when - during calculation can the
quarter's well business had to be
returned to them so my uncle got back
his place and Dave my aunt was happy she
got the another sister's child and then
I heard Lee is alive in Baxter he say
yeah he says I sent already a telegram
he says where he said no they don't live
there so my uncle hide away took the
trolley went to send another telegram to
the real address so the second telegram
came - we got to Telegraph during that
time between oh that the ticket came
from the Redcoats and I was able to
travel legally because you know I had no
passport nothing I mean I was still mine
my uncle won and smuggled into Belgium
to be able to see his brother and I'm
sure the custom quite a penny but didn't
you want to see well in Paris we were
split okay because I went legally and he
went illegal so to Paris he knew some
people there he found them and they took
care of him to go to I go on the collar
I still remember where my uncle lists
everything so I went there my father
goes out of the place he looks all
swollen you didn't even look skinny like
you know you you heard people saying
that the people coming out from company
he was slowing know here you know just
old to grow and he look so pathetic I
mean so worn out so old to me I thought
it was another custom of my uncle you
know I didn't realize it was my father I
walked in the house and my aunt esteem
and she thought it was a customer
dogfish yeah who is it
I say it's Lea she said what kind of Alya
Alya
you know you she told it was the other
Leah's she said count the coolest aunt
since it's Leah she him down the steps
and she will right away who I was the
criteria cottages
worked out and I ran out and I realize
it was him and I heard after him is Papa
that's very for friends in French and I
require distilling industry days and cry
my aunt was looking at us he's just
that's what I asked elated my mother I
said we'll talk about it you never
wanted to talk about her then we came
back in their house they never went with
my uncle went by himself and he was back
with me
and he told me that my cousin was a life
and I knew I remember her from going to
Poland and then we found out that the
other niece is alive too from the older
sister one of them but she lived in
France and then after this
my father just helped my uncle Venus
shoemaker tried to make ends meet the
orked trained me for tightening
shorthand but I never used it and the
clothing came to the Jewish community
centers and we were allowed to go and
pick out what we could each child
without to pick up one or two outfit I
don't remember I had no winter coat so
from an American blanket both in the
black market we dyed it in brown and we
had a coat made for me and because when
it was approaching in Belgium the
winners are putting off and we stayed
with my aunt for a while everything runs
smooth but it was rough everything was
crowded we were all together and it
kind of stay there
my father stated and [Music]
he wanted me to I was so innocent he
wanted me to go pickups on my mother
console just tell me doesn't feed me
from nothing you want to do black-market
with them I guess and he's still alive
that uncle man I'd never hold grudge
against them funny because I love my
aunt so much she came upstairs and says
he didn't mean it the way it took it and
I was crying saying you only get away
from me and I was going to jump out the
window during that time my father walks
in and he took his sister hit him
against the wall
she's what you're trying to do destroy
my only child
after this he took me in took me to
another cousin of his and I stay with
her and he paid her because she was a
woman along with a chance paid her for
the food not for keeping me I stayed
with her then to give her the break he
cook with to someone else because
everybody was struggling you know to
another friend of from his hometown and
that the daughter was a good friend of
mom in the beginning when I saw my daddy
I didn't want to leave him all I wanted
even to sleep with him I was afraid it
was going to disappear again he decided
that it was not healthy the way I was
clinging to him in the side there was
not a you tokenization the Jewish
community and he said you have to try to
be with young people your age
it took me there unless meeting
I like it with the end of the world like
he had abandoned me and then discussing
in the Hebrew song and doing the whole
had a young people we all sang and I
said in all of a sudden my husband
wasn't the coop of the year came and
picked me up told me if if come on let's
dance the hora that's the way I met him
and we all danced and I joined the coop
game I was still young I mean just
meeting all the kids and then some of
them I remember from before the world
that I knew very well and after this I
got a little bit better and I could stay
away from my daddy you know after a
while we stayed there my father got back
his off place but all he destroy not the
kitchen and not the room in the back so
he put a curtain in the middle and he
slept there in that bed and I slept at
the neighbor's house not enough rooms so
the law was I could not stay in the same
house with my father it was separate but
then eventually the landlady gave us
back the back she had people living
there so she could not just put him up
you know they had to find the wrong
living quarters then they gave me back
the kitchen in the federal she had all
my parents furniture my father's tools
everything in the basement hidden so he
got everything back that's why I still
have some of this all the picture that I
found you know and some my older and
think we had a pudding over one after
this you know my father tried to pick up
the pieces struggling and make a go of
it Leah can you can you tell us how you
came to the United Stated us in 1948 I
get marry and [Music]
[Music]
my husband had already paper that was
fathered by his grandmother who was here
for 40 years in the United States that
he never met and so he was included with
his pain because my father found his
mother you know she fouled him that he
was a life or take I just go the I
really don't know so he had his quota
but I'm from the Belgium citizen so I
couldn't go with him his parents came to
the United States first and I think that
wasn't nineteen I came in 1952 they came
a year before and they were you know
pretty they did pretty well in Belgium
when they saw that he was the best round
is my in-laws and things like this so
they right away could go into business
and they had money a little bit so they
could help us from Africa made the trip
well but I didn't have no body to
sponsor me my mother loved fund to niece
and nephew here in the United States and
one of the cousins my husband's cousin
sponsored me and like that's the way my
husband came under this polish quota and
I came under the Belgian Corps they took
very little time just legalized paper
that was an open court of the Belgian
people you know the Polish people they
had to wait six years before they could
look close to that I don't know many
more years and we came to the United
States and scrawled in your life I had
one child by their nose honey my oldest
one was born in Belgium and how did you
make your way to South Carolina the job
my husband
the place went bankrupt and he looked
for a job when we had some
french-speaking scans here and they
offered my husband the position to be a
manager and they trained him for it and
we wind up in Spartanburg first and then
here in Columbia Leah thank you so much
