0:23 hey everybody it's Matt Smith out here
0:24 on the Range in beautiful uh muggy
0:26 Spring weather in Texas here at revly
0:28 Peak Ranch where our range is uh we're
0:30 out here doing some shooting and we
0:32 decided to put together a little
0:33 informational video for you because I
0:34 get a lot of questions about this uh guy
0:37 right here the sling and so we're going
0:38 to talk a little bit about the sling and
0:39 its relationship uh to your rifle here I
0:41 have my rifle slung in the in the right
0:43 way a lot of times when I'm at the range
0:45 I see people go to sling their weapons
0:47 and it's probably because they don't
0:49 have a lot of experience with rifles I
0:51 understand that that's what we're here
0:51 for we're here to teach you when I go to
0:53 sling my rifle I see a lot of people um
0:56 either put it on they'll neck sling it
0:58 like this that that's fine
1:01 or they tend to put their lead hand
1:03 through and then try to figure the sling
1:05 out and I see them struggling with it a
1:07 lot if you want an easy way to figure
1:08 out how to sling your rifle to get a
1:10 great crossbody sling uh all you do is
1:13 grab your rifle hold it in a safe way I
1:15 like this cuz my finger is nowhere near
1:16 the trigger I'm just holding it back
1:18 here by the butt stock I hold it just
1:19 like this I take my non-firing hand and
1:22 hold it Palm up and I just scoop the
1:23 sling up and out away from me like this
1:26 making this triangle like this this way
1:27 my barrels pointed in a safe Direction
1:29 my hand hands not on the uh the trigger
1:31 my fingers not on the trigger and I got
1:32 this orientation and then I just pull
1:34 this over my entire head like that so
1:37 when I go to sling a rifle I do it just
1:39 like that I just take the rifle pull the
1:41 sling out to the side like this Palm up
1:43 sling it over and then bring it B and
1:45 that's a great crossbody sling that's
1:46 cross body slinging a weapon you can
1:48 neck sling a weapon and we do that
1:50 sometimes especially if I have to switch
1:52 the weapon from one shoulder to the
1:53 other I don't want to have it cross body
1:55 slung because if I go to do that I won't
1:57 be able to get past right I wind up
1:59 choking myself out with the sling so the
2:01 first thing I'm going to do if I have to
2:02 switch to my other hand to shoot rifle
2:04 is immediately swim my arm through and
2:05 just neck sling it that way I can push
2:07 it out away from my body bring it to the
2:08 other shoulder make the switch to the
2:10 other side so this is a drill that we
2:12 work commonly switching from one
2:14 shoulder to the other to do that you're
2:16 going to want to be neck slung a lot of
2:17 times when I'm shooting shotgun I'll
2:18 just be neck slung like this that's okay
2:20 but if you spend the whole day like this
2:22 gets pretty tiring on the neck plus once
2:24 your cross body slung like this it holds
2:26 the weapon to you a lot tighter so if
2:27 you have to move and run and be Dynam
2:30 with the weapon it's a little tighter to
2:31 you and then we'll show you some tricks
2:32 with the sling where cross body sling
2:34 helps to secure the weapon to you but
2:37 generally when I go to sling a weapon
2:39 I'll I do it just like that I'll show
2:40 you one more time when I go to take it
2:41 off I do it just like that I'm I'm
2:43 holding the weapon finger off the
2:45 trigger I usually hold it by the for end
2:47 here or by the butt stock and I just
2:48 bring that butt stock over my head
2:50 keeping the barrel point in a safe
2:51 Direction and pull it out away from me
2:53 and then I can manage the sling around
2:55 me like this if I was going to hold it
2:57 always when I'm holding the weapon
2:58 especially I create every weapon as if
3:00 it's loaded I'm treating this one as
3:01 it's loaded I hold a pistol grip on my
3:03 finger straight along the lower receiver
3:05 here again one more time all I can do is
3:07 hold the weapon like this Palm up scoop
3:09 the sling bring it over my head now I
3:11 got a good cross body sling so if that's
3:13 not something that you're used to or
3:15 you're just working into tactical rifle
3:16 shooting a sling is to a rifle what a
3:19 holster is to a pistol I wouldn't walk
3:21 around with a rifle that doesn't have a
3:23 sling you want to make sure that you
3:24 have a sling for it because that's how
3:26 you're going to hold it the body also
3:27 when it comes to transition drills which
3:29 we teach in our transition course if I
3:31 have to transition from the rifle right
3:34 it runs out of ammo or I get some kind
3:35 of stoppage in the rifle if I have to
3:37 transition that to my pistol I want to
3:40 make sure that I got that sling and the
3:42 sling is a lifesaver here because as I
3:45 go to transition of the pistol what I'll
3:46 do is I'll control the weapon down and I
3:49 rotate the weapon as I bring it down
3:51 when I do that you'll see the magazine
3:53 Lins up on the inside of the sling and I
3:54 control it down it actually locks to my
3:56 body so it stays connected to my body
3:59 right there as I go for my pistol I'll
4:01 do that in real time for you so if I was
4:03 shooting and for some reason had to
4:05 transition my pistol I control that down
4:07 go for the pistol draw the pistol and I
4:09 can go to work with the pistol bring it
4:11 back check my surroundings safely
