welcome to the sarpi county safety
program safe driving class I'm
Lieutenant Kyle perfield with the sarpi
county sheriff's office and I will be
your instructor for the class
today so a little bit about me I've been
a deputy sheriff for 16 years and I'm
currently the commander of the
investigations division which covers
criminal investigations narcotics and fugitive
fugitive
investigations I also am on our crash
Response Team uh and help run that team
uh basically a math and iics nerd we
respond to all serious injur and
fatality crashes in sarpi County uh and
investigate and reconstruct those I'm
also a crisis and hostage negotiator and
when I'm not busy with all of that I am
also an adjunct faculty member at Peru
State College I have a bachelor science
and criminal justice and a masters of public
administration uh some basic class rules
uh your cell phone use is suggested to
be limited uh so that you can pay
attention and ensure that you can pass
the quiz at the end of this course to
successfully complete it uh you must
watch the entire educational video to
receive credit for this class during the
video keywords will be provided several
times throughout the course these
keywords will not be traffic specific
and you must get the questions asking
what the keywords were 100% correct in
the quiz to pass the class if you do not
get these correct you will not pass the
class and you will have to retake it
however upon successful completion of
the class you do not have to pay your
citation you don't need to go to court
and your record will not reflect this
charge if you were cited for multiple
offenses on your citation you must
contact the sarpi county attorney's
office regarding your citation they can
be reached at 42593
2230 you will receive a confirmation
email from the sarpi county safety
program after successfully registering
for the course information about
receiving a certificate and any other
pertinent information will be in that
email please refer to it with any
course in today's class we will be going
over the Nebraska drivers manual
Nebraska rules of the road some
distracted driving information
information on Motor Vehicle crashes
impaired driving and then you will test your
knowledge we'll begin with the Nebraska
rules of the
road in Nebraska we have a point system
you start with zero points it's similar
to golf you want to keep that score as
close to zero as possible an
accumulation of 12 points in a 2-year
period results in a six-month suspension
of your driving privileges if you are
suspended twice for points violations
within 5 years uh you will receive a
three-year revocation of your driving
privileges uh provisional operators
permits or pops we'll get into what
those are here in just a little bit but
they can only accumulate six points in a
2-year period points cancel or go away 2
years from the date of the conviction
but the actual conviction itself will
remain on your driving record for 5
years so insurance companies and those
sort of things will be able to see that
for quite some time after the goes away
scale examples of points motor vehicle
homicide and dii third offens those are
both 12 points leaving the scene of a
crash is six DUI for first and second
offenses is six points reckless driving
five careless driving is four texting
and driving is three points and then for
speeding it just depends on how fast
over the limit you were cited or found
guilty of going 1 to 5 miles per hour is
1 point 6 to 10 is 2 11 to 35 is 3
points pops are provisional operators
permits that's what people age 16 and 17
get issued in the state of Nebraska you
can go about getting it a few different
ways uh you can uh have a learner's
permit and either complete a DMV
approved safety course which is like
driver's ed or log 50 hours of driving
time and have it signed off by a parent
or guardian and then uh complete a
written and driving test uh for those
who haven't done driver Zed uh and you
can do that at your local DMV there are
some additional rules for people who
hold a provisional operators permit uh
they cannot use their their cell phone
at all only one friend under the age of
19 who is um like not immediate family
can be writing with them for the first 6
months uh basically they can't have the
carload of friends for those first six
months riding around with them and they
cannot drive from Midnight to 6: a.m.
unsupervised unless it's for a school
work or church function or if they have
a passenger with them who's 21 years or
older so essentially for those 6 hours
again they have something similar to a learner's
permit uh some statistics uh from uh the
Nebraska uh Highway Safety Office with
the Department of Transportation uh
these are a little bit old but sometimes
these statistics take a while to get
compiled uh the most recent ones that
the highway safety office released were
from 2020 and that states that team
drivers age 19 and younger represent
5.2% of all drivers in Nebraska and 78%
of the Teen traffic fatalities 18 of
those in
2020 78% were not wearing a seat belt
14% % of drivers uh uh excuse me 14% of
all reported crashes were with teen
drivers 25% of those occurred between
9:00 p.m. and midnight 14% of crashes
between midnight and 3:00 a.m. 31% of
them involved cell phone use 22% were
speed related 19% failure to yield 28%
were single vehicle rollovers 19% were
due to road conditions like snow ice and
water 26% of those were rear end type
all right required vehicle equipment
this supplies to 99% of vehicles out on
the roadways you have to have working
headlights tail lights brake lights a
horn turn signals windshield wipers seat
belts a muffler two systems of brakes so
that's your regular brake like your um
brake pedal along with an emergency
brake like a parking brake and you must
have safety glass and all windows you
must also carry with you your driver's
license your vehicle's current valid
registration and veh current proof of
insurance uh digital insurance cards are
accepted in Nebraska if you have to
present a digital insurance card on your
phone just let the officer Deputy or
Trooper know that that is where your uh
insurance card is located that you need
to pull it up on your phone and they'll
allow you time uh to do that uh a lot of
times it'll be when they go back to
their vehicle to complete whatever
paperwork they need to do for that
traffic stop uh it's a pretty regular
thing and a lot of people are opting
now uh Nebraska registered vehicles must
display two license plates one on the
front bumper and one on the rear bumper
U however you can now pay the DMV an
annual fee uh which will give you a
sticker to make you exempt from having a
front license plate uh renewal sticker
shall be placed in the top right corner
over the prior year sticker not all over
plate traffic control signals red
lights pretty simple means you have to
stop TR you stop before the stop bar or
crosswalk or before entering the inter
intersection that one's pretty easy uh a
yellow light is a warning that the green
is terminating and that a red is pending
traffic may not enter the intersection
and speeding up to beat the yellow light
is illegal um most crashes that happen
at light controlled intersections are
from when people are attempting to run a
yellow light one is usually trying to
turn left and the other is trying to go straight
straight
through and when they do that uh we
usually have a crash because they're
both uh usually speeding up or trying to
beat uh each other and unfortunately end
up in the same spot in the intersection
um it is the same thing as running a red
light uh and you will be cited for it
and a green light uh means that traffic
may proceed through the intersection if
so uh turning left to right I'll give
you the boring DMV definition that'll
make it a little bit easier to
understand uh right turn shall be made
as close as practical to the right hand
curb or edge of the roadway and the left
turn shall be made so as to leave the
intersection as nearly as practical p in
the extreme left hand lane lawfully
available to traffic moving in such
Direction upon the roadway being entered
it's very long and confusing way just
saying turn into the inside Lane if you
are in the left lane and and the where
the red line is indicated and attempting
to turn left you must turn in to that
nearest left lane at the same time
someone where the blue line is
indicating can turn right onto the same
roadway uh no vehicle has more Right Way
in this situation and turn making their
turn um you must turn into the lane
that's closest to you if you turn into
the outside Lane uh and sideswipe the
other vehicle you will be found um at a
traffic law violation and usually at
crash uh some rules for passing it is
unlawful to pass in a marked no passing
zone when uh to exceed the posted speed
limit to pass uh passing a school bus
with its rub light flashing within 100
ft of any intersection or railroad
crossing and on a hill curve Bridge or
obstructed this is our first keyword of the
the
quiz you must record this word the
keyword will be used later in the quiz
to verify that you watch the entire
video you must get all keywords correct
on the quiz at the end of the class to
successfully complete the course this
the school bus stop arm flashing yellow
means that a stop is pending and a
flashing red mean students are exiting
drop from a stop in all directions at a
reasonable distance obviously not
stopping is unlawful this is the highest
find that we can write a citation before
we have to send some to court it is a $500
$500
fine however uh there is one exception
motorists on the opposing side of of a
divided median roadway do not need to
stop a divided median roadway is a
roadway that has a physical barrier that
separates the opposing Lanes of of
travel like a concrete median or a grass
median for those familiar with serpi
County Highway 370 is a great example of
a divided median roadway uh there's
either a grassp median or raised
concrete median that separates uh the
East and Westbound Lanes of travel so if
a bus was on the eastbound side and
stopped and you were on the westbound
side you don't need to stop since
there's a physical barrier separating
you however if you're on a roadway that
just has a yellow painted line
separating you from the opposing traffic
this is a News segment from CBS News in
2018 about a crash where twin boys uh
and their nine-year-old sister were
struck uh in
Indiana the deaths of a 9-year-old girl
and her twin six-year-old Brothers at a
school bus stop in Indiana are raising
new current new concerns rather about
children's safety a pickup truck hit the
little kids and another boy who was
seriously hurt while they were crossing
the street to their stop bus on Tuesday
Morning the truck driver a 24-year-old
woman is now charged with three counts
of Reckless homicide Dean Reynolds is
min is in minone Indiana Dean good
morning this is just such a terrible terrible
terrible
story good morning Gail unbelievable
really all three children uh who were
killed just about 24 hours ago attended
this Elementary School here behind me
and now as you say there are questions
about whether School Bus saf safety may
have played a role in this heartbreaking
tragedy Troopers and First Responders
don't do a lot of cry that seems like
this but today there were some tears
shed Indiana State Police Sergeant Tony
slokum says just before sunrise Tuesday
Morning 9-year-old Olivia stall and her
twin six-year-old Brothers Xavier and
Mason Engel were struck by a truck and
killed while crossing a rural road to
their school bus all evidence so far
indicates the bus had its uh lights
activated and had to stop arm extended
it is illegal in all 50 states to pass a
school bus when it is stopped with its
lights flashing and stop arm extended
but by one estimate more than 15 million
Americans illegally passed by stop
school buses during the last school year
that's nearly 85,000 times each school
day cameras have caught just how
dangerous that can be in Austin Texas a
car slammed into this child who just got
off the bus he was able to walk
away and in Charleston West Virginia a
car just missed hitting this child one
of the solutions explored is adding
extended stop sign arms to the side of
the buses it does not appear the bus in
Indiana had that it's horrible that this
happened Elgen Engel is the uncle of
Olivia Xavier and Mason they were
holding hands every day on the way to
the bus stop and including today it
looks like Olivia stepped in front of
the car for the boys it looks like
Olivia seen what was happening and she
stepped up like a
hero I wish she could have saved her
hero now the driver of the pickup has
also been charged with a misdemeanor for
passing a stopped school bus she is now
released on a $155,000 bond meanwhile
the mother of the 11-year-old child who
was seriously hurt yesterday says he has
successfully undergone three surgeries
but has a long road to recovery ahead of
him Nora I cannot imagine what these
parents are going through Dean thank
you the basic speed law in Nebraska
requires driving at a speed that is
reasonable and prudent under existing
road conditions this usually applies to
adverse weather in the winter uh speeds
must be reduced to maintain a safe
operating Speen if you are found driving
too fast for roadway conditions and you
lose control of your vehicle or strike
another vehicle you can be cited for
exactly that driving too fast for the
conditions even if you were doing what
the speed limit was on that roadway but
it was too fast based on too much snow
or rain or whatever it might be you can
citation uh the state of Nebraska has
set speed limits based on uh what type
of roadway uh you are on cities counties
and the state can change the speed limit
through different uh enactments of law
or ordinances however if there is no
posted change you are expected to know
what the state set speed limits are for
a rural interstate highway it is 75 mes
hour for a freeway it is 70 M hour State
Highway 65 hard surface county road 55
miles per hour gravel roads are 50 mes
per hour residential districts 25
business districts 20 and for school
zones and along with work zones
uh the speed limit is whatever is posted
585747 fine and second offense is a $500
fine or 7 days in jail that sign on the
right is a sign that you'll see around
the state of Nebraska posted by Statute
indicating uh that you are needing to
vehicles this is a news clip uh locally
from 2024 where a cesco police officer
was killed during a failure to move over
incident a dedicated and a steadfast
Community servant who wore his badge
proudly on many uniforms that's the way
officer Russ Marlin's co-workers
remember him the cesco police officer
was hit and killed during a traffic stop
Friday night on Highway 77 as KV news
watch 7 Zed oaki reports his career span
three decades including serving the
County a brand new fir truck sits in
front of the cesco volunteer Firehouse
to honor one of their own Ross
Bartlett's gear and helmet place in the
front along with a rose both Bartlett
and his wife Tina were members of the
squad Bartlett was in charge of training
Madison County Sheriff Todd vul says the
couple did the same thing when they
lived in northeast Nebraska he wore his
badge proudly uh he had wore several
different ones from different apartments
over the years and um he was a friend
and he was a friend of the communities
that he worked for vul says Bartlett was
a Madison police officer and worked
part-time at the Sheriff's Office doing
court security Dependable um if you had
a if you were out on a call or something
like thought needed backup he was coming
and he was extremely professional you
know there's a lot of times where things
could have gotten out of hand and either
working in our court there or even when
he was an officer with the Madison
police department um he was able to
handle himself and just talk with people
for the past seven years Bartlett was an
investigator for the Nebraska Department
of Corrections and also worked part-time
as a cesco police officer on Friday
evening he was conducting a traffic stop
on Highway 77 when a pickup struck his
Cruiser from from behind killing him it
you know hit me pretty hard when I got
called by his daughter Saturday morning
folks says they all know their job is
dangerous he hopes this is a reminder to
everyone else on the road if you see
flashing red and blue lights you better
be slowing down and up this shouldn't
happen that way in Sesco Andrew oaki KV
news watch
7 funeral services for Bartlett is
Friday 10:30 a.m. at St Marks in Lincoln
a fundraiser for the Bartlett Family is
being held at the Red Rooster restaurant
in cesco from Tuesday to Thursday 5:00
p.m. to 9:00 p.m. meanwhile the state
patrol says they're continuing to
investigate the crash so far the driver
of the truck 49-year-old Tony Pierce has
not been cited he was not seriously [Music]
injured this is a diagram showing best
practice for moving over as you can see
the police officer in this illustration
is called over a blue vehicle and the
brown car is approaching the best thing
to do is to move over that one lane to
the left uh where that red vehicle and
the arrow indicate however if you cannot
move over because it is rush hour or
something to that effect uh you just
need to slow down to pass them at a safe
speed and then you can pick your speed
back up once you have passed whatever is
road right away for emergency vehicles
uh you should pull over as close to the
roadway and stop if a emergency vehicle
is approaching you from any direction uh
the key there is the right side of the
roadway uh even if you're in the left
lane you should still pull over to the
right lane of the shoulder if you pull
over to the left while we appreciate
your effort you have usually made it
more difficult because now there is a
vehicle on the left side of the road
which usually has no or a very small
shoulder and uh often times vehicle on
the right uh and now we have basically a
roadblock that we have to try to
navigate so even if you're in that left
lane still pull over to the right side
of the road
don't stop in an intersection you don't
know where that emergency vehicle is
trying to go so if you stop in an
intersection you may be blocking them
remain stopped until the emergency
vehicle has passed and watch for other
emergency vehicles fire trucks and
ambulances usually leave the same
building around the same time so once
one passes you make sure you're watching
and listening to ensure another is not
right behind it uh you cannot follow
firet truck within 500 ft or park on the
same block as a firet Tru and funeral
escort vehicles are considered emergency
vehicles and you are are required to
them some other rules of the road always
obey a police officer directing traffic
I know that that seems self-explanatory
uh but it never fails that when we're
out directing traffic uh which is
typically for a crash people will ask uh
what is happening or if they can keep
going that way because it's the only way
they know or something to that effect
please don't stop and talk to the
officers it's not that they don't want
to be friendly uh but they are trying to
focus us on keeping traffic flowing and
preventing additional crashes and if
they have to stop to offer directions or
answer questions it makes them lose
focus and uh create a more dangerous
situation pedestrians High the RightWay
in crosswalks even if you have a green
light so make sure that you yield to a
pedestrian in a crosswalk uh bicyclists
have the same duties as a vehicle on a
roadway uh so they must follow all laws
and they do have the right to be there
except for controlled access highways
such as an interstate and window tint in
Nebraska you canot have you tint below
35% for the front windows and 20% for
the rear and back windows and you Cann
not have any tint below the as1 line on
your windshield if you're not familiar
where that is if you look up in the top
left where your oil change sticker
usually goes you'll see little writing
that says as1 with a line or an arrow
you cannot have any tint below that
section on your
windshield next we're going to watch a
video on the six conditions of driving [Music]
most of you will drive a car every day
you open the door get in buckle up start the
the
car put it in drive and head to your
destination based on statistics most
people are more interested in how fast
they get where they're going than
getting there safely do you know how
many people die in the US in car wrex
every year
42,000 that's right 42,000 people a year
get in their car drive away and never
come back where did they go wrong while
you're driving you incur six different
conditions these are the six conditions
of driving it's important that you
recognize these conditions and that you
drive accordingly these conditions are
always present whether in our favor or
not because of these conditions no two
trips are ever the same sometimes
conditions can change during a trip
every wreck that we could possibly be in
can be contributed to at least one of
these conditions the six conditions of
driving are driver light Road weather
vehicle and
traffic when talking about the driver I
would like to start with a statistic in
the US 85% of all traffic wrecks are due
to driver error you do not get in wrecks
because of bad luck you get in wrecks
because you do things wrong the driver
is often the only condition that you can
control it's the Driver's Responsibility
to know the rules of the road and the
conditions in which you're driving I
would like to ask you a question what is
the number one type of wreck in the US
it's the rear end collision how does it
happen not paying attention is not the
answer following too close is the answer
did you know that it takes the average
person 1 second to see the brake lights
of the car in front of them and then
move their foot to the brake the
driver's not pressed the brake they've
just moved their foot to the brake you
are human it takes a second or so to
react to What you see so if you are 1
second behind the car in front of you
and they slam on the brakes you are
going to hit them so what is a safe
following distance well the answer is 3
seconds your vehicle should be 3 seconds
behind the car in front of you under
normal driving conditions when
conditions change such as rain you
should increase your following
distance so how does a 3second rule work
well as the car in front of you passes a
stationary object such as a sign or
pavement marking you should be able to
count 3 seconds before you cross that
same object if you do not leave enough
time to react then you are relying on
the person in front of you to not slam
on brakes when you follow too closely
you do not control your fate the person
in front of you controls your fate so if
you run into the car in front of you
it's not because you're having a bad day
or because the guy in front of you as a
Jerk It's because you did not leave
yourself enough room to react to what
you saw other factors the driver has to
deal with are hearing Vision illness
Mobility teenagers love to listen to
music this is okay but you need to
remember that you also need to be able
to hear things outside of music while
you are driving you need to be able to
hear emergency vehicles horns from other
vehicles and hear things in your own car
such as Tire problems or engine knocking
you should never wear earphones while driving
driving
Vision most decisions you make are based
on what you can see as you get older
your eyesight May diminish if you notice
this you should get corrective lenses
immediately you should use sunglasses
when necessary and make sure to use your
sun visor when the sun is low in the sky
when changing lanes you should always
check your blind spot to make sure it's
clear to move into the other lane do you
know what a BL spot is it's the area
beside your vehicle that you cannot see
in your mirrors it's located in the lane
beside you left or right across from
your back tire you should spend most of
your time looking in front of you you
should only check traffic behind you
every 10 seconds you should also avoid
looking at one thing more than a second
or so your ey should be scanning the
road ahead of you
you
illness everyone gets sick medication is
a wonderful asset to our lives however
some medication can make you feel less
than 100% it is your responsibility to
know the effects of any medication
before you drive if you're driving and
you start to feel light-headed or dizzy
from medication you should pull over
immediately and call for help you can
receive a DUI from prescription
medication if you're involved in a wreck
and it can be proven that you were
impaired then the law will prosecute you
the victims will seek justice as well in
addition you could be seriously injured or
or killed
killed
drowsiness drowsiness comes from a lack
of visual stimulation in the mornings
when you're at school and you start to
feel sleepy you may not be tired but you
may be drowsy it's easy to become drowsy
when driving on long road trips what are
some of the things you can do when you
feel drowsy well you can open a window
and vent in some fresh air you can turn
on the radio and sing along you can stop
and get out we safe and exercise or stretch
stretch
you can also bring some food and you can
eat as you eat your body heats up which
can help with drowsiness you may also
find you get drowsy when you drive at
certain times during the day do not
ignore this fact you can try to avoid
driving during that time or have someone
else drive if these things do not work
then pull over safely and let someone
help
fatigue do you ever get tired fatigue is
different than drowsiness fatigue is
when your body is in or going into a
state of exhaustion you go to school or
work all day then you have practice or
erand then you have to drive home the
danger with fatigue is that it can only
be fixed by sleep or rest if you too
tired to drive then let a friend drive
or call for help you need to see the big
picture if you die in a car because you
were tired they did not bring you back
in life it's over slow down increase
Mobility at a young age your Mobility
will probably not be a big issue however
as you get older it may become a problem
you will need to turn and look back and
beside you from time to time we've
talked about checking blind spots when
you change lanes and how imperative it
is to turn your head and look into the
blind spot you also need to look back
when you put your vehicle in Reverse you
should not use your mirrors when backing
up because of blind spots a child or
person could easily walk into the path
of your vehicle and you will not see
them unless you turned and looking out
of the back
window distracted
driver drivers today are more distracted
than ever with new technology come great
things however using these things in the
car can prove to be deadly using radios
CD players MP3 players navigational
systems cell phones and computers are
just a few of the items of distraction
when you use any of these items while
driving you're doing two things at one
time when you're talking on your cell
phone are you focused on the call or
you're driving when you're changing out
your CDs or texting are you more focused
on the phone or on your driving with the
new GPS systems we can find our
locations easier than ever before but
you should never try and put in the
address while you're driving you should
pull over and then put the address into
the GPS texting and driving is now
proven to be more dangerous than
drinking and driving Plus it's against the
the law
law
habits habits are formed from repetition
you have many habits in your daily lives
how many of you brushed your teeth this
morning did you put your toothbrush
under the water did you ever think about
it it's been proven that it takes 14
days to form a habit however it takes 21
days to replace that habit it's very
important that we form good habits it's
also important that we recognize the bad
habits we picked up and replace those
ones mental
conditions you will have to deal with
mental conditions when you drive
everyone has to deal with things like
stress and emotions you may be dealing
with exams or meaning a deadline or
listening to the horn from the guy
behind you as you become emotionally
charged it will affect your attitude you
will have to find ways to deal with
these emotions this can lead to road
rage there are two kinds of road rage
the first kind is you having road rage
when you're you reach this state you may
be doing things that you normally would
not do you may take risks that you
wouldn't take you may put yourself in a
position to be injured or even killed
second there is road rage against you
when this happens you have someone who
is willing to cause bodily harm to prove
their anger your reaction to this could
add fuel to the fire every year people
are shot beat up driven off the road
cursed at flipped off and assaulted from
people who have road rage you should
always try and diffuse the situation if
someone is showing signs of road rage
against you you will need to keep a
level head try saying I'm sorry remember
there's always someone crazier than
you light
conditions almost all the decisions a
driver makes is based on what they see
if you cannot see clearly you may not
make a wise decision in order to see
clearly you must have adequate light too
much light or too little light can be D
dangerous too much light in the rain or
fog will only reflect the light back
into your eyes you should always use
your low beam headlights in the rain and
fog you may experience too much light
when the sun is low in the sky early in
the morning and late in the evening make
sure you use sunglasses when needed and
always use your sun visor to minimize
the effect of sun glare have you ever
heard of overrunning your headlights do
you know what that means the average car
low beam headlights will give you about
100t ft of vision you'll have about 200
ft of vision with your highbeam
headlights when you're traveling at a
speed of 35 mph it will take you about
100 ft to stop when you're traveling at
53 mph it will take you 200 ft to stop
in both situations above if something is
blocking the road like a train you would
stop just in time if you're going any
faster than the speed I mentioned you're
overrunning your headlights you would
not have enough time to stop your
vehicle you should also make sure your
headlights are clean from dirt and mud
so you can utilize the maximum amount of
light slow down increase your following
distance road
conditions how do we know if a road is
dangerous what do we look for there are
many things that contribute to making
roads more dangerous first over 90% of
wrecks happen at intersections
intersections are the most dangerous
part of Roads large intersections are
dangerous but small intersections are
dangerous as well intersection are where
people stop slow down turn and cross the
paths of other vehicles you should be
very cautious at
intersections this is not the place
where you want to be casual and
distracted turn Lanes offer a great deal
of relief from roads roads with few or
no turn lanes are more dangerous you
should also be aware of the shape of the
road such as straight flat banked Hills
and signs the surface of the road for
example concrete asphalt sand dirt
gravel oil or water you should be aware
of the shoulder of the road is there a
drop off sand or packed dirt you should
also know how to use the interstate
shoulder if you have to pull over on the
interstate you should move your vehicle
completely off the road into the grass
the shoulder is used for vehicles to
slow down and speed up if they're
re-entering the
interstate weather
conditions you will drive in many
different types of weather conditions
the most common adverse weather
condition that will occur is rain
whenever conditions are less than ideal
you should double your following
distance your car is equipped with
wipers and tires to help you deal with
the rain but you still need to drive
differently than you do when the roads
are dry and your vision is better the
first 15 minutes of rain is especially
dangerous as water mixes with sand
gravel oil and grease after 15 minutes
most of those elements are washed off
the road leaving just water you should
watch out for water that is puddled up
this can lead to hydroplaning when
hydroplaning occurs your tires are not
touching the road there's a small film
of water in between your tires and the
road you'll skid as if you're on ice
when skidding you should not press the
brake if your tires lock you cannot
steer the
vehicle driving in fog can be very
dangerous too your vision is very
limited therefore you should slow down
in heavy fog it's also hard for other
people to see you you have danger in
front of you and behind you you may want
to use your emergency flashers to draw
attention to those drivers who may be
driving too fast you may also have to
drive in the snow or ice these
conditions are the most dangerous
because you have the least amount of
traction following distance should be
tripled when braking on snow or ice you
should use light pumps on the pedal and
start braking three times sooner than
you normally would the best way to get
good traction on ice is using chains on
your tires slow down increase your following
following
distance traffic
conditions we share the road with other
people sometimes we have a few people
around us and sometimes we have hundreds
you'll need to be aware of the other
cars on the road sometimes people do
things wrong and you need to be ready to
react when that happens a good plan to
have is as follows scan the road ahead
at least 12 to 17 seconds identify
hazards early predict what others may do
and decide what you will do if execute your
your
decision traffic conditions can change
while you're driving you will drive in
city traffic secondary traffic open road
traffic Highway traffic and Interstate
traffic in the city is where most wrecks
occur this is the area where you find
the highest number of vehicles in the
city you also have to deal with more
situations you will incur 300 situations
per mile in the city you may have
multiple Lanes turn Lanes traffic lights
roads will usually be straight and wide
speeds are often 35 to 45 mph secondary
roads are designed to take some traffic
off of the main city roads these roads
may be more narrow and curves and hills
are often more sharp secondary roads
usually have fewer turn Lanes which can
congest traffic speeds may be 25 to 55
mph open road driving is like driving
out in the country many time these roads
have two lanes you will only incur 100
situations per mile speeds are often
faster than on the city and secondary
roads usually 45 to 60
MPH interstates are the safest roads to
drive on because they have no
intersections or railroad crossings they
have at least four lanes and the lanes
are always divided roads are usually
flat and straight but speeds are usually
high from 60 to 70 mph when wrecks occur
on the interstate they can be deadly
because of the high rate of speed the
faster you go the greater chance of
death when involved in a collision slow
down increase your following distance
pedestrians are considered traffic as
well people walking should walk against
traffic people riding bikes should ride
with traffic pedestrians should cross
the road at intersections and marked
crosswalks however if someone is not
Crossing in these designated areas you
still must yield to them the vehicle
always yields to The Pedestrian when you
incur someone walking or riding a bike
you should always give them plenty of
room in case they fall as you approach a
pedestrian look at the oncoming traffic
if it's clear then signal and move
safely Around The Pedestrian if there's
oncoming traffic you may need to slow
down and let the vehicles pass and then
move around The Pedestrian stay alert
around areas like schools parks and
playgrounds motorcycles are involved in
many collisions in the US 2/3 of all
collisions involving motorcycles also
involve a vehicle usually it's the
vehicle's and usually the driver did not
see the motorcycle motorcycles are
harder to see and they give the driver
little or no protection motorcycles are
entitled to the full width of the lane
and they can ride to a breast school
buses are part of the traffic we incur
on the roads school buses are carrying
our loved ones school bus laws vary
state- to State make sure you speak to
your driving instructor about the school
bus laws in your state you will always
stop when you're traveling in the same
direction as the bus and the school bus
has stopped loading or unloading
children the red lights are flashing and
the stop sign is extended you must also
stop when you're traveling in the
opposite direction with the exception of
State rules for example in many states
you do not have to stop if the road is
separated by a physical barrier you will
also incur emergency vehicles you should
always give the right of way to
emergency vehicles when an emergency
vehicle is approaching you from behind
or in front you should pull over to the
right and stop if possible never pull to
the left you should let the emergency
vehicle go left if needed never run a
stop sign or red light if an emergency
vehicle is behind you if you cannot get
out of the way then stop and let the
emergency vehicle go around you animals
make their way into the roads as well
you should be aware of your surroundings
if at all possible when you're driving
out in the country with little light
outside of the light from your vehicle
you may see deer possum rabbits foxes
even Bears when driving in areas where
there are lot of trees you may see a lot
of squirrels in neighborhoods you may
see dogs and cats no one wants to hit
animals however you should never create
a more serious Collision because of an
animal you should never hit a tree or
put your vehicle in a ditch over an
animal if the vehicle behind you is very
close and you see a squirrel don't cause
a serious Collision over the animal if
it is safe to break and avoid hitting
the animal then by all means do so no
matter how special the animal is no
animal life is as valuable as a human
life blind spots and no
zones these are areas you cannot see
with looking in your mirrors some blind
spots are bigger than others depending
on different types of vehicles the blind
spot is in the left and right lane about
where your back tire is when you change
lanes you should signal and check your
blind spot quickly if a car is in your
blind spot you should stay in your lane
you also should know when you're riding
in someone else's blind spot you never
want to do that especially in trucks
blind spots they are called No zones
because of the sides on trucks their
blind spots can be huge if you cannot
see the trucks mirrors they cannot see
you you should stay 200 ft behind and at
least 20 ft in front of
trucks the vehicle condition is your
responsibility usually our cars do not
fail us usually they're signs of
problems and the problems do not get
fixed the tires are the only part of the
car that's actually touching the road
tires are not not going to last forever
and the lifespan of your tires depend on
two things first is the quality of the
tire you purchased and the second is how
you drive your car the faster you drive
the quicker you wear down the Tires
Tires have tread on them for water you
can hydroplane with new tires if there's
enough water on the road and your speed
is too fast the more tread you have the
more water is channeled out from under
the tire to pass inspection in Most
states you can put the head of a penny
into the grooves and the rubber should
reach the top of Lincoln's head your
brakes are very important your brake
pads will not last forever either the
lifespan of brake pads is based on
quality and speed as well the faster you
drive the more often and harder you need
to press the brakes if your pad starts
to make a squeaking noise you should
have them checked your brake fluid is
vital as well this creates the pressure
needed to squeeze the pads in order to
stop your car if your fluid is too low
you notice the brake pedal going going
down more toward the floor than normal
you should have it checked
immediately your car's temperature is
regulated by air flow and water or
coolant through the cooling system if
your car begins to run hot you may want
to check the front grill and make sure
nothing is obstructing the air flow you
may also be low on coolant water works
fine but water also freezes and
expands if you always use antifreeze
coolant in your car you don't need to
worry about the coolant system in winter
but if you put into your system during
the warmer months you will need to get
the system flushed and have antifreeze
coolant put in there are many other
aspects of the vehicle such as the
battery belts transmission fluid
windshield fluid
headrests seat belts mirrors and lights
you may never have to deal with any of
these items but you will need to make
sure someone else
does I know that seems like a lot so
let's just wrap it all up with one word
safety look out for yourself and look
out for other drivers on the road I want
[Music]
driving next we're going to cover seat
belts there were 251 traffic fatalities
in Nebraska in 2023 and 70% were not
belts the seat belt law Nebraska states
that a driver and all front seat
passengers are required to ride buckled
up in a safety belt or child safety seat
back seat passengers age 18 or older are
not required to wear a seat belt if the
driver holds a provisional operator's
permit or a school permit all occupants
must wear a seat Bel regardless of how
they old they are or where they're
located in the vehicle however this is a
secondary violation I can't just pull up
next to someone and see they're not
wearing a seat Bel and stop them for
just that reason we have to have
something else like speeding uh to stop
the vehicle for before we can enforce
this law so $25 fine uh and there's no
point violations uh assessed against you
also if there are three violations
meaning three people should have had a
seat Bel on it's not $75 in fines at
that point it's still just $125 fine
even though three people were violating
reasons to wear your seat belt it keeps
your in vehicle and prevents ejection
those thrown or four times more likely
to die and 14 times more likely to
sustain a spinal injury it slows down
your body in a crash and spreads the
force over your entire body if you or
someone you known has been in a crash uh
with some decent speeds there's usually
bring across the shoulder and chest and
across the lap that's from the forces of
the crash being spread over the body
through the seat Bel instead of it being
focused into like the head hitting the
steering wheel or the body being from
effect next we're going to watch a video
works this is a seat belt usage versus
the fatality rate uh you can see as seot
usage has gone up the death rate has
gone down um so in 2020 when this was
Nebraska this is the next Quiz keyword
please record this keyword the keyword
will be used later in the quiz to verify
you watch the entire video you must get
all keywords correct on the quiz at the
end of the quiz at the end of the class
excuse me to successfully complete this course
course
Willow this diagram shows uh the
different seat belt laws across the
United States you can see New Hampshire
is the only state to not have a the
books but everywhere else does uh take
note our neighboring states of Iowa and
Kansas are both primary enforcement
meaning that you can be stopped insided
just for not wearing a seat belt they do
child Pastor restraints uh in Nebraska
children must ride rear facing up to Age
Two or until they reach the upper height
or weight limit Allowed by the car seats
manufacturer children aged seven and
younger must ride correctly secured and
Fally approved child safety seat and
must be in the back seat unless it is a
single cab pickup children ages 8 to 17
must wear a seat belt everywhere in the
vehicle and childcare providers must
transport children securely in an
appropriate safety seater seat belt a
violation of this could result and the
Nebraska this shows the uh observed
usage rate of restraints um you can see
we had a dip uh from 2020 into 2021 2022
and 2023 they're not the numbers we
would like to see but hopefully
increased education like clicket or
ticket enforcement and those sort of
things uh will help engage people to
make sure that their children are
Vehicles here's a video on a real life
story uh of Brett Wagner and Josh Rogers
[Music] usage
usage
energetic Life of the Party
um a
[Music]
was always smiling walked around here
happy all the
time yeah he was out going he wasn't
shy um not afraid to do [Music]
[Music]
anything they live life to the fullest
they didn't they weren't scared of much
I mean they swam in a lake full of
alligators I don't know almost a weekly
basis you want to Define two standup
Josh and probably that's probably you
know the last greatest memory I [Music]
had tonight a tragic end of the year for
students at Lakewood Ranch High School
in Myaka City two of their classmates
died after a crash over the weekend all
new tonight at 11: or Alison tomorrow
joins us live to explain how friends and
Sal
well started out like any other regular
Christmas uh I woke up with my family uh
we open gifts we um you know ate
cinnamon cinnamon
uh cinnamon
rolls after we opened our gifts we
cleaned up called the family members and
thanked them for the
presence Christmas Day take me through
morning did I woke Josh up and I told
him good morning I do a big Christmas
Eve for my family and a very big
and then the big
question he said I'm going to go over
Brett's and I said honey we're leaving
in the morning I'd really like you to be
home I said Christmas is for family he
said Mom bread is my
okay so he got ready to leave and he
came in the bedroom and he gave me a
hug he said I love you I said I love you
too hugged dr's neck said I love
you and as he and Lenny were walking out
the door we said y'all be careful wear
belts tell me knocked at the front door
Brett went to the front door and it was
Josh and Lenny 20 one of their friends
it had been a while since I've seen Josh
and Brett told him I was here so he
wanted to come see me and hang out with
Brett and he made it a point to wear his gator
hat and then uh the conversation about
going to Walmart came up we wanted to go
spend the gift cards that we had got for
Walmart just buy stuff uh you know I had
stuff I wanted to buy before I came back
here Brett had stuff he wanted to get
and I said listen dude you're not going
anywhere this is amateurs night out you
need to keep your heiny at home you know
Christmas so we all hopped in Josh's
truck and um
my little brother Trey tried to hop in
the truck with us but there wasn't
enough room because of Josh's uh speaker
box so I told my brother I said Trey you
know just hang out here cuz you know
Nikki was there and some other friends
were there I was like just hang out here
back and
uh you know he didn't fight me normally
my little brother I want to go I want to
go and you know he understood there
wasn't enough room which I'm so thankful for
for
and you know we're driving down 64 like
any other time it's routine
almost and Josh is driving we got the
music going and the windows down
and the next thing I hear is Brett you
know he's oh [ __ ] tonight a tragic end
of the year for students at L Ranch High
hospital the
neither of the boys was wearing their
seat belt that [Music]
night I still haven't seen the car since the
the
accident but I remember it from being [Music]
[Music]
there I don't know what the inside looked
looked
like but Gina
Josh's mom tells me that it looked like
survived and not a day goes
by that I don't try to figure out [Music]
why and I had no clue that Brett and
Josh didn't have their seat belts
on felt like we flipped maybe 15 [Music]
[Music]
down and uh I crawl out of the
and at the time before I realized the
severity of the
accident it was kind of like one of
those wo type moments you know I felt
like we were going to all laugh about
it until I look [Music]
over and my cousin's lying there face down
no more than 10 ft away from me face
down not
breathing and I look
road and Josh is face down in the middle
[Music]
street Brett Wagner just 18 years old
when he died Christmas Day at this
intersection ejected from a car when
friends say another vehicle ran a stop
sign around lunchtime the group of
friends learned Brett's best friend and
the one driving the car that night in
the hospital for days had just died too
clicking your seat belt if you would
have put the seat belt
on I got a real good feeling with be talking
talking
to probably talking to both of
them they'd be here if they had those
seat belts on and that is a very very
hard pill to
swallow just by looking at the truck um
itself you know the three boys were in
there one was wearing their seat belt
just by looking at the truck the one
that was wearing his seat belt tearing
it looks like he would not be here with
us because of the way the truck
looks I mean Josh was driving his his
whole area is perfect the back seat
perfect the passenger seat I mean it
just by looking at it you wouldn't think
they'd be here today
so I believe if they would have been
wearing their seat belts they still be
here they'd have bumps and bruises maybe
[Music]
here I had uh a gas in my hand
that had only required like four or five
stitches and a bunch of road rash and
bumps on my head
what I had was a minor something that
people can think about when they get
into their
vehicles and maybe don't want to put
their seat belt on because whether they
don't care or they don't think they're
going to drive
bad so many people have reached out to
myself drum Miss Debbie
Fred and they all seem to say the same
thing you'll have your good days and
you'll have your bad days [Music]
[Music] I
I
disagree we have bad days and we have worse
worse
days none of them are
good all of them are
bad and I know if Josh could go back and
put his seat belt on he would do it for
amazing one thing can change your life
for the rest of your life and my life
will never be the same I'll never be the
whole I mean I will never be the same
person I once
was the happiness that I had the real
true happiness that I had I never knew I
had you complain about all these stupid
little things in your life that make you
unhappy you don't know what that is
until you lose your child I mean [Music]
[Music]
then what's truly awful about it is that
you had it all the time and you never going to get it back
time and you never going to get it back again because he's never going to walk
again because he's never going to walk in this house
in this house again take the two seconds to put it on
again take the two seconds to put it on you know buckle
you know buckle up I was young I used to hate my seat
up I was young I used to hate my seat belt put it on it saved
me there comes a point in time in your life where you have to get past this
life where you have to get past this what's hip and what's cool
what's hip and what's cool phase and realize what's safe and what's
smart and the sooner you do that the sooner you could save your own life we
sooner you could save your own life we can't control other people's driving we
can't control other people's driving we can control what we do when we get into
can control what we do when we get into our vehicle to protect
our vehicle to protect ourselves that's all we can control
ourselves that's all we can control click your seat
click your seat Bel really click your seat belt it only
Bel really click your seat belt it only takes a second to do that and had
takes a second to do that and had probably those in those seconds that it
probably those in those seconds that it takes to do that will save your life
next we're going to move on to distracted driving texting takes your

