Core Theme
This content explains the spiritual warfare described in Ephesians 6, focusing on the importance of the "breastplate of righteousness" and "shoes of the preparation of the gospel of peace" as essential spiritual armor for Christians to stand firm against Satan's accusations and maintain stability, balance, and mobility in their faith.
[Music]
welcome to back to the bible radio
with pastor best-selling author and
internationally known bible teacher
warren weirsby
he has written more than 150 books on
subjects ranging from bible engagement
to practical ways we can move closer to
jesus each day
let's join dr weirsby and see what god's
word has for us today
ephesians 6 13 admonishes the believer
wherefore take unto you the whole
armor of god that ye may be able to withstand
withstand
in the evil day and having done all to stand
stand
stand therefore having your loins girded
about with truth
and having on the breastplate of righteousness
righteousness
stand therefore having on the
breastplate of righteousness
now to a roman soldier the breastplate
was very important
it was a coat of mail that covered the
soldier's body from the neck to the thighs
thighs
both front and back there's a tradition
that the christian doesn't have any armor
armor
to protect the back and therefore he
should not turn around and run
but actually the roman soldier paul was
looking at when he wrote these words was wearing
wearing
undoubtedly this breastplate and it covered
covered
his upper body from the neck to the
thighs both front
and back in other words it protected the
vital organs the heart
and the lungs and so forth now the christian
christian
soldier's coat of mail is the
righteousness of god
received by faith in jesus christ
it's what we call imputed righteousness
now in the bible you're going to find
two kinds of righteousness
imputed righteousness that which god
gives to
us by faith and imparted righteousness
that which we live out in our daily lives
lives
imputed righteousness is justification
imparted righteousness is sanctification
you read about imputed righteousness in
romans chapter 3 beginning at verse 19.
now we know that what things soever the
law saith
it saith to them who are under the law
that every mouth may be stopped and
all the world may become guilty before god
god
therefore by the deeds of the law there
shall no flesh be
justified in his sight for by the law is
the knowledge of sin
but now the righteousness of god
without the law is manifested being
witnessed by the law
and the prophets even the righteousness
of god
which is by faith of jesus christ unto
all and upon all them that believe for
there is no difference
for all have sinned and come short of
the glory of god
being justified freely by
his grace through the redemption that is
in christ jesus
imputed righteousness means god puts his righteousness
righteousness
on our account he not only goes to the
record book
and erases completely our record
but to make sure that nothing else is
written on that page
he puts his own righteousness on that page
page
and that settles it once and for all
when you turn to that page in the book
and there's your name written
down in heaven and under your name it
says righteous
in jesus christ that is imputed righteousness
righteousness
now we need to put this on every day
every day you need to by faith put on
the breastplate of righteousness and
reaffirm i am righteous in jesus christ
you're not depending on your own
righteousness you are depending on the
righteousness of jesus christ
why do you need this righteousness
because satan
is the accuser you see
we need to wear the girdle of truth
because satan is the divider
he wants us to practice duplicity we need
need
integrity that's the girdle of truth
satan is the one who denounces god's
people he's the accuser
and that's why we need the breastplate
of righteousness
because apart from the righteousness of
god through faith in jesus christ
we cannot stand against the evil one
revelation chapter 12 and verse 10 says
and i heard a loud voice saying in
heaven now is come
salvation and strength and the kingdom
of our god and the power of his christ for
for
the accuser of our brethren is cast down
which accused them before
our god day and night
satan is the accuser he accuses us
before god and he accuses god before
us when he talks to god about you he
tells the truth
because he knows the truth and when he
talks to you about god he lies
he accuses god of all sorts of things
that god never thought or
said or did now what is satan's strategy
well satan's strategy
is i think threefold number one satan
encourages us to accuse ourselves there
are some christians
who just have a perpetual autopsy a perpetual
perpetual
introspection and they're constantly
accusing themselves
now the devil can get you to accuse
yourself he's really want to battle
for example the memories that we have
can accuse
us memories of past sins i had a phone
call one day
a lady said i sinned grievously when i
was a young lady
and i really don't know about what i
should do because i've been
asked to teach a sunday school class i
don't think i'm worthy to teach it
what do you think i should do and i said
to her
are you a christian she said oh yes i've
trusted the lord what did the lord do
about those sins you committed as a
young lady well i guess they're forgiven
and gone
then serve the lord you see satan was
letting the memories accuse her
and my friend if you don't put on the
breastplate of righteousness your memory
is going to accuse you day and night and
you're going to be
put on the shelf you're going to put
yourself on the shelf
and god won't be able to use you you
will lose
ground to the devil satan wants our
memories to accuse citizens
satan wants our feelings to accuse us
sometimes our feelings are just
caused by poor eating or poor
ventilation or
bad exercise or no exercise or perhaps
we really are not getting enough
sleep we live in in bodies of clay
he knows our frame he remembers that
we're dust and our feelings come and go
and you get depressed and the devil
comes and says keep it up
keep throwing fuel on the fire self-pity
feel sorry for yourself
remember all the things you've done and
the things people have done to you
and before you know it you're defeated
