Core Theme
The sermon emphasizes the importance of spiritual integrity, symbolized by the "girdle of truth," and divine righteousness, represented by the "breastplate of righteousness," as essential defenses for believers against Satan's attacks and for living a life pleasing to God.
welcome to back to the Bible radio with
Pastor best-selling author and
internationally known Bible teacher
Warren where's B he has written more
than 150 books on subjects ranging from
Bible engagement to practical ways we
can move closer to Jesus each day
let's join dr. Weir's be and see what
God's Word has for us today Dan
therefore having your loins girded about
with truth the girdle that the Roman
soldier wore was not a strip of cloth
around his waist or even a narrow belt
usually it was something like a leather
apron that helped to protect the lower
part of his body this girdle also held
his sword and we find in Ephesians 6:17
that the sword is the Word of God now
what does this girdle of truth
illustrate in the life of the believer
in the Bible a girdle has the function
of pulling things together
you'll recall that people in Bible days
usually dressed in somewhat loose and
flowing robes when they wanted to move
rapidly they had to get a girdle and tie
their robes together and then they could
move rapidly you see the girdle of truth
speaks to us of a life pulled together
and lived for one thing namely the glory
of God to win the battle to the glory of
God we're talking about integrity truth
in the inner being that's what David
said in Psalm 51 6 that God wants the
truth in the inward parts it's not
enough just to carry the sword of the
Spirit the Word of God the truth of the
word of God must penetrate our very
lives so that our actions and our
motives are governed by integrity truth
it's amazing how much Paul has to say
about truth in his letter to the
Ephesians speaking the truth in love the
truth as it is in Christ Jesus lie not
one to another seeing that you have put
off the old man he's talking about integra
integra
t-that settled conviction of life that
directs us in the right direction now
the opposite of integrity is duplicity
duplicity means being double in your
life being a dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde
duplicity means hypocrisy and the only
way the soldier is going to win the
battle is that he is determined that he
is going to win he has pulled his life
together he's pulled everything together
he's focusing on that one thing it's
Paul in Philippians chapter 3 this one
thing I do now if you and I are going to
stand our ground we must declare our
allegiance to Christ and maintain our
integrity the minute there is any kind
of duplicity in our lives division in
our lives that gives an opening and
Satan can attack us and then he gets a
foothold and then he grows in his
influence over our lives and then we are
defeated let's consider this girdle of
truth this subject of integrity by way
of explanation and then secondly by way
of illustration I want us to meet a
three winners and three losers in the
battle of life the winners won because
they put on the girdle and they had
integrity the losers lost because they
practiced duplicity Matthew chapter 6
verse 19 talks to us about this matter
of duplicity and integrity when I was in
grade school learning mathematics our
teacher said that we had whole numbers
that were called integers and then we
had other numbers that were called
fractions an integer is a whole number
integrity means a whole person
notice in verses 19 through 21 of
Matthew chapter 6 Jesus says where your
treasure is there will your heart be
also lay not up for yourselves treasures
upon earth but lay up for yourselves
treasures in heaven why for where your
treasure is there will your heart be
also don't have a
at heart don't look for the treasures
and pleasures of this world and then at
the same time try to go after the
treasures and the joys of the Christian
life now God does give us all things
richly to enjoy God does want us to
enjoy life but God does not want our
hearts focused on the things of this
world this is integrity we have a single heart
heart
we love the treasures of God and not the
treasures of this world then in verses
22 and 23
he talks not about the double heart but
about the double mind Matthew 6:20 - the
lamp of the body is the eye if therefore
thine eye be healthy or single thy whole
body shall be full of light but if thine
eye be evil that is defective thy whole
body shall be full of darkness if
therefore the light that is in thee be
darkness how great is that darkness here
he's talking about a double-minded
person a person who's trying to look in
two directions now the eye represents
the outlook if your outlook is not
healthy then you are not going to be
healthy inwardly your outlook determines
your outcome and a double-minded person
is unstable in all of his ways James 1:8
tells us that so beware of the double
heart and beware of the double mind and
then in verse 24
beware of the double will no man can
serve two masters now here's a person
trying to submit his will to two masters
for either he will hate the one and love
the other or else he will hold to the
one and despise the other you cannot
serve God and Mammon or money wealth
treasure now the Lord Jesus makes it
very clear that we must have integrity
what causes worry in people's lives
duplicity they are double hearted and
they love the treasures of this world
but they also try to love the Lord they
are double minded they have one eye on
having the other eye on the world trying
to make the best of both worlds and they
are double willed one minute they're
serving God the next minute they're
serving Mammon and this does not work it
pulls your life apart the only way you
and I can have this beautiful integrity
is to practice that greatest of all the
commandments do you remember what our
Lord Jesus had to say about that love
the Lord thy God with all thy heart we
don't want to be double-minded with all
thy soul and with all thy mind we don't
want to be double willed and with all
thy strength this is integrity it means
putting on the girdle of truth and
saying I am totally devoted to the Lord
I don't have another master my outlook
