Hello, I'm Yumi in the chapter Toto,
we will talk about Rizal's high school and
college life, what were
his experiences as a
University Student at Ateneo, and
various schools in Europe such as the
Central University of Madrid.
We will also discuss his life
abroad, what were
his activities in Japan, USA, Hong
Kong, and various countries in Europe.
Above all, we will find out what
the propaganda movement means
and what does it have to do with the national
hero. Before we get to
Rizal's studies at Ateneo, let's first take a quick look at
Maybe you have an idea of who
they are or if not,
you have likely encountered that form, especially
last year because it became popular on
social media. They went viral, but it wouldn't have
been on their 150th death anniversary
that year if not for
this clip. The three Catholic priests,
Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, who were
sentenced to death during the
Spanish era, are better known as the
blacks. marjo marjo wait just wait just
I forgot the rules Wait just
I'm really weak at I am so sorry
k ste
Yeah majoha majoha
is wrong Actually It's G burza
gza The netizens' reactions to this are so bad,
comments, memes and
articles are the result of the incident.
Commenters say that the generation
today is all about tektok, all they know is
that they are all about flirting and flirting.
The reactions
from this clip range from concerns about
the educational system to being
borderline malicious, it even comes to
the point that someone even made a
parody song for the incident.
Tandang Sora is not known. But tiktok is
is
known. Are those who go to school
still have a bad idea, science in their
minds, they want to be
painters? Where are those who
were so bad at the Lar bridge, but they're
in SLEX.
I'll be honest with you. I'm more
disappointed in the bashing the internet
gave than the housemates' answers.
This is because I don't really blame The
housemates for not knowing Who the gumburza
gumburza [Music]
[Music]
are now before you hit the dislike
button I didn't hit it I have
reasons why well first because
I'm biased towards gdata in ml48 so I don't like
seeing him bullied Oh my God this is
just sad double dislike but on a
serious note let's put the context first
this clip quiz B
they were playing so it's easy to judge the
housemates if You're just lying in
your house comfortably facing the
screen you don't feel the pressure
of the gamer it's not in your brain that a
million people are watching you if you were one of those who
criticized them before and you're thinking about it
now that's just basic knowledge
Yumi Even though the pressure is young Oh
can you answer it Okay let's test
martyrs now the question What is the full name of the three
three [Music]
[Music] martyr priests
if your answer is Mariano Gomez Jose
Burgos and Hainto Zamora then Okay
You're right and I would like to apologize and
I'm probably wrong quiz B is really super easy
and they should answer it with
That's right, that's what I'm going to say if
you noticed that this is not Gomez.
It's not Burgos and it's not
Zamora. It's Gomez. It's Burgos
and it's Zamora. But if you noticed
that I jumbled their names,
then I would like to apologize again.
Sorry for tricking you. The passive
aggressiveness of my voice and I should
have known better. That's what I'm going to say
if you noticed that
the surname Gomez is not spelled with a z
but With an S. According to Sou H Gco's book
about the three martyr priests, when
Mariano took up Parochial
work, he discovered that he had similar
names, so what
Mariano did was change his last name
from Gomez with a z to Gomez With an S.
So he chose the letter s to
identify his identity as a
list writer, which means you are proficient in the
Tagalog language. Gomez With an S was also what
Mariano used before he was killed.
We can see this in his
signed last will and testament. If
you still noticed, then fine,
I just embarrassed myself, but
another reason why I didn't
bless them is because it is unlikely that
you remember everything that was taught in SAO especially
in subjects that are very detail
oriented, this course is an example of that,
you won't
remember everything that happened in Rizal's life, there's a
good chance that
you'll forget who his siblings were or
who his friends were or the years or
what his exact height was, but is it
just because you can't recall it? That doesn't
mean you're stupid, of course
not. While it is tempting to blame that
the current generation is just lazy in
learning, we should also consider the
educational system's effectiveness in
teaching history. How is
history taught in our schools? Let's take
gumburza as an example. Yes,
they were taught in Social Studies, but when was it
still elementary? If you're one of those who have
difficulty collecting what
you learned in college, then what about what
you studied when you were a child?
You can argue that there are books
and the internet there, they can
get information. Well, it's true
that there are always books and the
internet to turn to for information.
