we're starting a new series this
morning some of you have asked me about
the role of the holy spirit in our lives
in our Bible study and in everything
that we do what what role does he play
and so we're going to do a series about
how the Holy Ghost works and that's the
title of the series this morning is the
introduction and then we'll deal more in
the future about being filled with the
spirit but how the spirit speaks how he
moves the leading of the spirit walking
in the spirit the fruit of the spirit
we'll try to cover in detail this
doctrine of the Holy Spirit uh is a very
important issue uh especially for those
of us who are under the dispensation of
Grace I mentioned this morning that
there's a a major difference between the
way we live our lives now under grace
versus the way they live their lives
under the law and quite frankly it was a
lot easier to understand under the law
because God just lists out the things
that you do and you you just have to do
them uh under grace you're not under the
law uh you're supposed to walk in the
spirit but what does that mean and so
it's a very important thing for your
life and um that is one of the major
reasons why this is an important issue
not the least of which is that there's
major confusion in Christianity about
the Holy Ghost and so we need to get
that right okay Romans 14:17 says the
kingdom of God is Not meat and drink but
righteousness and peace and joy in the
Holy Ghost and I ask is that your
experience that the kingdom of God your
life as a Christian is peace and
righteousness and joy and the Holy Ghost
and you know we may all say yes of
course it is but what does that really
mean uh do you feel the Holy Ghost do
you know if you have the Holy Ghost what
makes you different than someone else
that doesn't have the Holy Ghost how do
you know um what does this first mean do
you experience the peace and joy of the
holy ghost or don't you uh the the
consequences are great to understanding
this Doctrine or not so we need to cover
it uh people generally don't believe in
ghosts okay we talking about a holy
ghost what's that make us strange I
don't know the Bible talks about the
Holy Ghost it talks about the kingdom of
God being in the Holy Ghost people don't
believe in ghosts okay if you went to
work tomorrow and said we talked about
ghosts yesterday at church they think
you nuts okay most people don't talk
about the spiritual World in that regard
they're more materialistic Jesus they
can grasp I mean he was a man right well
he was also God that's a little harder
to grasp but he wasn't just a man but
they they can identify the person there
what about the Holy Ghost who is this
what is he what does he do okay so the
Bible talks a lot about him um
Paul one of the confusions about the
Holy Ghost is what on Earth do we call
him uh because there's different names
given to him there's the spirit there's
Father Son and the Holy Ghost or is it
father son and spirit is it the holy
spirit is it the Holy Ghost can we just
call him ghost I mean what what is his
name Jesus called him the comforter okay
in the Bible you also see names given to
him like the spirit of Truth or the
spirit of Grace in Hebrews chapter 10 so
what do you call him is it the same
thing is it the same person is it even a
person at all maybe it's just like an
impersonal Force like a superpower God
gives you so there's Jesus and there's
like his holy power ghost you know and
this is like some jump start that you
get believe it or not a lot of
Christians have that sort of concept of
the holy spirit that he's like juice for
the Christian he's like your energy um
but it's not that he is God okay what
makes it worse of course is that um our
songs don't help uh we we sang a song
this morning and our Grace Himel tries
to focus on uh correcting the words in
songs so that it teach they teach right
Doctrine instead of promoting error um
but a lot of songs that people sing in
churches uh really teach wrong Doctrine
about the Holy Spirit anybody heard the
song it talks about surely the presence
of the Lord is in this place what are
they talking about in that verse the
Holy Spirit raining down and feeling the
holy spirit's presence here and is the
holy spirit here this morning and our
church is about the holy spirit's
presence and can you feel the spirit
this morning can I get an amen
no let's pray the Holy Spirit come down
ever heard that language let's pray he
come down to our meeting you know Lord
please come down and inhabit this house
so that we can uh experience and feel
your presence here right this is what
Christians talk about is it right or
wrong okay how do you know you have the
spirit a lot of Christians because of
the songs they sing because of the
doctrines that wrongly taught question
whether or not the holy spirit is with
them and that's a very very sad thing
Romans 88:9 says if you don't have the
Holy Spirit you're not christs wow
that's strict so next week we'll talk
about how to receive the holy spirit
because you need him or else you're not
a Christian and that sounds very strict
but it's true according what the Bible
says and so what about I feel the spirit
or the popular himym that a lot of
Catholic like to sing is Come Holy
Spirit you heard that song Come Holy
Spirit why do they sing that don't they
know 1 Corinthians 3:16 I often in my
head have these little comic strips of
Paul you know in my mind and and I think
you know when people pray Come Holy
Spirit Paul would be there and he would
say know ye not that your your body is
the Temple of the holy spirit that he
dwells in you apparently they don't if
they sing Come Holy Spirit because why
would he come if he was here right he's
already there let people don't feel him
they think that going to church is a
place where the Holy Spirit likes to
hang out cuz it's more holy here the
carpet's cleaner you know it smells
better sometimes you know they think
this is where God dwells okay but that
that's not the proper doct we already
know that the building is is nothing you
are the body of Christ right and the
Bible teaches that the spirit dwells in
you if you trust the gospel of Christ
we'll deal more with that next week the
confusion is