4:13 holster and then I can bring the weapon
4:15 back up get it into operation so when
4:17 you're working transitions like we here
4:19 like we are here today it gets me
4:21 thinking about the sling and common
4:23 problems people have with mounting the
4:24 sling and understanding what it's for
4:26 and then how that relates to the
4:27 transition and how it's designed to
4:29 control P the weapon down and hold the
4:30 weapon in a place where the barrel stays
4:32 in a safe place allows me access to my
4:34 pistol and I can use it so if you want
4:36 to pack practice transition drills
4:37 that's how we do it that's the that's
4:39 the way to do it control it down old
4:41 school they used to just drop the rifle
4:42 I'm not a big fan of that a lot of times
4:44 that just winds up hitting you in
4:45 uncomfortable places so best thing to do
4:47 control it down go for your pistol then
4:50 you can make your draw and make your
4:51 pickup shots for the for the pistol uh
4:54 largely slings are are underutilized by
4:56 people people don't realize just how
4:58 useful a sling could be it's not just
5:00 for holding your rifle here it's not
5:01 just your rifle holster um you can use
5:03 it when you have to shoot accurately at
5:05 greater distances or you need to improve
5:07 your grip on the weapon I'll show you
5:09 how to do that here now the sling that
5:11 I'm shooting is the sheep dog response
5:13 uh quick adjusting sling that we provide
5:15 it has a quick adjustment this little T
5:17 Bar in the back if I reach back my hand
5:18 and I drive that thing forward it takes
5:20 all the slack out of the sling and if I
5:21 want to put the slack back in the sling
5:23 I quickly pull it back and it will
5:24 loosen It Up all In a quick throw with a
5:26 hand there are many on the market like
5:28 that but this one's really fast and
5:30 that's why I like it and so if I bring
5:32 the weapon to bear and I have to bring
5:33 it up to bear and I want to make a shot
5:35 it's a really hard shot to just reach
5:36 back pull that forward and that'll
5:38 tighten that sling that pulls it tighter
5:40 into my shoulder then if I really wanted
5:42 to tighten it up I'm going to circle
5:43 around the sling and back to the rifle
5:45 like this that really pulls it into my
5:47 shoulder hard right here so it's really
5:49 built a frame between the rifle and my
5:51 shoulder and it's pulled in tight to my
5:53 hand I could loop around this way too
5:55 and be up under the sling if I want to
5:57 drive my hand forward or back either way
5:59 all that's doing is taking more tension
6:01 out of the sling pulling it tighter to
6:03 my neck and deeper into the pocket of my
6:05 shoulder so it's really deep here and I
6:07 get a really stable platform to shoot
6:09 from so if I got to shoot from standing
6:11 over distance this makes it a much
6:13 better shot for me and then when I want
6:15 to loosen back up simply take my hand
6:17 out quick pull back and the sling is
6:19 nice and loose again nice and
6:20 comfortable for me if I'm shooting
6:22 between rounds if I'm shooting
6:23 competitively or I got to reload or do
6:25 something else it allows me to loosen it
6:26 up and get to my gear hey in this day
6:28 and age QD is the way to go like this is
6:31 a quick detach sling by QD means quick
6:34 detach this is a quick detach sling it's
6:36 just a magpole quick detach and I have
6:37 several mounting points some are better
6:39 for others so this is nice when I'm
6:42 slick as I am now I just have a shirt on
6:44 under I'm out on the Range because I
6:46 have it at a far forward point but if I
6:48 was wearing more kit say I was wearing
6:49 armor and I have a lot of Kit I can undo
6:51 the quick detach little push pull it
6:53 back to a farther back and that gives me
6:55 more sling to get around my gear or if I
6:58 need to if I needed next sling it it
7:00 lets me sling it a little bit lower if
7:01 I'm going to be doing a lot of round
7:03 barrier stuff shoulder to shoulder it
7:05 just gives me more throw with it the the
7:07 reason I get to do that is because I
7:09 have it set up with a quick detach I can
7:11 just unhook it from one point and hook
7:13 it to another like that also if it gets
7:14 fouled on something and I really need to
7:16 get off I can just hit the quick detach
7:17 in the back pull it off and over and get
7:20 it off if it's like pulling my ear
7:22 protection off and people are shooting
7:24 or if it really gets fouled on my kit
7:26 somewhere where I can't see I can just
7:28 quick detach it get the r get it safe
7:30 get the rifle off and get working and
7:32 figure out where it's hung up on my gear
7:34 so that's just a quick couple tips for
7:35 how to use your sling uh once you get
7:37 good at using your sling it does improve
7:39 your rifle shooting significantly does
7:41 make the weapon more comfortable to
7:42 carry it does give you many more options
7:44 when you're shooting if you guys can
7:45 think of anything else any other tips
7:47 that you'd like to hear about leave them
7:48 in the comments if there's some tip that
7:50 I forgot to tell you while we're making
7:51 this video uh go ahead and throw it in
7:53 the comments let us know uh check out
7:55 all our videos uh on our YouTube sheep
7:57 dog response and then watch out for more
7:59 instructional videos and more shooting
8:01 videos and we'll see you on uh YouTube
