brodie mcelroy crosses the road at the lights
brodie enters the boxsteel institute and
walks through the hallways
brody exits the building on the other
side and walks along a path [Music]
[Music]
brodie arrives at the courtyard where a
music stage is set up
brody is welcomed by his friends
brody mcelroy i used to go to do
to two day programs but i i go to
i like box hill more because i learn about
about
my passion and also a lot of people
brody's friends talk about brody he's
pretty friendly
and he's just fun to be around he's
always positive
he's always he's always happy he's
always up for a good time
and he's just he's in he's in for the
music that's it
brody placed drums in a band with shots
of brody hanging out with his [Music]
[Music]
how friends a quarter to ten
come tomorrow let's all do it again
once we'll be boys we're gonna let them
have the toys [Music]
peter satchel coordinator of brody's
music course
box hill uh institute's approach to
inclusion is that everyone's entitled to a
a
education no matter what walker life
social demographic culture
background you know like it's just
they're more than welcome to come
and be included everyone's got the right
to learn my advice to other universities
schools and learning centres would be to embrace
embrace
everyone who wants to learn because it
creates an experience for
all students no matter what walk of life
they come from brody
mcilroy i got started at box hill
um because my mom thought this was a
good place
and then she said you should come here
to learn what
you know you want to learn then i like i
agreed and then came
and started learning what i had to learn
brodie receives instruction in class
from benjamin murphy
his electronic music composition teacher
and you see how in the background it's
kind of like light lines and dark lines
yeah so if you know that's just above
the black one that is here right here
double click there
exactly all right how about you extend
that e
for the whole length of that b so all
exactly benjamin murphy everybody has
two classes with me
um he has a class on electronic music
composition and electronic music performance
performance
so in one class we are learning to compose
compose
electronic music pieces uh doing things like
like
remixes and writing songs around vocal accompaniment
accompaniment
and working with software and
controllers for software and stuff like
that to
build together electronic songs and then
the electronic music performance class
is based upon different formats of
electronic music performance
such as djing it's largely focused
around djing
so we've had assessments like putting
together a mixtape
and learning how to use the
dj hardware like the mixing desk and the
cd players and that kind of stuff
brodie has a good sense of humor and i
support him with his focus by doing some
one-on-one interactions as we progress
through the task sheets
brody mcelroy when i'm not at uni i have
a part-time job at every park
and i earn a bit of money yeah
which is good for
you know your average daily stuff like
movies and
shopping and whatever what i like about
tafe is my friends because
they give me encouragement
they're nice you know i feel comfortable
around them
when i'm playing drums in a band i feel happy
happy
and joyful you know gets rid of anger or
stress or whatever the hell
you have but [Music]
rob braditic brody's band teacher
brody's uh electronic media student he's um
um
he's doing cert iii at box hill and he's
not very experienced in the music so
he's learning things from a very
fundamental level
and he's very positive he's very excited
about what he's doing here [Music]
[Music]
just recently he's had up with his
computer so he's actually been more
involved in actual physically playing
music which is probably not what he was expecting
expecting
so and he's loving it so he's very you
know encouraged to
to sort of just do it and he is he's
actually just jumped straight in and
he's playing drums and he's playing
percussion instruments
it's probably not what he was expecting
is probably a little bit out of his uh
comfort zone but he's
he's uh he's actually swimming rather
than sinking he's doing great
brody plays percussion with a band
brady's friends followed by brody it is
great having him in the band his
enthusiasm is contagious to all of us
and he's picked up the donuts very
quickly um
like most most people suddenly don't
be able to perform
yeah brody brings a lot of enthusiasm
and energy to the to the classes and the band
band
it's great great great [Music]
[Music]
