0:01 Hi everybody. Welcome to another episode
0:03 of Iconic Estates. I'm your host Renee D
0:05 and today we are checking out a stunning
0:08 desert modern home designed by Eric
0:10 Peterson of PHX Architecture. Let's go
0:11 take a look.
0:13 Well, hello Eric. Thanks for having us.
0:15 Great to see you. Welcome.
0:17 Ah, this is a beautiful home. So, you've
0:19 been working on this for the last 2 years.
0:19 years.
0:22 Yes. Yeah. We're so excited to finally
0:25 have this uh built and ready to go. And
0:27 as you can see here, one unbelievable
0:31 view. And we took this lot and really
0:33 sort of flipped it backwards. So the
0:35 main street is over there, but that is
0:37 our view side. And so we wanted the
0:40 whole house to encapture that view.
0:41 It's an incredible view. And you framed
0:43 it perfectly. And I love this feels like
0:45 your signature style. This almost
0:48 borderless window that goes into a mass.
0:50 I mean, it's just it's it's just framing
0:52 a piece of artwork really in this
0:53 beautiful entryway.
0:54 Well, thanks. We like to blend the
0:56 indoors and the outdoors, and this is a
0:59 really amazing lot to do that on because
1:01 we really just wanted to capture all of
1:04 that exciting uh desert landscape and
1:06 make it feel like there's no boundary
1:08 between what is inside and what is outside.
1:08 outside.
1:10 So, on day one, was it obvious to
1:12 everybody what this house was going to
1:14 how it needed to be oriented on the lot?
1:16 Well, it was obvious to me and thank God
1:18 to our developers, it was obvious to
1:20 them to hire us to create something
1:23 because on a lot like this, it had been
1:25 sitting for quite a while. And so, for
1:27 us to come and think creatively out of
1:29 the box was really what it needed. And I
1:31 think that's why it sat so long because
1:33 you could see it's stunning lot, but I
1:34 don't think a lot of people knew what to
1:35 do with it.
1:36 Yeah. Well, so this is the key of having
1:38 a great architect because one of my
1:39 favorite things is being in some of
1:41 these homes and thinking, well, who
1:42 would ever want that? And then all of a
1:45 sudden you orient a beautiful home on a
1:46 beautiful lot and you realize that
1:48 there's really a gem to be had if you
1:49 work with somebody who knows how to find it.
1:50 it.
1:51 Yes. That's right. And then you have to
1:53 treat this as as if you're sort of on
1:56 the ocean. Like every one of these views
1:58 are golden and so you want to capture it
1:59 as much as possible.
2:00 Yeah. So, okay. Well, let's walk through
2:02 the house. Let's go to the main area
2:04 first. And so, what was your concept
2:06 behind all this? This is beautiful open
2:07 living area.
2:09 Yes. Well, we wanted to blend all the
2:12 spaces together as much as possible, but
2:14 also each room has a bit of character.
2:16 So, we just didn't want a cavern. So, as
2:18 you can see, as you move into here, it's
2:21 quite open, but yet it has a comforting
2:23 space to it. The ceiling drops in a
2:25 little bit. It's a little bit more cozy,
2:27 but it's completely open to all the
2:28 other rooms.
2:29 So, I like how you use the word cozy
2:31 because cozy interiors was the interior
2:33 designer on this house, and it does have
2:35 a cozy feel. Yes. So, you said it had
2:37 kind of a gentleman's suit sort of theme
2:39 as they were selecting.
2:40 Yeah, we wanted it to be a little bit
2:43 sophisticated and have those deep wood
2:47 tones and pattern and great materials.
2:49 So, I'm noticing this house, I haven't
2:50 seen this for a little while, but
2:52 there's a lot of stone on the interior.
2:54 What was your thinking with that?
2:56 Again, partly to warm it up and to bring
2:58 some texture in it. stone always looks
3:01 amazing with lighting and we've done
3:03 some really amazing lighting effects on
3:05 it which is very exciting for us to do
3:07 but we also wanted to make again that
3:08 connection between the indoor and the outdoor.
3:09 outdoor.
3:11 It's really beautiful. So I feel like
3:13 it's light and bright in here but it's
3:15 also a little bit dark and moody. They
3:17 the interior designer accomplished both.
3:19 And so the home the home builder was
3:22 Travis Custom Homes. Um and so this is a
3:24 new team that I'm not familiar with. So
3:25 tell me a little bit about the team.
3:28 Well, we've known each other all for a
3:30 long time, but haven't really had a lot
3:32 of opportunities to work together. So,
3:34 this was sort of our big shot, and we
3:36 really wanted to merge all of our brands
3:38 together and do something you new and
3:41 unique. And I think we accomplished that.
3:41 that.
3:42 Yeah, it's beautiful. And I really like
3:44 this linear lighting in the ceiling.
3:46 That's another really great modern touch
3:47 as well.
3:49 And what it does is it sort of blends
3:51 between the two rooms, right? So this is
3:53 one really big space, but again we're
3:56 trying to create separate zones. So we
3:58 have the kitchen zone and then we have
4:01 this sort of intermediate zone that uh
4:04 is the outdoor bar, an indoor bar, a
4:07 wine celler, a sitting area. And even
4:10 though really there's no walls that
4:11 separate it, you feel like you're in
4:12 your own space here.
