0:03 hi i'm erin spain welcome to my channel
0:04 today i'm going to show you how to
0:06 refinish a bathtub on a major
0:09 budget this bathtub is in a rental
0:10 property that we are getting ready to sell
0:11 sell
0:13 so it wasn't in our budget to replace
0:15 the bathtub this was a great alternative
0:17 this is a temporary solution it is not
0:19 long term but it's a great way to make
0:20 over a tub
0:21 on a budget if you can't afford to
0:23 replace it now the refinishing kit that
0:25 i'm using cost about 25 bucks
0:27 so if you have all of the other supplies
0:28 on hand already which you might
0:31 you could do this for 25 now even if you
0:32 have to buy
0:34 absolutely all of the supplies needed
0:35 you can still do this for under 100
0:37 bucks so i'm gonna walk you through how
0:39 i did it i'm gonna link to everything i
0:41 used in the description box below
0:42 if you have any questions please leave
0:43 those in the comment section and if you
0:45 haven't already please subscribe to my
0:47 channel and click the bell icon
0:49 alright let's get started okay so i'm
0:51 over at the townhouse getting ready to
0:52 refinish the bathtub
0:54 this is the product i'm using it's the
0:57 rust-oleum tub and tile refinishing kit
0:59 i have absolutely no experience with
1:00 this product
1:02 whatsoever so i'm just crossing my
1:04 fingers and hoping this is going to work
1:07 there is a short demo video on home
1:08 depot's website on
1:10 the product page for this which was
1:12 really helpful but i thought it might
1:14 also be helpful to show you somebody
1:15 actually really using it and kind of
1:17 giving my commentary on it so that's
1:19 what i'm gonna do today
1:21 okay here's the tub before now it looks
1:23 dirty but that's actually where the
1:24 finish has worn off
1:26 it appears that this tub has been
1:28 painted or refinished before
1:29 the first step was to prep the tub which
1:31 was actually the most time-consuming
1:32 part of the process
1:34 first i used a razor blade to remove the
1:36 caulk around the edges of the tub
1:38 and i do still need to re-caulk this so
1:39 when i show you the after you'll notice that
1:40 that
1:41 it hasn't been caulked yet but i will be
1:43 doing that very soon
1:45 sometimes it's super easy to remove and
1:47 will pull off in long strips and other
1:48 times it's really stubborn and you just
1:50 have to chip away at it with your razor
1:52 blade which was mostly the case here
1:55 next i used comet and an abrasive sponge
1:56 to clean the tub
1:58 the instructions recommend cleaning with
2:00 lime away also but i didn't have any on
2:01 hand so i didn't bother with that step
2:03 it didn't seem like this particular tub
2:05 needed it but you can assess your own
2:06 situation and determine whether you feel
2:08 that's necessary
2:10 after cleaning with comet i did also
2:11 clean it with bleach which i don't have
2:13 footage of but again this is a step you
2:15 can decide whether you feel is necessary
2:16 or not
2:18 after the tub was clean i used sandpaper
2:20 to rough up the surface a bit
2:22 the instructions recommend using 400 to
2:23 600 grit
2:31 after sanding i used a tack cloth to
2:33 remove dust and debris and to make sure
2:34 the surface of the tub was completely
2:36 clean and smooth
2:38 tack cloth has a wax coating that dust
2:39 will stick to so it's great for removing
2:46 next i used painters tape to tape around
2:47 the edges of the tub
2:49 and the drain and anywhere i didn't want
3:04 to get the epoxy
3:06 i also laid down a plastic drop cloth to
3:11 i allowed the tub to dry completely
3:14 before starting the refinishing process
3:15 i cannot stress this enough the fumes
3:17 are extremely potent so you will need a
3:20 respirator and fans for ventilation
3:23 this epoxy acrylic refinishing kit comes
3:24 with two cans
3:26 the base and the activator first i
3:28 stirred each can individually
3:30 and then i poured the activator into the
3:32 base can and stirred it for two minutes
3:44 i poured it into a small paint tray and
3:46 used a four inch roller to apply it
3:48 i just painted it similarly to how i
3:49 would paint a wall but with horizontal
3:51 strokes instead of vertical
3:53 i tried to overlap each stroke to ensure
3:55 that i was keeping a wet edge line the
3:56 whole time
3:58 and i used a small foam brush to get
3:59 into nooks and crannies and apply the
4:05 i allowed the first coat to dry for an
4:07 hour and then i went back in and applied
4:09 a second coat the exact same way
4:11 by the way i did also paint the front of
4:24 the instructions say to remove the
4:26 painters tape an hour after applying the
4:28 second coat but i only waited
4:30 about 20 to 30 minutes or so because i
4:31 didn't want that coat to dry too much
4:33 before removing the tape
4:34 because i didn't want the tape to pull
4:37 away any of the epoxy
4:39 and of course my camera died before i
4:41 peeled the tape off so please enjoy this
4:49 okay so i'm back at the townhouse i
4:51 worked on the tub yesterday
4:53 and my camera died right as i was
4:55 peeling away the painters tape after the
4:56 last coat
4:58 so i haven't seen it yet except i peeled
5:01 the tape off and then i left immediately
5:03 because the fumes were so strong so i
5:04 haven't seen it since it dried i'm gonna
5:06 take you upstairs and we're gonna go
5:07 look at it together
5:10 um the one thing i will say is the fumes
5:11 are so strong
5:13 that they're still strong today a day
5:15 later when i walked in
5:17 it hit me immediately so definitely wear
5:19 a respirator for this project
5:23 all right let's go all right so
5:26 moment of truth here okay
5:30 here's what i will say it's not perfect
5:32 but it is a million times better than
5:34 before i'm gonna
5:35 give you a little shot of the inside of
5:37 the tub and i'll show you before and
5:40 after so you can see the difference but
5:42 it'll do it's a temporary solution it's
5:43 obviously nothing that's going to last
5:44 long term
5:46 but it'll do for now while we put this
5:47 place on the market
5:49 and i'm sure the new owners will
5:52 eventually want to replace it so all in
5:53 all i would say
5:55 it was time and money well spent
5:56 definitely great alternative if you
6:04 and now for the outtake major budget
6:08 now thank you car
