I've been seeing the Pandayan Bookshop for a long time, friends, but unfortunately
I haven't been inside of one yet. Because we
go to bookstores in malls like National Bookstore and Booksale more often.
That's why I was surprised when I found out that Pandayan started
right here in Caloocan. And because many of you also want
to know its story. So that's what we're going to talk about in this video, guys.
We will learn the history and the things you should
know about Pandayan Bookshop. But before we start,
I invite you to subscribe if you are new to my channel and

updated when I upload my new videos.
The story of Pandayan Bookshop began with its founder, Gerardo “Jun”
Villacorta Cabochan Jr. Jun's father, Gerardo “Gerry” Cabochan,
served as Congressman of the second district of Caloocan from 1987
to 1992. His mother, Clarita, was his inspiration
as an entrepreneur. Jun's mother's wish that he and his siblings could graduate
from a good school, that's why she thought of ways to make money. It was in
1956 when Clarita opened a small grocery store in Grace Park in
Caloocan. It was called CVC taken from the initials of her name Clarita
Villacorta Cabochan. CVC started out as just a little bit bigger than
today's sari-sari stores. But due to Clarita's good management, the grocery gradually
grew over the years. Along with the increase in the population of
Caloocan was the continuous development of CVC until it eventually became
a well-known supermarket that, apart from Caloocan, was also visited by the people
of Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela. And although he was still studying in college,
Jun also worked in the family business. He started in HR until
he eventually managed the supermarket which had several branches.
One day Jun thought of putting greeting cards and stationery in
a small corner of their supermarket. And in this small place
began what we know today as Pandayan Bookshop.
While managing CVC Supermarket, Jun Cabochan thought
of adding school and office supplies. He started putting
greeting cards and stationery in a small corner of their supermarket. These are
the times when it is fashionable among young people to collect
colorful stationery. In 1993, he made it a school and office
supplies section and separated it from the supermarket. Jun called the shop
Pandayan or the place where blacksmiths work. Maybe
you are familiar with "Panday," one of the most popular
characters in Philippine comics and movies made famous by "Da King" Fernando
Poe Jr. Panday or blacksmiths are those who shape metal to make swords or
swords and other tools. According to Jun, he chose the name "Pandayan" because
just like Blacksmith's shop where the metals are shaped, they also shape
the minds and hearts of the Filipino youth at the Pandayan Bookshop. Pandayan's
logo shows a dragon that symbolizes individual
power and a phoenix that symbolizes self-
transformation. And so Jun made Pandayan his own company because
he wanted to be free to try a different way of doing
business. Pandayan focuses on selling school and office
supplies, gift items, greeting cards and stationery pads. But
Pandayan did not do well in its first years. In the beginning, there were very
few people who shopped with them. It is a good thing that even though they are
separated, they are still inside CVC Supermarket because otherwise
they would have closed a long time ago.
When Pandayan Bookshop started, school and office supplies
weren't selling that much . So the years passed when
the store made almost no profit. Until Jun Cabochan created a successful format
for the store. Except school and office supplies he started added
other goods such as books, magazines, snacks and drinks,
sporting goods, arts and crafts and other items that students need.
Most of the books sold at Pandayan are locally
published textbooks and supplemental material. Some of their
bestsellers are books that are often read in schools such as
"Ibong Adarna," "Noli Me Tangere," and "El Filibusterismo." They also have books
from well-known publishers in the country such as Anvil Publishing, Visprint,
PSICOM and Precious Hearts. They also have foreign titles from
international bestsellers such as Nicholas Sparks who wrote The
Notebook and A Walk To Remember and Paulo Coelho who wrote The Alchemist.
Pandayan Bookshop went along with CVC's expansion. Its second
bookstore was built on the second floor of CVC Supermarket in Baliuag Bulacan. And
unlike the first branch in Caloocan which had poor sales,
Pandayan started to make a profit in its second branch. It was here that Jun decided
to focus on the provinces and build a stand-alone branch of Pandayan.
He did this in 1997 when he built the Pandayan Bookshop in Malolos,
Bulacan. This is Pandayan's first bookstore outside of CVC Supermarket. And
because of the continued success, Pandayan Bookshops were opened
in different parts of Luzon.
According to Jun Cabochan, one of the keys to Pandayan's success is
its unique culture and workers. Employees of
Pandayan Bookshop are called "Kapwa Panday." Even when they were just starting in
Caloocan and had less than ten employees, Jun was already preaching the culture
that he called the "Culture of Success." Jun wants "Kapwa Panday" to
have respect and concern for fellow human beings. You will hear many
stories of the little heroic deeds of the "Kapwa Pandays." They once
heard that there were two young siblings who did not have enough money for the
things they needed to buy. It is said that the employee who overheard collected
money from the "Kapwa Pandays" so that the siblings could buy it. There was also a
teacher who also lacked the money to buy the needed scientific
calculator and when one of the store managers found out about it,
he just subsidized it. Another thing that Jun teaches the "Kapwa Panday"
is to think and act as if they are also the Pandayan's owner.
In fact, 80 percent of the ideas to improve the
store come from the employees and not from the management. Jun also wants
"Kapwa Panday" to be part of Pandayan's success. One of the company's missions
is to fulfill what they call the Dream for "Kapwa Panday."
This is the dream for regular employees to have their own
house and lot, to have their children study in a good school, to eat
healthy food, to wear nice clothes and to go for a trip
every now and then. To achieve this, there are incentives given by the
Pandayan to "Kapwa Panday." They have something called profit sharing that
employees get annually and monthly. There are also two cooperatives
owned by the "Kapwa Pandays" from which they get a dividend every
year. And if desired, Pandayan employees
can also take a housing loan . Apart from vacations and sick leave, "Kapwa
Panday" are also paid 30 days of paid leave if there are children who
need to be taken care of in the hospital for a long time. "Kapwa Panday" also have a day's
pay if they need to attend family days or
celebrate an anniversary with their spouse. The love and concern that
Pandayan gives to employees is what drives "Kapwa
Panday" to improve their work and serve their patrons
without asking for anything in return. By 2020, "Kapwa Panday"
already reached 600 in 134 Pandayan stores. Half of them are
regular and permanent employees which is much higher
compared to other retail and food service establishments.
Like other businesses, the COVID-19
pandemic has had a big impact on Pandayan Bookshop. It is said that Pandayan is
non-essential so every 134 of its stores closed during the lockdown. According to
Jun this is one of the biggest challenges the company has faced. But here you can
see the culture of Pandayan and the "Kapwa Panday." Instead of just staring
at the house and watching what was happening, the people of Pandayan took action.
Using the goods from the closed Pandayan stores, the "Kapwa Pandays" assembled
face shields. They distributed it in different places in Luzon and even reached
Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, Marawi, Palawan and Sulu. Pandayan has given away more than
75,000 face shields. The Kapwa Pandays crossed the checkpoints,
walked, hitched and rode bicycles just to distribute face shields to the
needy countrymen. Pandayan overcame the
pandemic and now continues to taste success. And its culture is really
impressive, which I hope other
companies will emulate. Like Pandayan Bookshop, I hope all companies in the
country also have a culture that centers on "mabuting pagpapakatao,
pakikapagkapwa-tao at pagkamakatao."