is somewhere in the universe I go outside at night and sit on my balcony
outside at night and sit on my balcony when I'm really upset I stare at this
when I'm really upset I stare at this guy and whenever I'm super upset I
guy and whenever I'm super upset I always see a shooting
always see a shooting star and I like to think that that's my
star and I like to think that that's my way or my dad's way of trying to to
way or my dad's way of trying to to communicate with me I felt that my dad
communicate with me I felt that my dad would not have wanted me to be mad at
would not have wanted me to be mad at him for the rest of my life and that I
him for the rest of my life and that I knew my dad had forgiven him I knew that
knew my dad had forgiven him I knew that and that he would want me to try and
and that he would want me to try and move on and forgive him and even get to
move on and forgive him and even get to know
him forgiveness is that's something that I see for
is that's something that I see for Megan I see that for forgiveness I feel
Megan I see that for forgiveness I feel it I'm grateful for
it I'm grateful for it I reached out to Reggie to tell him
it I reached out to Reggie to tell him you know I forgive you my dad forgave
you know I forgive you my dad forgave [Music]
[Music] you I want to help you through your you
you I want to help you through your you know trying to make a difference in this
know trying to make a difference in this whole thing
I was once told that to be a good member of society you have to give back more
of society you have to give back more than you take I can never give back
than you take I can never give back those two men's lives
those two men's lives [Music]
ever I would just like to say um for anybody out there who has a cell
for anybody out there who has a cell phone um focus while you're driving pay
phone um focus while you're driving pay attention while you're driving don't
attention while you're driving don't take your eyes off the road while you're
take your eyes off the road while you're driving things can happen so quick that
driving things can happen so quick that it'll change your life
it'll change your life [Music]
[Music] forever I will say it over and over and
forever I will say it over and over and over again don't text and
over again don't text and drive that it can't
drive that it can't wait I would tell America to please
wait I would tell America to please don't text and
don't text and drive how many other people are going to
drive how many other people are going to have to be
have to be killed how many other people are going
killed how many other people are going to be left like my sister
Debbie it's just nuts it's crazy you know I don't know why people don't want
know I don't know why people don't want to talk to each other anyway
next we're going to move on to motor vehicle crashes seat belts airbags and
vehicle crashes seat belts airbags and TR restraints equal the best chance of
TR restraints equal the best chance of survival in a crash an accident or a
survival in a crash an accident or a crash in Nebraska is an unstable
crash in Nebraska is an unstable situation not under human control
situation not under human control involving a motor vehicle in transport
involving a motor vehicle in transport on a traffic way that results in death
on a traffic way that results in death injury or damage of at least $1,000
injury or damage of at least $1,000 crash reports are not taken if there is
crash reports are not taken if there is deliberate intent such as vandalism
deliberate intent such as vandalism legal intervention police uh hitting a
legal intervention police uh hitting a car intentionally to protect them from
car intentionally to protect them from injury or death such as a vehicle
injury or death such as a vehicle pursuit of a criminal or an act of
pursuit of a criminal or an act of weather such as hail or
weather such as hail or floods if you are involved in a crash
floods if you are involved in a crash you should stop all vehicles and do not
you should stop all vehicles and do not leave the scene it is a felony to leave
leave the scene it is a felony to leave the scene of any injury crash it's a
the scene of any injury crash it's a misdemeanor if it's just the vehicles or
misdemeanor if it's just the vehicles or property that's damaged assist any
property that's damaged assist any injured parties uh you must render
injured parties uh you must render reasonable Aid and or call 9911 for
reasonable Aid and or call 9911 for further assistance obviously calling 911
further assistance obviously calling 911 is the best situation to get trained
is the best situation to get trained personnel there to
personnel there to assist you must exchange information
assist you must exchange information with all drivers which is required by
with all drivers which is required by law if you've already contacted law
law if you've already contacted law enforcement feel free to wait until we
enforcement feel free to wait until we get there to facilitate the information
get there to facilitate the information exchange to ensure everyone's
exchange to ensure everyone's information is neatly secured we
information is neatly secured we understand that uh during these crashes
understand that uh during these crashes it can be a very stressful situation and
it can be a very stressful situation and um you may forget to get certain things
um you may forget to get certain things or uh people might be angered by the
or uh people might be angered by the fact that they were involved in a crash
fact that they were involved in a crash or might be blaming one person or the
or might be blaming one person or the other um so um we need to uh make sure
other um so um we need to uh make sure that everyone is safe during those
that everyone is safe during those encounters and we can certainly help
encounters and we can certainly help facilitate those uh types of
exchanges in Nebraska during 2020 again when those most recent stats were
when those most recent stats were released uh there was one motor vehicle
released uh there was one motor vehicle crash every 18 minutes 39 people injured
crash every 18 minutes 39 people injured each day and one person killed every 38
each day and one person killed every 38 hours
also from 2020 there were 19354 property damage crashes 9,847
19354 property damage crashes 9,847 injury crashes with 14,100 people
injury crashes with 14,100 people injured and 217 fatal crashes with 233
injured and 217 fatal crashes with 233 total fatalities for a grand total of
total fatalities for a grand total of 29,41 18 total crashes again I know
29,41 18 total crashes again I know these statistics are a few years old um
these statistics are a few years old um but Nebraska has not seen a real
but Nebraska has not seen a real downturn in crashes and these statistics
downturn in crashes and these statistics are um Under reporting what is occurring
are um Under reporting what is occurring now um we attempt to make efforts in
now um we attempt to make efforts in curbing these types of incidents however
curbing these types of incidents however um Nebraska is a growing state sarie
um Nebraska is a growing state sarie county especially is the fastest growing
county especially is the fastest growing County um and we have had our fair share
County um and we have had our fair share of crashes and tragedies that do not
of crashes and tragedies that do not seem to be going down based on our
growth airbags are the supplemental restraint system that's what SRS stands
restraint system that's what SRS stands for when you see that uh imprinted on
for when you see that uh imprinted on your dashboard or in your uh pillars of
your dashboard or in your uh pillars of your
your vehicle SE belts keep you in your seat
vehicle SE belts keep you in your seat um while airbags prevent you from
um while airbags prevent you from striking the dash or other parts of the
striking the dash or other parts of the vehicle airbags do not replace seat bels
vehicle airbags do not replace seat bels and if they're not used in conjunction
and if they're not used in conjunction with a seat Bel they may cause more
with a seat Bel they may cause more injury than they
prevent uh this next video we'll show you how airbags work and how they uh use
you how airbags work and how they uh use their technology and physics to help
their technology and physics to help lessen injuries to
occupants normally something blowing up in your face is definitely bad but right
in your face is definitely bad but right about now this chemical reaction could
about now this chemical reaction could very well save your
life it takes 50 milliseconds for you to hit the steering wheel in a crash
hit the steering wheel in a crash everything we're about to tell you goes
everything we're about to tell you goes down even faster your car has to be able
down even faster your car has to be able to detect when a potentially deadly
to detect when a potentially deadly crash is happening you don't want your
crash is happening you don't want your airbag deploying every time you hit a
airbag deploying every time you hit a pothole or getting a fender bender your
pothole or getting a fender bender your car has an accelerometer several
car has an accelerometer several actually in case one fails or goes off
actually in case one fails or goes off by mistake the detect sudden rapid
by mistake the detect sudden rapid changes in velocity in one model a ball
changes in velocity in one model a ball bearing is normally held in place by a
bearing is normally held in place by a magnet but in a crash it comes flying
magnet but in a crash it comes flying free and it flies right into an
free and it flies right into an electrical circuit that tells the car's
electrical circuit that tells the car's computer to deploy the
computer to deploy the airbags airbags don't just fill with gas
airbags airbags don't just fill with gas like a balloon blowing up that would be
like a balloon blowing up that would be way too slow the gas that fills airbags
way too slow the gas that fills airbags is actually produced by a chemical
is actually produced by a chemical reaction the classic example is sodium
reaction the classic example is sodium aide which is stable until it's heated
aide which is stable until it's heated in a crash a small explosive or heating
in a crash a small explosive or heating element called a squib goes off and
element called a squib goes off and ignites the sodium aide which decomposes
ignites the sodium aide which decomposes quickly to nitrogen gas and sodium metal
quickly to nitrogen gas and sodium metal that sodium metal could react with water
that sodium metal could react with water in the air to produce corrosive sodium
in the air to produce corrosive sodium hydroxide so airbag manufacturers
hydroxide so airbag manufacturers include some other compounds to react it
include some other compounds to react it into sodium oxide and alkaline silicate
into sodium oxide and alkaline silicate instead by the way the technology we
instead by the way the technology we described is a little old school
described is a little old school nowadays most frontal airbags are
nowadays most frontal airbags are actually inflated with guanine nitrate
actually inflated with guanine nitrate but it works on the same Principle as
but it works on the same Principle as sodium aide you're creating a lot of nen
sodium aide you're creating a lot of nen gas and accelerometers have changed with
gas and accelerometers have changed with the times too they're a little more
the times too they're a little more sophisticated than the ball bearing
sophisticated than the ball bearing thing meanwhile the nitrogen gas is
thing meanwhile the nitrogen gas is totally harmless being the main
totally harmless being the main ingredient in you know air just a small
ingredient in you know air just a small handful of sodium aide can produce 67 L
handful of sodium aide can produce 67 L of nitrogen and that volume of gas
of nitrogen and that volume of gas creates enough pressure to fill the
creates enough pressure to fill the airbag in less than 40
airbag in less than 40 milliseconds so quick first law
milliseconds so quick first law refresher an object in motion stays in
refresher an object in motion stays in motion so when your car hits something
motion so when your car hits something it stops but your body keeps moving
it stops but your body keeps moving forward and if it keeps moving forward
forward and if it keeps moving forward right into the steering wheel or
right into the steering wheel or dashboard that's bad news for you so the
dashboard that's bad news for you so the airbag is there to slow you down more
airbag is there to slow you down more gradually than a steering wheel
gradually than a steering wheel would but this rapidly inflating cushion
would but this rapidly inflating cushion isn't actually pillowy soft the front
isn't actually pillowy soft the front face of the airbag moves towards you at
face of the airbag moves towards you at between 150 and 250
between 150 and 250 mph and if you were to hit it while it
mph and if you were to hit it while it was still inflating that might be almost
was still inflating that might be almost as bad as hitting the steering wheel to
as bad as hitting the steering wheel to properly slow you down and airbag has to
properly slow you down and airbag has to have blown up already when you hit it so
have blown up already when you hit it so that means the accelerometer detects the
that means the accelerometer detects the crash the squib ignites the sodium aide
crash the squib ignites the sodium aide the nitrogen gas is produced and in 50
the nitrogen gas is produced and in 50 milliseconds it's already blown up in
milliseconds it's already blown up in your face and started to wind down
your face and started to wind down between 1987 and 2015 frontal airbag
between 1987 and 2015 frontal airbag saved