is only to look to him looking unto
Jesus the author and finisher of our
faith I love him with all of my heart I
listen to him with all of my attention I
understand his word with all of my mind
and I want to do his will with all of my
will that is integrity
oh it's so easy for us to have a dual
allegiance instead of building our house
on the rock we build a duplex we have
part of the house on the rock and part
of the house on the sand and then we
wonder why things fall apart now by way
of illustration let's look at a number
of people in the Bible who put on the
girdle of truth that is integrity the
first war you find in the Bible is in
Genesis chapter 14 and Abraham got into
that war only because lot his nephew had
been captured by the opposing army in
Genesis 14 we find Abraham winning the
war and delivering a lot now why did a
lot get into that mess why was a lot
found in the wrong camp well because he
was double minded in Genesis chapter 13
you read about lot lot was the kind of a
person who tried to keep his eyes on
different parts of life he had one eye
on the heavenly City and one eye on
Sodom Genesis 13 verse
Tannen a lot lifted up his eyes and
beheld all the plain of Jordan that it
was well watered everywhere before the
Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah even
as the Garden of the Lord like the land
of Egypt as thou comest unto Zohar now
here you have lot taking off the girdle
of truth he's losing his integrity why
because he has a double minded approach
to life
he has a double hearted and a double
willed approach to life he drifts off
into Sodom when the people of Sodom were
taken captive lot could do nothing about
it he didn't have any armor on he had no
protection he lost ground it was uncle
Abraham the man with the integrity who
delivered him
I like that closing scene in Genesis 14
where the king of Sodom comes and says
to Abraham take all the wealth that you
want Abraham said I made up my mind
before this battle ever started I
wouldn't even take a shoelace from you
that's integrity Abraham didn't go out
to battle and say well I wonder what I'm
gonna get out of this he said I'm going
out to rescue my brother lot Abraham had
integrity lot didn't I'm thinking of
Joshua Joshua chapter 5 before the
Battle of Jericho Joshua was out there
looking the situation over and it came
to pass according to Joshua 5:13 and it
came to pass when Joshua was by Jericho
that he lifted up his eyes and looked
and behold there stood a man over
against him with his sword drawn in his
hand and Joshua went unto him and said
unto Him art thou for us or for our
adversaries now that's integrity he's
not saying well I wonder which side he's
on and if I can pacify him I wonder if I
can do so little politicking here no he
said whose side are you on that's
integrity when you go out to fight the
battle when you go out to face the enemy
you'd better have on the girdle of truth
and be on one side or the other in fact
at the end of Joshua's life that's what
he was telling the people wasn't he in
Joshua chapter 24 verse 14 now therefore
fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and
and
in truth that's integrity that's the
girdle of truth
no wonder Joshua won the battle no
wonder Joshua conquered the lamb and
defeated it any evil unto you to serve
the Lord choose you this day whom you
will serve but as for me and my house we
will serve the Lord that's the girdle of
truth no wonder Joshua won the battle
no wonder Joshua conquered the land and
defeated the enemy but you don't find
Aiken doing that in Joshua chapter 7
ache and one of the Jewish soldiers was
double minded he didn't go into the
battle to win a victory for the Lord he
was wondering what can I get for myself
he was double minded he was double
hearted part of his heart was loving the
things of the world and when he saw that
wealth there he stoled it and he buried
it he was double willed he was trying to
serve two masters and what happened it
killed him he was defeated and he caused
the defeat of the whole army when they
went to fight AI I think of David and
Saul you know why God called David in
His grace Psalm 78 verse 17 he chose
David also his servant and took him from
the sheepfolds from following the ewes
great with young he brought him to feed
jacob his people in israel his
inheritance so he fed them according to
the integrity of his heart and guided
them by the skillfulness of his hands I
don't care how skillful your hands are
if you don't have integrity in your
heart God can't use you now David went
from victory to victory because he was a
man of integrity he had put on the
girdle of truth he was a man after God's
own heart but contrast him to saw
contrast him to King Saul the first king
of the people Saul didn't have integrity
he had duplicity David came with
confessions but Saul had excuses Oh Saul
had armor and Saul had a sword and Saul
was a big man and supposed to be a great
hero but Saul did not put on the gird
of truth and therefore God could not
bless him
are you seeking to please the Lord and
to please him only are you double-minded
is there duplicity oh my friend confess
it and forsake it and follow the counsel
that joshua gave as for me in my house
we will serve the Lord
no exceptions no compromise I am on the
Lord's side I'm going to put on the
girdle of truth and I'm going to battle
in integrity Ephesians 6:13 admonishes
the believer wherefore take unto you the
whole armour of God that you may be able
to withstand in the evil day and having
done all to stand stand therefore having
your loins girded about with truth and
having on the breastplate of
righteousness stand therefore having on
the breastplate of righteousness now to
a Roman soldier the breastplate was very
important it was a coat of mail that
covered the soldiers body from the neck
to the thighs both front and back
there's a tradition that the Christian
doesn't have any armor to protect the
back and therefore he should not turn
around and run but actually the Roman
soldier Paul was looking at when he
wrote these words was wearing
undoubtedly this breastplate and it
covered his upper body from the neck to
the thighs both front and back in other
words it protected the vital organs the