widespread when people talk about how
the Holy Spirit works in the world they
of often blame him for things I say that
my tongue in my cheek what they what I
mean is that they give him credit for
things that they simply just don't know
if he's doing it or not you ever heard
this people talk like this the spirit
led me to do this the spirit told me to
do that right or the spirit is moving me
to do this or that or say this or that
or how do they know that how do they
know you ever had that feeling I've had
that feeling okay I'm not always the
most emotional person and maybe that's
part of the problem is that people
confuse the spirit with their emotions
and so so the emotional people they say
the spirit's moving me I've got it looks
like that was just a funny joke or it
looks like that was just a an emotional
sermon to me how do you know that's the
Holy Spirit here's the questions I've
had but everyone blames the holy spirit
for their feelings their emotions gut
reactions what does God want me to do
I'll pray about it I'll think about it
not very long I'll pray about it again I
I'll whatever I feel this is what God is
leading me to do whatever I feel is
right and that is the determination
which a lot of people make decisions in
Christianity what they feel is is right
cuz God wants the best for them right
and so why would he let me do something
that is not right for me if I feel it is
right to do but what if your feelings
really don't come into the equation at
all what if your feelings can be
deceived or can be wrong or what if what
you feel really isn't the best way to
make choices you what there's a better
way to do that but what is the
difference between your feelings and the
Holy Spirit according to Modern
Christianity there's not much difference
at all the holy spirit is that the holy
spirit is your feelings your emotions
your got reactions or
superstitions right they look at
circumstances and say that was God that
was the spirit working right in the
circumstances around them kind of like
reading the Tea Leaves of ancient Pagan
religions you know and they'll be like
well you see what that happened there
that happened because God did that you
know and I can feel it I can feel that
he did that he really wanted me to do
that or he really wanted that to happen
to me you know and so how do we know you
can see where this issue of the Holy
Ghost really overlaps and interacts with
other things like how does God intervene
in the world and his involvement with
our lives and and this sort of business
especially since the holy spirit is
supposed to be dwelling in us now it's
what Jesus sent down to earth when he
went to heaven so that's God on Earth
his holy spirit right now so what's he
doing what is God doing in the world and
why does he allow bad things to happen
or the question I've been pondering
lately is why does he allow good things
to happen you ever thought about that I
don't want to get sidetracked no one
asked that question why good things
happen they take that for granted they
always ask why do bad things happen
praise God for the good folks but anyway
then there's the Pentecostals I haven't
even dealt with the Pentecostals yet but
the Pentecostal charismatic movement uh
they emphasize the holy spirit because
they feel like that the holy spirit's in
a corner crying that he doesn't get much
attention they say the Holy Spirit needs
more attention and so they really make a
big deal about the Holy Spirit and teach
a lot about him and about his his
interaction in your life uh because
again they see that as the power of God
on Earth and so you have the tongue
talking talking in Tong tongues in the
spirit praying in the spirit singing in
the spirit preaching in the spirit and
the you see these a lot in Pentecostal
charismatic groups and they see this as
a source of of of of understanding a
source of closeness to God that they're
speaking in tongues in the spirit that
they're praying in the spirit singing in
the spirit preaching in the spirit and I
don't have an outline this morning I'm
going to sit stand up here and just as
the spirit leads me I'm going to say
something to you and this is supposed to
be more spiritual right than not reading
my outline which I'll have to do now you
see is the holy spirit leading me or not
I've got an outline I'm prepared people
talk about the Holy Spirit teaching
through me right or people in general is
what I mean the preachers talk about
this but is it right to say that the
Holy Spirit teaches you or that teachers
are called of the Holy Spirit and
anointed of the Holy Spirit and have an
unction of the Holy Spirit to teach what
they were teaching right there's right
Doctrine there's wrong Doctrine
preachers study and prepare it's been
hours studying God's word preparing
outlines learning making mistakes
improving correcting and and then they
teach a lesson and people go that was
anointed and you go it may have been
right but I spent a lot of time on that
what kind of gift is me working that's
not a gift at all you're gifted to teach
actually I spent a lot of time preparing
to teach and I spent a lot of years
teaching I wasn't so good at the
beginning you know what kind of gift is
that if you're working for it you know
God has gifted you with such a great
voice that's why you're on the voice
right well why is it that they got
kicked off the first season you know and
then they they went back to voice school
then they they sang a lot more then they
came back the second time then barely
made it if they were gifted it seems
like God's more powerful than that isn't
he why is it they practice so hard if
they're gifted I'm not trying to be mean
I'm just trying to raise the question of
uh miscommunication or what God's doing
in the church and it all surrounds this
Holy Ghost idea what's the spirit doing
what is he gifting you with what what is
he saying where do you see his fruit
where do you see his presence how do you
know how do you walk in the spirit okay
as we definitely should not neglect the
Holy Ghost I totally agree with this we
should give him his due and what he's
doing and we should praise God Holy
Ghost being the third person of the
godhead okay so how do we get him how do
