0:22 games 26 times I've been trusted to take
0:23 the game-winning
0:25 shot and
0:29 missed I failed over and over and over
0:30 again in my life [Music]
0:32 [Music]
0:36 and that is why I succeed 9,000 missed
0:39 shots we has failed
0:41 before more than
0:45 once we're here does not like
0:48 failing well no no buzzword gets more
0:51 attention or is more widely desired than
0:53 the word success people are spending
0:56 hours months years in the search for
0:59 Success the reality is not all achieve it
1:00 it
1:03 or at least not all persist long enough
1:05 to achieve it because of one fundamental
1:09 element of success
1:12 failure all of you has ra raised your
1:14 hands all of you have failed
1:17 before I have failed many times
1:22 before and that is a fundamental part of
1:25 success the question then is which one
1:29 is greater my desire to succeed or my
1:30 fear to
1:33 fail I wish to discuss three principles
1:35 today that if applied will impact Our
1:38 Lives now and forever number
1:42 one don't quit too early most obstacles
1:45 we Face are here to test our character
1:48 not to stop us who here has heard of
1:50 NCAA coach John Wooden
1:53 before John wooden's perhaps the
1:55 greatest college basketball coach in the
1:58 history of the world he has won 12
2:00 championships 11 of which were
2:03 consecutive titles the true
2:05 personification of success both on and
2:07 off the court but most people don't
2:10 spend any time trying to understand what
2:12 happened to John Wooden in his career
2:15 before all that success he went 16 years
2:17 without winning anything now think about
2:22 that 16 years and no titles then 12
2:25 years and 11 titles many people would
2:27 call phase one of his career a failure
2:30 but he called it preparation a common
2:32 excuse that I think all of you will be
2:35 able to relate to that we often use is
2:37 when something goes wrong is well it
2:40 didn't work out thus it's just not meant
2:43 to be right and we usually stop right
2:46 there but that's not how life works most
2:48 of the time I remember learning a lesson
2:51 from a professor in California he said
2:55 get in line and stay in line don't quit
2:57 too early number two there's no such
2:59 thing as failure if you learned a lesson
3:05 succeeded have you thought of that
3:07 before because we usually measure
3:11 failure or success by the out outcome
3:14 not by the effort but if you've given
3:17 your best you succeeded Robert kosaki
3:20 put it well when he said sometimes we
3:24 win sometimes we
3:26 learn and we usually when we win we tend
3:30 to party right but when we lose we tend
3:34 to ponder I have a professor at BYU who
3:35 has taught me a principle that at first
3:38 sound very uncomfortable he said and I
3:40 hope my boss is not here to to hear this
3:43 he said Eduardo go out there get a job
3:46 get paid to make mistakes and then go do
3:48 your own thing right so in his perspective
3:50 perspective
3:53 failure is a vehicle a friend not an
3:56 enemy it's a Connecting Point leading us to
3:57 to
3:59 success in other words the faster I
4:01 failed the faster I learn the faster I
4:04 learn the faster I succeed so maybe the
4:08 lesson here is grow and fail as as fast
4:10 as you
4:13 can just don't quote me on this
4:15 this
4:18 right just last year during the
4:20 recruiting season I was trying to find an
4:20 an
4:23 internship it's a big battle finding an
4:26 internship I had 16 interviews locked in
4:28 I was sure I was going to get an offer
4:31 but after all those 16 interviews I got
4:34 no offers I was frustrated and super
4:37 discouraged but then my father who is in
4:39 the audience today was wise enough to
4:41 come up to me and lift my vision said
4:43 son you've lost a few battles but the
4:45 war is still on this is part of the
4:47 process all the 16 interviews are going
4:50 to help you find what's best for you
4:53 just keep giving your best effort two
4:56 days later I had my 17th interview and
4:59 got the offer there's no such thing as failure
5:00 failure
5:03 number three the past does not equal the
5:05 future who here has been rejected by a
5:07 girl or a guy before and if you don't
5:13 liar well there a lot of people have not
5:15 raised their hands I'm surprised I'll raise
5:21 both well all of us have but the tragedy
5:23 of this experience is not the experience
5:25 itself it's the meaning that we usually
5:27 take home with us because I was rejected
5:30 then I'll be rejected again the past
5:33 will equal the future perfect formula for
5:35 for
5:38 misery the past does not equal the
5:41 Future Tony Robbins one of the greatest
5:44 teachers that I know has taught this
5:45 principle in a marvelous way he said and
5:47 if you're going to take anything home
5:49 from my talk take this principle the
5:51 only thing that keeps us from getting
5:54 what we want is the story we keep
5:56 telling ourselves about why we can't have
5:57 have
5:59 it the only thing that keeps us from
6:01 from getting what we want is the story
6:03 we keep telling ourselves about why we
6:07 can't have it reality is now is our
6:09 reality we can create our own story
6:11 we're all great storytellers we have a
6:13 blank page in front of us every day to
6:16 create a story based on our now truth
6:20 not our on our past truth I hope this
6:21 three principles have been beneficial to
6:24 you today don't quit too early there's
6:26 no such thing as failure the past does
6:28 not equal the future and next time when
6:30 you're facing challenges all of us which
6:32 will surely come to test our character
6:33 may we remember the words of Michael
6:36 Jordan greatest basketball player of all
6:39 history I failed over and over and over
6:44 in my life that's why I succeed thank [Applause]
