Swami Vivekanand Ji has said that
concentration is the key to success. When you
put your energy in one direction, then
even the impossible becomes possible. Friends,
in the three stories of Swami Ji, we will see
how to divert attention from everywhere and focus on one task. In the
first story, Swami Ji was
resting in a park. There he
saw a boy who was trying to write a difficult shloka on a blank page, but
but
due to mistakes, he was tearing the page again and again
and was starting from a new page every time.
After some time, the attention of the boy went to Swami Ji. The
boy immediately went to him and bowed down and
said, Swami Ji, I have been
trying to write this shloka correctly for the last three hours,
but every time some mistake happens, due to which
I have to start from the beginning.
I do not understand why I am not
able to write. Swami Ji smiled and
said, son, this is happening only due to lack of focus
because an ordinary person spends
most of his energy in useless things and habits,
so the mind constantly wanders.
Working with concentration means putting all your
energy in one place and when
you do this again and again, the mind will not be able to do it. It will be ready
and will not repeat the mistake again The boy
asked Swami Ji, if the mind is wandering again and again,
then how can I concentrate on one task
Swami Ji asked, while writing, you must be
thinking about some person or incident The
boy said, yes Guru Ji, today on holiday
everyone gets time to play outside,
but I have to complete this work, perhaps that is
why I am not able to focus properly
Swami Ji said, okay, now understand these simple methods,
then you will be able to do your work with full concentration
Take deep breaths continuously Swami Ji
said, whenever your mind wanders, take five deep
breaths and remove your focus from both work and play and
bring it on your breath The more
you watch your breath, the more
your mind will start to calm down Feel the work,
when you are writing, feel everything closely
like the pen is touching your hand
and listen carefully to the sound that is being made while writing
When you
pay close attention to all things, then distraction will reduce and
your mind and body will
remain focused on only one task Your attention will become
so focused on work that you will
not even realize the time When the boy told Swami Ji Swami ji
listened to him and
started writing again taking deep breaths. He found that
his mistakes were decreasing and his work was also
completed quickly. He thanked Swami ji.
Swami ji
smiled and said, remember when the mind and
senses are involved in a work, then the
concentration becomes deep and this is the true success.
Second story: One day a young man
reached Swami Vivekanand ji.
Trouble and frustration were clearly visible on the face of the young man. He
told Swami ji that Swami ji, I have been
preparing for the exam for a long time. I have
tried many times but fail every time.
I am not able to understand where I am making a
mistake. Swami ji
listened to him carefully and then asked, do you really
want to pass the exam? The young man said,
yes Swami ji, I am ready to work very hard.
Just tell me
what I have to do. Swami ji took him with him
to an empty place where an old
candle and matchsticks were kept. He
gave a candle to the young man and said,
light this candle and take it to that tree standing at a little distance from here,
but keep in mind that the candle
should not be extinguished. Swami ji said this and
left from there. He lit the candle with a matchstick
and slowly started moving towards the tree with the candle. A
slight breeze blew on the way due to
which the flame of the candle started moving. The young man
tried his best to save it but the
candle got extinguished. The young man came back,
lit the candle again and started walking again. The young man
repeated this process many times but every time a
slight breeze extinguished the flame of the candle.
Finally, the tired young man came
back holding the extinguished candle in his hand and
said disappointedly, Swami ji, I failed in this also.
Swami ji said smilingly to the young man,
why? You just had to light the candle and
walk a little distance. The young man
said softly, Swami ji, I tried but
due to the wind the flame kept getting extinguished again and again. Swami
ji said, this is what you have to understand that
your mind is also like the flame of this candle
and the wind all around is a habit of distracting the attention.
Till you do not control these habits, the
flame of meditation will keep getting extinguished. Similarly,
till you do not concentrate completely on your goal,
you will
not be able to reach your destination. Therefore, concentrate your mind
and get completely immersed in whatever work you do.
Your efforts will definitely be fruitful. You will be successful and
remember that the basic element of all kinds of knowledge is meditation, so to do
anything you will have to
learn to concentrate at one place, the
mind will become like the habit you develop,
so do even the smallest work with concentration, by
doing this the nature of the mind will change,
then you will definitely get success. Third
story: A young man asked Swami ji that
how to let go of the thoughts coming in the mind,
Swami ji told the young man that I will tell you but
before that you have to give an exam, then
Swami ji filled a glass completely with water and gave it to the
young man
and said hold it and stand without spilling even a drop of water, the young
man said this is easy and took the
glass, everything was fine in the beginning
but after a while doubts started arising in his mind,
what difference will it make, after all
how long will I have to hold it like this,
as these thoughts started coming his
attention started getting distracted and water started spilling from the glass,
finally Swami ji said son, as long as
your mind was calm, the water did not fall,
but as soon as thoughts started coming in your mind, the
water started falling out, he
further explained that just like the blow of a hammer on hot iron
gives it a new shape, similarly your
thoughts give a new shape to your personality Give shape to the mind
Your mind is also like water in a glass
which can be easily distracted
If you want to keep the water i.e. mind stable, then
first you have to learn to stabilize all the thoughts
Now do one thing Hold this glass
again and bring your attention to your breath
Feel your breath coming and going in the stomach and chest
Let go of the pain and discomfort in the hand Let the
thoughts that are coming in the mind flow
Remind yourself that you are not the thought but a
person who is watching them from a distance By
remembering this, thoughts will come and go but will
not be able to distract the mind For a while, the
young man continued this practice and
stood without spilling even a single drop from the glass Swami
ji said keep practicing carefully like this
Gradually your mind will start becoming calm
and then doing any difficult work will become
natural for you After this the young
man returned home after thanking Swami ji
