots of hairs when I
arrived to Kaka the two smugglers were
there sitting in the kitchen please wait
in the other room they'll see you soon
mr. Mandelbaum lonex Spiegelman
I'm the bomb before the war on the
sweetshop and you and I brought always
new pastries there he used to be a very
rich man and so stomach this is my wife
and you know my nephew Oh Abraham what
are you doing here
back when 8th let's get to Abraham was a
big member of Jewish Council we're
trying to get out of Poland to hunger
yeah onion now you're trying to arrange
that to the smugglers I proposed us how
they would do and at the border our
partners will take you through the
mountains oh very risky they spoke
Yiddish till the poles don't understand
so what do you think I know miss Coco
but I'm not sure about these two listen
I'll go first if everything is ok I'll
write back to you the others once you
talk a little longer but they're ready
to go now fine fine I agreed to Amanda
bomb to meet here again and if the
letter from Abraham came and it was good
we'll go but if I ever talked to the
plan to Anya no you're crazy it's too
dangerous but if we hear from Abraham
Apple comes to search for illegal goods
what if neighbors dentists us through
the kitchen window I'm not going what if
her husband finds out about to say even
the baby could let something slip this
war could last 4 or 5 years we don't
know where the money will run out oh
please I'm hungry we would be free to
walk at the streets again like human
beings I've always taken care of you
trust me oh I'm scared don't do it mr.
Spiegelman it's just not safe you don't
know anything about these smugglers it's
like talking to a wall
you know we won't go unless we hear
through that our friend got through
Abraham awful nightmares about your trip
please stay with me
wait where are you going now to visit
cousin and see where he's hiding if we
do go to hungry he may be better off
here with you Milosh
he helped me in suzhou that was the shoe
factory he says mule oh she's really a
fine fellow he wasn't the schemer like
his other ones Milosz was good he helped
him at the shoe factory maybe now if he
needed I could help him the janitor and
the house me low short she hid now him
in his family but oh boy what's the
situation his was worse than I could imagine
imagine
I went to the janitor by trolley I mean
oh it's just cousin yes he told me you
might come I have some company upstairs
I can't take you to me until they leave
gentlemen this is my cousin Vladek she
lies hey cuz have a drink so we talked
and they believe that I'm her cousin
we're almost automatic abbring some more
Minka oh there isn't any bah she's
hiding her vodka yeah just like she's
hiding Jews in her yard the janitor and
I froze our blood from fear if you don't
put another bottle on the table right
away we'll tell they get stopped all
about the Jews you're keeping a few
marks mean run down stone to get another
bottle from our friends hey thattaboy
fifteen minutes you came with the box
when they were happy you see your cousin
knows how to entertain guests here's to
your health
we drank and drank your midnight finally
they went home I think it's safe to go
down are you carrying food from English
now I fed them earlier this is just
trash the conditions homeless I was
living you couldn't believe I always
bring garbage so the neighbors don't get
suspicious you know your cousin's here
in each courtyard was very deep hole to
throw all the garbage in' and inside the
garbage hole here separated the tiny
space maybe five or six feet platic I'm
glad to see you you can see the not
lines of motion here but the stench he
says oh my god it looks down only for a
second suppose in there was living
miosha's wife and their three year old
boy how can you live there you must be
freezing we have no choice at least
their bunkers underground and the
decomposing garbage it gives some heat
but people know you're there I told him
my story with these poles upstairs what
can we do listen Anya and I may be going
to Hungary yeah I explained our hiding
place it's not perfect but better than
his I'll come again when I have more
news but it's very late now I must be getting
getting
oh and I was lucky nobody made me any
questions going back to CEO pants a few
days after I came again to the smugglers
and Mandelbaum was also there
look Vladek my nephew is safe they
brought me a letter from him it was in
Yiddish which was signs really by Abram
so we agreed right - way to go but Anya
just couldn't want to let go please call
it off no no it's some kind of trick be
reasonable I saw Abraham's letter with
my own eyes Oh what did it say dear aunt
and uncle everything is wonderful here I
am safely arrived I'm free and happy
don't lose a minute join me as soon as
you can your loving nephew hey bruh oh I
don't know leave the day after tomorrow
for the Katowice train station and
finally I convinced her so I went one
more time over to Milosz to his garbage
bunker and directed him he must go
Lucille Pinson hide and you know me lush
and his wife and boy they all survived
themselves the whole war sitting there
with mat ona so again stepping away head
Vladek we've all got this guilt art
certainly has a theory Oh guilt for all
kinds of stuff but Anya - remember she
had the opportunity to hide rishu and it
ended up the boy that she would have
hidden with came out safe they declined
then they did it later
Russia did not come out here's an
example where Vlad ik made a choice had
he stayed they likely would have come
out fine instead he makes this choice to
try to get smuggled and of course we all
know he's headed towards Auschwitz but
for Anya and I it was waiting a
different destiny we came with no
problem my trolley cards who meets the
meeting points with the manual bombs and
smugglers everything is arranged here
here are your tickets do you have the
rest of the payment yes of course here
where are you going
where's your partner going he's phoning
ahead to let the men know who will pick
you up at the border he'll join us on
the train don't worry
what's of course we're worried so all of
us together starts at our journey we
traveled less than an hour till we came
to be lost Kobe Allah here I used to
have my factory in here the smugglers
disappeared it was big commotion Gestapo