Tesla airbag control modules or the ACM uh it is a module within the vehicle
uh it is a module within the vehicle that runs Diagnostics and measures crash
that runs Diagnostics and measures crash severity it uses accelerometers sensors
severity it uses accelerometers sensors and other items to determine if the
and other items to determine if the vehicle is experiencing an extreme
vehicle is experiencing an extreme change in velocity uh or an impact based
change in velocity uh or an impact based upon the preset programming the ACM will
upon the preset programming the ACM will determine whether to deploy the airbags
determine whether to deploy the airbags when the ACM has time has to process the
when the ACM has time has to process the data for a crash or near crash event it
data for a crash or near crash event it will record information in an event data
will record information in an event data recorder it is continuously recording
recorder it is continuously recording and locks pre- crash data when the
and locks pre- crash data when the airbag control module indicates
airbag control module indicates something happened or almost happened to
something happened or almost happened to the vehicle it will record things like
the vehicle it will record things like vehicle speed brake application throttle
vehicle speed brake application throttle position seat belt status changes in
position seat belt status changes in velocity uh and other items every
velocity uh and other items every vehicle make and model is different and
vehicle make and model is different and uh usually the newer the vehicles the
uh usually the newer the vehicles the more data it will
more data it will show this are some excerpts slides from
show this are some excerpts slides from an airbag control module report uh you
an airbag control module report uh you can see in this particular crash uh the
can see in this particular crash uh the uh vehicle uh ex uh it had a 60.9 mph
uh vehicle uh ex uh it had a 60.9 mph maximum Delta V longitudinal uh it's a
maximum Delta V longitudinal uh it's a bunch of nerds speak um for about the
bunch of nerds speak um for about the amount of forces that this vehicle
amount of forces that this vehicle sustained the negative just indicates
sustained the negative just indicates Direction um I know based on my training
Direction um I know based on my training and experience that that means that the
and experience that that means that the uh forces sustained by this vehicle um
uh forces sustained by this vehicle um were from the front to the rear and uh a
were from the front to the rear and uh a 30 m per hour changing velocity is
30 m per hour changing velocity is something that will result in serious
something that will result in serious injuries or death and this vehicle uh
injuries or death and this vehicle uh sustained double that amount of
force this also shows um the seat belt status of the driver was unbuckled in
status of the driver was unbuckled in this particular crash uh so was the
this particular crash uh so was the passenger but there was no one in the
passenger but there was no one in the passenger seat so we would suspect that
passenger seat so we would suspect that and then all these things called tell
and then all these things called tell Tails were the uh warning lights on the
Tails were the uh warning lights on the dashboard so it's saying that all of
dashboard so it's saying that all of those were off at this
those were off at this time and then uh this talks about speed
time and then uh this talks about speed uh and the accelerator pedal how far it
uh and the accelerator pedal how far it was pushed engine RPM service break
was pushed engine RPM service break that's just the brake pedal whether it
that's just the brake pedal whether it was on or off and you can see in this
was on or off and you can see in this particular crash it's recording every
particular crash it's recording every half second data up till ne5 to zero
half second data up till ne5 to zero that means 5 Seconds prior to the impact
that means 5 Seconds prior to the impact and zero is near impact so that you can
and zero is near impact so that you can see this vehicle impacted at about 75 a
see this vehicle impacted at about 75 a half miles per
hour and this talks about uh steering wheel
wheel angle
angle so negative means to the left and
so negative means to the left and positive means to the right you can see
positive means to the right you can see where this uh vehicle was going
where this uh vehicle was going generally straight up until the last few
generally straight up until the last few ten of a second before impact and there
ten of a second before impact and there was a big deviation from 8.6 degrees at
was a big deviation from 8.6 degrees at 1.2 seconds prior to impact to 106.7
1.2 seconds prior to impact to 106.7 degrees at2 seconds before
impact vehicle insurance in Nebraska you have to have minimum liability coverages
have to have minimum liability coverages meaning your car insurance policy must
meaning your car insurance policy must meet at least the following liability
meet at least the following liability coverages 25,000 for bodily injury per
coverages 25,000 for bodily injury per person 50,000 for total bodily injury if
person 50,000 for total bodily injury if multiple people are hurt and 25,000 for
multiple people are hurt and 25,000 for property damage
property damage vehicles with leans or alone must have
vehicles with leans or alone must have full coverage uh in Crash investigations
full coverage uh in Crash investigations law enforcement determines law
law enforcement determines law violations not fault in the crash while
violations not fault in the crash while law violations may play a role in
law violations may play a role in determining quote fault end quote it is
determining quote fault end quote it is a civil matter among insurance companies
a civil matter among insurance companies and vehicle owners to rule who is at
and vehicle owners to rule who is at fault so um sometimes even police
fault so um sometimes even police officers can sometimes say you're at
officers can sometimes say you're at fault in a crash but if we're talking
fault in a crash but if we're talking technically we don't determine fault we
technically we don't determine fault we just determine law violations and it's
just determine law violations and it's up to those in the insurance realm and
up to those in the insurance realm and even uh going all the way up through the
even uh going all the way up through the court system maybe a judge or a jury
court system maybe a judge or a jury might be determining fault but police
might be determining fault but police officers just determine if law
officers just determine if law violations occurred and if there's
violations occurred and if there's enough proof or evidence to support
enough proof or evidence to support issuing citations for
that all right next we're going to move on to impaired driving uh impaired
on to impaired driving uh impaired driving is one of the largest
driving is one of the largest contributing factors in Nebraska
contributing factors in Nebraska Crashers resulting in death and serious
Crashers resulting in death and serious bodily
injury we're going to watch a video on impaired driving
impact if you're driving impaired we will find you we will pull you
will find you we will pull you over we'll conduct a field sobriety
test you will be given a breath test then we'll arrest you and take you
test then we'll arrest you and take you to jail and we will vigorously prosecute
to jail and we will vigorously prosecute you impaired driving is a dead end
you impaired driving is a dead end impaired driving is definitely a dead
impaired driving is definitely a dead end dead end this is a complete dead end
end dead end this is a complete dead end impaired driving is a dead end
impaired driving is a dead end [Music]

