the United States and NATO began a
phased withdrawal from Afghanistan in
2011 with the name of removing all
combat troops by 2014 a goal that was
not met during the Obama presidency
president Trump announced that all
American troops were coming home from
Afghanistan but never carried through
with a plan to do so instead having
troop levels and signing a peace deal
with the Taliban for American troops to
leave by February of 2020 under his
successor after Trump's deal was signed
Afghan troops made a agreements with the
Taliban to lay down their arms and allow
the Taliban to take over President Biden
announced on April 6 2021 that American
troops would honor Trump's peace deal
with the Taliban and pledge to leave
Afghanistan by September 11th 2021 so a
significant anniversary there the
20-year war in Afghanistan had cost
2,488 American fatalities and more than
20,000 injuries and the world watched as
Kabul fell to the Taliban on August 5th
15th which the Press compared to the
fall of Saigon in South Vietnam in 1975
which of course we covered under Ford's
presidency amidst the chaos the US
airlifted more than 124,000 people
including 6,000 American citizens out of
Afghanistan in the six weeks before it
fell in 2012 Obama won re-election by
defeating Republican Mitt Romney the
former Governor of Massachusetts who had
a tough campaign because he was running
against Obama and ObamaCare even though
bom mcare was the plan he had passed as
a conservative version of a healthcare
plan in Massachusetts as Governor when
Justice Antonin Scalia passed away
before Obama made a selection GOP Senate
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell
announced he would stall any replacement
to the court until after the 2016
election Republicans argue that the
vacancy should not be filled until a new
president was in place but in February
of 1988 during an election year the
Democratic controlled Senate had
confirmed Republican President Reagan's
nomination of Anthony Kennedy to the
court and Obama appointed Garland long
before the 2016 election but Republicans
had grown less reverent of historical
political Norms before the nomination
rep Republican senator hatch said Obama
could easily name Meritt Garland who is
a fine man he probably won't do that
because the appointment is about the
election so I'm pretty sure he'll name
someone the liberal Democratic base
wants but when Obama nominated Garland
Senator hatch supported denying Garland
a hearing Republican leadership went
further than just waiting for the 2016
election Senators Ted Cruz of Texas John
McCain of Arizona and Mitch McConnell of
Kentucky said that if Democrat Hillary
Clinton won the presidency in 2016 and
Republicans retained the Senate that
they would keep the vacancy on the court
open indefinitely only filling it when a
Republican president was in office
Republicans refused to hold hearings on
88 District Court nominees and 17 quar
of appeal nominees holding those
positions open until president Trump's
presidency began and allowing
Republicans to in essence pack the
courts when Trump won the presidency he
nominated conservative Neil Gorsuch who
was confirmed in 65 days Justice Kennedy
retired so Trump nominated conservative
Brett Kavanaugh whose confirmation
hearings bore a striking resemblance to
Clarence Thomas's due to the testimony
of accusations of sexual assault though
he was confirmed as well and then in
October 2020 about 1 month before the
election Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away
and McConnell Advanced Judge Amy Coney
Barrett through a confirmation process
and put her on the court just weeks
before the November election and when
many had already cast their
ballots now a central part of Obama's
foreign policy Legacy was the 2015
Iranian nuclear deal Iran had met with
negotiators from the p5+1 that is the
permanent members of the United Nations
security Council the United States the
UK Russia France and China plus Germany
hence the plus one Iran agreed to give
up its nuclear weapons program in
exchange for these nations removing
severe economic s sanctions they had
placed on Iran Iran had to give up 97%
of its uranium and only have uranium
enriched up to
3.67% which is a fancy way of saying
they couldn't use it in a weapon so
watch the next clip about the Iran