Students may not use it due to a lack of
intellectual curiosity. Developing
intellectuals Curiosity could Begin in
schools where teachers Can instill it in
their students however not everyone is
fortunate enough to have a good teacher
If your teacher is good,
there is still a chance that they are not
very good at it or that they have skipped it because
their time is limited or because the
the
school they attend has too much work, of course
the student also has a part in this if
a student really doesn't want to study and does
n't struggle
with life and mental issues No matter how
hard or good the teacher is and the beauty
of his school then we can't
do anything But saying that we don't have an
educational Crisis problem wouldn't
solve anything And what are
these netizens saying that there is nothing wrong with the
educational system, the
grammar of the Dems is wrong Okay,
we are getting a little far away according to Thomas, a case
in his book the imitation of
Christ if it seems to you that you know
many things and understand them well
enough know at the same time that there
are many things of which you are
ignorant be not high-minded But rather
acknowledge your ignorance hopefully the next
time there is a clip like
this and Trust me, there is more, let's refer
ourselves to our
judgment, please don't call someone stupid,
lazy, stupid, and flirty
because they just answered wrong on
a quiz because they are not like that
in fact if we watch the
whole of this Game, we will see that
many of them answered correctly, what is
this place that is also called the summer
capital of the Philippines, please answer
that, Baguio, Baguio City, please correct,
complete the full name of our
national hero, Dr. Jose Riz
Merkado, the Philippine American War, you
you are correct, Laguna,
correct, after the incident, the
housemates went to a museum and took
the exam again, and you know what,
they got a decent score, out of
nine correct answers, I will end this
rant with this quote from the historian
Shao Chua in his take on the incident of
Majoha, when a personality makes a mistake in history,
I don't answer
to judge, you are crazy, I know
you are not, No, I'm not talking, because
this is an opportunity for public historians
like me to discuss, it
helped talking about the importance of
history to the people an error in
history is a chance for improvement The
quality of history is not measured by the
quality of quiz B this is not memorization
and trivia but connecting
things to the larger narrative of
our history as a nation Whether
you have an idea or not let's still go back to
the gumburza just for Clarity it is
important for us to know what they have
experienced because
their death in 1872 had a great influence on the
Independence movement and on the life of
Rizal the historian
Teodoro Aguncillo said there is no Philippine
History before
1872 I note that there are many versions
of this incident and the reason for this is because
we do not have a record of their trial
so what we will use in this video is
Edmund Plot's account so that's what
we will use because that's what the
ribbon used so that's what we will use because
that's what La Solidaridad used
in 1892 and I have also made
his ppt and I don't want to change it so on January
20 1872 the Filipinos
working in an Arsenal or The workers
at the Fort San Felipe Cavite weapons factory were
shocked because
their meager salaries were unfairly
cut off because their
privileges of not paying
taxes were taken away. They also had to pay
a fee so that they would not be forced to
work. Those privileges had been with
them since 1740.
But this was drawn out to have a new
Governor General in the Philippines, Rafael
de Esquierdo, because the
Filipino workers were so angry at what the
Governor General had done. On the evening of
that very day, they began to
revolt against the Spaniards. The events
that occurred here are
now called the Cavite Mutiny, but only
because the Spaniards were so powerful.
This revolt ended quickly. It only lasted for
two days, according to the story by od
Corpus. What followed the Cavite Mutiny
was a period best described as the
terror of 1872. The Filipinos
who participated in the revolt were imprisoned, some were
killed, some were sent everywhere,
there were soldiers who were sent as fin iring squads, and
the most unforgettable thing for the people was
Garoting of three priests on
February 17, 1872, three
priests, Mariano Gomez Jose Burgos
and Cinto Samura, were killed with a garo in
Bagong Bayan and the reason why they were
killed was because they were the two Master minds
or the brains behind the failed uprising.
I will not go into specifics why the
Spaniards were so infuriated
because it is a rather long explanation but
if you're interested in learning about it
there is a video. This is where Shao Chua's story was made.
What you need to know right
now is the impact of
their deaths. Their execution that was supposed
to silence people sparked a wave of anger
and resentment among the Filipinos.