DUI uh well it just was a a careless night of drinking actually drinking went
night of drinking actually drinking went to the bar I just got done
to the bar I just got done drinking and of course he was driving on
drinking and of course he was driving on the back roads and while still on the D
the back roads and while still on the D road and it was time to go home so we
road and it was time to go home so we got in the car I jumped in the driver's
got in the car I jumped in the driver's seat drinking you know you don't exactly
seat drinking you know you don't exactly pay attention to reason and I drove home
pay attention to reason and I drove home bars closed driving home foolishly tried
bars closed driving home foolishly tried to uh get in a car and drive it when I
to uh get in a car and drive it when I had no business trying to drive in every
had no business trying to drive in every D I went through the sign instead of
D I went through the sign instead of stopping completely and on my my way to
stopping completely and on my my way to the house I was making the final turn
the house I was making the final turn into my home
into my home and cop pulled us over block and a half
and cop pulled us over block and a half away from home so he flipped on his
away from home so he flipped on his lights turned around and called me the
lights turned around and called me the police attempted to pull me over um I
police attempted to pull me over um I was under the influence I decided to run
was under the influence I decided to run got in a high-speed chase I was
got in a high-speed chase I was literally a block away from my house and
literally a block away from my house and got pulled over Got Away parked the
got pulled over Got Away parked the vehicle and they they found where I was
vehicle and they they found where I was arrested me and as I sat in the back of
arrested me and as I sat in the back of the cop car when I came to to trying to
the cop car when I came to to trying to figure out what happened uh I saw my car
figure out what happened uh I saw my car over there upside down it was it didn't
over there upside down it was it didn't even register that it was my car pissed
even register that it was my car pissed off upset and crying in handcuffs put me
off upset and crying in handcuffs put me in handcuffs and I resisted and I was
in handcuffs and I resisted and I was thrown to the ground just asked me the
thrown to the ground just asked me the normal questions and gave me the feel of
normal questions and gave me the feel of sobriety and cops put me in handcuffs
sobriety and cops put me in handcuffs stuck me in the back of a patrol car and
stuck me in the back of a patrol car and there just they don't have very much
there just they don't have very much room back there the cops put me in
room back there the cops put me in handcuffs and put me in back their
handcuffs and put me in back their patrol car he put me in handcuffs I was
patrol car he put me in handcuffs I was still trying to figure out what was
still trying to figure out what was going on watching a tow trck take your
going on watching a tow trck take your vehicle and thinking it's never coming
vehicle and thinking it's never coming back and how much money is going by then
back and how much money is going by then I was charged with resisting arrest and
I was charged with resisting arrest and they threw me in the back of the cop car
they threw me in the back of the cop car and took me to jail placed me in the
and took me to jail placed me in the handcuffs um started to walk me back to
handcuffs um started to walk me back to his car and Read Me My Rights and Sab me
his car and Read Me My Rights and Sab me into the back of his car put me in the
into the back of his car put me in the car and I was sitting there wai waiting
car and I was sitting there wai waiting for him to get in while he cleared the
for him to get in while he cleared the scene of course I went to jail and
scene of course I went to jail and that's when it hit me that
that's when it hit me that uh my car was total for a DUI cuz I
uh my car was total for a DUI cuz I failed the breathalyzer the cops took me
failed the breathalyzer the cops took me out of my car did a field sobriety test
out of my car did a field sobriety test brought me to jail and I was sitting in
brought me to jail and I was sitting in there for 40 days and uh got my DUI
then ah the consequence is first of all I found myself in jail pretty bad you
I found myself in jail pretty bad you know when you wake up in jail and you
know when you wake up in jail and you don't know what you did and you find out
don't know what you did and you find out what you did when you went to court uh I
what you did when you went to court uh I spent a 3 days in jail and had to
spent a 3 days in jail and had to do uh treatment program having my family
do uh treatment program having my family come forward with all the money to post
come forward with all the money to post bail was um a very shaming experience
bail was um a very shaming experience whenever posted bail my family all
whenever posted bail my family all always said you know you make your own
always said you know you make your own bed you sleep in it I had to have one of
bed you sleep in it I had to have one of my friends post my bail I had to call my
my friends post my bail I had to call my parents and tell them that I was in jail
parents and tell them that I was in jail and I needed them to post bail and at
and I needed them to post bail and at the time it was 3:00 in the morning and
the time it was 3:00 in the morning and there was really no place to get money
there was really no place to get money so they had to go and borrow it from a
so they had to go and borrow it from a friend which embarrassed them as well
friend which embarrassed them as well and people I could get a hold of uh they
and people I could get a hold of uh they didn't have the money to post me
didn't have the money to post me out so I had to spend all my time in
out so I had to spend all my time in jail when I was in the jail
jail when I was in the jail cell that I was sitting there
cell that I was sitting there thinking I really don't want to call my
thinking I really don't want to call my parents
parents it's not just yourself you have to worry
it's not just yourself you have to worry about you have to think of everybody
about you have to think of everybody involved I had to sit in a jail cell
involved I had to sit in a jail cell when I couldn't be with my
when I couldn't be with my family I've uh lost a lot of respect
family I've uh lost a lot of respect from family members um I've lost a
from family members um I've lost a relationship with my son my
relationship with my son my four-year-old son um you don't just hurt
four-year-old son um you don't just hurt yourself you hurt your family as well my
yourself you hurt your family as well my son into you know what I mean because
son into you know what I mean because that is what has affected me the most I
that is what has affected me the most I was driving my mom's car and my mom's
was driving my mom's car and my mom's car was founded and she had to pay to
car was founded and she had to pay to get it out there's a lot more to just
get it out there's a lot more to just drinking and driving it's not just that
drinking and driving it's not just that act it's you hurt a lot of
people it hurt my family not just me it is tough it's hard on my family it's
is tough it's hard on my family it's hard on my it was hard on my
hard on my it was hard on my kids it's hard on my girlfriend your
kids it's hard on my girlfriend your brothers sisters your significant other
brothers sisters your significant other your kids and those are the important
your kids and those are the important things in life impaired driving is
things in life impaired driving is absolutely devastating it destroys
absolutely devastating it destroys families and and uh
families and and uh communities it touches everybody's lives
communities it touches everybody's lives at one point or another you know there's
at one point or another you know there's always cops out there there's always
always cops out there there's always going to be cops my name is Officer
going to be cops my name is Officer Steve Dunn I work for the Anchorage
Steve Dunn I work for the Anchorage Police Department I'm currently assigned
Police Department I'm currently assigned to the Traffic Unit and I've been with