satan encourages us to accuse ourselves
he wants us to remember past failures
he wants us to think of all the stupid
things we've said and done now what's
the answer
the breastplate of righteousness does
god know all these things he knows them
better than you do and better than satan does
does
what does god do about them puts them
under the blood of jesus christ they're gone
gone
buries them in the depths of the sea
blots them out like a thick cloud
takes them off the record we are wearing
the breastplate of righteousness
it's important to distinguish between
satan's accusation and god's conviction
god convicts us in love satan accuses us
in hatred
the holy spirit uses the word to convict
us satan uses feelings and memories and self-pity
self-pity
to accuse us when god convicts us
it draws us closer to him but when satan
accuses us
it pulls us away from the lord god's
conviction leads to discipline
and devotion satan's accusation leads to depression
depression
and discouragement when god convicts it
that we might look ahead and have hope
when satan accuses he wants us to look back
back
and to give up satan encourages us to accuse
accuse
ourselves put on by faith that
breastplate of righteousness
and claim the righteousness of christ
your sins are forgiven
the record is clean and he remembers
your sins against you no more
secondly satan encourages other people
to accuse us
i notice that everybody in the bible who
tried to serve the lord was falsely accused
accused
they accused nehemiah of trying to
become a king
they accused david of doing things he
never did many of the psalms
deal with david praying oh god silence
those liars
silence those false accusers in saul's court
court
who are telling him lies about me
now when other people accuse you turn
to your intercessor the lord jesus
christ romans chapter 8
puts this so beautifully verse 31
what shall we then say to these things
if god before us who can be against us
who shall lay anything to the charge of
god's elect it is
god that justifieth who is he that
condemneth it is christ that died
ye rather that has risen again who is
even at the right hand of god
who also maketh intercession for
us you see when you're wearing the
breastplate of righteousness you know
that the
interceding son of god in glory is
representing you before the throne of god
god
satan encourages us to accuse ourselves
and he encourages others to accuse us
and sometimes he makes us believe
that circumstances accuse us
oh if i were right with god we say i
wouldn't be going through this
difficulty that's what
job's friends told him oh how they
accused him
they said if the circumstances were different
different
we'd believe you job but what you're
going through is proof
that god is punishing you for your sins
we don't walk by
sight we walk by faith and we have
on the breastplate of righteousness and
no matter what the circumstances may be
god will not forsake us what shall separate
separate
us from the love of christ
shall tribulation or distress or
persecution or famine or nakedness or
peril or
sword nay and all these things we are
more than conquerors through him
that loved us satan is the accuser by
faith you put on the breastplate of
righteousness and you remember
that you're wearing it and when these
accusations come from circumstances or
from people
or from yourself just remember i'm
wearing the righteousness of jesus christ
christ
and the righteousness of jesus christ
makes me
stand therefore having your feet shod
with the preparation of the gospel of peace
peace
the roman soldier wore sandals that were firmly
firmly
fixed to his feet by leather thongs
on the soles of these sandals were hobnails
hobnails
to give the soldier a firm footing on
the ground
now that's the meaning of the greek word
that is translated preparation
in ephesians 6 15 and your feet shot
with the preparation of the gospel of peace
peace
it means a firm footing a foundation
you see if the soldier has trouble with
his feet
he cannot stand and if he cannot stand
he cannot fight well
well as christians we take our stand on
the gospel
and your feet shod with the preparation
of the gospel of peace the firm foundation
foundation
the firm footing of the gospel of peace
we had better be clear about what this
gospel is
it's given to us in first corinthians
chapter 15
moreover brethren i declare unto you the gospel
gospel
which i preached unto you which also ye
have received and
wherein ye stand notice that phrase now
in first corinthians 15 1 wherein
ye stand by which also you are saved
if you keep in memory what i preached
unto you unless ye have believed in vain
now here is the message for i delivered
unto you
first of all or of first importance
that which i also received how that
christ died for our sins according to
the scriptures
and that he was buried and that he rose
again the third day
according to the scriptures and that he
was seen of cephas
and then of the twelve and then paul
goes on to list the various resurrection
appearances of our lord
now this is the gospel and we stand in
the gospel
satan does not like the gospel message
satan wants
us to turn away from the gospel and
preach some other gospel
at the end of first corinthians 15 paul writes
writes
like this therefore my beloved brethren
be ye steadfast unmovable
always abounding in the work of the lord
for as much as ye know that your labor
is not in vain in the lord
at the beginning of this chapter we
stand in the gospel
at the end of first corinthians 15 he
says now you be
steadfast and unmovable when it comes to
serving the lord we ought to be on the move
move
we ought to be making progress when it
comes to the gospel we stand
on this gospel it does not need any
improvement paul said the same thing
when he wrote to the romans
romans 5 therefore being justified by
faith we have peace with god
through our lord jesus christ by whom
also we have access by faith into this
grace wherein
we stand we are standing in god's grace
we are standing with god in peace
because we have been justified by faith
we've been declared
righteous through faith in the lord
jesus christ
he wrote to the galatians in galatians
chapter 5
verse 1 stand fast therefore
in the liberty wherewith christ hath
made us free
and be not entangled again with the yoke