The Filipinos were angry because they knew
the three priests were innocent and
they were killed even though they were not guilty. The
incident showed that the Spanish
authorities were willing to kill
innocent people just to maintain
their power, which was easy
for them to exploit and not to
value the rights and
dignity of a Filipino. What does this have to do
with Rizal? This Pasano,
Rizal's Queen, was a friend,
student, and housemate of his father. jose
burgos and pasano witnessed
how a man was killed who
he filmed with the guide and support when
gumburza was killed young Rizal was only 10 years old
his brother pasano
told him why
beating his
best friend with a club was unjust and this story left
an indelible impression on Jose Rizal
inspiring him to become an advocate for
social justice and we can see
this in his writings in the letter He
sent to Mariano Ponce in 1889 he wrote
without 1872 There Will Be now neither
Plaridel nor Haina nor Sancho nor the
valiant and generous Filipino
expatriates in Europe without 1872 Rizal
would have been a jesuit and instead of
writing the noly metang he would have wr
something entirely different at the S of
those injustices and cruelties though
still a child my imagination awoke and I
swore to dedicate myself to avenge One
Day so many victims and with this idea
in mind I have been studying And this
can be read in all my works and writings
God will someday give me an opportunity
to carry out my promise as a
tribute to the martyrs
Rizal dated his second novel
memory June
1872 four months have passed since
the killing of the three priests with a
club Rizal's mother Donia
Teodora is still in prison for a
treason case that has not been
proven But first Rizal had to put aside the
noise of the world
because he had to focus on
his own future he had to
prepare for his
high school studies on June 1st
Jose went with his older brother
Pasano to Manila there
Jose took the exam at the College of San Juan de
Latan the school his father wanted
for him and he passed it when
they returned to Kalemba
His father Don Kiko changed his mind Don Kiko said
You know it seems better
if instead of studying in Salitran you study there
with its fierce rival Ateneo
I can't blame Don Kiko for
changing his decision and giving his I was a
child in the 19th century because
Ateneo was the most prestigious
University in the entire Philippines and the
best place for
a man to study secondary education. The
reason for this is that Ateneo was
run by
Jesuits at the time. The Jesuits
held rigorous intellectual standards and
taught courses that were like
college courses even though
the students were only in high school. Ateneo also
emphasized religious instruction, advanced
education, rigid discipline, physical culture,
and the cultivation of the arts
such as music, drawing, and painting. Where did
Rizal and
his older brother go back to Manila to
enroll, but they were not
immediately accepted into Ateneo. Why was the one
on the college register then, father
Magin Fand, and he refused to
admit Rizal for two reasons: first,
he registered late, and
second, his father was still pale,
for an 11-year-old, but it was good
that with the help of Manuel Burgos, the
nephew of Father Burgos, he was accepted
into the institution. The name he used was
Merkado, if not Jose Rizal.
because he could use their last name
Merkado because that last name was
popular with the authorities that's why he was
popular because he was a friend of his older
brother Pasano Mercado. Father Burgos
took this Rizal Bachelor of
Arts at Ateneo a six year program
that exposes a student to five
subjects there is the Christian doctrine
languages of Spanish Latin Greek and
French history and geography which includes
world history and geography history
of Spain and the Philippines there is also
Mathematics and Sciences which
includes geometry trigonometry
mineralogy chemistry physics botany and
zoology and the Classic disciplines
which is poetry rhetoric and philosophy it is
also quite unique that the teaching
we do is to encourage healthy
competition the classes in one
section were divided into two
groups so that they can constantly
compete against each other the first
group was the Roman Empire which was made up of
interns or magaran who lived
inside the school the second group
was the Catalan Jenan Empire which was
made up of externs or students who
lived outside the school also inside
computer
beer Now there is Now that we have a background on
Ateneo, let's find out what
Rizal's personal experience was while
he was a student
there. On Rizal's first day
at Ateneo, he first listened to
mass in the university chapel and the time
team prayed to God. I hope he will give
him Guidance and success
after the Mass. He entered
his class here. He noticed that
he had many classmates who were
Spanish mestizos and Filipinos because he was a
newcomer and not yet very
proficient in Spanish. Rizal was
only at the end of the class as an externa.