up and being told I wasn't able to walk bike run any of that anymore and I
bike run any of that anymore and I really had no idea why just kind of a
really had no idea why just kind of a shock being told you can't walk and you

just like a childhood memory of like jumping on the trampoline with my
jumping on the trampoline with my friends or something like that it just
friends or something like that it just kind of comes back in little fragments I
kind of comes back in little fragments I tell people from the movie 51st dates
tell people from the movie 51st dates how every day she had to be told who she
how every day she had to be told who she was I had to do that about 50 times a
was I had to do that about 50 times a day um I was told to tell him when he
day um I was told to tell him when he woke up what his name was where he was
woke up what his name was where he was how old he was and that he was hit by a
how old he was and that he was hit by a drunk
drunk driver for the first approximately 4
driver for the first approximately 4 days it was the hardest because he did
days it was the hardest because he did not know who I was um I remember asking
not know who I was um I remember asking him who his mom was and he said some
him who his mom was and he said some crazy lady which I chuckled and then I
crazy lady which I chuckled and then I looked at him and I said could I be her
looked at him and I said could I be her and he looked at me straight in the face
and he looked at me straight in the face and he said no and I would say that was
and he said no and I would say that was about the hardest moment I had to
about the hardest moment I had to relearn literally everything what it
relearn literally everything what it felt like to eat I was feeding him going
felt like to eat I was feeding him going to the bathroom take a bath you name it
to the bathroom take a bath you name it blue green black and then dog he could
blue green black and then dog he could have tell you which one did not belong
have tell you which one did not belong in that category it was it was extremely
in that category it was it was extremely challenging um I I knew that before the
challenging um I I knew that before the car wreck I had been able to do all of
car wreck I had been able to do all of that and I'd known what everything felt
that and I'd known what everything felt like but after the car
like but after the car wreck I forgot it and it was It was kind
wreck I forgot it and it was It was kind of frustrating really like I knew I knew
of frustrating really like I knew I knew how to do it but couldn't couldn't grab
how to do it but couldn't couldn't grab hold of it I basically had a
hold of it I basically had a toddler uh for probably took about 2
toddler uh for probably took about 2 years until I was really back up to
years until I was really back up to where I was before the car wreck um I
where I was before the car wreck um I know physical physically my son had
know physical physically my son had dreams of joining the service he could
dreams of joining the service he could no longer
no longer join um because of the the two rods in
join um because of the the two rods in his leg mainly because of the head
his leg mainly because of the head trauma I I know it affected her I'd say
trauma I I know it affected her I'd say almost as much as me just she was just
almost as much as me just she was just about as heartbroken as I was having to
about as heartbroken as I was having to uh be back at my side basically I was
uh be back at my side basically I was back in diapers again I don't know how
back in diapers again I don't know how to explain to somebody and he hates when
to explain to somebody and he hates when I say this but when he left that morning
I say this but when he left that morning I made sure that I said you know goodbye
I made sure that I said you know goodbye to my son and kiss him and have a good
to my son and kiss him and have a good day and I know he's alive and I have him
day and I know he's alive and I have him but he's not the same child that I said
but he's not the same child that I said goodbye to that morning uh I was 16 when
goodbye to that morning uh I was 16 when the car wreck happened um end of junior
the car wreck happened um end of junior year we've been getting reacquainted the
year we've been getting reacquainted the last 4 years impaired driving is the
last 4 years impaired driving is the most selfish thing I think a person can
most selfish thing I think a person can do it's like you said doesn't cost much
do it's like you said doesn't cost much to take a cap it wasn't an accident
to take a cap it wasn't an accident that that somebody came
that that somebody came home and changed our lives
home and changed our lives forever
forever it it's so frustrating to have something taken from you and you
something taken from you and you really had no say in it at all he tells
really had no say in it at all he tells me that it was him that was
me that it was him that was injured I may have not been physically
injured I may have not been physically injured um I was emotionally
injured um I was emotionally injured
injured um I look at my son now I can see the
um I look at my son now I can see the scars I can see when he limps I know
scars I can see when he limps I know that his left foot still doesn't have
that his left foot still doesn't have complete feeling in
complete feeling in it
it um he's
um he's he's not the same child he's he's got
he's not the same child he's he's got more of a temper it's not that hard to
more of a temper it's not that hard to call a cab or call a bu to pick you up
call a cab or call a bu to pick you up it's definitely not worth it I have no
it's definitely not worth it I have no sympathy for anybody who gets a DUI none
sympathy for anybody who gets a DUI none whatsoever I don't think they get enough
whatsoever I don't think they get enough punishment and it's totally not worth
punishment and it's totally not worth all the fines and trouble you have to go
all the fines and trouble you have to go through getting a DUI it will get you
through getting a DUI it will get you nowhere and definitely not fair to the
nowhere and definitely not fair to the other person either