came on every side your ass in Katowice
it was only to them that the smuggler phoned
phoned
here they are they marched us through
the city of Velasco we passed the
factory that I once owned boy talk about
irony right we passed the markets where
always we bots to eat and past even the
streets where we used to live and we
came till the prison and there they put
us I had a small bag to travel when they
registered me they looked at everything
what's that shoe polish yeah I like to
keep myself neat with a spoon he took
out little by little all the Polish well
well a gold watch you Jews always have
gold wrapped in foil I kept it hidden
there it's what's my last treasure which
was this watch I got from father-in-law
when I first married to Anya
well never mind that they took it and
threw me with Mandelbaum into a cell
wait a minute
whatever happened Abraham who man the
bombs nephew oh yes
finish the same as us at the
concentration camp but I thought it was
with him but now I'm telling you here in
the prison here we got very little to it
maybe some soup one time a day and said
with nothing to do why don't they put us
to work with the rest of you it means
you won't be here very long every week
or so a truck takes some of the
prisoners away excuse me do any of you
know German my family just sent me a
food parcel if I write back they'll send
another but we're only allowed to read
German again something that serves
Vladek well his ability to figure things
out his quick learning quick on his feet
and his ability to speak multiple
languages I knew well to read German so
I wrote in short time he got to get in a
package hey you did a great job take
anything you want for you and your
friend it was eggs there it was
chocolates I was very lucky to get such
goodies few days later the truck came
they pushed us in I thought a hundred
hundred dollars one time in tours with
Anya one more time I was together with a
tiny here darling you have a present for you
you
eggs cake how can still things I got
writing my letter no no you keep it I'm
not hungry here at least take half for
later we came to the town of Austin
that's where all Schwarz was before the
war I sold textiles here here we came to
the concentration camp Auschwitz and
knew that from here we will not come out
to anymore we knew the stories that they
will gas us and throw us in the ovens
this was 1944 we knew everything and
here we were now if you were reading
this on the actual page
okay sorry as I was saying this is a
bleed if we were to actually hold the
comic book in her hand the white border
you see the edge doesn't exist this is
obviously a photocopy so what you
actually see is like this where the
panels above or these panels almost all
panels have the border to it but a bleed
you can see how far it extends right on
the edges there a bleed literally looks
like it's bleeding off the page there is
no panel it's almost like it was bigger
and then they cut the picture the idea
of a bleed the purpose of it is to show
a sense of timelessness Spiegelman uses
this very rarely but when he chooses to
employ it it's very effective I cannot
think of a more timeless place than also
it's a place where time just feels like
it is not moving forward that it is
stuck and that is Oscar it's like
there's so much of it you can't contain
it on the page there's so much that is
spilled off the page the story of all
sorts can not be told it is that big it
cannot be defined on a page and there's
so much it literally bleeds off the page
continuing on they go in and of course
the famous sign their work will set you
free and they knew they were at the end
oh my god yeah so it was and when they
opened the truck they pushed men to one
way women the other Anya and I went each
in a different direction and we couldn't
know if ever we'll see each other alive
again you know this is where mom's
Diaries would be specifically useful but
give me some idea what she went through
while you were apart I can tell you she
went through the same terrible and it's
getting cold why don't you go upstairs
and see if we can find her notebooks I
looked already it's just not to find
anymore well let's check in the garage
you got loads of stuff there no I'm not
fine because I remind myself what
happened these notebooks and other
really nice things of mother one time I
had very bad day and all these things I
destroyed what you can see he's so
shocked he drops a cigarette
Tania died I had to make an order with
everything these papers and too many
memories so I burned them you burn them
Chris you save tons of for us of
you put yeah it's a shame for years they
were laying
nobody even looked in did you ever read
any of them can't remember what she
wrote no I looked in but I don't
remember only I know what she said I
wish my son he grows up and will be
interested in this you you you murderer
how the hell could you do such a thing
ah so your father you young this way
even your friends you should never yell
this way but I'm telling you after the
tragedy with mother I was so depressed
then I didn't know if I'm coming or I'm
going I'm sorry look papa it's getting
late I better get going home come first
upstairs for the loofah coffee no I
better get going right away it's a
telephone to me you should visit here
more often don't be such a stranger you
bet see ya murderer
again perspective having the sons
perspective of course it is a great loss
it is a betrayal putting yourself and
Vladek shoes having these things around
you you know haven't you ever broken up
with somebody and just you want to get
rid of all trace of them I can't imagine
your partner who you you know the mother
of your children you lost a child with
that when she takes her own life you
survived Auschwitz with the kind of
emotional scars one would have and so
you could see why they might just be too
painful to have things around but
fathers and sons do not always see eye
to eye and unfortunately a lot of times
it is later in life that they make this
reconciliation and that's the part of
the story that I'm always drawn to more
as time goes on certainly in the
beginning is fantastic the gosh wits and
everything but the father and the son is
another story as well that I think is
important all right here we have the end
