Hello Miguel, did you know that in some
schools, students and teachers are
measuring their carbon footprint, that is, they
are calculating how many
greenhouse gases are generated in the different
activities and processes of their schools. And do you
know why they do this? Because knowing the
carbon footprint helps to tackle
climate change. You can also
help measure your school's carbon footprint.
To do this, follow these three steps.
Step one: Identify the sources of
emissions. Have you ever thought about
how your school generates greenhouse gases?
Your emissions come from
various sources, mainly
vehicular transport of students,
teachers, and workers to get to
school, the consumption of energy to
light the school and turn on
electronic devices, the consumption of materials
for school such as paper, food, and
computers, and the generation of
solid waste from
school activities. There are also other sources
of missions associated with schools.
But these are the
main ones. Step two: Calculate the
emissions. To calculate
your school's emissions, first, choose an
emissions category, for example,
vehicular transport. Then define a period of
time, say a month. Now use an
indicator related to
vehicular transport, for example, gallons of
gasoline. Then estimate how many gallons of
gasoline have been used. consumed in a month for
students, teachers, and workers to
get from their homes to school.
Finally, multiply this amount of
gallons by the emission factor for
gasoline, a constant that allows you to
pour gallons of gasoline into
greenhouse gases. The result will be
the total greenhouse gas emissions
from the burning of
gasoline, expressed in units of
carbon dioxide equivalent. Then
repeat this operation for the rest of the
emission categories, each with its
own indicators and
emission factors. After doing the calculations, add
all the results together. And you will get
your school's monthly carbon footprint.
For more information, use the
online carbon calculator and review the
the
educational materials. Step three: Analyze the
results. Carefully analyze the
carbon footprint you found. Ask
questions like: What are the
activities that generate the most
greenhouse gases in your school? Have
emissions increased or decreased
since last month? Why,
etc.? Then, look for ways to reduce your
carbon footprint. Involve your
friends and your teachers to
find some measures so that your
school emits fewer greenhouse gases.
In this way, your
school's carbon footprint will be reduced. And you
will have helped to confront
climate change. Finally, remember. Just
as you can measure
your school's carbon footprint, you can also measure your
own. In this case, evaluate your
transportation, your energy use, and your
personal consumption; that is, only the
greenhouse gases
directly associated with you. Check out the
personal calculator on the website. There you can find your
personal carbon footprint. We are responsible for stopping
climate change, and every little action we
take counts. Calculate your
personal carbon footprint and that of your school.
