Good morning, Pilgrim. Grace and truth
to you.
Grace and truth from Hillsboro, Oregon,
garden shed converted into an office.
God bless you. Grace and peace, Pilgrim.
Got a message for you today. I've been
worrying. I've been anxious about uh
about this uh meeting coming up on the
6. Been all anxious and worried about
it. Been all anxious and worried about
this website. I got to got to get together.
together.
Been all worried and anxious about uh
the next days uh today's
uh video. you know, I worry and anxious
a lot.
But so I'm going to do this uh little
message, little devotion talking about
anxiety and worry. Isn't that crazy? Me
a worry wart.
Me an anxious person.
Well, Pilgrim, there's an absolute truth
every heart needs to hear, especially
me. Listen, Lawrence, listen. Listen to
this. Anxiety and worry are are burdens
we all face.
I put this all together.
I read the Bible and I think about this.
Boy, I hope I hear it good. But we're
never left alone in them. No, we're
never left alone in our in our burdens
we face. God cares.
He cares deeply for us pilgrim. Let's
never forget that. And his word, it
offers real hope. It offers real hope.
It's full of help.
So today, let's sit down together and
talk about overcoming anxiety and worry.
You pray for me, I'll pray for you.
Yeah. There's there's no fancy talk
here. It's just a simple strong
encouragement found in Jesus Christ.
That one who loves you and knows your
every need.
He loves me too.
Why do sometimes I not
think think more deeply about that?
You know the the reality of anxiety and
worry. It it's real.
It does bug us at times. Anxiety is one
of the most common struggles in our
world today. Worry, worry, worry.
Whether it's about our health,
about our families, about our future, or
what others think of us,
worry can sneak up and settle in our hearts.
hearts.
Sometimes it feels like it's out of our
control, like a storm. Storm we can't
escape. I got to worry about this.
But the Bible, it teaches that with
God's help, we can learn to guide our
thoughts and and find peace. Peace in Jesus.
Jesus.
Trust him. Trust him.
Jesus said in John 14:es 26 and 27,
"But the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom
the Father will send in my name, he will
teach you all things and bring to your
remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace,
Peace,
not worry. Peace I leave with you.
My peace not worry.
My peace I give to you. Not as the world
gives which gives us lots of worry.
Not as the world gives do I give to you.
Let not your hearts be troubled.
Let's dwell on that. Huh? God has given
us his spirit to help us.
Most folks, they never realize how much
they can actually shape their own
thinking. With practice, with prayer,
with leaning on the Lord, the battle
against anxiety can be overcome,
or at least managed so it doesn't
run your life, ruin your life.
Philippians 4:7,
"And the peace of God, which surpasses
all understanding, will guard your
hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
God's plan for his children is not a
life ruled by fear. As Paul wrote in 2
Timothy 1:7, "For God,
he gave us a spirit not of fear, but of
Jesus had this. He offers it to us.
What does the Bible say about worry?
Well, worry isn't new. Folks in Bible
times had their own anxieties.
They worried about food, safety. They
worried about their future and and more.
Jesus spoke plainly about it. He said in
"Therefore, I tell you, do not be
anxious about your life, what you'll
eat, what you'll drink, nor about your
body, what you'll put on. Is not life
more than food?
Isn't the body
more than clothing?
Look at the birds of the air. Look out
the window. Look at those birds.
Look at them. Learn from them. Look at
the birds of the air. They neither sow.
They don't reap. They don't gather into
barns. And and yet your heavenly father
feeds them. Are you not of more value
than they?
And which of you by being anxious can
add a single hour to his span of life?
Nothing. We can't do it.
But seek first the kingdom of God and
his righteousness, and all these things
will be added to you.
Trust God.
He'll do you right. He'll do his will.
And his will is right.
Jesus pointed out that worry doesn't add
a single hour to our lives. Not one.
Instead, he calls us to trust our
heavenly father. Our heavenly father who
knows he knows what we need even before
we ask.
And there's a principle. It's called the
principle of sowing and and reaping.
The Bible teaches that what we sow we
reap. Galatians 6:7 tells us,
"Don't be deceived. God is not mocked.
For whatever one sws that will he also reap.
reap.
If we sow worry, fear will reap more the
same. Yeah, it seems to multiply,
doesn't it?
But if we sow faith,
faith in our Lord,
if we pray often,
pray always, if we trust in God, we'll
reap peace. will
will
grow strong.
Proverbs 11:18 reminds us,
"The wicked earns deceptive wages, but
one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward."
reward."
Jesus also said in Luke 6:37 and 38,
"Judge not and you'll be not judged.
Condemn not, and you'll you'll not be
condemned. Forgive and you will be
forgiven. Give and it'll be given to
you. Good measure pressed down, shaken
together, running over, will be put into
your lap.
For with the measure you use, it'll be
Many times anxiety has roots in past hurts,
hurts,
in past disappointments or fears about
the future.