heart and the lungs and so forth
now the Christian soldiers coat of mail
is the righteousness of God received by
faith in Jesus Christ it's what we call
imputed righteousness now in the Bible
you're going to find two kinds of
righteousness imputed righteousness that
which God gives to us by faith and
imparted righteousness that which we
live out in our daily lives imputed
righteousness is justification imparted
righteousness is sanctification you read
about him
suited righteousness in Romans chapter 3
beginning at verse 19 now we know that
what things soever the law Seth it says
to them who are under the law that every
mouth may be stopped and all the world
may become guilty before God therefore
by the deeds of the law there shall no
flesh be justified in his sight for by
the law is the knowledge of sin but now
the righteousness of God without the law
is manifested being witnessed by the law
and the prophets even the righteousness
of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ
unto all and upon all them that believe
for there is no difference for all have
sinned and come short of the glory of
God being justified freely by His grace
through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus
Jesus
imputed righteousness means God puts his
righteousness on our account he not only
goes to the record book and erases
completely our record but to make sure
that nothing else is written on that
page he puts his own righteousness on
that page and that settles it once and
for all when you turn to that page in
the book and there's your name written
down in heaven and under your name it
says righteous in Jesus Christ that is
imputed righteousness now we need to put
this on every day every day you need to
by faith put on the breastplate of
righteousness and reaffirm I am
righteous in Jesus Christ you're not
depending on your own righteousness you
are depending on the righteousness of
Jesus Christ why do you need this
righteousness because Satan is the
accuser you see we need to wear the
girdle of truth because Satan is the
divider he wants us to practice
duplicity we need integrity that's the
girdle of truth
Satan is the one who denounces God's
people he's the accuser
and that's why we need the breastplate
of righteousness because apart from the
righteousness of God through faith in
Jesus Christ we cannot stand against the
evil one Revelation chapter 12 and verse
10 says and I heard a loud voice saying
in heaven now is come salvation and
strength and the Kingdom of our God and
the power of his Christ for the accuser
of our brethren is cast down which
accused them before our God day and
night Satan is the accuser he accuses us
before God and he accuses God before us
when he talks to God about you he tells
the truth because he knows the truth and
when he talks to you about God he lies
he accuses God of all sorts of things
that God never thought or said or did
now what is Satan's strategy will
Satan's strategy is I think threefold
number one Satan
encourages us to accuse ourselves there
are some Christians who just have a
perpetual autopsy a perpetual
introspection and they're constantly
accusing themselves now if the devil can
get you to accuse yourself he's really
won a battle secondly Satan encourages
other people to accuse us I notice that
everybody in the Bible who tried to
serve the Lord was falsely accused they
accusing the amaya of trying to become a
king they accused David of doing things
he never did many of the Psalms deal
with David praying oh God silence those
Liars silence those false accusers in
Saul's Court who are telling him lies
about me Moses went through this he was
accused of being a dictator his own
brother and sister accused him of trying
to lord it over everybody the Apostle
Paul was falsely accused and you know
how Paul dealt with these false
accusations 2nd Corinthians chapter 6
and we read in verse 3 giving no offence
in anything at the ministry be not
blamed then he lists all the things he
went through
and how he was able to go through them
by pureness by knowledge by the word of
truth by the power of God by the armor
of righteousness on the right hand and
on the left Paul said there calling me
all sorts of things they're telling all
kinds of lies about me makes no
difference I'm wearing the armor of
righteousness I've got the breastplate
of righteousness on let them accuse all
they want to my how they falsely accused
the Lord Jesus accused him of being a
glutton and a wine-bibber accuse him of
being a demon-possessed man accused him
of being a liar a deceiver but the Lord
Jesus Christ did not worry or fret over
what they were saying because he knew he
was the very son of God now when other
people accuse you turn to your
intercessor the Lord Jesus Christ Romans
chapter eight puts this soul beautifully
verse 31 what shall we then say to these
things if God be for us who can be
against us who shall lay anything to the
charge of God's elect it is God that
justifier who is he that condemneth it
is Christ that died yea rather that is
risen again who is even at the right
hand of God who also maketh intercession
for us you see when you're wearing the
breastplate of righteousness you know
that the interceding Son of God in glory
is representing you before the throne of
God Satan encourages us to accuse
ourselves and he encourages others to
accuse us and sometimes he makes us
believe that circumstances accuse us oh
if I were right with God we say I
wouldn't be going through this
difficulty that's what job's friends
told him oh how they accused him they
said if the circumstances were different
we'd believe you job but what you're
going through is proof that God is
punishing you for your sins we don't
walk by sight we walk by faith and we
have on the breastplate of righteousness
and no matter what the circumstances may
be God will not forsake us Satan is the
user by faith you put on the breastplate
of righteousness and you remember that
you're wearing it and when these
accusations come from circumstances or
from people or from yourself just
remember I'm wearing the righteousness
of Jesus Christ and the righteousness of
Jesus Christ makes me accepted in the
beloved we're glad you joined us today