doesn't clear up to turn left I'm just going to turn right we're going to go
going to turn right we're going to go the long way home well traffic ended up
the long way home well traffic ended up clearing and we ended up turning left
clearing and we ended up turning left the next morning I got up I was getting
the next morning I got up I was getting ready for
ready for work and
work and um I got a knock at the door but I
um I got a knock at the door but I remember waking up to someone banging on
remember waking up to someone banging on the door and
the door and um thinking what did they forget their
um thinking what did they forget their key and it was a police officer I looked
key and it was a police officer I looked outside and saw the cop car and I
outside and saw the cop car and I thought oh my gosh what did I do I asked
thought oh my gosh what did I do I asked him if this was about my girls and he
him if this was about my girls and he said yes and I thought okay I can handle
said yes and I thought okay I can handle this and I invited him in and they told
this and I invited him in and they told me through the door to put the dog away
me through the door to put the dog away cuz um they had a dog named Riot and um
cuz um they had a dog named Riot and um so I put him away and they um I let him
so I put him away and they um I let him in and and uh he asked me to put my 110
in and and uh he asked me to put my 110 lb dog away and I did and I still wasn't
lb dog away and I did and I still wasn't getting it and then he asked me to sit
getting it and then he asked me to sit down at the table and I did I don't I
down at the table and I did I don't I can't I can't tell you what happened I
can't I can't tell you what happened I don't really remember he proceeded to
don't really remember he proceeded to tell me that there was a terrible crash
tell me that there was a terrible crash and that my daughter Corey along with
and that my daughter Corey along with another young woman had been killed and
another young woman had been killed and the driver Allison was in critical
the driver Allison was in critical condition and she was at the hospital I
condition and she was at the hospital I just remember feeling like somebody had
just remember feeling like somebody had kicked me in the stomach so hard I ended
kicked me in the stomach so hard I ended up on my knees in front of my kitchen
up on my knees in front of my kitchen sink and I held my head my head hurt so
sink and I held my head my head hurt so bad that day I lost so
bad that day I lost so much I lost my
much I lost my sister I lost my best friend I lost my
sister I lost my best friend I lost my mentor I lost ever being an
aunt I remember looking up at him and saying oh my God I I can't believe it my
saying oh my God I I can't believe it my life is
life is over and yet my I was still breathing I
over and yet my I was still breathing I was shocked that I was still breathing
was shocked that I was still breathing and my heart was still beating I lost
and my heart was still beating I lost the fact that she would be there
the fact that she would be there standing next to me at my own
standing next to me at my own wedding the person that answered that
wedding the person that answered that door is not the same person that got up
door is not the same person that got up off that floor I lost the fact that she
off that floor I lost the fact that she would hold her nieces in her arms
would hold her nieces in her arms and
and that she would be able to look at me and
that she would be able to look at me and say Sally I'm so proud of what you've
say Sally I'm so proud of what you've done I was going to bury a
done I was going to bury a child I remember being in the hospital
child I remember being in the hospital and I can remember the netting that was
and I can remember the netting that was all over my face the windshield coming
all over my face the windshield coming into the car at us the rear your mirror
into the car at us the rear your mirror came down and it fractured my cheekbone
came down and it fractured my cheekbone so I had gauze on my face to to cover
so I had gauze on my face to to cover the um surgery that the surgeon had done
the um surgery that the surgeon had done and I can remember them coming in and
and I can remember them coming in and cutting that Gau off my face I want to
cutting that Gau off my face I want to say it was the next day that my dad told
say it was the next day that my dad told me what had happened it was very
me what had happened it was very difficult for me to realize that she was
difficult for me to realize that she was gone I can honestly say I've never been
gone I can honestly say I've never been the same
the same since and I still have problems sleeping
since and I still have problems sleeping yeah there was a lot taken from
yeah there was a lot taken from me and I I don't think I could ever
me and I I don't think I could ever truly describe or be able to
measure what may have been I I just can't do it it's next to
can't do it it's next to impossible to measure that
impossible to measure that loss I try not to be selfish and think
loss I try not to be selfish and think about what was taken away from me
about what was taken away from me because I'm still here I still get to
because I'm still here I still get to live my life I get to have a husband
live my life I get to have a husband have a family and she didn't
have a family and she didn't years later I
years later I met one of the two
met one of the two officers that responded that actually
officers that responded that actually removed my daughter a few years after
removed my daughter a few years after that I met the other officer and that
that I met the other officer and that other officer told me that it was
other officer told me that it was actually his
actually his birthday that night and he told me or
birthday that night and he told me or that morning and he told me that there
that morning and he told me that there was not one morning one birthday rather
was not one morning one birthday rather they didn't go by that he didn't think
they didn't go by that he didn't think think of my daughter everyone that shows
think of my daughter everyone that shows up it affects them in some way and those
up it affects them in some way and those people that pick up that
people that pick up that newspaper and they search that article
newspaper and they search that article as quickly as they can because they want
as quickly as they can because they want to know if it's somebody they know or
to know if it's somebody they know or they turn on the TV and they they sit
they turn on the TV and they they sit there and have to
there and have to listen it's a domino effect and so it
listen it's a domino effect and so it just doesn't affect that one person it
just doesn't affect that one person it affects several lives and it it
affects several lives and it it matters and the sad thing is is that I
matters and the sad thing is is that I didn't even have a choice in the
didn't even have a choice in the situation she didn't even have a choice
situation she didn't even have a choice in the
in the situation and that's the hardest part
situation and that's the hardest part for me he really wasn't what what we
for me he really wasn't what what we think of as a drunk driver from
think of as a drunk driver from everything that I've read I've never met
everything that I've read I've never met him I've never spoken to him but from
him I've never spoken to him but from everything that I've read and heard he
everything that I've read and heard he was just over the limit by Blood and
was just over the limit by Blood and breath alcohol content um so he isn't
breath alcohol content um so he isn't the classical stumbling around drunk but
the classical stumbling around drunk but he was impaired so my idea of impaired
he was impaired so my idea of impaired driving is not just somebody who's
driving is not just somebody who's falling down drunk but somebody who has
falling down drunk but somebody who has been
been drinking and whether it's socially or in
drinking and whether it's socially or in abundance and then they tried to drive
abundance and then they tried to drive somewhere because just a little bit of
somewhere because just a little bit of alcohol can impair your driving can make
alcohol can impair your driving can make it so that that you don't have those
it so that that you don't have those quick
quick reflexes that you should if you were so
reflexes that you should if you were so completely sober the more alcohol you
completely sober the more alcohol you have your
have your system the your ability to concentrate
system the your ability to concentrate your ability to uh react to hazards that
your ability to uh react to hazards that might come out uh come about are are
might come out uh come about are are greatly affected uh your reaction time
greatly affected uh your reaction time has slowed before you even have that
has slowed before you even have that first drink you you need a plan what I
first drink you you need a plan what I like to say about impaired
like to say about impaired driving that it's stupid and there's so
driving that it's stupid and there's so many other options and you need to
many other options and you need to think before you get into a car and is
think before you get into a car and is is this really worth it and it's just
is this really worth it and it's just not is it worth it for you it's the fact
not is it worth it for you it's the fact that you're putting other people's lives
that you're putting other people's lives in Jeopardy drinking and driving is
in Jeopardy drinking and driving is really not worth it just if you're going
really not worth it just if you're going to drink either have a ride set up
to drink either have a ride set up already or pay the 20 bucks for a cab
already or pay the 20 bucks for a cab you don't know I mean the car you hit
you don't know I mean the car you hit could be your own sister or your own
could be your own sister or your own brother or your own mother or father
brother or your own mother or father aunt or best friend and is it really
aunt or best friend and is it really worth it that would be my question
worth it that would be my question getting behind the wheel after you've
getting behind the wheel after you've been drinking is just not worth it there
been drinking is just not worth it there are options I mean you can call a cab
are options I mean you can call a cab you can drink at home you can stay
you can drink at home you can stay wherever it is you are drinking if
wherever it is you are drinking if you're with a friend or have a
you're with a friend or have a designated driver it's inconceivable
designated driver it's inconceivable that because we don't want to leave our
that because we don't want to leave our car someplace or uh we feel that we can
car someplace or uh we feel that we can make it home
make it home uh that we would put ourselves and other
uh that we would put ourselves and other people to that kind of risk is someone's
people to that kind of risk is someone's life really worth $20 when you just
life really worth $20 when you just spent God knows how much on booze is is
spent God knows how much on booze is is it really worth it you know it's not
it really worth it you know it's not really even worth it to get behind that
really even worth it to get behind that wheel if you've had one drink because
wheel if you've had one drink because it's going to change your reaction time
it's going to change your reaction time and cuz I know my sister's life was
and cuz I know my sister's life was worth more than
worth more than $20 I just beg and plead please please
$20 I just beg and plead please please think about it before you leave the
think about it before you leave the house I just wish people would stop it I
house I just wish people would stop it I wish people would listen to the
wish people would listen to the seriousness of of what is happening it's
seriousness of of what is happening it's not a joke would I still have everything
not a joke would I still have everything I should have had if he wouldn't have
I should have had if he wouldn't have made that
made that choice it ruins so many
choice it ruins so many lives so many
lives so many lives my daughter's death certificate
lives my daughter's death certificate says she was murdered
says she was murdered he just used a big truck to do it please
he just used a big truck to do it please please please learn from our mistakes
please please learn from our mistakes and don't make the same take that time
and don't make the same take that time before you're getting ready to pick up
before you're getting ready to pick up the keys and drive take that that Split
the keys and drive take that that Split Second to think maybe I really shouldn't
Second to think maybe I really shouldn't drive and put your keys down give them
drive and put your keys down give them to a friend hide them throw them before
to a friend hide them throw them before you go out do whatever you need to do
you go out do whatever you need to do just don't drink and drive even 15 years
just don't drink and drive even 15 years later I still there's a piece of my my
later I still there's a piece of my my heart that will always be gone you know
heart that will always be gone you know I I kind of had to learn a hard way but
I I kind of had to learn a hard way but maybe by watching this video somebody
maybe by watching this video somebody out there might not have to learn the
out there might not have to learn the hard way maybe the message will get
hard way maybe the message will get through don't don't drink and drive it's
through don't don't drink and drive it's it's a bad idea
impaired driving is is a dead end impaired driving is a dead
impaired driving is a dead end impaired driving is a dead end yeah
end impaired driving is a dead end yeah impaired driving is a dead end you got
impaired driving is a dead end you got nowhere to go you're just going to get
caught in 2022 11,241 fatalities occurred in motor vehicle crashes due to
occurred in motor vehicle crashes due to unpaired driving every 50 minutes
unpaired driving every 50 minutes another fatality occurs due to impaired
driving how much alcohol is in a drink a standard 12 oz can of beer a 4 oz glass
standard 12 oz can of beer a 4 oz glass of wine and one and a/4 oun shot of
of wine and one and a/4 oun shot of whiskey all contain the same amount of
alcohol uh the effects of BAC or blood alcohol content are uh different um at a
alcohol content are uh different um at a 0.02 um you might see some W of judgment
0.02 um you might see some W of judgment relaxation and altered mood when you
relaxation and altered mood when you move up to that 08 the legal limit you
move up to that 08 the legal limit you can see muscle muscle excuse me
can see muscle muscle excuse me coordination becomes poor uh balance
coordination becomes poor uh balance speech Vision reaction time and hearing
speech Vision reaction time and hearing it's harder to detect danger and
it's harder to detect danger and judgment self-control reasoning and
judgment self-control reasoning and memory are all impaired and up to that
memory are all impaired and up to that 0.15 range almost double the limit you
0.15 range almost double the limit you can see far less muscle control vomiting
can see far less muscle control vomiting uh person has developed a tolerance for
uh person has developed a tolerance for alcohol and maybe a major loss of
balance Nebraska has an implied consent law Nebraska that states any driver that
law Nebraska that states any driver that operates a vehicle in Nebraska have
operates a vehicle in Nebraska have already agreed to submit to a chemical
already agreed to submit to a chemical test or test when requested by law
test or test when requested by law enforcement the term implied consent
enforcement the term implied consent simply means by choosing to drive a
simply means by choosing to drive a vehicle in Nebraska you must submit to a
vehicle in Nebraska you must submit to a chemical test or test when a police
chemical test or test when a police officer requests it refusal to submit to
officer requests it refusal to submit to a chemical test or test is a crime the
a chemical test or test is a crime the penalty if convicted can be worse than
penalty if convicted can be worse than the DUI itself so a chemical test is uh
the DUI itself so a chemical test is uh typically a breath test um there are two
typically a breath test um there are two um that occur in Nebraska um usually one
um that occur in Nebraska um usually one on the side of the road in uh the
on the side of the road in uh the picture there you can see an example of
picture there you can see an example of that and one back at a police station or
that and one back at a police station or a sheriff's office or at a jail and that
a sheriff's office or at a jail and that a more scientific test that uses a
a more scientific test that uses a different method to analyze the breath
different method to analyze the breath sample for alcohol content however all
sample for alcohol content however all of these tests are covered under implied
of these tests are covered under implied consent and you must submit to it if a
consent and you must submit to it if a police officer requests during a DOI
investigation Nebraska's DUI laws we have a zero tolerance DUI that says
have a zero tolerance DUI that says drivers under the age of 21 are subject
drivers under the age of 21 are subject to a lesser standard of
to a lesser standard of 02 a regular DUI is what most drivers
02 a regular DUI is what most drivers are subject to and that's a 8 when
are subject to and that's a 8 when operating a vehicle commercial motor
operating a vehicle commercial motor vehicle DUI operators of a commercial
vehicle DUI operators of a commercial motor vehicle are subject to that lesser
motor vehicle are subject to that lesser standard of 04 so half the
standard of 04 so half the 08 uh du is below the threshold of 08
08 uh du is below the threshold of 08 law enforcement in Nebraska can arrest
law enforcement in Nebraska can arrest someone for being under uh for excuse me
someone for being under uh for excuse me for driving under the influence even if
for driving under the influence even if they're under the quote legal limit if
they're under the quote legal limit if they can show impairment isue to alcohol
they can show impairment isue to alcohol or drugs and makes them unable to drive
or drugs and makes them unable to drive uh that is often times shown through the
uh that is often times shown through the field sobriety tests like the eye test
field sobriety tests like the eye test or uh walking and turning standing on
or uh walking and turning standing on one leg and those sort of things law
one leg and those sort of things law enforcement must show operation or
enforcement must show operation or actual physical control actual physical
actual physical control actual physical control means that the driver has the
control means that the driver has the ability to start and move the vehicle so
ability to start and move the vehicle so if you're behind the driver's seat and
if you're behind the driver's seat and you have the ability to start and move
you have the ability to start and move the vehicle you can get a DUI even if
the vehicle you can get a DUI even if you weren't driving down the
you weren't driving down the road another example if you're pulled
road another example if you're pulled over and a sleep behind the wheel with
over and a sleep behind the wheel with the vehicle off at the keys are in your
the vehicle off at the keys are in your pocket you are in actual physical
pocket you are in actual physical control uh so using those examples
control uh so using those examples something to be smart about when you are
something to be smart about when you are intoxicated and near your
vehicle uh Nebraska's DUI drugs drivers can be charged with dii drugs if
can be charged with dii drugs if impairment is found to be caused due to

