The Spanish-American War was triggered by American business interests in Cuba, support for Cuban rebels, the sinking of the USS Maine, and sensationalized "yellow journalism," ultimately resulting in Cuban independence and the United States emerging as a global power with new overseas territories.

the following presentation is on the
causes and results of the Spanish
American war so while you're viewing
this and listening to this presentation
you should have your document called
causes and results of the Spanish
American war open in a side by side pain
go the first cause of the Spanish
American war is the fact um that
Americans wanted to protect their
business interests in Cuba so make sure
you fill in that blank with the word
business and one of the main examples of
American business interests in Cuba is
the sugar industry okay so Americans are very
very
concerned um with Spain controlling Cuba
and the fact that their business might
suffer with the sugar
industry and take the time to look at
the pictures on each slide as we
go the next cause of the Spanish
American war is that Americans supported
Cuban Rebels against Spain so again fill
in the blank there with Rebels um
America you know threw off the power of
the British during the American
Revolution and at this point in history
they decide to also support Cuba's
decision to break free from Spain and
the next cause of the Spanish American
war is that the USS Maine which is a
ship sunk in Havana Harbor Havana is a
city in Cuba it's their Capital City
okay and as you can see from the images
below you see the USS main over here on
the left and then the battleship and
painting of it being blown up okay so
the US United States is very upset about
the USS main being sunk because it is
one of their ships and they choose to
blame the Spanish in this instance and
therefore go to war with Spain okay no
one really knows exactly how the USS me
sunk they don't know if it was a bomb or
an electrical fire or something totally
unrelated to either of those things but
the United States chose to blame Spain
in this incident and you can see from
this picture over here on this on the
right hand
side that the Mast from the main is
currently in Arlington Cemetery so you
can go right down to Washington DC and
see the Mast from the USS main they
cemetery and your fourth and final cause
of the Spanish American war is yellow
journalism this kind of factors in with
the main here the sinking of the USS
main okay
uh make sure you filling that blank with
yellow and then also type the definition
next to definition in your notes the
definition of yellow journalism is
dishonest and exaggeration in the
presentation of news for the purpose of
sensationalism okay so look at these
headlines over here to the right
destruction of the warship main was the
work of an enemy okay that headline is
designed to make you angry at this at Spain
Spain
okay so they really don't know how the
main was sunk but they jumped to the
conclusion that it was Spain and they
want to sensationalize this and make it
exciting for the
readers okay so here they also you also
see a reward posted $50,000 reward for
detection of the perpetrator of the main
outrage so if we find out who did it you
get $50,000 in a
reward okay and then at the bottom you
see where it says the naval officers
think that the was destroyed by a
Spanish mine okay so yellow journalism
is an
exaggeration it's a dishonest
presentation of what happened in order
to sensationalize it in the
news Okay pause this video at this point
and please complete the activity called
the Spanish American war events before
continuing with this presentation so we
just went walked through the causes
you're going to look through the events
of the Spanish amican war and then once
you're done completing the events
activity return to this video to
continue with the results of the war so
what happened
after all right results of the Spanish
American war continue to fill in the
blanks on your causes and results
document Cuban independence from Spain
okay so as a result of America's
supporting these Cuban Rebels Cuba
becomes an independent country and is no
longer under control of Spain and you
can see here in this map and you already
labeled it on your maps how close Cuba
is to Florida you can see why the United
States didn't want Spain to be that
close to them their influence to be
there okay and you can see another Cuban
right the United States gained territories
territories
overseas okay so after the war with
Spain which the United States won they
took control over some of the Spanish
territories one of those is Puerto Rico
one is Guam and one is the Philippines
and you can see them circled on the map
below so you have Guam Philippines and
Puerto Rico became US territories so
these lands are going to be under
control of the United States they're not
States they're territories so they're
under us
control so you have over here in the
Pacific you have the Philippines and you
have Guam and over here in the Caribbean
you have Puerto Rico okay Cuba does not
become a US Territory they become an independent
country the United States emerged as a
world power before this time the United
States focuses mostly on domestic
affairs those things that are taking
place within the borders of the US after
the Spanish American War the United
States is going to show its interest in
foreign affairs and that is the things
that are going on in other countries
around the world and because they won
this Spanish American War the United
States is going to show that it is a
world power it's a powerful country not
to be
overlooked so what what is important to
understand about this this corresponds
with the bottom of your document
the United States expanded its interest
in world affairs and acquired new
territories this is important because
again it shows how powerful the United
States has become and that the
traditionally more powerful European
countries need to take notice of the
United States and not discount it in
foreign and world
affairs this concludes the video on

American war please see your teacher