However, he quickly proved
that he was a diligent and capable
student after just a week.
He was already promoted to a higher rank
in the following days.
His rank continued to climb and
after just one year, he
became the Emperor of their Empire
in recognition of his Achievement.
Rizal was awarded a religious picture.
If you are a little bored with the prize,
promise that he is very happy here.
He said in his student memoir how
pleased I was when I won my first prize
so that Rizal could become a more professional in
Spanish. He took private lessons at Santa
Isabel College every time he was there.
He paid his Ph. per month a
significant amount of money at the time
during the latter half of his first year
result felt that he did not put in
enough effort He was unable to maintain
his academic supremacy from the first
half and consistently earn second place
in all of his subjects the reason for this is
because his teacher's remark to him was not good
which demotivated him
but let's be clear
Rizal's grades are still high
I know it sounds devastating but
he did not fail he was only second in
fact at the end of his first
year he still got a grade of
sobresaliente or excellent in all
his subjects the only difference this
time he was not awarded a prize
when when Rizal finished
his first year at Ateneo
he returned to Kalemba for a vacation he did not
enjoy it much because
his mother was still in
prison that's why
he decided to visit her in Santa Cruz
He thought at first that all he would feel
from the visit would be great joy
because he would surprise his mother
but the opposite happened upon
their reunion the overwhelming Emotions
of their year long separation were too
much and they both found themselves
weeping in each other's embrace se
gising that
Rizal's second year at
Ateneo was not very interesting all we can say about
this part is that he was still disappointed with the
Rank he got last
year so this school year he worked hard
to fix it
that effort was successful because
he returned to his position as Emperor
of their Empire When the
school year ended
Rizal's grades were still very good in all subjects and
he even managed to win a gold
medal he said moving so fast when
he returned to Kalamba for vacation Rizal did not
hesitate anymore and
quickly visited his mother
he told Donya Teodora about
his Achievements at Ateneo and
funny anecdotes about his
professors and classmates while
the mother and son talked about the story of Donya
Tora he had a dream one
night his son gave it
a meaning Rizal said the
meaning of that dream was that he would be
free his mother after
only three months
Donya Teodora just smiled because Theodora felt that
her son was just making her happy and comforting her during this time
Rizal was already a teenager and like
other teenagers at that time
his interest turned to
reading romantic novels
his favorite book he read was
The Count of Montecristo a
story about Edmund Dantes
a man who was imprisoned even though he was innocent
who e scapes to seek revenge that's why
it's probably Rizal's favorite because
he relates to it. The book reminds him
of the wrong imprisonment of
his mother and the struggles
experienced by his Motherland.
Another book that inspired Rizal was the
book Travels and the Philippines by
Dr. Fodor Yor. This book is
not a romantic novel, it's
a historical book that ties into the
Spanish regime. He was impressed with
this book for two main reasons. First, the
author Bagor made very careful
observations about the problems caused
by Spanish colonization. Second, Bagor
predicted that one day Spain would no
longer control the Philippines and that
America would become the new [Music]
[Music]
colonizer. When Rizal returned to Ateneo,
his mother surprised him.
Donya t Dora told him that
her son's prediction that
he would be released from prison after just a few
months of studying was correct. Rizal is still struggling with
Spanish and thinks
he still can't give his
best. His grades are still high, all
excellent, but
he is sad because he only has one medal. What
he got this school year
was the medal he got for Latin. But
he thinks he should have gotten
the one for his Spanish subject too.
But in the results
defense, that's why
his classmate is fluent in Spanish because Spanish is one language.
language.
Nothing good happened here.
All we can say is that
Rizal was still disappointed with
himself. Rizal's favorite teacher
was Father Francisco de Paulo
Sanchez. Who is a Spanish priest
during Pepe's fourth year? Sister Neo.
Father Sanchez taught him the
subjects of rhetoric, Greek, and geometry.
Pepe became his Guru or the
priest called him "Pipito."
Last school year, but
strangely, Rizal did not mention this in
his student memoirs. One possible
reason is that Rizal was not happy
with the results that year and
his parents also said that he was
sent to school that year.
This means that he was already an intern.
