Garbage is one of the biggest environmental problems in our society. Research has confirmed that in Spain, for example, one person produces a kilo of garbage a day.
If we don't recycle this garbage, it accumulates and takes years to disappear. Garbage accumulation poses a serious challenge, as we are running out of space to store this waste.
The lack of environmental awareness of some citizens leads to the distortion of our environment. Sustainable waste management is essential for our planet; to ensure a healthier future.
Today many different projects have been taken into account to be able to deal with this problem. And many cities have started to change their waste management.
Many cities have chosen smart containers. Some use artificial intelligence to automatically sort recyclables and compress plastic and paper.
Other metropolises use filling sensors, which monitor the level of container filling in real time
and send alerts for efficient collection, to optimize routes and reduce unnecessary trips.
Data analysts process the collected data to obtain information about waste generation patterns, facilitating waste reduction decisions.
An example of the mentioned technology appeared in 2012, in the city of Oxford, with the installation of innovative solar containers.
These, in addition to running on solar energy to compact waste, sent e-mail alerts to city officials when they were nearly full.
But we don't have to go that far to see the progress, containers with computer systems and card readers can already be seen in Donostia.
With personal cards, each resident records the amount of waste they recycle, and here's the surprise!
Discounts are given to those who recycle the most, promoting recycling and a more sustainable environment.