we receive the Holy Spirit what does he
do these are questions we're going to
answer in the next few weeks okay how do
we know he's leading us and what is his
leading how do we use his power what
kind of power does he give how are we
filled with his presence Paul says be
filled with the Holy Spirit how do we do
that okay how do we produce his fruit
people often study and talk about the
fruit of the spirit how do we do that
right it's not a law is it and how do we
feel his presence if we can't feel his
presence at all how do we know he's here
all right we're going to be dealing with
that the next few weeks but just at the
outset I wanted to introduce to you the
confusion that exists in the church
about the Holy Spirit hopefully you you
you recognize this um if you if you have
trouble with the Holy Spirit you're not
alone okay this is a doctrine that that
is important for you to understand most
people don't understand and that the
right division can help you understand
and it sounds like I'm just beating the
same horse then I say that every time
it's because I believe it to be true you
but studying the Bible rightly divided
really does open up the scripture to
your understanding especially with what
God's doing and we talk about the Holy
Spirit and what he's doing uh it's going
to help us understand so the spirit
plays a crucial role life of a Christian
in the way we live our lives
and we have a serious problem in
Christianity because nobody knows what
he's doing who he is how they have him
they say wrong things about him we need
to address it okay so we'll start
talking about this morning and we'll
pick it up again next week but I want to
talk briefly here about what the holy
ghost is now we just got done talking
the last month and a half uh in January
specifically about describing God so if
you're listening to that series you you
learned how the threein one Doctrine was
taught how God is one in the Bible
there's only one God and yet there are
three called God in the scripture
there's the father there's Jesus the son
of God and there's the Holy Ghost
they're all three called God and so we
need to understand that first that the
Holy Ghost is not some sort of Star Wars
came out recently he's not the force
okay pastors use movies like that as
illustrations of the Holy Spirit and
it's wrong in that way I don't know what
the force is it's something they made up
George Lucas made it up but the holy
spirit is God a person not an impersonal
Force he's not a you can't control the
holy spirit with a with a a switch you
can't sit back with remote control and
just tell the Holy Spirit what to do
okay God is not your vending machine
right you don't put some spiritual coin
in and the Holy Spirit spits something
out that's not how it works okay many
people think that's the case they think
the way that they speak the way that
they act a specific incantation or words
in a prayer this will force God to do
something it'll just spit it out right
you give us the blessings and what do we
got to do we got to come forward you got
to give the tithe you got to say some
words you got to say in Jesus name you
got to say in the father Son and the
Holy Spirit you got to say something
magical and God does it you got to be
good you got to confess all your sins
you got to keep the Commandments right
what else do I got to do for the Holy
Spirit to actually work in my life well
Paul teaches us how how that operates
okay but he's not a Divine lever of
blessing he's not a magic wand where you
pull him out and say well we need a
healing things going bad in your life
turn that FR up down let's pull the
lever of the Holy Spirit and boom you're
healed right that's not the Holy
Spirit that's exactly how he's taught
right you need something you're feeling
bad Holy Spirit help you right that's
how do you where do you get this idea I
understand that we all have bad days we
all have bad things happen there's evil
in the world but what is God doing okay
and why is it if Pentecostalism is the
fastest growing movement or the largest
movement in Christianity they claim four
500 uh million people okay in their in
their Circles of course they include in
their circles people AC cross
denominations we Roman Catholics or
Mormons or whomever will speak in
tongues and will recognize spiritual
gifts they put them in the same crowd so
there's not really any sort of doctrinal
unity there but but they say the four or
500 million people now are charismatic
or Pentecostals and if that's true that
there's so many of them then why is it
they don't agree and they can't all
figure out why God doesn't help the rest
of us why is it I missed 4 and people
get offended at this why is it there are
Hindus and other religions that also
speak in tongues you say no yeah Hindus
speak in tongues not all of them there's
groups of Hindus groups Ian tongues
gelia as the religionist the the
scholars of religion call it is not
unique to
Christians okay you say really God gave
them the power of the Holy Spirit no no
no I'm telling you it may not I'm
telling you it can be fake that's all
I'm saying okay well I don't want to get
into that conversation I'm not here
talking about the the reality or the
falsity of people's U stories or their
or their anecdotes about God's working
God can heal God has work the Holy
Spirit has power we need to find out
what he's doing how he works okay so
he's not a magic wand he's not
witchcraft you know a lot of the anybody
remember the New Age movement when that
was a big deal it's not so much anymore
but it used to be like that was the deal
the New Age movement where did it go
did they all just give up on their
spirituality or could it be perhaps that
they Incorporated themselves into
Christian organizations and Ministries
and that's why we see a rise of people
who don't believe specific doctrines of
Christianity but they are
spiritual I think that's what's happened
in history the last 100 years or so that
new age mov there's always been a group
of people influenced by Eastern
religions who are incorporating this now
of Christianity you ever heard of prayer
circles that's from Eastern religion
okay you ever heard of a spirit writing
you just put your hand on the page and