Father Sanchez had a great
influence on Pepito's development
as a poet. He noticed that
Rizal is getting better at Spanish
and he joked that he wrote in
that language. This is one of the reasons
why almost everything Rizal wrote
was in Castilian. He knows
Tagalog. But he is less fluent in
this language when he writes Noli
Castilian Elfili Castilian also Makamisa.
Rizal's third novel,
he should have started in Tagalog but
he repeated it and wrote in
Spanish. Anyway, Rizal had a new
lease on life in studying with the
encouragement of father Francisco
Sanchez. Rizal was surprised by
these poems. The first poem was Spanish. El
Cano. El primero and la vuelta. Al mundo.
Dao in English and H is Spanish. El Cano
the first to circumnavigate the world in Tagalog. The first to circumnavigate the world in Tagalog.
Tagalog.
Elcano. This poem is
about Juan Sebastian Elcano, a
Spanish Navigator who completed the
first circumnavigation of the world
after Magellan died.
This piece is basically a tribute to the
Spanish sailor. The second poem is El
embarque. The hymn A la flota de magayanes in
English. The embarkation of him to
Magellan's fleet in Tagalog.
this poem pays tribute to
ferdinand magellan in Spain this
celebrates the conquest and colonization
of unknown lands by the Spanish soldiers
and reflects a eurocentric perspective
nationalism the third poem El combate
urbistondo terror de hulo in English the
battle urbistondo terror of hulo in Tagalog
Tagalog
the poem was written to
Hail a Warrior named urbistondo for the
successful battle against the Muslims in
the poem Rizal describes how combative
and strong the Spanish forces were with
100 ships he also describes the moros as
enemies the poem celebrates the bravery
and strength of the Spanish soldiers
comparing them to Heroes from other
famous battles in Europe It also
portrays the moros as godless and
tyrannical suggesting that the Spanish
Victory was a Triumph of Christian
Civilization over Islam isic barbarism
What the
[ __ ] I trusted you Rizal I trusted you Is
n't this anti Spain si rizal
I thought he'd come to his senses to the Spaniards
for the oppression done to his mother
and to the gumburza but why did
he write the poems we mentioned as
Praises to the Spanish there could be
different reasons first and you might have heard
this is that it is not because he is anti-span
in Rizal he is just angry with the
Spanish officials and their
abuses but it is not to betray
the country of Spain in case this
belief that Rizal does not want
Independence is still highly debated and
a bit time consuming so let's not go down
that route for now you can also discuss
the ethics of the three people that I said
you can also say that
Rizal was young when he tried to another
reason is Maybe
my interpretation of the three poems is wrong I
could be wrong because I am not
a poet and maybe there is an underlying
meaning that I just can't
see you could Pause the video to
Read the English versions of the three
poems and give it your own
meaning I think the most logical
reason why Rizal wrote this
is because he had assignments at
Ateneo where
Spanish history is taught there is Philippine
History but Philippine History
under Spain I also note that not
all of Rizal's Ateneo writings were
purely praise for them according to the book
Jose Rizal The Man and the hero by pas
sigi and cabalu many of Rizel's student
poems were impressionistic and
amateurish but they contain the Seeds of
his future nationalism He Could See a
sense of Philippine nationalism in
writing about flowers even his early
poem suggested a critical voice that
castigated the Spanish for their foibles
and folies Anyway at the end of
his fourth year at Ateneo
he got five medals for his
academic achievements two for the kak
one for rhetoric and poetry one for
drawing Rizal returned to Camba in
March 1876 and proudly
presented his
five medals and high grades to his parents
he was very happy because
he always paid for
his father's sacrifice somehow before
Rizal went on vacation
father Sanchez gave him a challenging
task He gave the boy a Spanish prose
version of an Italian versified drama
called saint of stach marti that result
should turn into a Spanish verse
he also took it to write a poem for
his town of kalamba so he
requested it to perfect Rizal
's poetic style and to occupy
him healthy during vacation so while on
vacation Pepito tried to
Rizal gave him the requests of
the priest On the first day of class
here father Sanchez realized that
rizal was good because of his
good writing and he knew how to
follow Rizal graduated with a
degree of Bachelor of Arts Ateneo according
to history Gregorio zide these are the
grades he got in school if
we look at the consistency of all
his subjects he got an
excellent grade I think one of the
most important things Rizal learned at
Ateneo was the importance of education
in a moving poem that
he wrote while studying at
school like him education was
a guiding lighthouse that sheds
light on the path of
