They're all over social media platforms
like Tik Tok and Instagram and have been
snapped with celebrities like Rihanna
and Julia. They are laboos, furry
plushies that Aussies, many of them
adults, have been lining up to buy. But
the toys and others like it, have also
attracted some criticism. It's Michelle
Wim from BTN High with more. Michelle,
what is this all about? Yeah, that's a
great question. And predominantly this
is about the the broader trend of blind
boxes. And blind boxes are generally uh
products that are they're packaged and
sealed and randomly distributed, but
they're part of a broader collection. So
they're designed to keep people coming
back and and repeat purchasing to build
up a complete collection of whatever toy
or trinket they're into. Um, some people
say that that this model of chance and
luck plays into some gambling behaviors,
particularly since uh these can be quite
some of these blind boxes can be quite
hard to get your hands on and quite
scarce. And a, as you mentioned, um, the
the popularity of blind boxes does span
generations and age groups, but but we
wanted to find out what young people
thought of these, why they think they're
so popular, and and whether they're
aware of the marketing tactics being
used to to keep them hooked on these
things. So, take a look at what they had
to say. I think it's like more the
adrenaline of actually going to get
them, the anticipation. You like get
excited. just like are they going to get
what the one they want or is it just
going to be completely oh it's another
dupe. I was a bit disappointed cuz I
didn't get the ones that I wanted but
like I feel like that's kind of on me
because it's like a little mystery. I
think it's just fun. It's just something
that you do as a little kid. You get
excited when you find something that you
really want and you can unbox it and I
don't know. It's just an adrenaline a
bit of an adrenaline rush. You're like
yay. I mean yeah it's just gambling.
That's really it. I feel like after you
like oh I spent a lot of money I
probably shouldn't have. It's like the
post like
Yes, it is kind of addictive and if you
don't get what you want, you may never
get it. I think just remembering they're
just toys like at the end of the day.
Yeah. And just don't go around buying
like a hundred.
Just toys, Michelle. But some of these
toys go for hundreds of dollars on
resale sites. Is this a trend that's
likely to continue?
Well, when it comes to specific toys,
like Laboos, for example, some people
think it'll stick around for a matter of
months. Others think years, but blind
boxes in general don't look like they're
going anywhere. They've survived in lots
of different forms over decades, and
there's this real joy that comes from
collecting these different toys and a
shared experience online particularly.
Um, so I don't think we'll see the end
