hi my name is Rebecca Dolan I'm the
Shakespeare school's coordinator at the
Gaiety School of Acting as part of our
2018 production of Macbeth we have
produced these post-show videos for you
I hope you find them informative and if
you do please subscribe to our page and
comment below act 5 scene 1 Lady Macduff
and Banquo have been murdered Macbeth is
out in the field it is nighttime in the
castle at Dunsinane a gentle woman and a
doctor are discussing Lady Macbeth
strange habit of sleepwalking at night
when was it she last walk
Oh Sue's Majesty went into the field I
have seen her rise from her bed throw a
nightgown upon her unlock a closet take
forth paper fold it right up on it read
it afterwards seal it I never get in
return to bed yet all this whilst in a
most fast asleep a great perturbation in
nature to receive it once the benefit of
sleep and do the effect of watching what
at anytime have you heard her say that's
so which I'll not report after her you
may to me and his most meet you should
know to you not anyone having no witness
to confirm my speech no you you she comes
comes
this is her very guise and upon my life
fast asleep observe her stand close it
here's a spot out damned spot out I say
one too why then tis time to do it hell
is murky fie my lord fie a soldier and
afeard what need we fear who knows it
when none can call our power to account
it who would have thought the old man to
have had so much blood in him the Thane
of Fife had a wife where is she now [Music]
[Music]
be clean no more of that my lord no more
Shakespeare's use of the imperative verb
ate here would seem to suggest that Lady
Macbeth still has all her forcefulness
and power in her nature however she is
sleepwalking which does suggest a sense
of loss of power the blood that she is
trying to wash out of her hands could
have two meanings it could be the blood
that she thinks is still there from when
she dropped the daggers back there could
be more figurative blood the guilts that
she feels for her role in the plot to
commit murder the strong will that
enabled her to defy her womanhood which
was evident in earlier in the play has
broken down entirely
Lady Macbeth wanders the hall at night
betraying all her secrets [Music]
[Music]
here's the smell of the blood still oh
the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten
this little hand lady macbeth realizes
her role in the dam full of dunkin when
she says all the perfumes in arabia
could not sweeten what she means is that
no matter what she does she cannot
change the actions of the past
she seems doomed to relive the night of
Duncan's murder forever in her sleep go
wash your hands put on your nightgown
look not so pale I tell you yet again
Banquo's buried he cannot come out on
his grave Tibet Tibet there's a knocking
at the gate come come come come give me
your hand what's done cannot be undone