start writing whatever the spirit leads
that's from Eastern religions not from
Christianity okay and so witchcraft we
don't use a word like that anymore in
modern society you know but this idea of
Consulting spiritual things and letting
Spirits work through you and everyone
thinks oh this can only be God the Holy
Ghost maybe not right maybe you got to
be careful of that and the only way you
can discern one Spirit from another is
if you know what God the Holy Spirit
doing is you know how the Bible
describes it okay so we'll do with that
again the weeks to come the Bible
describes the Holy Spirit as God in exra
three we see one passage here that shows
us the holy spirit is God when Peter
says to ananas that he lied to him Peter
said ananas why hath Satan filled thine
heart to lie to the Holy Ghost
interesting here that what filled anas's
heart was not God but Satan
Christians love to say well God has put
it on my heart how do you know because
here Satan put something in anas's heart
what if an said no Peter don't
understand God put it in my heart the
God of this world maybe you see you have
to be able to discern the difference but
here Satan filled thine heart to lie to
the Holy Ghost the Holy Ghost is not imp
impersonal force it doesn't receive
things or listen things or doesn't get
offended or doesn't have a will the Holy
Ghost can be lied to okay you can't lie
to a wall right you can't lie to the
wind you can lie to a person you lie to
the Holy Ghost but not only that in
verse four it says while it remained was
it not in thine own after it was sold
was it not in thine power it says why
hast thou conceived this thing in thine
heart thou Hast not lied unto men but
unto God so you see verse three says he
Li to the Holy Ghost verse four says he
Li into God the Holy Ghost is God that's
how we know that from the scripture okay
the Holy Ghost is not an impersonal
Force it's God he's God 2 Corinthians
3:17 says the Lord is that Spirit the Holy
Holy
Spirit where the spirit of the Lord is
there is Liberty the spirit is God
second Corinthians 3:17 says look at John
John
15:26 and this is going to be a review
of our lesson in January about the three
in one understanding the doctrine of the
Triune God that we serve we serve one
God folks one God eternally existing in
three persons father son and spirit
those three persons are all equally God
and distinct from each other see that
makes that doesn't make any sense well
that's what the Bible teaches we covered
that back in January you can see the
verses for that we know in the Bible all
over the place it talks about one God we
just saw the Holy Spirit was called God
look at John
15:26 Jesus says here when the comforter
is come that comforter is the Holy Ghost
right whom I will send unto you from the
father even the spirit of Truth which
proceeds from the father he shall
testify of me so this tells us something
about the Holy Spirit and what he's
going to do here that Jesus sent him to
do but notice just talking about what he
is we see here the Holy Ghost is a
person that is distinct from
Jesus Jesus says I will send unto you
this comforter right he says he the
spirit shall testify of me now you can't
say he and me unless there's two
different right they're both God but
they're distinct one God three distinct
Eternal persons they each have all the
attributes of God but they're separate
from one another in their identity okay
father son and spirit what they've
reveal themselves to us so this is who
the Holy Ghost is he's part of the
Triune God and so this should be very um
it should really give you a sense of Joy
just knowing that God dwells in you as
Paul says holy spirit's in you this is
not some sort of Magical Force or power
ability this is God dwelling in you
right and we know that from the
scripture in 1ans 3:16 all right the
1:8 a lot of us and there's fewer of us
nowadays a lot of us non Pentecostals
non- charismatics are blamed for being
cold dry
unemotional and lacking the power of the
spirit in our churches okay
um I I believe in tongues I believe in
the power of the Holy Ghost I believe
believe in the healings of Jesus Christ
I believe Christ revealed a mystery to
Paul and explained how he changed his
operation in the world Acts 1:8 tells us
the Holy Ghost has power it says ye
shall receive power after the Holy Ghost
come upon you yeah they received power
they spoke in tongues in Act 2 there's
no denying it okay they had power to
heal the shadow of Peter healed
everyone which is it just using my brain
this is how I see something different
happening in Acts than what I see at
Pentecostal Faith healing meetings
because Peter's Shadow healed people but
the image of b h on a big screen can't
heal anybody and people are looking at
from the crowd and they have to go up on
stage to get touched by him well Peter's
Shadow healed him so there's a
difference it seems like between the
power in Acts chapter 3 and 4 and what's
going on now but again that's not the
topic this morning look at Acts chapter
8: 19 the Holy Spirit has power if God
dwells in you the holy spirit's in you
and the the spirit has power this should
also be comforting because that means
God who lives in you is not powerless
powerless
right Acts 8:
19 saying give me also this power now
here's Simon speaking to Peter Peter had
to come to uh Samaria here and he laid
hands on the people who believe so that
they would receive the spirit we'll talk
more about that next week and Simon one
of the Believers there said to Peter
give me also this power that on
whomsoever I lay hands he may receive
the Holy Ghost he was he wanted this
power not because when Peter came he
just said receive the Holy Ghost and
they go that's it am I good I me he laid
hands on them and they started speaking
in tongues they had the power of the
Holy Ghost and Simon goes that's
neat and he wanted to have that same
ability to bestow the Holy Spirit power
on people okay my point here is simply
that the Holy Ghost has power right he
was sent with power look at Romans 15:19
you say well yeah that's all before Paul
granted all before Paul I'm a Pauline
dispensational now I'm going to Paul to
show you the Holy Spirit has
15 R 15:
says through Mighty signs and wonders by
the power of the spirit of God so that
from Jerusalem and roundabout Lum I have
fully preached the gospel of Christ with
the power of the Holy Ghost you see that
the holy spirit of
God in 1 Corinthians chapter 2 2:4 Turn
the Page Paul says I was with you in
weakness and in fear and much trembling
and my speech my preaching was not with
enticing words of man's Wisdom but in
demonstration of the spirit and of
power Paul claims power he exhibited
power Paul healed people with
handkerchiefs and you get those in the
mail Paul heals people he has the power
of the Holy Ghost and there's power that
Paul speaks about the Holy Spirit
operates on you well what is that power
how is it different than Pentecost is it
different than Pentecost how do we know
what is the spirit doing if I don't
exhibit tongues is the holy spirit not
in me is he not working did I forget
something did I didn't pray right these
are the questions people have right so
we're going to deal with how the Holy
Ghost works but the Holy Spirit does
have power we've seen it we see it in
the scripture recorded and we know the
spirit of God dwells in you I've already
quoted to 1 Corinthians chap 3:1 16
where Paul says know you not that you
are the temple of God that the spirit of
God dwells in
you you're the temple of God you have
the spirit of God dwelling in you if so
be that you're Christ's because Romans
88:9 says you if you're one of his then
you have the spirit Romans 88:9 you are
not in the flesh but in the spirit if so
be it the spirit of God dwell in you now
if any man have not the spirit of Christ
he is none of his some people read that
and they teach that you're not a true
Christian unless you exhibit the powers
of the Holy Spirit maybe not in your
circles but in some circles they do
maybe you're not complete in Christ
maybe you're not part of the church
maybe you haven't received all God has
for you unless you exhibit the the signs
of the Holy Ghost right so how do you
know what is your comfort what is your
Assurance is the holy spirit speaking to
you how do you know are you making it up
I mean you want to fit in or what what's
happening what is the holy spirit
doing well God's Not Your babysitter the
holy spirit's not your scapegoat he's
not your excuse he's not your puppet
master what is he what's going on how do
we feel him you say why is this even
important I mean can't we just trust
Christ I me isn't Christ all there is I
mean can't we just believe the gospel of
Christ and of course Christ is the
preeminent in all things he is the head
of the body he's the Savior he's the
Lord of all he's exalted above
everything but this is an important
topic okay this is an important topic
because I'm going to channel Stevie
Wonder here you're saved sealed and
delivered by the Holy Spirit you get an
amen no Holy Spirit moving this morning
I was anointed to say that I got the
unction wrote it down my
outline Ephesians 1:13 it's true though
you are saved you're sealed and you're
delivered this this is by the way not a
new thing it's a bad preacher joke is
what that is Ephesians
1:13 says
that after you heard the word of Truth
The Gospel of your salvation in whom
also after you believed you were sealed
with that Holy Spirit of Promise
Ephesians 13 tells you the order of
events that happen in your salvation
okay it says that you heard the word of
Truth The Gospel of your salvation so
faith comes by hearing your salvation
you have to hear something to be saved
you can't just look at someone's life
you got to hear the gospel and then it
says you trust in whom you also trusted
after you believed right so you hear you
trust you believe you're sealed with the
Holy Spirit of promise now Romans 88:9
says you have the spirit you're of
Christ so we'll study more about this
next week and how you receive the Holy
Spirit but it says You Hear The Gospel
you believe it you receive the spirit
right you're sealed with the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:1
says um that there there's no
condemnation to those who are in Christ
Jesus who walk not after the
flesh not after the flesh but after the
spirit right you don't know maybe you do
know the number of people who correct
this verse in your Bible correct I put
in quotes because I don't think it needs
to be corrected at all I believe every
word of your Bible but they'll say
that's a mistake it shouldn't say who
walked not after the flesh after the
spirit it should just say there's no
condemnation to them which you're in
Christ right that's not what the verse
says the verse says there's no
condemnation to those who walk after the
flesh but after the spirit because I
know a lot of people who are saved who
face self-
condemnation so what's that say to them
if it says there's no condemnation to
them they in Christ maybe I'm not a
Christian the verse says to them who
walk not after the flesh out the spirit
but you see how important this Doctrine
is about the Holy Ghost and how he works
because if you're facing condemnation
you need to learn how to walk after the
spirit and not after the flesh it's
important that we talk about what he's
doing and what you're supposed to to
respond to him with Romans 8:9 we've
read twice now already he says you're if
you have not the spirit of Christ you're
none of his well that's significant
folks apparently you're not saved unless
you have the spirit of
God you unless you have the Holy Ghost
you are not saved so this is a
significant teaching in
Christianity right this is one thing
that separates you from the rest of the
religionist out there you've got to have
the spirit of God Christ died for your
sins will you believe the gospel of your
salvation he died and rose again for
your sins you are seal with the spirit
if you don't have that Spirit you're not
a Christian how do I
know right how do we know what is he
doing Romans
8:26 there's a lot of verses in Romans 8
talk about the
spirit Romans 8:26 says the spirit also
helps our infirmities anybody want that
we know not what we should pray for as
we ought are your prayers getting
answered every time but the spirit
itself makes intercession for us with
groanings which cannot be uttered the