prescribed there is not a set threshold like 08 for BAC for alcohol when
like 08 for BAC for alcohol when determining impairment due to drugs
determining impairment due to drugs officers document impairment using

marijana and the state of Colorado absolutely there is we're seeing an
absolutely there is we're seeing an increase in cannabis in the blood of
increase in cannabis in the blood of fatally injured drivers I had taken a
fatally injured drivers I had taken a whole bunch of Xanax that night for some
whole bunch of Xanax that night for some reason I realized that I was on the
reason I realized that I was on the wrong side of the road and I looked up
wrong side of the road and I looked up and there was cars coming at me and I
and there was cars coming at me and I veered off over the median and popped
veered off over the median and popped all four of my tires and went into a
all four of my tires and went into a ditch I remember times when my main
ditch I remember times when my main focus was trying to stay off the median
focus was trying to stay off the median and then when I would get to my parking
and then when I would get to my parking space I would just bounce into it you
space I would just bounce into it you know I I had no business being on the
know I I had no business being on the road so I think when people think about
road so I think when people think about medications and driving that they're
medications and driving that they're often thinking about kind of illegal
often thinking about kind of illegal drugs but that's not true for the
drugs but that's not true for the majority of people and these are
majority of people and these are medications that are highly used in the
medications that are highly used in the population increasingly Healthcare
population increasingly Healthcare Safety and law enforcement experts are
Safety and law enforcement experts are pointing to a new dangerous National
pointing to a new dangerous National trend driving under the influence of
trend driving under the influence of illicit drugs over-the-counter pills or
illicit drugs over-the-counter pills or even prescription
even prescription medications on any given day the people
medications on any given day the people driving next to you may present a
driving next to you may present a challenge for your

more and more people are getting high getting behind the wheel and not
getting behind the wheel and not thinking twice about
thinking twice about it I'm 24 years old I I don't think I
it I'm 24 years old I I don't think I ever had a problem driving law smoking
ever had a problem driving law smoking weed for the past five or six
weed for the past five or six years I've been battling with different
years I've been battling with different addictions
addictions specifically I hit rock bottom with
specifically I hit rock bottom with opiates which Shar painkillers I was
opiates which Shar painkillers I was raised in a middle class family my dad
raised in a middle class family my dad was a doctor my mom was a nurse
was a doctor my mom was a nurse my dad's always been an alcoholic uh I
my dad's always been an alcoholic uh I didn't look at him as an alcoholic until
didn't look at him as an alcoholic until I became an addict going into Middle
I became an addict going into Middle School I experimented smoking weed but
School I experimented smoking weed but it never went really
it never went really overboard near the end of my junior year
overboard near the end of my junior year of high school one friend in particular
of high school one friend in particular that I looked up to uh got me to try
that I looked up to uh got me to try ecstasy for the first time and
ecstasy for the first time and that's kind of how my harder drug use
that's kind of how my harder drug use started I tried opiates for the first
started I tried opiates for the first time and the drugs made me feel amazing
time and the drugs made me feel amazing and I didn't look at all the negative
and I didn't look at all the negative consequences of it so I felt like I was
consequences of it so I felt like I was in
in control and I definitely had a lot of
control and I definitely had a lot of issues
issues driving in the last 5 years I've totaled
driving in the last 5 years I've totaled four
four cars the night that I got my aggravated
cars the night that I got my aggravated DUI I was drunk and high on cocaine I
DUI I was drunk and high on cocaine I woke up from being passed out and I was

cuz he was trying to stop me from driving away I ended up burying off the
driving away I ended up burying off the road and hitting a barrier on the side
road and hitting a barrier on the side of a highway when I kind of came to I
of a highway when I kind of came to I was in the back seat of the cop car and
was in the back seat of the cop car and I have no memory of driving at all I was
I have no memory of driving at all I was blacked
blacked out when I was doing drugs I didn't
out when I was doing drugs I didn't really care about anybody but myself I
really care about anybody but myself I didn't really think about uh the risk I
didn't really think about uh the risk I was to other people in my situation I
was to other people in my situation I couldn't live the way I was anymore you
couldn't live the way I was anymore you get to a point in addiction where you
get to a point in addiction where you don't really have a choice it's either
don't really have a choice it's either treatment or death or treatment or
treatment or death or treatment or incarceration and for me it was kind of
incarceration and for me it was kind of a life or death
a life or death thing until I went to Residential
thing until I went to Residential Treatment my periods of sobriety were
Treatment my periods of sobriety were really really
really really short I live in a sober
short I live in a sober living house with seven other recovering
living house with seven other recovering addicts and it gives me the support I
addicts and it gives me the support I need to continue in
need to continue in recovery the opposite of addiction isn't
recovery the opposite of addiction isn't sobriety or being clean that opposite of
sobriety or being clean that opposite of actual addiction is fellowship and
actual addiction is fellowship and connection is to give you accountability
connection is to give you accountability for your
for your actions you can see the challenges that
actions you can see the challenges that we're facing in law enforcement are drug
we're facing in law enforcement are drug driving is becoming a national priority
driving is becoming a national priority for educators and law enforcement
for educators and law enforcement creating learning opportunities like the
creating learning opportunities like the Nebraska highway safety conference we
Nebraska highway safety conference we are seeing our officers now better
are seeing our officers now better trained for drug impairment making more
trained for drug impairment making more rest and keeping our community
rest and keeping our community safer Colorado is at the Forefront of
safer Colorado is at the Forefront of the drug driving dilemma it was the
the drug driving dilemma it was the first state to legalize recreational and
first state to legalize recreational and medical marijuana the question is
medical marijuana the question is are we seeing more and more drivers
are we seeing more and more drivers impaired by cannabis specifically in
impaired by cannabis specifically in this state right now we're still in this
this state right now we're still in this new era of legalized recreational
new era of legalized recreational marijuana there's hundreds of
marijuana there's hundreds of dispensaries throughout the state where
dispensaries throughout the state where a person 21y older can go purchase a
a person 21y older can go purchase a certain amount of marijuana and they can
certain amount of marijuana and they can use it in private Colorado adults are
use it in private Colorado adults are using marijuana at higher rates than
using marijuana at higher rates than others uh States that's a fact and we're
others uh States that's a fact and we're seeing increases in drug driving arrests
seeing increases in drug driving arrests related to
related to cannabis drug driving has always been a
cannabis drug driving has always been a problem but fortunately in law
problem but fortunately in law enforcement we're getting better and
enforcement we're getting better and better at how we identify drug impaired
better at how we identify drug impaired drivers the goal in the police
drivers the goal in the police department here so we are putting on a
department here so we are putting on a series of trainings for police officers
series of trainings for police officers to become more situationally aware on
to become more situationally aware on how to identify the drug impaired
how to identify the drug impaired drivers you're going to have the sways
drivers you're going to have the sways and then the Hop to prevent from falling
and then the Hop to prevent from falling the training that we're going through on
the training that we're going through on our department it's titled advaned

eyes your eyes only don't move your head1 1002
head1 1002 10034 this is the next level to help
10034 this is the next level to help police officers understand how to better
police officers understand how to better identify the drug impaired driver and
identify the drug impaired driver and know what signs and symptoms to look for
know what signs and symptoms to look for number n come on in another type of
number n come on in another type of training brings law enforcement officers
training brings law enforcement officers and members of the public together hey
and members of the public together hey everybody I want to welcome you guys
everybody I want to welcome you guys back to another green lab session in
back to another green lab session in 2015 I created a class called marijuana
2015 I created a class called marijuana DUI investigations the most unique
DUI investigations the most unique feature of the class is what is called a
feature of the class is what is called a green lab and that is where we take
green lab and that is where we take members of the community not the law
members of the community not the law enforcement students but we have them
enforcement students but we have them dose on
dose on marijuana I haven't driven in a long
marijuana I haven't driven in a long time but I used to drive all the time
time but I used to drive all the time stoned and uh never had a rag it makes
stoned and uh never had a rag it makes me more alert alert aware I'm like I

focus better with school less distracted I have to go out and function
distracted I have to go out and function I have to drive my car I going to school
I have to drive my car I going to school I'm going to work the focus the pain
I'm going to work the focus the pain relief that all lasts you know a decent
relief that all lasts you know a decent amount of time but like the Head trip
amount of time but like the Head trip part of it I can insta sober I'll be
part of it I can insta sober I'll be sober by the time I walk in there
sober by the time I walk in there obviously you've already agreed to do
obviously you've already agreed to do some roadside test for us so we'll start
some roadside test for us so we'll start off with that we allow the law
off with that we allow the law enforcement students to have access to
enforcement students to have access to that person so they can do roadsides
that person so they can do roadsides they can interview them they can ask
they can interview them they can ask questions of them and the whole purpose
questions of them and the whole purpose of the class is to get Law Enforcement
of the class is to get Law Enforcement Officers more comfortable with trying to
Officers more comfortable with trying to detect the marijuana impaired driver on
detect the marijuana impaired driver on a scale from 0 to 10 with zero being
a scale from 0 to 10 with zero being completely sober 10 being unconscious
completely sober 10 being unconscious how would you rate yourself on that
how would you rate yourself on that scale for how impaired you feel right
scale for how impaired you feel right now
now 2.5 really based on those I would take I
2.5 really based on those I would take I would take you into custody if you were
would take you into custody if you were driving yeah you're swaying Dre that um
driving yeah you're swaying Dre that um I picked up lack of convergence which is
I picked up lack of convergence which is when I come in like this especially
when I come in like this especially coming out your eyes are are hurky jerky
coming out your eyes are are hurky jerky they weren't really tracking evenly
they weren't really tracking evenly every smoker is different I I could get

lot Erica thanks the reality is marijuana is the number one drug after
marijuana is the number one drug after alcohol that we find in drivers on
alcohol that we find in drivers on American roads now we have a new
American roads now we have a new substance introduced public consumption
substance introduced public consumption that has its own impairing qualities and
that has its own impairing qualities and it's different from alcohol however
it's different from alcohol however there are no national standards for
there are no national standards for marijuana
marijuana impairment so the burden of proof rests
impairment so the burden of proof rests with drug
with drug recognition as a result all 108 Loveland
recognition as a result all 108 Loveland police officers are receiving roadside
police officers are receiving roadside Enforcement Training Adam 158 copy
Enforcement Training Adam 158 copy traffic 1939 when the laws changed and
traffic 1939 when the laws changed and marijuana became legalized in the state
marijuana became legalized in the state of Colorado uh we started to see it more
of Colorado uh we started to see it more prevalent within our community as far as
prevalent within our community as far as the traffic
the traffic stops one of my greatest passions is
stops one of my greatest passions is getting um drug impairing drivers off
getting um drug impairing drivers off the roadway just because I truly believe
the roadway just because I truly believe that whenever someone is impacted by
that whenever someone is impacted by someone who's driving under the
someone who's driving under the influence of all
influence of all or drugs they're innocent
or drugs they're innocent victims we're seeing an increase in
victims we're seeing an increase in cannabis in the blood of fatally injured
cannabis in the blood of fatally injured drivers and we have more than 10,000
drivers and we have more than 10,000 people in our country killed every year
people in our country killed every year on our nation's highways by impaired
on our nation's highways by impaired drivers that is a serious community
drivers that is a serious community health issue and problem in our country
health issue and problem in our country so as a chief that's what I look at
so as a chief that's what I look at protecting our our community and every
protecting our our community and every time we arrest an impaired driver or
time we arrest an impaired driver or deter somebody from driving a vehicle
deter somebody from driving a vehicle while impaired I believe we're saving
while impaired I believe we're saving lives good evening sir I'm officer
lives good evening sir I'm officer Gonzalez do you know the reason why I
Gonzalez do you know the reason why I pulled you
pulled you over not every drug driver recognizes
over not every drug driver recognizes the
the impairment well I was about 16 I got my
impairment well I was about 16 I got my first car couldn't tell me nothing cuz I
first car couldn't tell me nothing cuz I knew everything that's when I really
knew everything that's when I really became a genius I had all the answers so
became a genius I had all the answers so I made some choices that uh that were
I made some choices that uh that were not good smoking a little marijuana I
not good smoking a little marijuana I started doing pills just thought that
started doing pills just thought that everything was was okay because I was

with what I was doing I was really self-sabotaging and didn't know it you
self-sabotaging and didn't know it you don't get caught it
don't get caught it doesn't present itself as a problem but
doesn't present itself as a problem but Simmons did get caught repeatedly and
Simmons did get caught repeatedly and possession of cocaine sent him to prison
possession of cocaine sent him to prison four times Well in prison for the fourth

