let's do a quick review of our wall
parts using our models
so we have
plates they run horizontal
that this is my bottom plate this is my
top plate
on top of my top plate i have a cap
plate both of these together we would
call a double top plate
on each end i have a vertical stud this
is my n stud
this is my n stud i have all of these
common studs in between and they're on
regular intervals we will call layout
your layout could be 24 on center 16 on
center or 12 on center
moving on to our rough openings
a door rough opening and on the very top
i have my header it works like a bridge
it carries the weight down through my
jacks to my bottom plate i have a jack
on either end or either side of my rough
opening i have a king stud that's my
last full stud that is connected to my
rough opening and my studs fall
on layout with my common studs these are
partial studs that
land every 24 inches on this wall on my
window i have the same parts i have my
header that carries my weight to my jack
studs my jack studs carry the weight
down to my bottom plate my king studs
are the very outside parts of my rough
opening and they are my last full
vertical stud that is related to that
rough opening my stud carries
the load from my double top plate down
to my header and then i have my sill
which is my bottom horizontal piece and
i have a stud on layout that
follows this upper layout down here i
have one thing here to point out on this
wall that might be a little confusing on
this side you see that i have one king
stud it's a full stud on this side i
have what looks like two king studs
what's really happening here is that i'm
following my layout i have 24 on center
so i have common stud 24 on center
common stud stud 24 on center
and then my layout falls right here
which is outside of this king stud so
we're going to put this stud in our
layout is very important that we don't
deviate from it so even if it's next to
