0:00 hey everybody Welcome Back you've almost
0:01 survived unit 4 but first let's dive
0:03 into various ideological perspectives on
0:06 social policy smash that like button
0:08 let's get
0:10 [Music]
0:12 started okay so one last time we're
0:14 going to talk about political ideologies
0:17 let's go alphabetically and start with
0:18 conservatives we already know that
0:21 conservatives prefer less economic
0:23 regulation and lower taxes and less
0:25 spending on entitlement programs like
0:27 Medicaid but unlike Libertarians there
0:30 are other areas where conservatives
0:32 favor more governmental power for one
0:34 they often favor increased defense
0:36 spending and a larger role for the
0:38 government in crime and punishment
0:40 favoring more police and more punishment
0:43 of crime this makes sense if we consider
0:45 that to conservatives one of the primary
0:48 purposes of government is security since
0:50 they favor strong Law and Order they may
0:52 favor policies that some argue infringe
0:54 UND due process and the rights of the
0:56 accused similarly they are more likely
0:58 to oppose policy policies that
1:00 decriminalize drugs and are supportive
1:03 of many policies that regulate and
1:05 restrict personal freedoms for instance
1:08 conservatives are often pro-life and
1:10 support legislation restricting or
1:12 eliminating abortion rights since they
1:14 believe that the government should
1:15 protect Traditional Values when that
1:18 goal comes into conflict with individual
1:20 personal freedoms well protecting
1:23 Traditional Values is more important and
1:25 that desire for Traditional Values comes
1:27 through in conservative support for
1:29 voucher programs to help students attend
1:31 private schools including religious
1:34 schools a voucher basically allows a
1:36 family to use taxpayer funds to help pay
1:38 some of the cost of private school
1:40 tuition one argument for this is that it
1:43 gives families more choice and control
1:45 over their child's education and
1:47 promotes traditional religious values
1:49 ultimately providing security and
1:51 protecting Traditional Values is the key
1:53 purpose of government while privacy and
1:56 due process rights aren't as important
1:59 many conservatives View the second
2:00 amendment's right to bear arms for
2:02 self-defense as a sacred right and on
2:05 our big picture concept of Liberty and
2:07 Order conservatives tend to favor order
2:10 and security on social issues whereas
2:13 they tend to favor economic freedom one
2:15 last big picture concept is that in
2:17 policy areas like education and public
2:19 health conservatives generally favor
2:22 Less Federal governmental involvement
2:24 and prefer for responsibility for these
2:26 issues to be left to state governments
2:29 next up we are already know that
2:30 liberals usually favor more economic
2:32 regulation higher taxes and more
2:34 spending on enement programs but while
2:37 they prefer a vigorous government in
2:39 economic matters they usually prefer a
2:41 lot more freedom and less government in
2:44 Social areas liberals typically want to
2:46 reduce defense spending and when it
2:48 comes to Crime and Punishment they focus
2:50 more on protecting individual rights
2:53 civil rights and the rights of the
2:54 accused this means that they support
2:56 things like the exclusionary rule tell
2:59 protect d new process rights the freedom
3:01 of individuals to live their lives their
3:03 way regardless of Traditional Values is
3:06 also important to liberals and helps
3:08 explain their support for lgbtq rights
3:11 and civil rights more broadly for groups
3:13 who have been historically disadvantaged
3:15 they often support decriminalizing or
3:17 legalizing marijuana and usually
3:19 identify as pro-choice advocating for
3:22 abortion rights in the area of education
3:25 and religion Liberals are usually major
3:27 supporters of public education and
3:30 therefore often oppose vouchers for two
3:32 reasons first the vouchers reduce
3:35 funding for public schools and secondly
3:38 these vouchers can be used to attend
3:39 religious schools which they feel
3:42 violates The Establishment Clause when
3:44 it comes to Liberty and Order liberals
3:45 favor order and security on economic
3:48 issues and freedom on social issues in
3:51 contrast to conservatives liberals
3:52 generally favor more federal government
3:55 involvement in policy areas like
3:56 education and public health preferring
3:59 Nationwide policies to a patchwork of
4:01 State policies and last up Libertarians
4:04 unlike the other two Libertarians are
4:06 super consistent the answer is always
4:09 more freedom economically socially
4:12 whatever the less government and the
4:14 more freedom the better Libertarians
4:16 favor a dramatic reduction in defense
4:19 spending and when it comes to Crime and
4:21 Punishment they are obsessed with
4:23 protecting individual rights and the
4:25 rights of the accused they love pretty
4:27 much the entire Bill of Rights but they
4:29 really buy into the idea of due process
4:31 rights they are all about letting people
4:33 do what they want to Live and Let Live
4:37 they favor decriminalizing victimless
4:39 crimes and therefore often advocate for
4:41 legalizing drugs some arguing for
4:43 legalizing all drugs when he comes to
4:45 education they favor privatizing
4:48 education arguing that the main reason
4:50 why education is failing is because
4:52 government schools have a monopoly on
4:55 education so they favor expanding the
4:58 choice families have over schooling and
5:00 this should come as no surprise but when
5:02 we think of Liberty and Order
5:03 Libertarians always choose Liberty and
5:06 lastly on the state versus Federal power
5:09 debate Libertarians say no thanks
5:12 preferring little governmental power of
5:14 either kind Beyond protecting individual
5:17 liberty and property rights and that's
5:20 it for unit 4 you made it until next