a person's roots and actions R
firmly believed that Education was not
merely a personal endeavor but a
catalyst for societal progress he
envisioned the Generation of educated
youth who could lead their country into a
brighter future recognizing Education
as an essential component in Nation
building R's experience at Ateneo was
transformative living an indelible Mark
on his life and work beyond acquiring
scientific skills he honed this ability
to critically express himself in the
span language result results brilliance
as a student coupled with his athletic
prowess and gift for writing shape him
into a remarkable individual however his
true passion lay in advocating for
education and its transformative power
as a fiction writer nationalist and
medical doctor results accomplishments
were undeniably influenced by his solid
foundation at Ateneo the bread of his
achievements would have been
unattainable without the knowledge feels
years After Rizal studied with
us he enrolled in the
University of Santo Tomas a
Dominican School established since
1611 Rizal's studies at
UST were opposed by his mother which
surprised Rizal because Donya Tora
valued education
but now he doesn't like it anymore
Although it is understandable
why especially since what
happened in Gumburza is still fresh in people's minds,
in Rizal's student memo he
wrote I still remember and Will Never
Forget that when I was 16 my mother told
my father don't send him to Manila any
longer He knows enough if he gets to
know more they will cut off his head My
Father did not reply but my brother took
me to Manila despite My Mother's Tears
at UST Rizal took a course in
philosophy and letters it was because of
his father who wanted to study
metaphysics a subject that would give him
a solid Foundation in the liberal arts
which could prepare him for a career in
law at the same time he also took a
course in surveying at Ateneo after
a year Rizal shifted his course
at UST from philosophy and letters to
medicine and the reason for this was because of
his mother who during this time was
blind and believed that if
he took medicine he could
cure it he also wanted to
diffuse and minimize his growing
political interest he reasoned that
being a doctor was a tedious but
respectable profession that would
provide him with a good living When
Rizal was 1, he completed the
surveying course at Ateneo but because he was under
age, he was not immediately given
the Licensure as a surveyor.
This title was only issued to Rizal
after three and a half years. His performance
performance
results at USD were not that good when compared to
his performance at Ateneo.
He still got high
grades, but his grades at USD varied
from excellent to fair, not like
ours, where all were excellent. One possible
reason for this is that he was not happy
during his time at USD, according to historian
Gregorio Zaide. There are three
contributing factors to why
Rizal was not happy studying at the
University. First, the
Dominican professors at Rizal were hostile to him.
Second, the Filipino students at
that time experienced
discrimination. Third, the
method of instruction was obsolete and repressive.
In the same vein,
historian Leon Marie Guerrero
also identified three reasons
why Rizal struggled with academic
performance. at UST first he was not
satisfied with the education system of the
university secondly
rizal was young so there were plenty of things to
detract him from his studies and
thirdly medicine was not the course
he wanted it was not his passion and
we can see this in his grades
most of his medical subjects
had grades that you can compare
to his real vocation which is arts
while Jose Rizal may not have excelled
in his studies like in Ateneo He made a
name for himself in other activities He
was a prolific writer and poet and he
often uses work to express his
patriotism and his belief in the
Filipino people in a literary
contest that Rizal won the
first prize this was for his poem
allege of vent phip pina or in English
to the Philippine youth If
you are not familiar with the title of the poem here
is one of the most famous lines that
Rizal dropped the phrase the
youth is the hope of the country Although
he is just a bit confused in this poem
Rizal boldly declared that
the Philippines is the Motherland of the
Filipinos not Spain He was also
sincerely convinced that the Filipinos
despite their misfortunes handicaps and
vicissitudes were capable of greatness
in another literary contest conducted by the
same society Rizal won first priz
Again the competitors entered the
contest using assumed names the contest
was dedicated to the commemoration of
the anniversary of the death of Miguel
Desservantes Spain's greatest poet and
writer of Don Quijote the first priz was
awarded to a beautiful allegory called
the Council of the other Gods but
the Spanish judges did not know that the
author of the allegory was a Filipino
they changed their decision what
happened was a Spaniard
took the prize at USD also Rizal was active
as an activist