4:14 Yeah, it's beautiful. I feel like um
4:16 glass walls are just where we're at. And
4:18 again, as we look towards this
4:20 spectacular view, again, the signature
4:23 kind of like just there's no walls. It's
4:24 just framed in glass to like look like artwork.
4:26 artwork.
4:28 Yeah, I think sitting here uh both in
4:30 the daytime and at night time and being
4:32 able to capture the entire Camel Black
4:35 Mountain view, it is really stunning.
4:36 And then of course working in with the
4:40 backyard, we had to screen a very busy
4:42 street that is right behind that wall
4:45 there. So doing water feature elements
4:48 and incredible landscape really just
4:50 makes you not believe that there's
4:52 anything beyond that except more landscape.
4:52 landscape.
4:54 When that landscape grows just a little
4:55 bit more, you certainly won't see it.
4:57 And I can tell you this, you cannot hear
4:59 it from here. So great construction
5:01 because I don't hear any of it. This
5:04 house feels very quiet and peaceful
5:05 here. What are some of your favorite
5:07 parts about this house?
5:09 Well, certainly this this room is
5:10 stunning, you know, and I think you
5:12 could just spend hours just in this one
5:15 room entertaining or just hanging out
5:17 and it doesn't feel cavernous,
5:19 which is something that I feel like we
5:22 bring to all of our projects. And the
5:24 natural light coming in, which I think
5:25 is just so
5:27 I think healthy, just invigorating. When
5:30 we were talking about health earlier, I
5:32 think that this type of a house really
5:34 encourages a healthy living.
5:36 It does. Yeah. You know, um, bright
5:38 light is good for us health-wise and it
5:39 also helps with a healthy attitude and a
5:41 healthy attitude is the beginning of everything,
5:43 everything, [Music]
5:53 [Music]
5:55 you know, like I really love like the
5:57 stone. I'm really liking. So, I want to
6:00 ask you about this. So, the use of the
6:03 stone in this powder, this is gorgeous.
6:04 this texture in here. Yes,
6:06 the stone throughout the house, I think,
6:08 is one of my favorite parts. But this is
6:09 really quite an investment that somebody
6:11 made to have real stone.
6:13 And I think it's important not only to
6:15 bring in that that natural material on
6:18 an inner part of the room, but it also
6:21 adds to that textural quality of the
6:22 light bouncing off of it. You get that
6:25 shade and shadow and it's just something
6:26 really interesting that you bring into a
6:27 potter room.
6:28 Yeah, I mean powder room should always
6:30 be amazing. And then I love how you lit
6:32 it over here. I mean, that really is a
6:34 beautiful feature. I'm sure at night,
6:35 this is a gorgeous wall.
6:37 And on both sides of the hall, we
6:39 highlighted it with that stone and lit
6:41 it off to the sides. And again,
6:44 capturing that warmth, the texture, and
6:45 the shade and shadow.
6:47 So, this office is really cool. How do
6:47 these doors work?
6:49 So, we wanted to have something that's
6:51 open to the entry, but if you're going
6:53 to be in a private meeting, then these
6:56 both come in at the corner and close
6:59 off. And so there you feel like you've
7:01 got a little bit of privacy, but yet
7:02 again you don't feel like you're
7:03 completely closed in. Yeah,
7:05 Yeah,
7:06 that's really fun feature.
7:08 Yeah, that's really nice. I haven't seen
7:11 these. I love this. Okay, so what was
7:13 the thinking with the primary suite?
7:15 Well, again, we really wanted to create
7:16 that as a little bit of an oasis in the
7:19 house and and to be able to come in your
7:22 own area and have a little morning bar
7:24 when you first walk in. And then again,
7:27 capturing that stunning view, having
7:30 your own private patio space that is
7:32 gives you some privacy from the rest of
7:33 the house.
7:37 Really great TV and fireplace wall, so
7:39 you could sit here and watch before you
7:40 go to bed.
7:42 So pretty. Well, and again, let the
7:44 light come in. I love this double-sided
7:47 vanity. You know, I like this concept.
7:49 So, this is such a great thing to have.
7:50 It really does give you your own
7:53 separate sides for privacy, but still
7:56 has that engagement between the two
7:58 people living here. And it allows you to
8:01 have all that natural light coming in
8:03 and allows you to have those incredible views.
8:04 views.
8:06 Beautiful views. All right. So, what is
8:08 out here?
8:10 Well, this becomes your little private
8:12 oasis to come out and you could do yoga.
8:15 We could get a jacuzzi and a spa out
8:18 here or just have a little quiet sitting
8:20 space that's right off your master bath.
8:21 I love it. This is a good place to put
8:22 the cold plunge. Yes.
8:23 Yes.
8:25 So, ooh and ah for this closet. I love
8:27 the darker features in here. This turned
8:29 out great.
8:30 Yeah. Well, how about this? I mean, who
8:32 wouldn't want to have something like
8:35 this? So, we decided to make this really
8:38 feel like you're in a men's uh uh shop
8:39 essentially. And it has the dark
8:42 cabinetry and of course all the shelving
8:45 that you would need for your shoes and
8:49 purses and handbags and jewelry and and
8:51 of course all the clothing that you
8:53 could possibly do to fill it up.
8:54 Well, this looks like a Ralph Lauren boutique.
8:55 boutique. Yes.