of bondage
we stand in the freedom of the gospel
in galatians chapter 1 verse 6 we read
i marvel that ye are so soon removed
from him
that called you into the grace of christ
onto another gospel
which is not another but there be some
that trouble you and would pervert the
gospel of christ
but though we or an angel from heaven
preach any other gospel unto you
than that which we have preached unto
you let
him be accursed that's pretty strong language
language
there is only one good news that's the
good news that christ
died for our sins according to the
scriptures he was buried
he arose again the third day according
to the scriptures
he was seen by witnesses he's alive today
today
and he can change your life that is the gospel
gospel
the world needs to know the gospel the
good news that nobody has to stay the
way he is
jesus christ has paid the price
jesus christ has released the power that
can transform
lives that's the gospel now as christian soldiers
soldiers
we have our feet shod with the
preparation of the gospel of peace
he compares the gospel to shoes
and these shoes give to us what we need in
in
this battle against satan
well what does god give to us when we
wear the shoes of peace number one he
gives to us stability
stability there are a lot of unstable
christian people in this world in
ephesians chapter 4
he talks about some of these unstable people
people
ephesians chapter 4 and verse 14
that we henceforth be no more children
toss to and fro and carried about with
every wind of doctrine
by the slight of men and cunning
craftiness by which they lie in wait to deceive
deceive
james tells us in james 1 6 that a
double-minded man is unstable in all of
his ways
in hebrews chapter 13 and verse 9 we read
read
be not carried about with divers and strange
strange
doctrines for it is a good thing that
the heart be established with grace not
with meats
which have not profited them that have
been occupied therein
don't be tossed to and fro by all these
strange doctrines
learn the word of god stand on the gospel
gospel
test every doctrine by the person
and the work of the lord jesus christ
otherwise you're going to start being
tossed to and fro and then you'll be
carried away
the important thing is to know the word
of god this is why
we minister it back to the bible we're
urging people to have
confidence in life through competence in
the word of god
some christians don't even know the
books of the bible
they don't even know where to find
things in the word of god
if some problem comes up they don't know
where to look
they might know the tv schedule they
might know the batting averages
of the various ball players but they
don't know their bibles
and that's a shame that's a tragedy when
you take your stand
on the gospel when you are wearing the gospel
gospel
shoes of peace wherever you go it means
you're taking your stand
on the gospel that gives you stability
and no matter what preacher or teacher
or radio
or television personality may come along
you'll be able to test what that person says
says
by the word of god
stability oh how we need that today some
of god's people are tumble weeds they're just
just
blowing hither and yawn they do not know
the word of god
and they're falling prey to all sorts of religious
religious
groups and they're wasting their time
and their energy and their
money on things that are not eternal
secondly when you have the gospel shoes
when you take your stand
on the gospel of jesus christ it gives
you balance
the soldier doesn't wear one shoe that
would put him out of balance he puts on
both shoes and he's able to take his
stand and have balance the devil
loves unbalanced christians now i'm not
saying christians who have lost their minds
minds
i'm saying christians who have lost
their balance
doctrine is like a person with two legs
it is balanced
when you're wearing the gospel shoes you
will be balanced in fact
the book of ephesians is a very balanced
book chapters one two and three
doctrine chapters four 5 and 6 duty
chapters 1 2 and 3 our wealth in christ
chapters 4
5 and 6 our walk in christ chapters 1 2
and 3
riches chapters 4 5 and 6 responsibility
when you read ephesians you see balance
there's a balance between the individual christian
christian
and the corporate life of the church
there's a balance between delighting in
the lord and defending
the things of the lord and so when you
take your stand on the gospel god will
give you
stability you won't be tossed to and fro
and god will give you balance and
thirdly god will give you
mobility that roman soldier with those
hobnailed shoes on had
mobility he was able to move to adjust
if the enemy came from one side he could
go to that side
if the enemy came from another side he
could shift to there
the problem in the church today is we
are standing and we will not move
you don't wear shoes to stand still the
soldier was not a statue
on a platform on a pedestal he was
wearing the gospel
shoes that he might be able to exercise mobility
mobility
a firm footing to respond to the tactics
of the enemy
if you want to know in one simple
sentence what is wrecking the work of
god today it is this
unwillingness to change i'm not saying
changing shoes no we're standing on the gospel
gospel
we do not change the gospel i'm saying
changing our tactics changing our approach
approach
the ability to change is important
in fighting the enemy finally
when you are taking your stand on the gospel
gospel
god gives you not only stability and balance
balance
and mobility but he gives you opportunity
opportunity
opportunity for ministry you see we're
not just
fighting we're also seeking to get the
gospel out
we're not resting against flesh and
blood the people who create
problems in our lives are the people we
need to reach with the gospel
and when you're always wearing the shoes
of peace you're
always ready to witness for christ
are you wearing the gospel shoes today
do you have a readiness to share
the gospel with others when you're
wearing those gospel shoes
and you're ready to witness god will
give you
opportunity this is the kind of
christian soldier i want to be
one who has stability and balance
one who has mobility and one who uses
opportunity for ministry
to share the good news of the gospel
we're glad you joined us today if you