he often led the protests of
students against discrimination and
mistreatment of
Filipino students from their
Spanish and mestizo peers during this time
because racism was rampant in the University
the Spanish and mestizo
students were called Filipinos
Indo or Tongo Rizal took it back
by Calling them Castile or Bangus
because it is now common
student fights on campus and
on the streets of Manila
Rizal often won because he was good at
martial arts but there were also times
when he returned home with wounds like on one
occasion where he was wounded in a fight
with Spanish students in Escolta Manila
to protect everyone from
discrimination and mistreatment Rizal
formed a secret group or
hand called companerismo where
only Filipino students were members of
which he was the president and
his secretary was his cousin
Galano AP possible results activism
was also Expressed in his criticism of
the faulty and outmoded system of
Education at UST he condemned the
humiliation of Filipino students were
often insulted by their Dominican
mentors he also criticized the archaic
method of instruction for example he
ridiculed the teaching of which was Tau
without any laboratory experiments
students were not allowed to touch the
laboratory equipment which was kept in
dis play cabinets Ral also believed that
grades were often given based on
favoritism and skin color rather than on academic
[Applause]
everything you have heard up to this
point is merit a from various textbooks
biographies and articles that show
Rizal's experience at the University and
it is quite clear that
our perception of the school
at that time will be negative especially when
we compare him to Ateneo so just to not
be biased let's listen to what
people at UST say and you are the only ones who will
judge what
you will believe in a Facebook post made by
the nostalgic tashan it explained that
we have many misunderstandings about
Rizal's experience at USTE and the
Facebook post highlighted three specific
areas where this misconceptions exist
first did rizal experience
discrimination no rizal said
because he was given a highly unusual
privilege where he was allowed to
take premed and Med proper
he was also supported by the Spanish
fryers at that time second were
Filipinos discriminated no
because if they were discriminated
why would the grades
they got from the original batch of 24 students
in the first year be high when rizal came to the
fourth year a 17 here and
they are only seven and most of those who
lost were Spaniards the
four top seven
students who remained were Filipinos
while the bottom three were all
Spaniards the third did
Rizal get a low grade in UST they
said it shouldn't be because we don't
compare high school to college
Rizal in class the one who got the
first rank was Cornello mapa who is
also a Filipino According to the USD Archives
Regalado Trota Jose most
of Rizal's biographers are too
bleak or negative in describing the
hero's struggle in school
anyway the book by Father Fidel Villa
Ruel the one used R as a reference in the
protest the real events
apart from what we mentioned earlier
according to the book Well the grades
that result result got in USD are
almost the same as the grades he got while
studying in Madrid these grades
are also not excellent but
above average it is also important to
know that he did not complain about the
grades he got in UST
while he complained in
He received it in Madrid According to
Lito Zulueta, a USD faculty member in
his essay Rizal at The University
of Santo Tomas the Miss understood year
included in the book Rizel plus Jose
Rizel studied at The University of Santo
Thomas between 187 and 1881 but no
period in his rather short life is as
misunderstood as the five years he spend
as a toman misunderstood is a kind word
historians and biographers it appears have been
keen to portray his ears there
as the darkest of his life even darker
than his exile in the p1 and his
imprisonment in Fort Bonifacio and
martyrdom in Bagong Bayan to them Rizal
story was something akin to dentist
Inferno minus the allegory it is also not
true that Rizal is angry with the Dominicans
because he has friends of this
nationality it is also wrong to
believe that Rizal left
UST because of the treatment he received according
to Zulueta he left Because He was a
young man in search of himself samos sa
ring comments appear whenever
Rizal's studies
at UST are discussed some say bias some
agree some criticize
Rizal's biographers some say What is the connection
and there is also something '
So what do you think is exaggerated is the
story of people talking about
Rizal's experience in this speech or It is true that
there is really resentment towards Rizal and
he really experienced
discrimination again You are the only one to
judge also if you are interested in
knowing what the answer to this question is a
Why What is wrong SAO why are you like that
What kind of experience did you have to
be curious about such things and B
seven years the answer is seven years seven
seven
