0:00 hey everybody welcome back you know it
0:02 seems like nobody can have a nice polite
0:04 conversation about politics well one
0:06 reason for that is differences and
0:08 ideology so smash that like button ever
0:11 so politely and let's get
0:16 started so APG focuses almost
0:19 exclusively on three ideologies
0:21 conservative liberal and libertarian in
0:24 the next two videos we're going to get
0:25 very specific on these ideologies and
0:27 explore their positions on economic and
0:30 social policies one of my goals in this
0:32 section is to try to help everybody
0:34 understand how it's possible that a
0:36 reasonable thinking person could ascribe
0:39 to each of these ideologies and present
0:41 the very best version of each of them
0:43 recall that political ideology refers to
0:45 a consistent set of ideas and beliefs
0:48 about the purpose and scope of
0:49 government how much power should the
0:52 government have and how big and strong
0:54 or small and weak should it be let's go
0:57 alphabetically conservatives typically
0:59 favor traditional American values
1:01 respect for authority Law and Order and
1:04 strong National Defense if you're not a
1:06 conservative you might respond
1:08 incredulously what's so great about
1:10 tradition history is full of bad stuff
1:13 we need to change there's a parable
1:15 known as chesterton's fence that might
1:17 shed some light imagine that you buy a
1:19 huge piece of land and one day as you're
1:22 inspecting your new property you
1:24 randomly come across a fence and you
1:26 have no idea why the fence is there so
1:29 you're inin Nation may be to pull the
1:31 fence up after all you don't know why
1:33 it's there but fences don't just spring
1:35 up out of the ground somebody put it
1:38 there and surely there was a reason why
1:40 they did it in fact they might have
1:43 known more about this land than you do
1:45 the moral of the parable is that changes
1:47 shouldn't be made until you understand
1:49 the reasoning of the current state of
1:51 affairs liberals AKA progressives are
1:54 usually very concerned with equality
1:56 both economically and socially and they
1:59 often favor a bigger stronger government
2:01 to try to legislate the equality that
2:03 they see as desirable people who aren't
2:06 liberal might wonder why it seems like
2:07 Liberals are always trying to change
2:09 things liberals typically view societal
2:11 problems as a struggle between the
2:14 oppressors and the oppressed and the
2:16 goal of liberals is to empower people
2:18 and groups that have been historically
2:20 disadvantaged or oppressed and they view
2:22 the power of government as a key method
2:25 to rebalancing power away from the
2:27 powerful oppressor group as such they're
2:30 much more comfortable than conservatives
2:32 with experimenting with new policies
2:34 focusing on what's presently wrong and
2:37 willing to try things that may or may
2:39 not improve things but they favor trying
2:42 something and then there's Libertarians
2:44 who are all about freedom and I mean all
2:47 about Freedom Libertarians favor a very
2:50 weak federal government whose main
2:52 purpose is to protect individual Freedom
2:55 really the only time it's okay to limit
2:57 somebody's freedom is to stop them from
3:00 infringing on another person's Freedom
3:02 Libertarians have ideas pretty similar
3:04 to a lot of the founders acknowledging
3:07 that there needs to be some governmental
3:08 power but they are super suspicious of
3:11 it having too much power they want
3:14 people to be free to make their own
3:15 decisions and live their own lives sure
3:18 there are a handful of things that it's
3:20 reasonable to use government for like
3:22 defense and protecting property rights
3:25 maybe roads and sewage systems but
3:27 beyond these basic tasks everything else
3:30 should be up to the people they are
3:32 extremely distrustful of the coercive
3:34 Powers governments have to force
3:36 citizens to do something and as such
3:38 they're pretty big fans of the Bill of
3:40 Rights okay so the title of this section
3:42 is ideologies of political parties among
3:45 the two major parties liberals tend to
3:47 find a home in the Democratic party
3:50 while conservatives are more likely to
3:51 be Republicans Libertarians though don't
3:54 fit neatly into either party there is a
3:56 Libertarian party which is the largest
3:58 of the third parties and some may choose
4:00 to hold their nose and vote for the
4:02 lesser of two evils and others might
4:04 just sit out the game all together so
4:06 these are the three groups that the AP
4:08 exam focuses on but I want to make the
4:10 disclaimer that there are plenty of
4:12 other ideologies out there and there are
4:14 Wars going on right now in the
4:16 Democratic and Republican parties over
4:18 the ideological direction of the party
4:21 there are portions of each party that
4:23 are much more populist in nature
4:25 advocating for much stronger
4:27 governmental power to achieve their
4:29 policy goals for Republicans it's more
4:31 of a nationalist populism focusing on
4:34 anti-immigration and anti-trade policies
4:36 that put into conflict with more
4:38 traditional conservatives for Democrats
4:41 the populist Wing sometimes
4:42 self-described as Democratic socialism
4:45 and wants much higher taxes and
4:47 significantly more government regulation
4:49 control of the economy and expansion of
4:52 government programs and the ideology of
4:54 Americans matters and influences public
4:56 policy this country has gone through
4:59 various some more liberal others more
5:01 conservative and not surprisingly when
5:04 one ideology dominates at a certain time
5:06 the policies of that era reflect that
5:09 okay only two videos left in this unit
5:11 and we're going to get a lot more
5:13 specific about the economic and social
5:15 policies of each ideology but until next
5:17 time this has been a l money production
5:22 thanks again for watching I hope that it
5:23 helped make sure to smash that like
5:25 button and subscribe and if you've
5:27 decided you're ready to kill it apgov
5:29 take take a look at the ultimate review
5:30 packet and I will see you in the next
5:33 video