spirit intercedes for you that seems
kind of important don't you think prayer
seems kind of important don't you think
your infirmity seems like think of a lot
of your life don't they right it's
important to understand who the spirit
is what's he doing what's his role in
our life all right he teaches you look
at 1 Corinthians chapter
2 some people think as Grace Believers
we reject everything there is to know
about the spirit and say well you know
God doesn't talk to you he doesn't teach
you he doesn't intervene at all just
read your Bible you well practically
that's very helpful to read your Bible
it really is but there's a reality here
you know we don't worship words on a
page we worship the word
right the holy spirit is God okay
dwelling in you so these aren't just
again just words this isn't just a
philosophy this is the truth and reality
describing what's going on in you Ro 1
Corinthians 2 and verse 10 says God hath
revealed them unto us by his spirit and
he's talking here about the mystery in
verse 7 the hidden wisdom of God the
mystery God hath revealed them unto us
by his spirit for the spirit searches
all things y the Deep things of God
anybody want access to the Deep things
of God
seems kind of important we know what the
spirit's doing how do we use him or does
that sound dirty of me to say using
God yeah yeah that seems kind of bad but
that's what Christians try to do right
but here it says the Holy Spirit knows
the Deep things of God searches the Deep
things of God and it says in verse 11
what man knows the things of a man save
the spirit of a
man uh even so the things of God knows
no man but the spirit of God we have
received not the spirit of the world but
the spirit which is of god that we might
know the things that are freely given to
us apparently you can't know unless you
have the spirit which things also we
speak not in Words which man's Wisdom
teaches but which the Holy Ghost teaches
apparently the Holy Ghost teaches
you the natural man receives not the
things of the spirit of God because he
doesn't have the spirit of God you see
how important in this chapter the holy
spirit is for your
understanding okay and you say yeah why
is that are you turning Pentecostal with
me no I'm not turning Pentecostal okay
I'm telling you the Holy Spirit has
probably been operating in your life
already you just been so confused
perhaps you don't understand it okay God
works through well I'm getting ahead of
myself but God works in your life
through his word his Spirit his church
okay and we've seen changes you've seen
changes in your life because of that
right maybe you just haven't
acknowledged it maybe you haven't
understood it maybe there's things you
still need to learn that's great that's
why we meet together okay
but the holy spirit is an important part
of your life as a Christian look at Galatians
Galatians
spirit remember this is just
introduction so hopefully I'm raising
questions and and you you say well give
me the answer well this is coming weeks
to come okay this introduction Galatians
5:116 this I say then walk in the spirit
and you shall not fulfill the lust of
the flesh anybody struggle with their
flesh wow wish that verse could
work that's howad did I say that isn't
God word shouldn't God's word work but
he says this I say walk in the spirit
you shall not fulfill the lust of the
flesh well we should know how that that
works Galatians 5:18 if you be led of
the spirit you are not under the
law every time I read that I kind of
tilt my head because I I've got this
bias in my culture about what the holy
spirit means and what leading of the
holy spirit is used as by Christians and
the way they use it so much that when I
read this verse if you be led of the
spirit you're not under the law I think
how do those two things even they're
unrelated to each other if you're LED
with the spirit what shouldn't it say
something like if you're LED with the
spirit you'll do something that God
wants you to do but it says if you're of
the spirit and not of the law wait a
minute that doesn't make sense to me in
my cultural Christianity that I should
discard Galatians
5:25 if we live in the spirit let us
also walk in the spirit well I don't
even know if I have the spirit you know
I can't feel him Cal down Holy Spirit
you know back to square one we in the
spirit we should walk in the spirit it's
important that we know how to do that
Ephesians 5:116 Paul
says Redeeming the time because the days
are evil therefore be not unwise but
understand what the will of the Lord is
if Christians do not know the will of
the Lord they are
unwise and I say that with a heart not
wanting them to stay that way I want
them to know God's will but Ephesians
5:17 says if you don't know God's will
you're unwise that's because God's will
is known
you can know it it has been revealed
it's not unknowable but Verse 18 says be
not drunk with wine where is excess but
be filled with the spirit another one of
those strange type of comparisons so the
holy spirit's like
drinking charismatics take that verse
and that's what they do they say well
the holy spirit's like drinking so I'm
going to act
drunk and have you seen the drunken in
the Holy Spirit they get it from this
verse folks be not drunk with wine I
didn't drink any wine but I'm drunk
anyway Bo right I didn't drink anything
well say be fed with the spirit instead
of of drink well we'll study what that
means but Paul says be filled with the
spirit if you're not being filled with
the spirit if you are not endeavoring to
be filled with the spirit you're
disobeying God I sound charismatic this
morning don't I talk a lot about the
Holy Ghost but it's what Paul says be
filled with the spirit well how do I do
that how do I fill myselfself with the
spirit I mean after all Pentecost they
thought they were drunk right maybe
there's something to drinking in spirit
well we'll get to that and talk about
being filled with the spirit and of
course Romans 14:17 the verse we read at
the beginning of the outline the
beginning of the lesson is that the
kingdom of God is Not meat and drink but
righteousness and peace and joy anybody
want righteousness peace and joy anybody
want to be living in God's kingdom it
