long legs is written and directed by Oz
Perkins this is actually his fourth film
but this film is going to put him on the
map in a big way so in pursuit of a
serial killer an FBI agent uncovers a
series of occult clues that she must
solve to end his terrifying Killing
Spree I haven't been this excited to see
a new movie in a while when I was
sitting in this theater with my friend
which was packed at a 10:30 showing in
the middle of the night there absolutely
was this warm feeling of anticipation in
the theater it felt like everybody was
buzzing about it and as soon as the
production logo started the entire
theater fell silent which was a
wonderful thing to hear but as of late
every time I get very excited about a
movie coming out I almost always get
disappointed it's this horrible thing
that keeps happening this is not the
case with long legs long legs blew me
the [ __ ] away I loved this film so much
there is so much to talk about I could
go on about this movie for an hour
there's going to be a million explain
videos and Analysis about the movie and
I just want to talk about the fact that
I just sat in a filled theater in the
middle of the night for an original
horror movie and that alone is fantastic
the choice to not include Nicholas Cage
in any of the marketing was not only
gutsy but extremely exciting I felt like
is this Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire
and Spider-Man no way home like are they
going to be in this thing what do they
look like what are they going to do that
level of anticipation is very difficult
to achieve but because of my intense
fandom for Nicholas Cage I felt so
pumped to see what he was going to do in
the film and I had no idea about
anything and I won't get into a single
spoiler I will allow you to know exactly
what I knew going in which was that he's
in the film and that's it he is
magnificent here what I loved so much
about his work and how Oz Perkins
captured that work it kind of relates to
this quote that Jordan Peele has said
that the only difference between comedy
and horror is the music because you
could look at what Nicholas Cage is
doing in this movie and somebody from
like 2011 on YouTube could make a mashup
of his scenes in this film and try to
make them seem funny but they're not I
was deeply unsettled by cage in this
film and that's coming from somebody who
would basically step in front of moving
train for that guy I may or may not love
Nicholas Cage too much but his work in
this film is absolutely disturbing he's
also in the movie for just the right
amount of time there's going to be a lot
of comparisons to Silence of the Lambs
seven zodiac and other serial killer
movies but when I was watching the film
I thought instantly of cure which as
I've said in the past is an excellent
film if you've never seen it it's
fantastic you got to see that film at
some point but the sort of surreal
dreamlike imagery of that movie along
with the hypnotic qualities of it were
all over long legs mik Monroe was also
very very good as Lee Harker this FBI
agent there are things about her
character I just won't get into so you
can experience them for yourselves but
there's definitely something going on
with her relating to these cases
relating to the Killer and how she's
able to understand things and and get
deeper into the case that other agents
weren't able to and she has a Vibe about
her throughout the whole movie that is
similar to really everything in the film
from the editing to the sound design is
just offputting there's something just
off about her the way she speaks the way
she moves and it all plays so well for
the purpose of the movie and what we
eventually learn which is such an
incredibly difficult thing to do because
you have characters in the movie that
are playing off her Blair Underwood for
instance as her Superior at the bureau
and he's really good in the movie too I
haven't seen him in a long time that was
a really nice thing to see but when it
comes to the way she talks she clearly
is speaking in like different
inflections than everyone else and there
are things that she's doing the Way She
Moves the way she sort of hears things
or notices things that feels different
from everyone else but the fact that you
have these sort of touchstones in Blair
Underwood's character where you can be
like okay so that's like a normal
person he's normal okay so like what's
going on with her it all just builds to
this wonderful feeling of dread that
permeated me throughout the entire movie
her mother is played by Alicia wit who I
didn't even realize was her until I
looked her up at the end of the movie
and I was like oh my urban legend fandom
has been validated thank you there's not
quite as many wide- angle lenses as yoro
land Theos love to use in poor things
when it comes to Long Legs there's a
whole bunch of wide angle shots he likes
to Center people right in the middle of
the frame Oz Perkins make a lot of space
feel like there's emptiness there you're
constantly looking behind characters
wondering if something's going to sneak
up on them there's a scene where mik
Monroe is opening a letter and for most
of the scene you can also see her
kitchen door frame in the background and
you're just
like [ __ ] that doorframe man but he does
a lot of interesting things here with
the camera and the edit the score is
also very minimal of course it's there
but it doesn't feel like it's all over
the movie there's a lot of scenes of
Silence that can get very uncomfortable
and I could feel it in my theater it
genuinely felt like people were
uncomfortable in the best way the
easiest way that I can describe how I
felt about long legs and why I want to
instantly see it again and might even do
it later is there were certain VHS that
I would see at Blockbuster or Hollywood
Video when I was a kid and I knew I
could never see those I couldn't even I
didn't even want to touch it like it
felt wrong to touch that VHS cuz maybe
whatever demon [ __ ] was going on with
that movie would like you know transfer
over to to me this movie would have been
one of those VHS sitting there at
Blockbuster and I would have been scared
to look at it I also want to let you
know that in case you've missed it for
