So, I got scammed last night and I want
to tell you how it happened so you can
avoid it because everybody I've told,
even the people at the bank are in awe.
And so, I want to tell you what happened
so you can avoid it cuz there were two
mistakes that I made. So, last night
around 5:30, my bank calls and they say,
"Hello, Miss Malay. We have noticed some
fraudulent looking charges on your
account and we're calling to talk to you
about them. Have you recently tried to
make a $300 purchase at Walmart? No. Uh,
did you try to do a $600 purchase at
Target? Nope. And then he said,
"Perfect. We're going to go ahead and
shut down your card right now." And I
said, "Great. Thank you for looking out
for
me." Right. I mean, hello. And then he
said, "So, I'm going to text you a pen."
And I said, "Okay." And he did. And he
said, "Read me the number that comes
back." So, I gave him the number that
came back. And then he said, "We're
going to expedite you this new card, but
because it's Thursday, you're not going
to get it until Monday, but we'll need
to set up the PIN. So, what was your old
PIN?" And I told him that was mistake.
Uh, that was where I made a mistake. Uh,
so I told him I pinned. However,
everything seemed legit. The phone
number came from my bank. Okay. It was
my bank's phone number. the
um the fact that he sent me like a pin,
like he text me a pin and I had to get
him the number. That all seemed legit.
Everything he said just seemed
so incredibly
legit. Oh my gosh. I think he might have
even said, "So, just confirm just
confirm your old pen with me." And so I
said I gave him my old pen and he said,
"Okay, and now what's your new pen?" And
so I told him a new
pin anyway. And then like he was just
going through some things and I said to
him, "Now my bank recently changed
names." Okay. Like recently within like
the last week or two. So this all just
kind of seemed legit. So I said to them,
or what did I say? I said, "So you guys
are changing names right now." And he
said, "Yeah, we're just in the middle of
the merger." And I'm like, "Oh,
perfect." And then when he said goodbye
and he said thank you for banking with
he said the name of the new the new name
of the bank when he first called me. It
was the name of the old bank and then
when he said like I we had spoke we had
spoken about the name change he said
goodbye from the from the new bank. You
guys this was all so legit. Okay. So,
then I'm feeling great and then I look
at my account and I see that there were
some other charges, too. There's like a
$150 charge from a from a grocery store
in Henderson, Nevada. Um, a Sprouts in
Henderson, Nevada. There were about four
like a Circle K in Henderson, Nevada.
There were about seven charges totaling
about $400 from inside from Henderson,
Nevada. I live in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Uh, so this morning I call up my bank,
but I called the number like I just went
into recent calls and I just dialed it
straight back and it went to my bank and
I talked to a guy and I said, "You guys
called me last night. There was some
fraud, but I've noticed some other
charges and I just want to make sure you
guys are aware of them." And then they
transfer me to the fraud department. And
I told her this whole story about
exactly what happened. And guess what?
As soon as I as soon as I was telling
her a story, she said, "Did they ask you
for your pen?" And I said, "Yes." And I
said, "Oh my god, I got scammed. How did
I get scammed?" Like, "Oh my god." Like,
seriously. And I said to her, I said,
"I'm only 45. How did I get scammed?
It's not like I'm 85." Like, I should
have known better. And so, here's the
two things. when I went into the bank
today to go get a new debit card cuz now
you had to go back into the bank
physically. So, thanks for that person
in Nevada make me make an extra errand.
Not that my life is already
busy. Anyway, when I went into the bank
and I told them the story, they were all
flabbergasted, too. They said, "This is
crazy. They are getting so good." So,
here's where I made the mistake. Never
ever ever give out your PIN. If the bank
is calling you, they will have all your
information. Um,
also, if an institution is calling you,
they shouldn't have to send you a a
text, like a pin with a number. Um, and
she thinks that maybe they did that just
to seem more legit because quite
frankly, they did. That seemed legit.
Anyway,
so God bless my bank. They're taking
care of all of it. But um there you go.
Be forewarned. Don't get scammed like
me. Damn it.
