1:28 No,
1:30 I'm playing Italy. Shouldn't Shouldn't
1:31 be playing that song.
1:33 Shouldn't Shouldn't be doing this.
1:34 Hey everyone, Chris here
1:36 and my name is Guom. Welcome to Tommen's
1:38 Guitars and Bases and to our review of
1:41 the Fender American Ultralux Vintage
1:43 Corona California 60s Stracaster and
1:46 Assaulted Models. How are you doing? Wow,
1:47 Wow,
1:48 this is an interesting one. So,
1:50 actually, I asked G to not even look,
1:52 not even touch these guitars until this
1:54 jam. So, the intro jam was his first
1:56 interaction with that guitar or any of
2:00 these ultralux vintage models cuz I
2:04 wanted his first honest fullon hot take
2:07 on what is this thing and how they feel.
2:08 What is the first thing that strikes you?
2:10 you?
2:12 It's it first thing that I thought was, "Huh,
2:14 "Huh,
2:17 this is weird."
2:20 Now, let me tell you why. Um, it's
2:22 it's
2:27 it feels and it plays and it smells and
2:27 it looks
2:28 good. It smells good
2:30 like a custom shop. Yeah,
2:30 Yeah,
2:33 it is a Fender Custom Shop Ser cast,
2:34 but it's not.
2:35 But it's not
2:38 because the neck is it's not right. It's
2:41 matte. This is not a custom shop neck.
2:44 And it's got locking tuners and it's got
2:47 a switcheroo that I noticed way too late
2:48 and did not use. And it's got the big
2:50 knobs, not the regular fender knobs. And
2:53 and you know, the block saddles and the
2:55 two modern features. Yeah.
2:59 And the rounded it's it the recessed
3:00 heel. So sorry. Um Yeah.
3:01 Yeah.
3:04 So it's just the the the
3:06 By the way, look at this.
3:10 Yeah, it's it's pretty wild. I um it's I
3:12 I stand by what I said. It's weird in a
3:15 in a great playing way. I think it
3:16 sounded really good, too. I
3:18 I want to get deeper into the weeds on
3:20 that one, but uh
3:21 what is it?
3:24 So, it's really interesting. It's to me
3:28 it's an absolute that love child of
3:30 Fender USA standard production and
3:33 Fender USA custom shop. It's not a
3:35 custom shop at all. It's made in the
3:39 normal US factory in in Corona, but it
3:43 has the vibe and a lot of features that
3:46 you'll only see on custom shops. It's
3:48 It's much more modern than your regular
3:50 sort of reissue custom shop model. What
3:52 are we talking about? This tread or
3:55 telly or anything, but but there are
3:58 like it feels like it's an old guitar
4:01 that you then over the years modded
4:04 and you know slim down the neck to this
4:06 what this thin neck really thin neck
4:08 which is called a modern D. Um swap the
4:11 frets the original frets to stainless
4:12 steel which these are.
4:14 I I thought so. Yeah, they sound
4:17 the original knot, you know, got lost or
4:18 broke and then you replaced that with
4:21 Tusk. Then the original bridge wasn't
4:23 too stable or whatever and you went for
4:27 a two uh point trim instead or you
4:29 didn't like the the sidewalls of the
4:30 ashtray and went went for something
4:32 that's a bit more adjustable with the
4:36 independent um saddles and like no side
4:37 road access.
4:39 Exactly. Like like or the the pickups
4:41 which are not noiseless. So these could
4:42 be your original pickups. These are the
4:45 pure vintage pickups, but you installed
4:47 the S1 switch, which does different
4:49 things on the Strat and the Telly, but
4:52 much simpler than on like the the Ultra,
4:54 like the the more modern series of
4:54 Fenders. So,
4:56 so you truly have no respect for vintage
4:58 instruments. Like, come on.
5:01 Feels like it used to be an old vintage
5:04 guitar that you modded to to make more,
5:06 you know, compound radius 10 to 14 inch,
5:09 etc. Like much more playable, much more
5:13 modern. 100% first time is having a
5:16 light aged uh like weather checked. It
5:19 is weather checked in a non-custom shop
5:22 US uh production. This is not aged. It's
5:24 just that it's full of cracks and the
5:27 metal parts are not super super shiny.
5:29 They're not like rusty at all, but they
5:32 look like they're not brand new.
5:36 So, it is like a really cool
5:38 in between really. I've never seen
5:40 anything like this before. And it's it's
5:43 not going to be the the more affordable
5:46 US model at all. So, you know, that
5:47 needs to be said.
5:50 Then again, it's like it's like
5:51 buying a custom shop pretty much.
5:53 That's it. Like, how much is a custom
5:55 shop nowadays? Like four, five?
5:57 Depends on what you expect, but Yeah.
5:59 Yeah. Yeah. [Music]
6:05 [Music] [Applause]
6:07 [Applause] [Music]
6:57 [Music] Nice.
6:58 Nice.
7:00 It had to be messed up. Hey, did you
7:03 notice how I stayed clean the whole time?
7:04 time?
7:07 I am I am shocked. I I I don't think I breathe.
7:26 How does it feel? Does the neck and the
7:28 the frets make it feel more modern or is
7:30 it like still just a
7:32 Definitely it's but then again feel more
7:34 modern is a bit of a
7:37 you know my it's the neck is fairly thin
7:39 but it's not that far off from most 60s
7:41 Strat I've ever played you know.
7:42 True though. Yeah, that's very true.
7:44 Actually, a lot of vintage guitars have
7:46 thinner necks than we think or than I
7:50 thought for sure. 60 Strat most notably
7:52 have generally very thin neck. So that
7:55 this is not super far off from a vintage
7:58 size neck, but the frets feel different.
