0:02 hi my name is Rebecca Dolan I'm the
0:03 Shakespeare school's coordinator at the
0:05 Gaiety School of Acting as part of our
0:07 2018 production of Macbeth we have
0:09 produced these post-show videos for you
0:11 I hope you find them informative and if
0:13 you do please subscribe to our page and
0:18 comment below act 5 scene 1 Lady Macduff
0:21 and Banquo have been murdered Macbeth is
0:23 out in the field it is nighttime in the
0:26 castle at Dunsinane a gentle woman and a
0:28 doctor are discussing Lady Macbeth
0:30 strange habit of sleepwalking at night
0:33 when was it she last walk
0:35 Oh Sue's Majesty went into the field I
0:38 have seen her rise from her bed throw a
0:40 nightgown upon her unlock a closet take
0:43 forth paper fold it right up on it read
0:44 it afterwards seal it I never get in
0:47 return to bed yet all this whilst in a
0:50 most fast asleep a great perturbation in
0:53 nature to receive it once the benefit of
0:57 sleep and do the effect of watching what
0:59 at anytime have you heard her say that's
1:01 so which I'll not report after her you
1:03 may to me and his most meet you should
1:06 know to you not anyone having no witness
1:10 to confirm my speech no you you she comes
1:10 comes
1:12 this is her very guise and upon my life
1:17 fast asleep observe her stand close it
1:23 here's a spot out damned spot out I say
1:29 one too why then tis time to do it hell
1:36 is murky fie my lord fie a soldier and
1:39 afeard what need we fear who knows it
1:41 when none can call our power to account
1:44 it who would have thought the old man to
1:48 have had so much blood in him the Thane
1:51 of Fife had a wife where is she now [Music]
1:54 [Music]
2:00 be clean no more of that my lord no more
2:08 Shakespeare's use of the imperative verb
2:11 ate here would seem to suggest that Lady
2:13 Macbeth still has all her forcefulness
2:15 and power in her nature however she is
2:18 sleepwalking which does suggest a sense
2:20 of loss of power the blood that she is
2:22 trying to wash out of her hands could
2:25 have two meanings it could be the blood
2:26 that she thinks is still there from when
2:28 she dropped the daggers back there could
2:31 be more figurative blood the guilts that
2:33 she feels for her role in the plot to
2:34 commit murder the strong will that
2:37 enabled her to defy her womanhood which
2:39 was evident in earlier in the play has
2:41 broken down entirely
2:43 Lady Macbeth wanders the hall at night
2:45 betraying all her secrets [Music]
2:51 [Music]
2:54 here's the smell of the blood still oh
2:58 the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten
3:04 this little hand lady macbeth realizes
3:07 her role in the dam full of dunkin when
3:09 she says all the perfumes in arabia
3:11 could not sweeten what she means is that
3:13 no matter what she does she cannot
3:14 change the actions of the past
3:17 she seems doomed to relive the night of
3:20 Duncan's murder forever in her sleep go
3:22 wash your hands put on your nightgown
3:26 look not so pale I tell you yet again
3:29 Banquo's buried he cannot come out on
3:35 his grave Tibet Tibet there's a knocking
3:38 at the gate come come come come give me
3:42 your hand what's done cannot be undone