Osborne with that letter it actually changed my life I mean because the I
changed my life I mean because the I think the timing the timing was very
think the timing the timing was very very very important because I was at a
very very important because I was at a bad place I was a dark place as you and
bad place I was a dark place as you and I both know the drug culture can suck
I both know the drug culture can suck you in pretty fast oh absolutely I'm
you in pretty fast oh absolutely I'm glad I was able to be a small part of oh
glad I was able to be a small part of oh something good and and you know I
something good and and you know I appreciate that more than you'll ever
appreciate that more than you'll ever know and actually to be honest with you
know and actually to be honest with you I memorize that letter so that I can use
I memorize that letter so that I can use it in my speeches too to encourage
it in my speeches too to encourage others and I went to this party being
others and I went to this party being the genius I am and they were doing
the genius I am and they were doing stuff at this party that I was familiar
stuff at this party that I was familiar with and I tried this drug this drug
with and I tried this drug this drug called cocaine and I got hooked I think
called cocaine and I got hooked I think in another month I'll have eight years
in another month I'll have eight years clean and sober so I try to get people
clean and sober so I try to get people to understand especially our youth that
to understand especially our youth that what they're doing isn't brand
what they're doing isn't brand new they think riding around having a
new they think riding around having a couple of drinks smoking a little bit
couple of drinks smoking a little bit taking a pillow to they think that's new
taking a pillow to they think that's new man people was doing that before they
man people was doing that before they were thought about but they don't know
were thought about but they don't know that because they're only listening to
that because they're only listening to people their
people their age but if you ask Omaha Drug

things like that but they aren't aware that it causes them
that it causes them problems or significant problemss when

going on both of your tests you blew exactly the same thing three zos triple
exactly the same thing three zos triple zeros which means the instrument did not
zeros which means the instrument did not detect any alcohol on your breath he
detect any alcohol on your breath he definitely brought it to everyone's
definitely brought it to everyone's attention and now everybody knows it's a
attention and now everybody knows it's a problem it's the prescription it's like
problem it's the prescription it's like oh wow there are more of you people
oh wow there are more of you people doing that yes every day more and more
doing that yes every day more and more every day Prim example see the car in
every day Prim example see the car in front of us you see her riding the line
front of us you see her riding the line she's in the other lane those are
she's in the other lane those are indications of
indications of impairment it's difficult to tell
impairment it's difficult to tell someone they're not fine it's hardest if
someone they're not fine it's hardest if they've become an involved in an
they've become an involved in an accident and either harmed someone
accident and either harmed someone themselves or you know nearly get
themselves or you know nearly get involved in an accident and you tell
involved in an accident and you tell them but you're not fine and it's hard I
them but you're not fine and it's hard I mean they're good they're really good
mean they're good they're really good people out there that are you know their
people out there that are you know their medication is for a reason but my job
medication is for a reason but my job dictates that I protect everyone else
dictates that I protect everyone else out there you know I have to protect you
out there you know I have to protect you from yourself
from yourself sometimes my name is Megan and I'm 49
sometimes my name is Megan and I'm 49 years
years old I've been in recovery for over two
old I've been in recovery for over two years now
years now yeah much of the issue I had was with
yeah much of the issue I had was with prescriptions Looking Back Now I had
prescriptions Looking Back Now I had chronic headaches and it was just really
chronic headaches and it was just really really
really severe and by the time I became a
severe and by the time I became a teenager my mom was having me seek help
teenager my mom was having me seek help from a doctor and they decided to
from a doctor and they decided to prescribe benzo diazines which are
prescribe benzo diazines which are tranquilizers and it was very helpful
tranquilizers and it was very helpful for the condition that I had
for the condition that I had they encouraged me to take them if I'd
they encouraged me to take them if I'd had a hard day so that was just really
had a hard day so that was just really simple you just take a pill you have a
simple you just take a pill you have a hard day you take a pill and two was
hard day you take a pill and two was better than one and three was better
better than one and three was better than two and it just
than two and it just snowballed I knew that I had a problem
snowballed I knew that I had a problem and I knew I had to stop it never
and I knew I had to stop it never crossed my mind that I shouldn't have
crossed my mind that I shouldn't have been driving but I I
been driving but I I did it just didn't even cross my mind it
did it just didn't even cross my mind it scares me to death to think about how I
scares me to death to think about how I have at times in my life driven totally
have at times in my life driven totally under the influence of whatever I was
under the influence of whatever I was under the influence of at that moment
under the influence of at that moment there was one time that I drove my car
there was one time that I drove my car into the ditch instead of the
into the ditch instead of the driveway I remember times when my main
driveway I remember times when my main focus was trying to stay off the median
focus was trying to stay off the median and then when I would get to my parking
and then when I would get to my parking space I would just bounce into it you
space I would just bounce into it you know I I had no business being on the
know I I had no business being on the road another problem that I had was that
road another problem that I had was that I'm a healthc care professional I work
I'm a healthc care professional I work with people who have
with people who have addictions and in the particular field
addictions and in the particular field that I'm working in it was impossible
that I'm working in it was impossible for me to get any kind of treatment
for me to get any kind of treatment without one of my own clients finding
without one of my own clients finding out about it because of my need to
out about it because of my need to protect my
protect my identity I chose to do smart recovery
identity I chose to do smart recovery self-management and Recovery training
self-management and Recovery training and it's really about learning how to
and it's really about learning how to manage yourself and how to deal with
manage yourself and how to deal with urges and
urges and Cravings I think that most people just
Cravings I think that most people just blindly take whatever they're given no
blindly take whatever they're given no matter what it is whether it could be
matter what it is whether it could be addictive or not I think that a lot of
addictive or not I think that a lot of people including healthc Care
people including healthc Care Professionals are not educated on what
Professionals are not educated on what medications can be abused I mean how
medications can be abused I mean how many of us have gotten some bottle of
many of us have gotten some bottle of pills that said you know that it could
pills that said you know that it could cause
cause drowsiness and and it says to be careful
drowsiness and and it says to be careful driving how many people stay home when
driving how many people stay home when they get a pill like that I don't think
they get a pill like that I don't think anybody does our society doesn't allow
anybody does our society doesn't allow us to just not
us to just not drive we have to
drive we have to drive that need can create challenges
drive that need can create challenges for people who take daily
for people who take daily medications and it's become a focus for
medications and it's become a focus for researchers at the University of
researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center here at the mind
Nebraska Medical Center here at the mind and brain health lab researchers are
and brain health lab researchers are examining connections between personal
examining connections between personal medical needs reasoning and reactions
medical needs reasoning and reactions right looks like she's paying pretty
right looks like she's paying pretty good attention mhm we don't have an easy
good attention mhm we don't have an easy way of doing that in the clinic and
way of doing that in the clinic and telling how is it that the drugs that we
telling how is it that the drugs that we give or the diseases that people have
give or the diseases that people have play out in the real world and that's
play out in the real world and that's what we do here hi Mrs Smith how are you
what we do here hi Mrs Smith how are you good how are you driving is a great lab
good how are you driving is a great lab laboratory for how the brain works
laboratory for how the brain works what's going to happen is you're going
what's going to happen is you're going to drive through all kinds of roadways
to drive through all kinds of roadways because when you think about it you have
because when you think about it you have to make a lot of decisions and do things
to make a lot of decisions and do things under pressure of time and it's all
under pressure of time and it's all happening pretty quickly you just have
happening pretty quickly you just have to use the car just the way you would
to use the car just the way you would and I'm going to get out of your way
and I'm going to get out of your way here all right when a driver is in the
here all right when a driver is in the simulator we expose them to challenges
simulator we expose them to challenges people who are impaired because they
people who are impaired because they have disease where they're taking a drug
have disease where they're taking a drug may not actually make appropriate
may not actually make appropriate Corrections and then they're more to
Corrections and then they're more to risk of injury hurting themselves or
risk of injury hurting themselves or other people or even death oh that's an
other people or even death oh that's an interesting
interesting thing most of the studies relate to a
thing most of the studies relate to a full range of medical conditions it
full range of medical conditions it turns out that there is a really
turns out that there is a really important disease of sugar control
important disease of sugar control called diabetes over 10% of the
called diabetes over 10% of the population has diabetes I mean millions
population has diabetes I mean millions and billions of people you know and
and billions of people you know and those numbers are projected to increase
those numbers are projected to increase to about 2 billion worldwide so we give
to about 2 billion worldwide so we give people insulin in an attempt to keep
people insulin in an attempt to keep their blood sugar under control and when
their blood sugar under control and when it gets too low your brain doesn't have
it gets too low your brain doesn't have the fuel it needs to think you may get
the fuel it needs to think you may get drowsy you may become inattentive you
drowsy you may become inattentive you may not make good
may not make good decisions just like low blood sugar has
decisions just like low blood sugar has an effect on the brain it's possible
an effect on the brain it's possible that chemotherapy agents which a lot of
that chemotherapy agents which a lot of people take who have breast cancer or
people take who have breast cancer or colon cancer may also affect thinking a
colon cancer may also affect thinking a lot of patients complain after they've
lot of patients complain after they've had chemotherapy that they have
had chemotherapy that they have attention or memory deficits and we kind
attention or memory deficits and we kind of call that chemo
of call that chemo brain and you know these attention and
brain and you know these attention and memory abilities are critical for your
memory abilities are critical for your ability to drive um so that's what we're
ability to drive um so that's what we're trying to understand and to better
trying to understand and to better evaluate Behavior patients are taking
evaluate Behavior patients are taking realistic driving tests in especially
realistic driving tests in especially equipped car or having their own vehicle
equipped car or having their own vehicle outfitted with cameras and sensors
outfitted with cameras and sensors one big question is are people actually
one big question is are people actually getting into the car when they're in an
getting into the car when they're in an unsafe State we can't evaluate that in
unsafe State we can't evaluate that in the lab because we can't monitor people
the lab because we can't monitor people over long periods of time to see what
over long periods of time to see what they're doing set lights up ahead while
they're doing set lights up ahead while be turning right onto Saddle Creek black
be turning right onto Saddle Creek black boxes are sensor instrumentation that we
boxes are sensor instrumentation that we put into people's own cars so we
put into people's own cars so we actually remotely monitor their driving
actually remotely monitor their driving behavior over extended time frames like
behavior over extended time frames like a month to 3 months with the black boxes
a month to 3 months with the black boxes we can see that real world Behavior and
we can see that real world Behavior and so we can establish real world risk and
so we can establish real world risk and looking ahead the ultimate answer May
looking ahead the ultimate answer May lie in Smart Car Technology designing
lie in Smart Car Technology designing Smart Systems in a car is one way to
Smart Systems in a car is one way to cope with people who have trouble like
cope with people who have trouble like low blood glucose and diabetes so when
low blood glucose and diabetes so when you think about it right now we actually
you think about it right now we actually do have some kind of automated systems
do have some kind of automated systems to help us out but it may come a time
to help us out but it may come a time where the car can actually recognize
where the car can actually recognize that you're impaired and take over so
that you're impaired and take over so that's a project that we're actually
that's a project that we're actually actually working on right now with
actually working on right now with Toyota and this is an area that is of
Toyota and this is an area that is of major interest to car companies we're
major interest to car companies we're teaching the car you need to drive for
teaching the car you need to drive for the person when they're in this state
the person when they're in this state and that's really important when you're
and that's really important when you're thinking about these medical populations
thinking about these medical populations where they have to drive every single
where they have to drive every single day you can't just take them off the
day you can't just take them off the road you can't just say you're impaired
road you can't just say you're impaired right now don't get into the car so we
right now don't get into the car so we just have to develop smarter vehicles
just have to develop smarter vehicles and that's what we're
and that's what we're doing in the meantime result solving the
doing in the meantime result solving the drug driving dilemma remains with the
drug driving dilemma remains with the drivers themselves I do think that
drivers themselves I do think that sometimes hitting a low point will help
sometimes hitting a low point will help us to take stock that sometimes a low
us to take stock that sometimes a low Point can really wake you up be an
Point can really wake you up be an opportunity to change in my situation I
opportunity to change in my situation I couldn't live the way I was anymore I I
couldn't live the way I was anymore I I realized that I just physically could
realized that I just physically could not go on and I needed to find a new way
not go on and I needed to find a new way to live it's all avoidable people need
to live it's all avoidable people need to make that decision not to drive
to make that decision not to drive before they put a substance in their
before they put a substance in their body that's going to impair them because
body that's going to impair them because once the impairment happens the Judgment
once the impairment happens the Judgment goes out the door and people make bad
goes out the door and people make bad mistakes good people make bad mistakes
mistakes good people make bad mistakes [Music]