8:01 The the it's I don't know. There's
8:04 there's there's there's a resolutely
8:06 more modern sort of vibe to it all, but
8:08 I think it's more the visual impression
8:10 of it. The the way you visualize the
8:13 fret ends very rounded. It just feels
8:16 right. It feels nice. I uh I like it.
8:18 That's my hot take.
8:19 I know controversial.
8:20 He likes it.
8:20 I likes the strat.
8:21 So controversial.
8:24 What? Who? Who would have thought? Crazy.
8:24 Crazy.
8:27 That's so crazy.
8:29 Do Do you think Chris is going to like
8:31 the telly?
8:35 Leave a comment below. Let's see. [Music]
8:59 Heat. Heat. [Music]
9:06 [Music] Heat. Heat.
9:09 Heat. Heat. [Music]
9:42 [Music] [Applause]
9:48 [Music]
10:14 Heat. Heat. [Music]
10:34 [Music]
10:37 chance jazz. Dude, Chris likes the
10:40 tally. Oh my god. Who saw that one
10:44 coming? Total shocker. Yeah, that's the
10:47 thing. It's like I I don't even It's I
10:50 feel like uh like like in a weird state
10:52 of mind where you're like you cannot
10:53 really tell what's real and what's the
10:56 dream. It's like like like
10:58 he just turned this video into a tool song.
11:00 song.
11:02 Come on man.
11:04 I'm totally fine with that. In some
11:06 moments it's like, "Oh yeah, it's a it's
11:08 like one of the ultraas or the modern,
11:10 you know, normal USA telly's." And then
11:12 in some moments like, "Ah, this is like
11:14 my telly, just a ' 60s version of it,
11:15 like with the rose with boards and
11:16 everything." It's like,
11:18 it's a custom shop. It's
11:20 it's such a weird in in the best
11:23 possible way. Like a weird experience.
11:25 You turns out he was right at the
11:28 beginning of this video. We should swap
11:31 guitars with two two other models. [Music]
11:39 Heat [Music]
11:51 [Music] up here.
11:53 up here. [Applause]
11:55 [Applause] [Music]
11:56 [Music] Heat.
11:57 Heat. [Music]
12:00 [Music] [Applause]
12:50 Mama. Mama,
12:55 that one's got chest hair. Hey, what?
12:57 I don't know. I don't know how to phrase
12:58 it, but is it okay to say
13:00 for a second? I was looking for the Oh
13:01 my god. Where?
13:04 No, that one's got a bit of a
13:06 You know, it drives a cool car. This one.
13:07 one.
13:08 That's nice, man.
13:09 This is the Magnum of guitars. Imagine.
13:11 Imagine.
13:13 It's pretty great. Uh, honestly, no.
13:17 It's It's uh uh It feels very It feels
13:20 like the other one, but yeah, just just
13:22 a little bit more oomph. So, what does
13:23 the S1 switch does on that one?
13:26 Uh probably what does
13:26 What does it does?
13:29 What does it does?
13:32 What What did it What did it Did
13:33 when I when I did
13:34 what it would
13:38 it would it would Yes. What What does
13:41 the S1 switch do on my guitar?
13:43 Ah, so now we're talking English. Yes.
13:44 Yeah. It splits the humbucker, I guess.
13:46 I mean, that's what I would want on that guitar.
13:47 guitar.
13:52 It'll be clearer if I volume up. [Music]
13:55 [Music]
13:56 Indeed, it do.
14:01 Indeed. It Okay. 50s 50s ultra looks
15:09 With this guitar, because it's a 50s,
15:12 the neck feels a little strange.
15:13 Oh, yeah.
15:15 Which is a personal preference because
15:17 if you like thinner, modern, more out of
15:20 the way necks, this is your chance to
15:23 get something that looks and plays and
15:26 sounds so vintage otherwise, but without
15:30 the chunky, you know, U50s unck neck.
15:32 So, um, it's just a a really nice and
15:35 thin modern D, which to me is a little
15:37 strange on the 60s. It's like, yes, please.
15:37 please.
15:40 Yeah, it feels it feels more natural,
15:42 but yeah. No, I understand. It's uh it
15:45 is nice to my my my big takeaway is the
15:47 pickups because, you know, noiseless
15:49 have made a lot of progress, but they're
15:50 still noiseless.
15:51 They just sound different. Yeah. Yeah.
15:52 Yeah.
15:54 love the sound of pure vint pure vintage
15:57 and um the the fact that you can have that
15:58 that
16:00 sound with that playability and the
16:02 comfort cuts and all of that because the
16:04 the telly is notably just like a coffee
16:06 table but this one is a refined coffee table.
16:08 table.
16:09 This is very far from coffee table. This
16:11 is like a a high-tech coffee table.
16:14 It's really nice and just yeah finding
16:16 those appointments with that kind of
16:19 pickup selection and and sound pallet is
16:21 uh is beautiful. Also really nice touch
16:23 with the the steel settles on the 60s
16:26 and the the brass block.
16:29 It's it's nice. It's very nice.
16:30 Really cool stuff. Let us know in the
16:32 comments below what you think about the
16:34 uh the new series. Um yeah,
16:36 finally have stainless steel threads. So
16:38 what are you complaining about now? Huh?
16:40 You're going to find something else to
16:42 complain about. You finally got those
16:44 frets. Gosh darn it.
16:46 Gosh darn it. Yeah, that's the thing.
16:48 Yeah, I mean they do feel wonderful.
16:49 Super smooth. So, you know, there
16:51 there's that and really nice stuff. Let
16:52 us know what you think in the comments
16:54 below and see you in another video.