says it's in the Holy Ghost apparently
that's crucial for your life of peace
and joy and righteousness
okay look at Philippians chapter 3 the
holy go ghost is crucial
maybe we don't talk about him enough
maybe some people talk about him too
much maybe a lot of people got him wrong
I think that's the truth and I think
it'll help us to rightly divide the
scriptures to know what God's doing
especially we're talking about God the
Holy Spirit some people object and say
we shouldn't talk about the Holy Ghost
at all okay it just encourages them
encourages the Pentecostals and charism
encourages those who who would replace
the Bible with their feelings and their their
their
experiences okay well they say I thought
it was all about Jesus Christ
Philippians 3:7 Paul says what things
were gained to me those I counted loss
for Christ ye doubtless I count all
things but loss for the Excellency of
the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord
Paul doesn't say I kind of all but lost
for the knowledge of the Holy
Ghost true he doesn't say for the
knowledge of Jesus Christ Christ Jesus
my Lord okay Christ is all in all as
Paul says Christ is the head he is the
preeminent he is the savior and the Lord
above all things every tongue will
confess the name of Jesus Christ maybe
this is why the Holy Ghost remains
nameless H is that the name of Jesus
Christ is what matters Christ is all in
all Philippians 3:7-8 tells us that your
life is Christ Philippians 1:20 all
right but remember the spirit testifies
of Christ the spirit is the operation of
what Christ is doing on the earth in
John 15: 26 I'm going back here before Paul
Paul
to tell you what Jesus Christ said to
his disciples about sending the spirit
now he's not here talking about the
mystery but he's simply describing the
spirit's role the spirit's function in
this operation of God in John 15: 26
when I the comforter has come whom I
will send unto you from the father even
the spirit of Truth which proceeds from
the father what's it say that he will do
the comforter will testify of
me the Holy Ghost does not not speak
about himself the Holy Ghost speaks
about Christ the only reason I have a
series about the how the Holy Ghost
works is that people have rejected what
the Holy Ghost has testified about
Christ okay and they think it's all
about the Holy Ghost it's not Jesus says
he'll testify of me this also to help
you that rightly Divine look at John
1613 John 1613
says when he the spirit of Truth is come
he will guide you into all Truth for he
shall not speak of himself I'm anointed
with the Holy Ghost I got a message for
you this morning about the Holy
Ghost I question this John 16:13 says he
will not speak of himself but whatsoever
he shall hear that shall he speak and he
will show you things to come whatsoever
he shall hear that he'll speak so the
Holy Spirit was going to be sent down
and was going to fill these people at
Pentecost Paul says we have the Holy
Spirit as well and what's the Holy
Spirit supposed to be doing speaking and
testifying of Christ now when Peter
testified of Christ how did he testify
Christ according to prophecy how does
Paul testify Christ how did how was
Christ revealed to him according to
mystery you see so the Holy Spirit today
is testifying Christ according to the
revelation of the mystery look at
Ephesians chapter
3 the chief chapter where Paul talks
about the mystery in the mystery of
Christ he says I Paul the prisoner of
Jesus Christ for you Gentiles if you
have heard of the dispensation of the
grace of God which is given me to you
word how that by Revelation he made
known unto me the
mystery whereby verse four when you read
you may understand my knowledge in the
mystery of Christ verse 5 says in other
Ages was not made known ages is a Time
word it was not made known of the sons
of men as it is now revealed unto His
Holy Apostles and Prophets by who the spirit
spirit
the spirit revealed the mystery of
Christ to Paul at least in part yeah
Jesus appeared to him too he had visions
of Christ and Jesus appeared to him but
the spirit also gave Paul prophetic
utterance and gave him revelation of the
mystery by the spirit is what Paul
says how's the Holy Ghost work well we
need to rightly divide the scriptures
because if we don't we're going to mess
it up okay just like when we talk about
what is Christ doing today or what is
God doing today if we don't rightly
divide the scriptures we're going to
mess that up and maybe Christ is doing
the same thing he did with Israel maybe
Christ is doing the same thing he did in
the Old Testament god with Israel or
maybe God Has Changed what he's doing
he's operating according to the mystery
and so when we talk about the Holy Ghost
it's the same thing the Holy Ghost
testifies of Christ when Christ wants to
reveal himself according to the mystery
the Holy Ghost will teach Christ
according to the mystery this is why
I've said to you before I've never heard
a Pentecostal charismatic who preaches
the mystery of Christ because if they
preach the mystery of Christ they
wouldn't be Pentecostal charismatic
anymore they'd be mid acts right so I've
just never heard that never heard
someone say our patterns at at Pentecost
with tongues but actually the mystery
was revealed to Paul eight chapters
later never never heard that
okay talk to your Pentecostal friends
talk to them about what the spirit's
doing but we'll deal with in the the our
series here the next couple of months
how the Holy Ghost works okay we're
going to rightly divide the scripture
that's our approach the spirit knows and
works according to the mystery of Christ
and next week we'll deal with
how you receive the spirit and how do
you know you have him okay can you feel
his presence any comments any questions
about this topic actually I just raised
a bunch of questions for you so
hopefully you have a bunch yeah I've
heard different people mentioned that in
John 16 in verse 12 he says I have many
things to say you but you cannot bear
them now and he goes on to say when the spirit
spirit
comes guide you into all truth yeah yeah
it's the there John is saying that it's
basic or they would say that he's he's
giving them a little snippet of the
