Guidance counseling like when I was growing up was more like
if you were an over an overachieving student you saw your guidance counselor.
They sent you off to college with a pretty little bow,
and helped you apply and send out all of your stuff.
That’s not it anymore.
But it does seem like now, the majority of our job,
like even if a kid is coming in for attendance or an academic
session it’s like, ‘what’s wrong?’
We can get a sense something’s going on.
And then, like, the flood gates open
and they might fill you in on a trauma they’ve
experienced or someone close to them, or something
that’s going on even domestically between their parents,
or between them and their significant other.
Just like some other type of situation that needs further attention.
From what you’ve told me, what I’ve heard from different
little birdies chirping around, there’s a lot of
this like posting and snapping and doing all
this stuff and he said and she said and then someone
has an issue with somebody and they know you’re
neutral so they try and pull at the strings
so that you maybe will now have an issue.
It’s the oldest story in the book.
It happened when I was growing up it happened when ...
But none of them speak up for themselves.
There’s like...I don’t like holding it in.
No I agree.
Because then I’m like I need to say something or
I’m going to get mad and that makes me want to like...
Explode.
Yeah.
Goals are personal. My goals in life are not necessarily
going to be your goals in life. Right?
We might have some common goals.
Some common goals I would like to think is we graduate high school successfully.
Right? Is that a common goal? Yes.
I try really hard to see all of my students on
my caseload more than once like for individual sessions.
Right now I have about 260 give or take on my caseload.
I would say safely we’ve had individual meetings with at least 250.
I’m just calling to check in regarding his attendance.
I can see that he hasn’t been in at all this week,
and he mentioned to one of his teachers, his biology teacher,
that he is dropping out of school.
She thinks that he was joking because he was laughing,
but I’m very concerned where he’s not in.
He was in Monday, came in late, and he hasn’t been in since.
So I just wanted to check in and touch base and
wanted see if you’d be able to coordinate a meeting.
So I want you to create an academic smart goal.
Every single day we’re seeing kids, whether
it’s sitting for planned sessions or pop-ins or
students just in need.
Students with questions that they’re not comfortable even
talking to other people about.
Having students know that we are here for them
not just for their academic career,
but to support them in their entirety, is huge.
I don’t understand how a school could not have guidance counselors,
seeing the need that we're seeing on a daily
basis with our students. You know we have
students with trauma backgrounds who need academic support,
emotional support, social emotional support. It just, to me it’s vital.

Don’t you think it would be better for you, get home from
school, grab something to eat, sit down
at the table, do your homework. Get it done.
You have so many NCs for attendance.
But you have potential to have really good grades.
Like last quarter you had As and two Bs.
I’m going to hold you to it. We are going to old school it right
on paper right now. Ready?
So we are going to try this plan.
Seeing them kind of map out their possibilities and
try to achieve those goals. That is so
fulfilling to me. Just seeing them realizing their potential,
and trying to help them reach their maximum potential.