Sometimes it's caused by things we don't
even realize by old habits, by ways of thinking.
thinking.
Are we positive all the time? Are we
negative all the time?
Let's be balanced. Are things we picked
up from from others?
Paul wrote in Romans 7:15, "For I don't
understand my own actions.
For I don't do what I want, but I do the
very thing I hate."
Said, "That's it is."
We all struggle. Sometimes we repeat
patterns without meaning to. That's why
we need the Holy Spirit, pilgrim. We
need him to bear his fruit in our lives.
Galatians 5:22 and 23 says, "But the
fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
Is our inde identity is it is it in
Christ or someone else or something else?
else?
In the middle of anxiety and and worry,
don't forget who you are in Christ.
You are loved
by Jesus,
by the father. Romans 5'8 says, "But God
shows his love for us in that while we
were still sinners, Christ died for us." [sighs]
[sighs]
Would he die for you if he didn't like
you, if he hated you?
You are accepted, pilgrim. Ephesians 1:6
says, "To the praise of his glorious
grace with which he has blessed us in
the beloved,
you're not condemned." Romans 8:1 says,
"There is therefore now no condemnation
to those who are in Christ Jesus."
No matter what we're facing, no matter
what you're facing, I'm facing
dealing with anxiety.
Let's look at Israel. What' they do?
The Israelites when asked to take
fortified cities.
Yeah. They were crippled by fear. They
said, "We ain't going up against those giants."
giants."
Anxiety and worry. They can feel just as
overwhelming to us. The New Testament
tells us there's no condemnation for
those in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1. Jesus has absorbed God's
wrath for us. We got nothing to worry
about. Jesus takes care of it all.
But that doesn't mean Christians are
free from anxiety and depression. No,
for many of these are daily realities.
Sometimes just getting through a day
feels like conquering Canaan. We got to
conquer the devil.
But remember,
those who suffer anxieties aren't like
the Israelites who chose to defy God.
They do anything to avoid it.
God has already acted, pilgrim. He's
done it through Jesus. He's dealt with
sin and promises to remove all tears in
the age to come.
Revelation 21 3 and4 says, "And I heard
a loud voice from the throne saying,
behold, the dwelling place of God is
with man.
He will dwell with them, and they will
be his people, and God himself will be
with them as their God. He'll wipe away
every tear from their eyes. Death will
be no more, neither shall there be
mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore.
For the former things have passed away."
What me worry? What's to worry about?
What's to worry about?
from now to eternity.
My future
is Jesus's.
The cross and the empty tomb are
permanent signs of God's action even in
the storms of anxiety.
The gospel doesn't remove all anxiety
now, but it shows us God has acted and
will act again.
He's a God who can cast all our
anxieties on. We can throw them away.
He'll take care of it because he cares
for you.
1 Peter 5:7 says, "Casting all your
anxieties on him,
on Jesus,
because he cares for you.
The Bible speaks directly to anxiety,
both as a command and as a comfort.
Instead of letting worry take over,
we're told to bring our concerns to God
in prayer and thanksgiving.
Philippians 4 6-7.
Don't be anxious about anything, but in
everything by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving, let your requests be
known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses
all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in
Christ Jesus.
the Bible. It makes a difference between
true concern and destructive worry.
Sometimes anxiety is just caring deeply
for for someone else like your your
husband, your wife, your children. Worry
about them. Worry about them.
But when it takes over, it can keep us
from trusting God.
Put them in God's hands.
Freedom from anxiety comes through trust
and prayer.
Cast your anxieties on God. He cares for
you. 1 Peter 5:7.
Perfect peace comes to those whose minds
stay fixed on God. Isaiah 26:3.
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind
is stayed on you
because he trusts in you.
pilgrim overcoming anxiety starts by
recognizing it isn't God's will.
He don't want you to worry. No, he don't.
don't.
Anxiety quietly suggests God isn't able.
He's not willing to care for us. But
that's a lie. That's not true.
God loves us. Isaiah 41:10 says, "Fear
not, for I'm with you.
Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I
will strengthen you. I will help you. I
will uphold you
with my righteous right hand.
Jesus offers his peace to his followers
Peace I leave with you. My peace I give
to you. Not as the world gives do I give
to you. Let not your hearts be troubled.
Neither let them be afraid.
God gives not a spirit of fear, but
power, love, self-control. Second
Timothy 1:7.
Charles Spurgeon, he once said, "Anxiety
it it it doesn't empty tomorrow of its
sorrows, but only empties today of its strength."
strength."
Thomas Brooks, he wrote, "Let not your
fears be betray your faith, nor your
faith be betray your fears, but strive
to bring your faith to bear upon your fears.
fears.
Use the strength you have and God's
given you. John Owen reminded the
greatest sorrow and burden you can lay
on the father, the greatest unkindness
you can do to him is not to believe that
he loves you.
So in conclusion,
what does Jesus say?
Repeat it. Let not your hearts be troubled.

Believe in God. Believe also in me. John