mystery that's yet to come here yeah um
any comments on that uh well I I don't
think it's a wrong thing to generally
apply that to the spirit because we've
already read the spirit revealed the
mystery so yeah it's still true the
spirit is going to guide them into all
truth right so he revealed this to Paul
it's not that Paul invented the mystery
or something like this it came from God
but John 16 12: 13 does not say anything
about what he's going interval so sure
yeah and and not only that um it's not
only speaking of the mystery so we can
only include it there just in general
speaking about the future yeah because
there are things that Peter in the
Hebrew Epistles are written down that
these guys didn't know remember these
guys didn't know he was going to
resurrect four chapters later C the
tomb's empty Peter thought someone stole
the body so you know these guys had
something to learn right and the Holy
Ghost came down and they start preaching
at Pentecost because the Holy Ghost told
them what to say so there were things
the Holy Ghost was going to teach them
so yeah just very generally we can look
forward and say well it's still true for
us as well but he was talking about them
he's not talking about he didn't never
mention the mystery of Christ he didn't
talk about any of that Jesus was not
changing what he was doing here except
for the Holy Ghost was was poured out so
yeah it's a good question though I've
heard that
too and so I used it that way hopefully
you saw that I wasn't putting us back
under Jesus's program but simply that um
the the Holy Spirit wouldn't speak of
himself and the Holy Spirit is is who
reveals the mystery uh this is the
source of confusion though we've talked
about it in the past about how people
get confused about when the church began
and a lot of people take the position
that the church began when the spirit
was poured out right so this is part of
the confusion as well and it's because
of verses like this where they see
something happening where the spirit
gets poured out and then you know truth
gets revealed so it must have been at
Pentecost when the church began or when
something new began something new
started we've dealt with that question
before but see this this is all
surrounding the operation of the Holy
Spirit the answer to to that of course
is that it's the same Spirit different
ministry right do you preach Jesus
Christ or do you reject him all together
because he taught the red letters no we
preach Jesus Christ according to the
revelation of the mystery so it's not
that we reject Jesus it's just we preach
Jesus according to the mystery he
revealed about himself not according to
the prophecy that was revealed about him
you see in the same way the Holy Spirit
operates today Same Spirit same Holy
Spirit according to a different Ministry
this is not unheard of in the scripture
and so when people think that every time
the spirit shows up he must be doing the
same thing like some sort of divine
lever you know machine that's just it's
just not accurate but that's not what
you asked thank you yes sir would uh
John 663 be where we'd end up with this
the spirit is
Spirit the
words today is is the spirit of God is
the spirit that quickens the flesh
profits nothing the words I speak to you
they are Spirit they are life um
the spirit here is not the Holy Spirit
um different yeah so he's not talking
Spirit this is not where we're going to
end up that was your question are we're
going to end up here that's he works
through us today through his word yes
yes that is correct and this his word is
yes yeah so you're right in that sense
yes you're right exactly right um what
I'm trying to guard against I don't mean
to beat around the bush is that the idea
that the holy spirit is not a person but
simply is word words is a force as
people teach that from Concepts like
this where that Jesus speaks words and
what he speaks that is the holy spirit
that's not true he's speaking words that
we read and that we grow by the holy
spirit is a person is a is a person with
power that dwells in you a holy spirit
in you it is not your spirit uh NE
neither is it uh just words that come
into your ears but but yes we're going
to end up saying that the Holy Ghost the
Holy Spirit inspired scripture and the
Holy Ghost speaks to you through the
words that he inspired in this book yes
that is
correct so you know Jesus isn't
explaining here anything in 1
Corinthians 2 anything like that but
he's making the contrast between his
physical flesh and blood and the
spiritual and so when he says it's the
spirit that quickens it's the spirit
that gives life he's talk about the
spiritual that sort of thing he's not
talking about the Holy Spirit person
himself even though it's true that God
gives life so yes the Holy Ghost and
Jesus God the Father they give life yes
but he's here talking about the contrast
between biting my arm and eating my
flesh and the spirit spiritual realities
you know in the same way in John 3 he
says um he have to be born again born of
the flesh born of the spirit so he's
he's he's he's making a cons between
flesh and spirit not necessarily flesh
and the Holy Spirit even though it is
true they had to have the Holy
Spirit is that confusing I hope don't
confuse the matter there you you are
right in that it's people that God works
us through through his word and I take
verse yes so that y the spirit quick W
the flesh profits nothing uh the words
that I speak un you they are Spirit they
alive yeah we we need to study God's
word so that the the the the take away
from what you're taking away from that
that we need to study God's words yes that's
question all right let's say our prayer
and we'll wrap it up Lord we thank you
so much for your word that you have
revealed to us that we can know uh how
you're working who the Holy Ghost is and
how we're to walk in the spirit uh I
pray that as we study this issue out
that we can clear up confusions that we
can uh better understand what you're
doing in our lives that we can live
lives uh more powerful in the sense that
we can do what you have us sent here to
do and so that we can fulfill your will
on Earth and we thank you for that
opportunity and that privilege as your ambassadors
